Annie's Room

Rate this book
1945 and 2015. Seventy years apart, two girls named Annie move into the same room in the same remote house. Their lives are very different, but tragedy is about to bring them crashing together. Annie Riley has just broken both her legs. Unable to get out of bed, she's holed up in her new room and completely reliant upon her family for company. She's also the first to notice a series of strange noises in the house, but her parents and brother think she's just letting her imagination run overtime. And then, one night, Annie realizes that while she's trapped in her bedroom, something sinister is haunting the rest of the house... Seventy years ago, Annie Garrett lived in the same house with her parents. This Annie, however, was very different. Bitter and vindictive, and hopelessly devoted to her father, she developed a passionate hatred for her mother. History records that Annie eventually disappeared while her parents were executed for her murder, but what really happened to Annie Garrett, and is her ghost still haunting the house to this day? Annie's Room is the story of two girls whose lives just happened to be thrown together by an unlikely set of circumstances, and of a potent evil that blossomed in one soul and now threatens to consume another.

This is an awesome ghost story with a good, creepy feel to it. At first it seemed as though it was meant for younger audiences. It had an R.L. Stine's Goosebumps sort of feel to it. And then...it didn't. It grew progressively dark and disquieting.

Seventy-one years ago, Annie Garrett lived in the same house, within the same room, as Annie Riley, whose family just moved in from New York. Poor Annie Riley had a biking accident which left both of her legs in hard casts. She has been bedridden since her arrival to the new house. When she sees a woman wearing a white dress near the garden, her mother is quick to dismiss her sighting as part of her overactive imagination. After all, being holed up in a room with nothing to do can get those creative juices flowing, right? Only, what happens when other members of her family begin experiencing supernatural occurrences?

Written from shifting perspectives, between the two Annies, the momentum of this story builds with each chapter. The transformations of certain characters are startling and their actions even more shocking. This story is suspenseful and compelling.

It's the perfect quick read for a chilly, spooky October night!

If ghosts and creepiness scare you...don't open this book!!

Annie and her family move from New York to an old home in a small town out in the openness of land.

 photo tumblr_n96e2f2nJy1slpn8go1_400_zpsodjrlnyf.gif

Annie doesn't like this move but she has little choice as she is confined to her new room after breaking both her legs in a biking accident.

From the start of this book, Annie senses there is someone else's presence in the house.

She has seen this other presence out her window.

Annie learns from a visitor that this house hasn't been lived in for 71 years. Not since a muder occured, leaving the house haunted by a spirit.

We are introduced to the haunting back story of Annie Garret. Just as present day Annie believes it is Annie Garret haunting their life, she learns in horror that it is actually Annie Shaw, a young girl who drowns in a lake behind the house that is back for the love she always wanted but never had due to her death.

The only way for her to feel this love, is to take over the life of an Annie. Her first try at feeling that love failed 71 years ago, but now, present day, this Annie will do just fine.

"Annie Shaw is finally happy now, though; she gets to feel everything I feel, she gets to experience real love through me, and it's all she's ever wanted."

This is a novella length story that follows two Annie's in 1945 and 2015. With modern day Annie, her legs are broken and she's stuck in her room, mostly hearing what's going on around her. What is going on around her is her family moved into a house that's been abandoned for 70 years and five days later everything is falling apart. It was a tense story, getting creepier as Annie starts to see the changes happening in her family so quickly.

Past Annie has a dark (very dark) streak, and some of those chapters were hard to read. There's some truly awful abuse, and I wish there had been more backstory to how it all started.

The ending was chilling, but in the age of the internet probably untenable.

As other reviewers have pointed out there were quite a few typos, and given the volume of work that this author has written I would expect better editing?

What a creepy little story. I just flew through it. A creepy old house at the edge of the forest and a lake. Magical. Oh and the ghosts, must never forget the ghosts.

3 1/2 hours just flew by. It’s such a gripping little ghost story. Three girls named Annie, two dead ofcourse, a family going to hell pretty fast after moving houses and a past kept hidden. Oh so perfect. Must say the twists are really wonderful and I didn’t expected that ending. Well not all of it but some of it.

