A wanted man after the destruction of the Iron Butterfly Casino, Nox Boyet must flee the island of Manhattan—the only home he's ever known. Together with Cade, Sam, and the rest of their ragtag group, Nox must find a place to hide from the District Police and the violent group of unknown drug dealers on his tail.
The solution—the Creel family farm in South Carolina.
But home isn’t quite sweet for Cade, the prodigal son. As Cade struggles with his own secrets, shadows of the past threaten not only Nox’s life, but his relationship with his son, Sam.
Nox knows there will never be peace unless he finds the answers to all his questions—and the answers lie back on the island. Cade and the others must choose their paths—find safety or follow the Vigilante into the darkness of the city? The city where Nox will come face-to-face with the past.
Tere Michaels unofficially began her writing career at the age of four when she learned that people got paid to write stories. It seemed the most perfect and logical job in the world and after that, her path was never in question. (The romance writer part was written in the stars—she was born on Valentine’s Day.)
It took thirty-six years of “research” and “life experience” and well… life… before her first book was published but there are no regrets (she doesn’t believe in them). Along the way, she had some interesting jobs in television, animation, arts education, PR, and a national magazine—but she never stopped believing she would eventually earn her living writing stories about love.
Her home base is a small town in New Jersey, very near NYC, a city she dearly loves. She shares her life with her husband, her son—who is also her personal trainer—and an exceedingly spoiled cat. Her spare time is spent watching way too much sports programming, going to the movies and for long walks/runs in the park, reading, and doing yoga.

Who Knows the Dark by Tere Michaels Vigilante book 2. Post apocalyptic M - M romance fantasy. Should be read in series order. Cannot be read as a stand-alone. Alternating present and Interludes of past and future. Cliffhanger. Nox, Sam, Cade, Mason and crew try to survive their dangerous situations, homes and events that could bring everything and everyone crashing down.
Dark, brooding, and secrets that cause angst but also answer questions. I read the first book almost five years ago. After starting this, I did backtrack a bit, reading reviews of the first book to refresh my memory of the Iron Butterfly and what happened there. That did help me enough to then read this book. Nox and Cade really need to talk to each other. Life isn’t easy for any of them.
Who Knows the Dark takes up immediately where “Who Knows the Storm” left off – meaning that you cannot exactly read this without reading the first book. Cade, Nox, Sam, Mason, Rachel, and Damian, are heading towards Cade’s family farm in South Carolina, after the destruction of Iron Butterfly Casino. They need to regroup before figuring out what to do next, considering that they are practically persons of interest...
Truthfully, I was rather underwhelmed with this sequel. I felt that things were going nowhere; to quote Nox himself, "We have a lot more questions than answers". These characters spend a lot of time in the book either thinking inside their head, muttering about things, or reminiscing about the past.
And there were a lot of those... Nox struggling with his secret (and whether he should tell Sam), Nox thinking of going back to New York City to find answers and clear his name, Cade feeling upset because Nox is playing martyr, Rachel thinking about her past of being Jenny, while Sam and Mason are navigating the case of first love amidst Sam recuperating.
Okay, it might not be completely true, because at least Nox finally told Sam about the truth of his identity, and we also got a huge clue to whom was responsible for keeping Nox alive all these years – but still, for a sequel, I felt like these characters didn’t really do anything SIGNIFICANT.
In fact, the most valuable player in this book is not part of the initial ragtag team ... he is LJ Creel, Cade’s older brother. He proves to be very resourceful, providing new information, hacking accounts, and just being all around awesome. LJ pretty much lifted this book up for me – him, as well as our young lovers, Sam and Mason.
A big warning … this book ends in a cliffhanger. So if you are one of those readers who hate it, I recommend waiting for the next book to be released.
