It's Christmas on Madrona Island and Cait and friends have plans to embrace the magic of the season. The only dark spot on their celebration is the fact that a miserly old landlord is set on evicting an apartment building full of tenants just days before Christmas. Cait makes it her mission to save the old building and is aided by a cat named Ebenezer as they try to convince the old man to change his mind. Things look hopeless when she realizes that an unsolved mystery may be behind the man's gruff exterior. Cait vows to solve the mystery as a means of softening the man's heart and saving the apartments. An impossible task? Maybe. But Cait knows that miracles are real and anything can happen at Christmas. Note for mystery This story involves a cold case mystery which is linked to a modern day problem but does not contain a present day murder.
Kathi lives with her husband, kids, grandkids, and dogs in beautiful Lake Tahoe. When she isn't writing, Kathi likes to read (preferably at the beach or by the fire), cook (preferably something with chocolate or cheese,) and garden (planting and planning not weeding). She also enjoys spending time on the water when she's not hiking, biking, or snowshoeing, the miles of desolate trails surrounding her home. Kathi uses the mountain setting in which she lives, along with the animals (wild and domestic) that share her home, as inspiration for her cozy mysteries.

Balthazar Pottage has chosen to demolish rather than upgrade an apartment building he owns on Madrona Island. This displaces 12 families who won't be able to find other affordable housing over Christmas. Cait decides to intervene and makes a deal with Balthazar to find his son who was kidnapped from the island 20 years earlier. With less than 30 days and Christmas celebrations and duties to handle can Cait find out what really happened and save the apartment building? This family and animal oriented cozy series continues to grow and expand in new directions that continue to entertain.
This was my Holiday theme read pick for the Creature Christmas and it was purrrrr-fect! (Yeah, I went for the cheap pun. It's Christmas, I'm allowed) This was a heartwarming tale that would be perfect as a Hallmark Christmas movie!
When Cait finds out that reclusive millionaire Balthazar Pottage sent eviction letters out to the tenants of his apartment building giving them 3 weeks to move out, she's determined to help the many people she knows who live there, Cait follows Balthazar's cat Ebenezer, back to the estate where she strikes a deal. If Cait can find Balthazar's long lost son, who was kidnapped over 20 years ago, then Balthazar will bring the building up to code and gift it to the tenants. It's a big task to solve a cold case and Cait manages to do it by Christmas. It was pretty easy to figure out what happened right from the start but it was full of holiday cheer and the spirit of the season and made for a perfect Christmas read.
The Cat of Christmas Past is the 6th book in the Whales and Tails Mystery series by Kathi Daley. Creativity and an imagination flows smoothly on to every page bringing us a continuation of the adventures of Caitlin Hart (Cait) and her friends in the Madrona Islands. This adventure introduces, Ebenezer, a cat sent by Tansy and Bella to assist Cait in solving the mystery. Christmas is quickly approaching and the residents of Madrona Island, part of the San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington, are making plans for family and community festivities. Sadness envelopes the “locals” as word spreads that a wealthy, elderly land owner intends to evict the renters in a decrepit apartment building he owns and sell the land for a condo development. Ebenezer leads Cait to the reclusive, Balthazar Pottage, and the true mystery begins. To save the building, Cait and friends seek to learn what really happened to Balthazar’s infant son on the day he was christened and his wife soon afterward. Typical of small town living, as questions are asked and lead to answers, the gossip mill is active, as well as scandal(s), making room for more questions, that lead to answers. There are twists and turns to the plot and mysteries abound together with the revelation of many secrets. The characters are well developed and relationships are continuing o grow. A new character, Alex Turner, is introduced to the series. This story is quite touching and perfect for the Christmas season and Christmas miracles!
The Cat of Christmas Past can be enjoyed without reading the earlier books in the series. However, I prefer to read the series in order. I like the continuity, as well as the setting for the novel, the small town on the island. And, of course, the cats! I highly recommend this novel for readers of all ages who enjoy cozy mysteries with a potential to include romance, in which the sleuth is a feisty young woman. There are delicious recipes included in the book, and I am looking forward to sampling a number of them.
