Odd Thomas Graphic Novel #3

House of Odd (Graphic Novel)

Rate this book
Could there really be such a thing as hell on earth? Odd only knows.

Transforming a ramshackle mansion into a dream house has become a nightmare for onetime Hollywood producer Nedra Nolan, whose newly purchased fixer-upper in Pico Mundo has sent a string of spooked contractors scurrying off the job, claiming the place is haunted. Who’s she gonna call? Her friend recommends Odd Thomas, the mild-mannered young man with a gift for communing with ghosts who won’t rest in peace. With his soul mate and sidekick, Stormy Llewellyn, in tow, Odd agrees to investigate the eerie incidents. But his spirit-seeking style is cramped by the obnoxious TV ghost hunters Nedra hires to flush out the troublesome phantoms with elaborate gadgets . . . and a psychic cat.

As night falls and a raging storm traps them all in the mazelike manse, Odd tries in vain to scare up some lost souls. But instead, something more terrifying than any apparition—something with flesh, blood, and teeth—makes its sinister presence known. And with nowhere to hide, Odd and his fellow hunters suddenly become the prey.

A lukewarm entry in the Odd series. More silly than scary - which is sometimes the case with Odd Thomas. Obviously a graphic novel cannot be quite as developed as a full novel, but this one felt pretty one dimensional. Not really any character or story development at all. To me, it seemed like the final climax was developed and then a hasty back story was added to get it there.

The artwork is okay - Manga style like the last two Odd graphic novels - but I was not blown away by it. Usually I include a few images in my review of graphic novels, but I have not been able to find any really good ones online for this volume.

If this was a stand alone, I might give it 3 stars. But, given that I have other graphic novels and regular novels to compare it to, this one is the weakest opposing so far, so I have to go with 2 stars.

What I do really like is Stormy!

I enjoyed “House of Odd” much more then the previous two graphic novels “In Odd We Trust” & “Odd Is On Our Side.” One of the main reasons I loved “House of Odd” so much more is the artist Queenie Chan has perfected her artistic representation of Odd Thomas. His facial expressions are much more enjoyable, he doesn’t look as wooden and plastic as he did in the first graphic novel. I feel like if there had been a fourth and fifth graphic novel she would of really of knocked it out of the park.

I also enjoyed the kind of story told in “House of Odd” much more the the other graphic novels. So much of the regular novels focus on murder mysteries and ordinary kidnappings. And while those stories have a paranormal twist, “House of Odd” is the first true supernatural adventure that does not have a Scooby Doo mundane explanation at the end. If anything this graphic novel gives me hope that we will get more demonic entities and horrifying creatures in the later novels of the series.

Whatever happened to Cassandra upstairs, she wasn't talking. Which made her much easier to listen to.

The plot is a bit weak, but the book is fun and filled with humor. I always like books with pictures - makes me feel so accomplished when I'm able to read them so quickly and of course I'm a big fan of Odd, Stormy and Dean Koontz. This book will at least make you smile. I recommend picking up a copy from the library for a quick odd adventure. In the back is an excerpt from ODD HOURS, book 4 in the Odd Thomas series.

This book... Oh the sassy and poor puns are so endless. You can't even read a serious part without the art being a tiny bit comical. I really liked that since the last few book I've had to read were either really graphic or so dry that I think I could have sanded my dancer feet with them. The characters in this story were very well described and matched their art almost to a perfect T. "'Does it have a quick-snack room?' 'No, but it has a smart-ass room'"(31). This is a conversation between the haunted home owner and Stormy, the lead's girlfriend, while the owner is giving a tour of the house. It's those sassy little comments that keep me going through this book. Dean's books in general are always fast paced, but never a quick read. This adaptation really holds true to both. I personally liked this book, but maybe it was because I am a little sass master.

I suggest if you are a fan of Dean Koontz like I am that you read this. Also, if you enjoy manga art then you would probably like that aspect of it. If you are just a sassy person go read it because it's just great. I can't really think of any Graphic that are similar to this one, but you could check out the Dean version of this because it was pretty cool, and also Velocity because that book is just mind bending and the bipolar opposite of this.