I loved book 1 of this series and enjoyed finding out what happened to the characters. Compared to Who Knows the Storm, this wasn't as tight or propulsive. There are several revelations but a lot is clearly being saved up for the final volume, which I suppose adds to the overall sense that this is definitely a middle book. There are several added POVs and the changes in locations create a kind of narrative cul de sac as the characters run away from and then back to a ruined New York, leaving the South Carolina sections feeling a little like a dead end--especially for Nox who (understandably) seems to lose much of his identity away from the streets he prowled for so long. Still, I continue to LOVE the post-apocalyptic setting and the characters, Cade most of all, who really comes into his own here, so I will definitely be looking out for book three, where hopefully all will be revealed!
I’m iffy on this being 3 stars. I think it mostly gets there on the strength of the ending. The rest of the book is quite a strange, meandering story that serves as the bridge between the first and third books in this trilogy.
In some ways, an improvement stylistically over Book 1. Michaels doesn’t have quite so many POV changes, which in Book 1 necessitated a huge number of chapters for such a short book. This is a short book as well—now that I’m 2/3s through the overall story, I do wonder whether this would have been better served by condensing and making it either two books or even just one.
In Who Knows the Dark, we pick up immediately after our crew has left NYC/The District by boat, making their way to Caden’s family farm in South Carolina. There’s a feeling of being on the run, being chased, of momentum, which is then immediately halted once they arrive. More than half the book, from that point on, is everyone healing from their various physical and emotional traumas at the farm while they slowly unravel the machinations of the drug cartel from Book 1 (literally using a Charlie Day evidence board).
Very light on intimate scenes, in fact one happens off page, as this book is more interested in family dynamics and planning their return to The District. Michaels writes the entire arc as if no one but Nox, our brooding male main character, is going to return, but we all know better. Sam, Nox’s “son” (but actually brother) gets closer with his cop boyfriend, which gets close to, but does not cross, the line for underage intimacy on page.
Once we get back to The District in the final 1/3, things kick into incredibly high gear, leading to servers major revelations, and another cliffhanger to propel us into the final book. I’m invested, but it’s hard to know whether this is actually just sunk cost.
If you thought book 1 was confusing, and I did, then book 2 will probably not give you all the answers you are looking for! This is a rollercoaster as we join Nox and his ragtag group of vigilantes.
My first thoughts on this series is it’s not romance. You may get a little along the way and when it’s time to wrap the series up I am hoping for a lot more but at this stage Nox is too involved in finding those responsible to be anywhere near romantic. Having said that I do think he has strong feelings for Cade and you certainly see more emotion from him in this book.
The group have escaped the city but it’s no picnic. Being stuck on a boat in one hell of a storm with nobody really trusting each other is a dire predicament to find yourself in. Sam is really unwell and his body is battered from the explosion and for the first time ever Nox is showing signs of being unsure of himself.
Watching Nox struggle between wanting a bit of normality and the need for revenge eating him up is interesting. Staying at Cade’s farm reminds him what a quiet life could be like but his overriding need is to keep everyone safe and until he can ensure that all bets are off. Cade is feeling unsure of himself without the trappings of his previous lifestyle and returning home means he has to face his past.
LJ was a great addition to the story and a total surprise for Cade who is left speechless for once in his life. Sam is falling in love and for the first time we see him making strides for his independence which may or may not be hampered when he learns the family secret.
Tere Michaels drags you into this story and keeps you there through all the twists and turns. It is very cleverly thought out, frustrating as hell when the answer always seems to be just one step away, and the ending had me climbing the walls! More secrets are exposed and who would have thought of that one? Not me, that’s for sure!
IMHO even better than the first book. Plot complexities and new characters brought depth to the story, and a major cliffhanger ending left me slack-jawed and trying to find out when the next installment will be coming. Different from the other Tere Michaels books I have read; darker, futuristic and raw.
I read book 1 last year and probably could have used a reread or at least a thorough summary before diving into this one. However, I believe this book to be character driven enough that I was able to enjoy it as I was filling little things I had forgotten. This is book 2 in the series and should not be read as a standalone.
Nox and Cade can be a little frustrating, but I enjoy the cast of characters that continues to grow as we add in Cade’s family. I enjoyed Cade’s family though I did t expect to.