Book Six in the Whales and Tales Cozy Mystery Series
Cait is a perfect heroine...she has family, friends, a cute and wonderful boyfriend, and a penchant for solving mysteries on her lovely island. This mystery is, fortunately, not about a dead body that she is led to by a mysterious cat...it is a missing baby, unhappy millionaire, and an apartment building full of almost displaced people.
I actually kept up and figured out the mystery this time!! I love Kathi Daley books - she is a great entertainer! This book was a quick and cozy read - and very entertaining!
A mystery without a murder - what a refreshing change! I really liked this book - the cover immediately draws you in and gets you in the holiday mood. The sense of community, the closeness of friends and family, the northwest setting and of course the mysterious cat and mystery all combine to make this book one of my favorites of the series. Cozy fans will enjoy the story and those who have not yet discovered Kathi Daley are missing out - all of her books are well written and the stories are entertaining good reads.
I always enjoy Kathi Daley's stories, but this one just touched my heart especially. Maybe because it was a Christmas tale with a Christmas miracle? Maybe I'm just sentimental. But whichever, I really enjoyed this light cozy tale, just perfect for the upcoming holiday season.
I totally enjoyed this gem of a book. The 20 year old mystery was an awesome one. A tough one to crack. How can you solve a crime committed 20 years ago that the cops couldn't work out? A little cat named, Balthazar joins in to help solve the mystery. I love this series! Includes recipes that sound wonderful!
I am surprised that I liked these books so much. With all that is going on in the world today they are light reading and fun. Caitlin and her best friend Tara run a bookstore on the wharf on Madrona Island in the North west. Caitlin finds out that the owner of and affordable apartment complex has sent the residents a letter evicting them on December 31st. They will have no where to go, Caitlin is asked to help stop the evictions. She visits the apartment owner and makes a deal. His son went missing 20 years ago, she must find him or the apartment closes. Can one of her mysterious cat visitors help her solve the kidnapping? Her brother Danny, her boyfriend Cody, Finn the island deputy, Maggie the aunt who raised her and Sibohn her older sister all pitch in to help solve the mystery.
3.5 stars So, not really a lot happened in this book, but that's not really a criticism - I think it was just right for the story being told. It was an enjoyable holiday read. The main character is putting together a church Christmas pageant, and doing all the other holiday necessities, when she finds out the local mogul is evicting a low-income apartment building in order to build condos. She visits him, reads to him (A Christmas Carol), and makes a deal with him that involves her solving a 20-year-old cold case.
The fact that this isn't a Hallmark Christmas movie is shameful. This was the schmaltziest, sappy holiday story I've ever read, but it completely fits into that genre of movies my mom can't seem to watch enough of. Small towns full of precious people, a cat cafe, and a plucky heroine who solves mysteries with the help of local cats? Sounds like a made-for-tv movie staring a slightly washed up 90s/early 2000s sitcom star!
While this was included in the "Romancing the Holidays" eBook bundle, it is not a romance. The only romantic element is the fact that the heroine has a boyfriend and they say sappy, lovey things to each other on occasion. This is a cozy mystery. I am assuming this series mostly revolves around murder, but this book features a 20 year old kidnapping case being handled by our Mary Sue heroine and a cat who is smart enough to take ferries and bring seemingly random young men to bookstores. Apparently cats feature in all the stories, which kind of makes me want to read them, but Cait, the heroine, is too much of a Mary Sue for me. The woman is perfect; I wanted to strangle her by page 5.
This is clearly a series, but I had no trouble understanding the scenario. I'm sure reading the other books would improve the reader's enjoyment, but it isn't essential to understanding the plot. There actually is quite a lot of plot in this story, but it was very transparent and the mystery was laughably easy to solve.
If you enjoy cozy mysteries and cats, you'll probably like this one. That's not really my jam, but it wasn't all around awful and unreadable. Just a little too perky, cheerful, and perfect for me.
