In his debut collection At Home With the Horrors, Sammy Scott proved that not even the familiar comforts of your own home can provide true respite from lurking terror. And now, with his follow-up collection BEWARE OF THE HORRORS, Scott asks the reader to step outside and explore what might be waiting just around the next corner. A jaded, “seen-it-all” horror enthusiast learns that there are still chills to be found in modern cinema. A couple quickly regrets setting foot inside a mysterious vintage arcade. A young man comes to understand the curse behind knowing his future. Twins with a psychic connection find themselves trapped inside a completely dark room. A simple prank spirals out of control for four teenagers with a successful YouTube channel. An introverted husband’s reality is flipped upside down during a Murder Mystery dinner party. An influencer pays the price for testing an app that allows the user to skip forward in reality. These stories and more beckon the reader to sit down, get comfortable, and step into a world where everything you thought you knew can change in the blink of an eye. Go ahead. Turn the page.
Exploring both the ordinary and the extraordinary, the fantastic and the mundane, the unsettling and the terrifying, these fourteen tales first take you gently by the hand before tightening their grip, a threat, unspoken, of never again letting you go. In BEWARE OF THE HORRORS, Scott brings nightmares into the waking world, demonstrating that the familiar, the routine, and the predictable are mere doorways into unspeakable terror. Beware.
"Sammy Scott is phenomenal. Sharp, fresh, smart writing ensconced in energy and wit. The rhythm here is the loud beating of drums in the dark. That’s Sammy playing. And he pulls off the feat all horror authors covet, whether they say so or he scares the hell out of you." — Josh Malerman, New York Times bestselling author of Incidents Around the House and Pictures of You
"Beware of the Horrors is the kind of collection I would recommend to a reader who doesn’t quite know what flavor of the genre they most connect with. Sammy Scott writes stories that, in equal measure, know exactly where they belong while simultaneously eschewing any concrete definition. He writes characters who feel as though they’ve lived lives before we meet them, and puts them through scenarios with a level of proficiency typically expected of people with the last name King or Barker. Beware of the Horrors is an outstanding collection of stories to which the title most definitely applies. Because beyond everything else, Sammy Scott doesn’t forget what readers want the stories are scary." — Nick Botic, author of The Ash Episode
“Here lie 14 contemplations on death, despair, and our most primal fears. Sammy’s poetic storytelling lingers in the mind long after the final page, and even in dreams, I remember.” - Felix Black, author of The Sorrowstones
"Sammy Scott unleashes his unapologetic brand of uncanny terror, once again establishing himself as the unrivaled king of underground horror.” — Nick Roberts, bestselling author of Mean Spirited
“With his second collection, Sammy Scott once again proves his talent for crafting stories that get under your skin. Each tale offers its own brand of horror, leaving you with plenty to fear. Beware of the horrors that await you.” — John Durgin, bestselling author of I Woke Up A Final Girl and The Envelope
Another absolutely fantastic short story collection from Sammy Scott. I was a little nervous going into this one because At Home with the Horrors has become my favorite horror book of all time. Years after first reading it... I STILL think about a couple of those stories ALL the time. And when you love something that much and it has such an impact on you...how can that magic possibly be recreated?
Well...he did it. Somehow...he did it. Only one story in this collection was 3 stars for me...all the rest were 4 or 5 stars. And let me tell you ..those 5 star stories? They will absolutely haunt me the way stories from At Home with the Horrors did.
My favorites from this collection were:
Twins Off-Line Mama Bear When You See It Endless Summer
Highly recommend this one and At Home with the Horrors.
So Sammy doesn’t throw down a lot of flash and bang, or spill a lot of blood and guts, but his stories still consistently raise the hair on the back of my neck, put a chill into my heart and soul, and bend my brain six ways to Sunday. So I guess you could call him a pretty visceral storyteller.
Exactly like At Home With the Horrors, Beware of the Horrors delivers story after story after story. There is no weakness here. And with his final act, Sammy absolutely nails you with Endless Summer, one of the most heartfelt and heartbreaking stories I’ve ever read. It put a softball sized lump in my throat. Especially after the loss of my brother earlier this month, it was almost unbearably poignant.
He’s got all sorts of flavors of horror here from the sci-fi leaning Off-Line (which had me staring at the wall in abject terror, thinking, thinking, thinking) and When You See It, to the wicked sub-genre double-dipping Dead Weight (you have NEVER read a zombie ghost story like this!), to the dark, dark meta humor of About Writing, to nightmare inducing creature action, claustrophobic social anxiety, haunting ghosts…yeah, he’s left very few stones unturned. The variety of themes, tones, styles, and devices are expansive and satisfying, and I loved every second of all of it. I enthusiastically recommend this to all book lovers.