The setting of this book is a tad bleak and I have been promised more action in the next book. I think more action will make the bleakness a little tolerable.
There are flashbacks throughout that I found disorienting in book 1 but was able to follow quite well in this book.
Wow. I loved this book. I love the world Tere Michaels has created, as fucked up as it is, and I love the messy characters she gives us.
This is a return to the dark world we first visited in Who Knows the Storm, which was set in New York City after a series of catastrophic storm events devastated the city. That book follows Nox Boyet as he attempts to survive with his son Sam, in what is left of the city. There is massive back story here, drug dealers, Nox’s parents, how he finds Sam, a whole bunch of shit happens to them. In to this mess comes Cade Creel, a prostitute working at one of the local casinos that have taken over down town. Cade is asked by one of his patrons to simply deliver a note to an address. Nox and Sam’s house, he comes to find out, and Cade is drawn in.
Who Knows the Dark picks up right after the first book ends, with our band of refugees on a yacht heading south. I don’t want to tell you how they got there, that would be a big spoiler from the first book! If you read it you know who is who and what is what. If you didn’t, you should!
So Nox, Cade, Sam, Mason, Rachel, and Damien have escaped the city and the drama following them, and are heading to what they hope will be a safe haven until they can get themselves sorted out. Sam is injured and sick, the rest are scared, tired, broke, and homeless. They have a bit of adventure getting there, but eventually arrive at the Creel farm in South Carolina. Cade’s mom and brother are happy to have them there, his dad not so much.
They all get a brief break at the farm, then are on the move again, splitting up. A group going to safety, then a group headed back to NYC to clear their names. I’ll stop there before I give anything else away!
This book is one hell of a ride. We think they are safe, then they aren’t, then they are, then they really aren’t! I was all over the place with this one. Nox and Cade are together and happy, together and pissed off, apart and pissed off, it’s just a mess. I loved the growing connection between Sam and Mason, that added a nice bit of sweetness to an otherwise dark story. I also liked seeing a look in to Cade’s family and his life prior to his involvement in this drama.
There really isn’t much romance in this one, very little sex (what brought my rating down to 4.5 instead of 5), and Nox and Cade aren’t happy for most of the book. It’s all about the adventure, the action, the drama, and the mystery. Lots of things are revealed through flashbacks, and a big old thing happens at the end that I suspected might happen, but was still a bit surprised.
This book does require a certain suspension of reality, there were things that made me go “hmmm….”. Sometimes things were a little too convenient for me to accept. Cade’s brother happens to be a computer hacker, just what they needed. They run in to people at the right place and time to get help. Things like that. Totally didn’t ruin the story for me, since this isn’t a realistic story to begin with, but I did pause for a moment now and then. But damn, it is a fun and suspenseful story! I was on the edge of my chair (couch!) with this one, waiting to see where we would go. Then there was a big CLIFFHANGER! What the hell? How long do we have to wait for the next one Tere?
I loved the first book too, I read it last year then just listened to the audio version to get ready for this new one. If you haven’t read it, you really should, then go right in to this one. If you like a dark dystopian world, give them a shot. I can see they won’t be to everyone’s taste, but if this is your thing, they are fantastic books, and I highly recommend them!

You get to see a more Cade and Nox also more of other characters from the first book. You also get to read more about Sam and Mason which was so sweet seeing the two of them together. This time they are running trying to get away from who is after them, after what happened in the first book in this series. So this is when I say I like a slow burn but this one is almost too slow for me.. Now when I say almost it is just to the point were I really feel like I did not get anymore from Cade and Nox then what I got in the first book and I was just hoping for a little more I guess. Otherwise this has a lot of action, angst and mixed in with a little bit of steam. I really love this world the author has created. You get your bad guys also with this book and the ending just I cant say what happened but I so cant wait to read the next book.
All together I really liked this book and thought it was a great add to this series!
I would recommend this book!
I received this book free in exchange for an honest review from Inked Rainbow Reads.
