This text provides a map for charting the difficult waters that feminist theories have created in literary studies. Ruth Robbins shows the reasons for the development of feminist literary critiques, explains the difficulties and exposes some of feminism's blindspots. A wide range of theorists are discussed, ranging from Wollstonecraft to Kristeva, showing the ways in which materialist, psychoanalytic and literary accounts of feminist thinking creatively intersect. Through a series of readings, of texts such as The Picture of Dorian Gray and The Yellow Wallpaper, she also points out how the student reader can begin to make her or his own feminist criticism, and can learn to engage with both the politics and poetics of the literature.
Ruth Robbins is Professor of English Literature and head of the School of Cultural Studies and Humanities. Her work has focused on the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century, on autobiography, on literary theory and on particular writers such as Oscar Wilde and Arnold Bennett.
Ruth's research interests centre on the late-Victorian period in English literature, especially the literature of Decadence, and include the writings of Oscar Wilde, Arthur Symons and Vernon Lee - her book Pater to Forster, 1873-1924 (2003) deals with literature written in the late nineteenth and early twentieth-century period. Her recent book Oscar Wilde (2011) revisits her interests in the fin de siècle; additionally she is co-author of a book on the British Short Story (with Emma Liggins and Andrew Maunder, 2010).

Loads of detail and thought-provoking ideas in this easy-to-read but undoubtedly academic book. It covers a huge time span of womens writing, so is perfect for a broad scope of womens writing across the centuries, but not so much if the reader is looking for specific and detailed critical material about an author. Nevertheless, the authors it does discuss are referred to through fascinating insight and in a way that intelligently connects the movement and development of female writing since the 1800s.
ترجمه متوسط، ویرایش و نگارش ضعیف و بطور کلی مطالب کتاب نه چندان کارآمد اما حائز توجه و مطالعه. برای نقد ادبی کتاب مناسبی است به گمانم واقعا. البته برا شروع. در ایران وضعیت مطالعه فمینیسم، مخصوصا در حوزه ادبیات، یک وضعیت فراموش شده است.