Mostly just for fans of the original series, and honestly doesn’t have most of what makes the books so great because it simply lacks the space to capture all the narrative humor and plot creativity. This is definitely bonus content…but also Stormy’s in it, and that made me so happy I had to give it three stars.

This was like reading Archie’s Weird Mysteries. Fun, ghoulish, and easy to read with some out of this world, silly characters. I’d read more in this series or check out the novels that tie into it.

It's good to get together with Odd Thomas again, but I was surprised (and disappointed) by the plot of this graphic novel. Odd's tongue-in-cheek humor and love for Stormy and the art of short order cooking are readily apparent, but his defining ability--communicating with the dead--does not play a role in the story. I was also surprised by the number of characters introduced in this very short tale; one of the best things about the Odd Thomas books has always been the small number of characters and the amazing depth of their development.

Just noticed that this book will be a graphic novel- how disappointing. I out grew picture books a long time ago. I want to make up my own pictures to go with the story- a long compIicated story.

Confused me as to when it takes place, as it is after Brother Odd but then what's up with Stormy?

The final book in the three-part graphic novel series gets spooky. A group of paranormal investigators from a hit reality TV show are sent in to help Odd and Stormy find out if an old house is truly haunted. A cat with supposed psychic powers is also brought along because, why not right? A sudden storm forces everyone to stay in the house overnight and Odd begins to get his legendary bad vibes. Scares, twists, and humor abound in this graphic series wrap-up.

I really enjoyed the idea of bringing in a group of “investigators”. This semi-recent cultural phenomenon has always seemed unbelievable and laughable at best, fleecing and grifter-ish at worst. The group in this book embody many of the personalities their real-life cable tv counterparts. The scientist that does not believe in ghosts, the true-believer psychic, and the hapless cameraman that behaves like Shaggy from Scooby-Doo. They all perform their parts well and are used well to propel the narrative forward, but they are altogether forgettable as individuals. That is not a bad thing though. They are memorable as a ghost hunting team that is in over their heads, and that is all they need to be. This was a great book, but I wish they would have continued making these graphic novel adaptations. I give it 10/10 Ghost Busters.

This graphic novel came out in 2012 and was written by Dean Koontz and Landry Walker and Queenie Chan. Queenie Chan illustrated this book as well as the other two in the series.. It is the second of three graphic novels written in the Odd Thomas series.

It is a fun story that takes place before Odd Thomas, the first book in the series. An enjoyable story but not necessary to read before the novels.

The illustrating is done in a manga style and it is fun to see how Queenie envisions, Odd, Stormy and others.

Odd and Stormy are called in when they are restoring an old mansion in Pico Mundo and it is suppose to be haunted. Of course call the Odd one, because of his special gifts. The house could be a dimensional portal, or haunted or just old and creaky.

Joining Odd and Stormy a group of cheesy, web based ghost hunters. Hi Jinx ensue.

This is the third Graphic Novel, but it also is a prequel to the books, For those of us who had read all the books, it is so nice to be back with Odd and Stormy again just for a little while. For those who consider Graphic Novels as just for kids, (1) You might want to be sure you know the content that your kids are reading, some are definitely not for kids. (2) Graphic novels are sort of a shorthand for writers. The pages dedicated in a long book to describing what the reader can see is removed by showing in pictures what the environment is like, the author then just has to move the story forward. I am not saying that it is better, it is just another way of telling a story, if you have not experienced reading a great comic, this series is not a bad way to start. This was a Good Read.

This is the last of the three Odd Thomas manga volumes and has Odd and Stormy stay at a haunted house with a bunch of professional TV ghost hunters.

Anyone familiar with the manga series "Ghost Hunt" is going to love this one as its in a very similar vein - we have a science oriented hunter, a professed psychic and her psychic cat and a general dogsbody, plus of course genuine Odd and gun-toting Stormy. I like the mix of various approaches to the supernatural.