This was an EXCELLENT extension of this series. The continued plot was just as good as the first book. The amount of suspense and thrill was just great. Exactly like the first book, I couldn't put this one down.
There are so many twists and turns in this book, it was so exciting to read. I really loved the chemistry between the characters and not just Nox and Cade, but between Sam as well as he gets to experience life outside of living with his over protective father.
I can't wait for the next part of this series since we are left with a cliffy.
Overall a really really great dystopian series
I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Inked Rainbow Reads.
Omg your killing me....Nox's breaks my heart. I want him to finally find peace, revenge, and freedom. Loved LJ, the chemistry between him and Rachel was amazing. Nox and Cade, hoping for the best. this was exciting, heartbreaking, twist and turns amazing story!!!! I can not wait for more fantastic
This book is very slow moving. There are some classic Cade moments that are always entertaining and the sexy, growling, alpha Nox. FULL REVIEW: http://thetbrpile.weebly.com/reviews/...
Finally finished this after repeatedly delaying it. I think it was slow and drawn out. It wasn't bad. There just wasn't enough happening. I'll need more in book 3. 2.5 stars
After enjoying the first book, I picked this up at the Coastal Magic Convention in February, eager to dive back into Nox and Cade’s story. The author does a great job of resolving some lingering issues for the characters from the first installment, though I found myself wanting a bit more.
In this book, we get a deeper look into Cade and his background, which really helps explain his personality and inner strength. His brother, LJ, is introduced and plays a crucial role in the story. While this book isn’t as dark as the first, it still maintains a solid dystopian feel.
I’ve already loaded the final book of this trilogy because I’m now fully invested in these characters and their journey. To me, that says it all!
In my review for book 1 I mentioned I power listened to these books and OMG, this book took me on a ride. Book 1 ending with Nox, Sam, Kade, Mason, Rachel and Damien heading to Kade's family home on a boat. The action in this story just starts rolling and picks up speed and heads straight towards a cliffhanger I did not see coming. There is still plenty of anger, survival, miscommunication and Nox just being a stubborn sob. I'm just saying. I don't want to give away the story but I'm going to say again, cliffhanger to the max.
Nox and the crew have escaped the island and are on their way to Cade’s family farm in South Carolina. It is treacherous and they aren’t sure who they can trust. There are strange near misses and they are wondering why they just haven’t flat out killed Nox. Nox is starting to feel that they are being guided and manipulated but has no clue by whom. There are several surprising twists and turns. They are finding that people just aren’t who they thought they were. I’m on the edge of my seat!
Picking up right where the first one left off, this book is gives everyone space to reset. Motives are questioned, secrets are revealed, and plans are made. I enjoyed the new additions. I know the author is leading us into a big battle soon, (in book 3), so I appreciated this book for its patience. A little calm before the storm.
Nicely paced with well developed secondary characters. The relationship between main characters Nox and Cade progresses nicely. I was a little disappointed about where the story ended. Hopefully there will be a book three to rectify that.
Though this was a SUPERB book I was SO disappointed to realize the book ends with a cliffhanger and there in NO third book in sight. I mean Tere has said the book is practically ready but for some reason it hasn't been published yet. So while I DEFINITELY recommend this book (and the previous one"Who Knows the Storm"), keep in mind there are still a lot of unanswered questions and though Cade and Nox got closer together they still have a way to go before they can even call themselves a couple.
The previous book ended with Nox Boyet and his "son" Sam, together with Cade Creel, Mason Todd, Rachel Moon and Damian running away from New York City to Cade's family farm in South Carolina. It might felt awkward at first but with Cade's mother cooking a storm (and helping Sam get back in shape), his father patrolling with his shotgun (even if he plays the unhappy disappointed parent) and his brother who somehow turned into a hacker they manage to regroup and try to piece everything together. I wouldn't say Nox warmed up to Rachel (Jenny) but he came to realize she has a lot of knowledge that can help them solve the mystery of what's REALLY going on.