A really easy read. Love the taste of creepy women in white moving around hallways on pages. It’s been a while I read about them.

Wow! This book was not what I expected, but it was really good.
Annie and her family just moved into a new house. She, having two broken legs, is confined to her new room. Soon her parents begin acting strangely and weird things are being heard and seen around the house. Soon Annie finds she is hopeless to stop the past evil that is coming for her.

This book was really a wild ride. It's not your normal ghost story and so it seemed a lot more frightening. It was full of action and terror. It told a haunting tale of what a child will do for love. I read this book in one sitting and was completely sucked into the mystery of this house and the previous family.

Amy Cross won me over once again with this book.

Spooky!

A dead little girl wants to be a part of a family and is prepared to do anything for that wish to come true. Across the decades, she reaches out with her malign influence to attract suitable families to her house. When they arrive the horrors begin again! This was a short but, very spooky story. Well recommended!

Any Cross is an insanely talented author. This isn’t the first book I’ve read by her, and I’m always so impressed with her ability to make you feel like you’re there, in the world she created. This is a short, novella length read that packs an impressive, scary punch.

Annie’s Room is told in alternating POVs of the two young Annie’s. Two girls 70 years apart. Annie 1 is a ghost, haunting her old house in hopes of finding herself a new family. Fun fact about this Annie? She disappeared 70 years ago ti uhhh Annie 2 ( the alive Annie ) and her family have moved into this home fairly recently. She’s stuck in bed due to two broken legs l, and she starts hearing some weird noises and the like. Her sibling and parents think she’s imagining things; which always happens in horror books / movies. 🤦🏽‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

The character development and world building was great. As usual. I think the author did an amazing job with the suspense and “thriller/horror” aspects of the book as well!

I’ll definitely read more by Amy Cross

Short Take: She was the best of Annies, she was the worst of Annies….

This was another one of those books that I grabbed when it was offered for free. I’ve actually downloaded far more of those than I will probably read in this lifetime, but hey, free books, right? So I tend to download a bunch of them then forget doing so.

In any case, I grabbed a few by Amy Cross, and when I went to put them in my “to be read” folder, I noticed that I already had one of hers in there - Annie’s Room. So being the absent-minded nerd that I am, I was like huh? Where did this come from? I checked on Amazon, and sure enough, it looked familiar, and Amazon told me I had purchased it. So I decided to forego the books I had just downloaded, and read Annie’s Room instead. Which is my long-winded way of saying, sometime in the next few months, I will be wondering why I have all these books by Amy Cross in my folder, and why does the name Annie’s Room ring a bell?

So: the basics. Annie’s room is about a young girl named Annie Riley, who moves with her parents and younger brother Scott from New York City to an isolated house in the country, for reasons that are never really explained. Annie has just been in a terrible accident, and is confined to bed with both legs in casts. While they are moving in, a “neighbor” (who lives a couple of miles away) drops in, and shares some very creepy facts with Annie: seventy years ago, another teenage girl named Annie lived in the same house, in the same room, and disappeared. Annie Garrett’s parents were later executed for her murder, despite the lack of a body.

From there, we get timelines that switch back and forth, between Annie Riley in the present day, with strange things happening in the house, and Annie Garrett in the 1940’s, with terrible things happening in the house. It all leads up to a crazy, rain-and-storm-filled climax where the past and the present collide, with horrific results.

There are a lot of things to love about Annie’s Room. For starters, it’s a haunted house story, and anyone who follows this blog knows that they are my favorite. Annie Garrett’s story is intriguing and brutal. I figured out fairly early on what happened to her, but the story was incredibly compelling just the same. Watching this family unravel in such terrible ways isn’t something I enjoyed, exactly, but I couldn’t stop reading until I understood it completely. And the scene where Annie’s mom can’t stop crying is going to stay with me for the foreseeable future.