Although never groundbreaking, this one is really fun and definitely the strongest of the three Odd graphics. Really like the demonic faces. Its nothing you've not seen done before, but its solid and its nice to see Odd working in a team.

This is the last of the original graphic novels, and, in my opinion, the best of the three. There are no ghosts in this one. There is just a haunted house. And it is a doozy of a haunted house. There's this old mansion on a hill. It has been mostly empty since the 1960s. The new owner, Nedra Nolan, a retired Hollywood producer, wants to remodel the building, but she can't keep a contractor or workers.
She hired a television ghostbusting crew called the California Institute of Supernatural Investigation or CISI. From the way they act after they show up, I'd call them the Certified Institute of Strange Individuals and I'd never let them near me or mine.
Odd and his girlfriend Stormy get invited to the mansion to seek ghosts also. Odd see dead people, only he isn't seeing any there. His physic intuition keeps taking him to the basement, but it takes him most of the night to figure out why. Oh, yeah, it was a dark and stormy night. Odd solves the case and everything is back to "normal" with the bright sunny morning.
I got a big kick out of this book, even with the continual intermittent Manga eyes in the art. All in all, I liked it.

As an Odd Thomas fan, I picked up all three graphic novels on a whim. While comparatively short relative to his normal books, they're hard to put down, and the length actually helped keep me invested in them.

This last one is probably my least favorite of the bunch. It's still good fun with the typical Koontz twists and flair, but it contains some of his old, preachy tropes too. In particular, it features negative stereotyping of people from Hollywood. It also doesn't help matters that the story is set almost exclusively in a "haunted house" of sorts. Still, it was worth the read, and I'll be glad to pick up any new graphic novels in the series if they ever get made.

Terza graphic novel dedicata a Odd Thomas.

Just wonderful! The illustrations are as charming as the story. If you read the Kindle version, the flow is perfect (unlike the one of the previous in the series). Odd are Stormy have the most beautiful relationship and they get into all kids of mesmerizing trouble, but they're the perfect team to deal with such shenanigans. If you're an Odd Thomas fan (and who isn't?), you'll love this installment (#3) in the series. Onto the novel that started it all - Odd Thomas!

Illustrations by "Queenie" Chan are great & makes its simple to follow. Ozzie Boone (Odd's mentor) asking Odd Thomas & Stormy Llewellyn to help Ms. Nolan with her haunted house. A CISI (Calif. Institute of Supernatural Investigation) crew of 4 goes to help & can't match Odd & Stormy to find a broken pentagram - the key in the this "comic".

I love the character of Odd Thomas so I gave this book a try. It was very repetitive to me, and I might have liked it more if I read it before the first novel in the series by Dean Koontz. This seemed like a simple short story, suited for a younger audience. I prefer the original Odd Thomas series.

This is my favorite of the 3 graphic novels. The art style developed greatly since the first and the story felt more along the lines of an Odd Thomas novel~ melancholy macabre. I'm glad he kept it to these three~ The written novels give such a gorgeous atmosphere~ more than the illustrated version, in my opinion.

Beyond EBN 2023

We are back to before Book 1 of the series. Odd and Stormy are sent to help a friend of Ozzie Boone with her haunted house, but what is happening is much more evil. They are joined by a team of Hollywood Paranormal Investigators, CISI... I enjoyed the book and the images were well done.

MUCH better! A huge improvement from the second to the third book. The story was good, and the drawings were well done. A solid 3.5 stars, right up there where I placed most of the rest of the Odd Thomas series. Well done!

I enjoy Odd's world. I've only read the first book but I can definitely see it being a series I will dip into when I want to treat myself.
I wish I had known this was a prequel before reading because I was fairly confused about the characters.
Gotta love any story that has some evil cats in it!

Last of the graphic novels and I loved them all. This one was more paranormal than the other but a great collaboration. I really enjoyed having my favorite couple together again.

Not as good as the first two graphic novels. The story was too flawed for me to really enjoy. If you can get past the flaws, the extra bit of time in Odd's journey with Stormy is nice.