It's obvious to everyone they were "lucky" to make it alive with the police and the feds looking for them but WERE they lucky or was someone helping them and who could it be? They spend most of this installment trying to figure things out and while there are more revelations we are still left hanging at a few key points especially after they decide to leave Cade's home behind and go back to the city to clear their names.
Relationship wise there's progress for sure. Getting more of Sam's POV we see him and Mason come even closer together. It was cute and endearing really. Mason was exactly what Sam needed. His gently care and understanding was everything especially when Sam learns a little bit more about what they are dealing with as well as about his past. It was a devastating point for Nox and Sam to have this conversation and though I don't think he got everything out of Nox he got enough and it was truly heart breaking. Nox loves Sam SO MUCH but he made a few bad decisions concerning what he was willing and mostly unwilling to say to Sam, forgetting for a moment there Sam is an adult... But I could totally get it. Nox have been on his own his whole life, even when his parents were alive. He had no one to trust and no one to share his burdens which also shows in his relationship with Cade. He might want more but he doesn't know how to ask or how to accept what Cade is lovingly offering. In a way it's easier to accept the truce between him and Rachel.. As they both have everything to lose/win in this situation. But love? He doesn't know how to handle that. Cade from his part is frustrated with Nox and yet he isn't willing to give up on him, on them. Even when Nox gets on his nerves. There's also a promise of another relationship between Rachel and Cade's brother LJ. Can't wait to see how this one unfolds!
For me this book was mostly about relationships as there is not a lot "happening" in the farm. Near the end when they are on their way to the city they encounter someone they know and were actually worried about - Alec. Things got complicated at that point for a number of reasons. We, or rather, Nox got quite the blow when he learned a bit more about the behind the scenes of the drug "Dead Bolt" and it's distribution on the island. But sadly for us, that's right around where this book ends with us left hanging..... I REALLY hope Tere will gets around to finishing the last book and publishing it. I CAN'T WAIT to get the ending of this story!
Yep, it's HIGHLY recommended though I'm bummed about the ending...
Nox, Sam, and Cade and their travel companions aren’t yet safe. Sam is getting sicker by the minute and being doted on by his almost boyfriend. Nox isn’t happy and it’s all making Cade unhappy. So, an unhappy Cade shows up at his family farm with his ragtag band of fugitives and has to deal with the family he left. It’s all… uncomfortable. Nox settles in to try to solve the puzzle of who is behind the drugs in the District. There are layers upon layers of people and phony organizations to sort through. Once law enforcement shows up they all know it’s time to leave the Creel farm, but there is some serious emotional upheaval before they all leave. Nox makes his way back to the District, that’s where things start to go wrong.
I have to confess I was really confused about what was happening in the beginning. It would be good to go over the previous book before reading this. This book still has plenty of immediate danger, but there is more time for the characters to think and reflect on the course of their life and their current troubles. Cade in particular spends a lot of time dwelling on his life choices and wondering if he’s ever made a good one. Consequently, this book felt pretty angsty. There is a whole lot of family drama. Some of it I really didn’t see coming. Nox and Sam need to walk similar paths, and neither man is happy with that. At all.
Some mysteries are demystified. Alex is found. Now no one likes him. One mystery was resolved by something way out of left field. I haven’t really processed how I feel about it. Could be an awesome writerly device, or not. I’m reserving judgment and being deliberately vague. Other things still appear nebulous even though I may know all the major players I don’t necessarily see how they fit together.
That ending. Damn. It was dark indeed. I really want the next one. Nox and Cade’s relationship is progressing, they’re getting to see the ugliest parts of each other right off. I enjoyed this book, but preferred the more action based first book. Since hairy things are happening that need a resolution I do really want the next one.
This sequel to Who Knows the Storm finds Nox, Cade and Sam on the run heavy a couple stowaways. Damien, the cop, Mason, has grown quite attached to Sam, and Rachel is going to stay in Nox’s line of sight since he trusts her about as far as he can throw her. They book passage on a ship, headed toward the Creel family farm; the one place Cade couldn’t get away from fast enough might turn out to be the only safe haven for this motley crew. Until a danger onboard the ship causes unexpected trouble.