The present day scenes with Annie Riley, however, didn’t feel as fleshed-out. We don’t get much of a sense of who Annie is. She bickers with her younger brother, seems to love her parents but still smarts off to them in eye-rollingly typical teenage style, and doesn’t want to leave the city or her friends there. It should be noted that we don’t ever actually hear anything about these friends, other than that she doesn’t want to leave them. Her interactions with her family are pretty minimal before the bad stuff starts happening, so when the terrible things occur, it’s hard to get really emotionally engaged. We see Annie being bored, some hints that there’s some supernatural force at work, a few brief conversations that consist mainly of “seriously, when will the internet be hooked up?” and… that’s pretty much it.

Ms. Cross would’ve also benefited from a good editor - there were quite a few typos and spelling errors that were distracting from the overall story.

That said, Annie’s Room was definitely enjoyable. I really loved the pace of it, and the intertwining timelines, and the hints of a darker, deeper history than what we are allowed to see. Check it out if you are looking for a quick, fun, scary read.

An abandoned house for 71 years finally have a new occupants. A neighbor, kind enough to come over and told the occupants of the haunted facts about said house. And my first thought was...run!!!

Annie Riley, her parents and younger brother, Scott, moved into the house. She was confined in bed because of an accident. From the start, she knew or felt there's another presence in the room.

Annie Garrett disappeared one day and her parents were executed for said crime. Her life story was dark and eerie.

And the plot twist...wow!!!

"Annie Shaw is finally happy now, though; she gets to feel everything I feel, she gets to experience real love through me, and it's all she's ever wanted."

* * *

How do one review a horror/mystery/thriller without revealing anything and everything?

Annie Riley, the first Annie readers get to meet is a typical rebel teenager, who can annoy you in so many different ways. Let just say, this Annie gets the ball running.

Annie Garrett however was compelling. This Annie is the one that get the story going. Her story is chilling to the bone.

The ending was a bit confusing. The reason was because we got the story of the two Annie but not in detail. What was with the father's complex? I mean what kind of pure thought you wanted from me when a teen girl was obsess with her dad. And then when the plot twist was revealed, I was like, what kind of a child prefer her dad more than her mom? Where's the story to explain that?

This books has two stories, one in the past, one in the present. They both interwine in a partially successful way. There is a creepy environment throughout, but some plot holes. If Annie wanted a family life, why would she get rid of the mom? Why would she want an angry dad? Why would she want to sleep on the same bed as her dad, taking the mom's role? What did the brother see? If dead Annie possessed live Annie when the mom was still alive and half-buried, why would they unbury her out only to lock her in the basement and keep her there?

Minor spoilers

“...but now I’m in darkness I feel quite certain that the little girl is still there, still watching from the grave.”ANNIE’S ROOM, Amy Cross.

This particular paranormal read was creepy enough to keep me engaged unit the end. The protagonist, or rather victim, Annie Riley, tells the story of how she and her family move to the New York countryside after her tragic biking accident that has left her bedridden with two leg casts straining her efforts for a decent summer.

Backtrack seventy-something years where Annie Clement and her reclusive family are living in the same household. Clement has a different story to tell; her father is barbaric, and what’s even more cruel, is the fact that she gets sadistic pleasure watching him torture her mother (sandpapered eyes, anyone).

Eventually, the two stories are meshed as one, and there’s a backstory involving a ghost in both periods. The presence is subtle at times, and things between both eras become a little too predictable, but I still recommend it.

I love horror books! I truly do. And Amy cross’ books are just the best! They're deeply unsettling and creepy. There are no jump scares. I haven't yet read a book which could actually scare the crap out of me. But for now I'll settle for unsettling storytelling. This one didn't disappoint.
Annie is well… there's two. Annie Garrett is an interesting character. She's what one would call a deeply psychopathic character. The other Annie, is a typical teenager. It starts slow there isn't much going on in the life of the second Annie. But Annie Garrett… her life is what makes this book interesting. And as a person who read the summary before starting the book, I was misguided. The actual twist however was pretty cool. It's definitely worth reading. Only once though… I don't think I could handle the creepiness much more than once.