I really loved the first book in this series. I am a fan of anything Dystopian, the post-apocalyptic type of world, danger lurking around every corner and generally the elements are harsher than the crazies carrying guns. This book suffered from a little bit of dreaded second book syndrome. The story alternated between slow and scattered to crazy and confusing. Early on when they are on the ship the story is almost stagnate. Nox is doing what he does best, trying to push everyone away, including Cade. This continues on for the most of the book, hey come here I want you, no no, changed my mind, go away. Slightly aggravating, I can only imagine how Cade felt. Then once they arrived at Cade’s family’s farm, there was a lot of information thrown in all at once. Thankfully, in the middle of all the chaos, I was able to piece together some information to shed light on why the club was bombed and who it is that has been keeping a very close eye on Nox and Sam.
I must warn you, the story ends on a cliffhanger from hell. And while this book didn’t set well with me for multiple reasons, I will still read the next book. Why? Because I am intrigued and curious. Overall, this book annoyed me, but there was enough in the content to give me morsels of the past and how it could affect the future. A positive nod to the Author for keeping me intrigued.
This review is for the audiobook, narrated by Jonathan Young.
Who Knows the Dark is an intriguing post-apocalyptic adventure. The narration is done perfectly. As with the first book, Jonathan Young really brings this story to life with his performance. I highly recommend this series to anyone looking for a strong action/suspense story with some romance.
This book is a bit slower paced than the first. The focus is on mystery and suspense as the characters work to puzzle their way through the complications of their forced exile. The pacing fits the story perfectly. It's highly engaging and really hard to put down.
My only complaint is I feel like the ending is a bit abrupt. In the first book the ending was perfect for me. There was a definite feeling of some kind of conclusion, even knowing there was more to come. I didn't get that feeling with this ending, and that was mildly disappointing.
This series has a romantic sub-plot, and there are a few explicit sex scenes. But I wouldn't recommend this to someone looking for a highly romantic or erotic story.
Overall, I loved this book! I'm emotionally connected to the characters, and the story has totally sucked me in. I can't wait for the next one!
*I received a free copy of this book to read for Inked Rainbow Reads in exchange for an honest review.*
4.25 Stars ~ The very first thing I did before reading ‘Who Knows the Dark’ was to go back and reread ‘Who Knows the Storm’, the first book in the series. It has been several years since I read that book and I needed to make absolutely sure I was remembering everything that happened correctly. There is a lot of detail and background information revolving around Nox, Jenny/Rachel, Sam, and Cade. Not to mention Nox’s parents, Carson and Natalie, plus Mr. White, Zed, Damian, and… oh yeah, Alec. This is not a series that can be read out of order, at least, not in my opinion.
When the first installment ended, Nox, Cade, Rachel, Sam, Mason, and Damian have escaped New York and chartered a boat to take them to South Carolina where Cade’s family farm is. The Iron Butterfly was bombed, killing a ton of people, and now there are warrants out for their arrests. Nox discovered that Mr. White, the man who sent Sam the letters about helping him find his parents, raped Natalie at the sanitarium and is Sam’s biological father. In his rage, Nox killed Mr. White and I said “good riddance” ‘cause that man was nasty. Unfortunately, Nox is leaving with more questions than answers.
Wow! Lots of twists and turns. This does end in a cliffhanger. I really did enjoy this. I was prepared for the lack of romance and got more than expected. The characters interpersonal relationships were brought out more in this book compared to the first. I felt like I learned a bit more about the characters through this story.
The author has done a very good job of bringing more and more of the characters to light. She has done an excellent job of weaving together the different aspects of the story into a strong story line. The flashbacks used were done in an excellent way to bring pieces together.
I am really looking forward to the next book and what will happen.
This was a suspenseful, brooding follow up to Who Knows the Storm. Tere Michaels is underrated, in my opinion, and I really enjoy her voice. Her characters are well crafted and memorable, and I look forward to more of this series.