Not the best Amy Cross story

I usually really like the stories written by Amy Cross but this one is not one of her better stories, in my opinion. It feels disjointed, at times rushed, and certain elements don't add up or make sense. For instance, modern day Annie has two very broken legs from falling off her bike. It is mentioned that she ran into a truck and another time that she went over a railing. Which is it? How are both of her legs broken but no injuries to her upper body? And where is her all-important father during the last "exciting" moments? How is a "happy family and childhood" consist of merely a father and daughter? Why would a or 10 year old even be concerned with keeping a clean house and cooking a good dinner? Answer: they wouldn't.

My Favorite of Amy Cross' Books

Wow. I've read several of Crow's novels but this was the best. The ending shocked me. Although she has written other horror books, this one is darker than her others. The plot revolves around Annie and her family's move to a strange old house. Because she broke both her legs, Annie is unable to escape from the frightening paranormal events she witnesses. As the novel progresses, Annie's father grows more and more unhinged. I'd definitely recommend this novel. Out of all her work, this is the story that will haunt you

Another deeply dark, and deceptively clever psychological thriller by Amy. This has to be another must read novel. Even early Freud himself, may have had trouble coming to terms, with this book's underlying concepts. Amy, so obviously, once again, has gone to greatest lengths of research to make sure this remarkable storyline remains gritty, interesting and on so many levels believable. Oedipus complex, was my recurring thought throughout this book. Brilliantly written, give stars all the way. Jim

A tale of many Annies...

This book has some creepy elements, but it mainly consists of doors opening/closing, bumps in the night, and shadows without much payoff on those scares. I didn't understand the logic behind the "ghost wrath" or frankly much of the plot logic. This reads more like a rough draft of a story, complete with grammatical errors, name and event inconsistencies, and a complete lack of unique character "voices" in their dialogue.

Also be warned that there is a good deal of violence against women, including a nauseating scene involving sandpaper.

Amy Cross is a prolific writer, and I haven't read all her books (yet), but they do tend to be entertaining and spooky, I did however find that midway through this book it took a deeply nasty, vicious turn and was a completely different book to what I'm used to reading from Amy Cross, it did drift back to the usual fare in the latter part of the book to what I would expect from Amy but boy did it go dark for a minute or two.
I thoroughly enjoyed this and I hope there are more like this amongst the ones I've yet to read. I definitely give this my recommendation.

Annie's Room by Amy Cross was such an interesting book. A little different than any book I've read before but I really liked it. It was funny at points but mostly very serious. How would you feel with two broken legs in cast and shut up on the top floor, can not get out of bed and not knowing what's going on in the rest of the house? You should really read this book. I think you'd enjoy it a lot.

I really can’t say I like this book. The plot and settings are kind of disturbing and the story is so freaking twisted... On the other hand, the creepy atmosphere and the surprising existence of the first Anne is great.
The most disturbing parts are both household violence and the creepy setting of the first Anne... The book reminds me a lot of the movie “Orphan”. Their cores are kind of similar.

Annie's room is definitely creepy.

Seventy one year's ago Annie Garrett and her family lived in the very house that Annie and her family just moved into. Strange noises and visions start from the beginning and with Annie stuck in bed in her room she can't figure out what could be happening. The ending will have your mouth hanging open in shock!

Horror is back

It has been a long time since I read a good horror novel. I'd never read Amy Cross so wasn't expecting Stephen King or John Saul but I was surprised. The book was good! Kept me engrossed in it. No lagging parts. If you like horror you will like this book.

This was everything I wanted in a horror novel. The actions of Annie in 1945 were very unsettling and you just want to find out how things are going to resolve themselves.

There are quite a few horror novels that I have been disappointed by. This definitely had all the necessary ingredients to make it an excellent read for me.

Strange reading

I enjoyed this book but felt very uncomfortable with its ending.Usually Amy's books have a happier conclusion but this one left me feeling as if it wasn't complete. I'd hoped this family would come through the dangers and win the scary situation they were in. But it didn't happen and I finished it feeling very uncomfortable.