I loved this book from the start. Kathi Daley never disappoints her readers. It is always a great time to read one of her books but especially this one with the holidays fast approaching. This will lift your spirits and get you into Christmas and all the love and joy it brings. I must say my favorite part of this book is the modern day Scrooge concept. Especially Ebenezer the cat. It is a magical Christmas on Madrona Island. Full of joy, laughter, and a 20 year old mystery??? Everyone appears to be in the Christmas spirit except old man Balthazar Pottage. He is determined to make everyone at the Bayview Apartments have a not so Merry Christmas. He figures if he is miserable that everyone else should be too. Caitlin has a ton of things on her mind besides Cody, her very sweet boyfriend. She is in charge of getting the Christmas play and Choir with over 30+kids organized and off without a hitch. She is also worried about Destiny and the big decision she will have to make soon. On top of all of this she is told about the apartments. She wants to find a way to save them or at least slow the process down till after the new year. She and Mr. Scrooge, I mean Mr Pottage make a deal. Caitlin has 3 weeks to solve a mystery that hasn't been solved for 20 years to try and save the apartments. Will she be able to solve this mystery in time? She will have to call in the help of all her friends and family and hopefully with a little Christmas magic Madrona island will have a Merry Christmas after all.
A definite 5 star read. Another winner from Kathi Daley. I was so excited about this sixth book of the Whales and Tails series that I preordered the book in order to have it as soon as it went live. While there is only one spiritual cat, instead of the three ghosts of past, present and future, he plays his part well, when he isn't lounging by the fire.
Even if you have parts of the mystery figured out early, you will still be captured by the storyline and won't want to set this book down until all the puzzle pieces have come together. Some clues come from unexpected sources. You can read this as a stand alone but I suggest you also pick up the other books in this series and enjoy them as well.
A wonderful cold case mystery that is in need of a Christmas miracle. We again get to enjoy the friendship of the residents of Pelican Bay and the Coffee Cat Bookstore and see how they pull together, not only to solve a mystery but to ensure that no one spends a holiday alone.
The Christmas season and the magic felt during that season has come to Madrona Island. Caitlin Hart and her boyfriend, Cody West, are preparing the children of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church for the Christmas pageant. A time when all should be joyful is soon turned dim due to information that the Bayview Apartment complex was being sold and all tenants were being given notice they must move out by the first of the year. Unfortunately many of the tenants did not have anywhere to turn. A visitor in the form of a cat named Ebenezer has been sent to Cait to assist her as she attempts to convince the owner of the apartment complex, Balthazar Pottage, not to sell the complex and to go through with fixing up the complex. Mr. Pottage agrees to consider doing this if Cait and her friends can find his son who was kidnapped many years ago on Christmas Eve. You will lose track of time when reading and continuing until the end.
I loved this book, I found it refreshing in fact that there is no dead body but there is a mystery to solve. Cait finds that apartments are to be torn down and many people evicted before Christmas so she goes to talk to the owner Balthazar, the owner. He gives her the chore of finding his son who disappeared as a baby and he may save the apartments. We are then taken on a trip with twists and turns as to what happened many years ago. I think that I was piecing it together a little faster than Cait but what a fun read. I will definitely continue on with series. There is also the extra bonus of recipes.
It is Christmas season at Madrona Island and Cait and the gang is once again busy with season activities. But things are not so festive when an elderly land owner has decided to kick out his tenants of his rundown apartment building.
Cait finds herself involve in saving the building with the old man’s cat Ebenezer. In order to save the building, she must find out what happened to the man’s kidnapped six month old son on his christening day. What really happened that day and is the son still alive?
Once again another interesting read and no dead bodies this time.
How delightful and unusual to read a delicious mystery without a murder! Kathi Daley has crafted a wonderful, heartwarming Christmas story centered around a miserly man and the 20 year old kidnapping of his son. Located on a scenic island near Seattle, the place just oozes charm and Winter Wonderland. The characters are the kind of folks you'd love to have for neighbors, and the plotting is impeccable. THE CAT OF CHRISTMAS PAST is a great addition to the Christmas Cozy Genre. I received a Kindle edition of this book from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I've been a fan of this series since book one. I love the island description and the characters all feel like friends. This particular story was great, I loved the twist with Ebenezer and the plot itself was interesting. I had figured out some of it, but there were some good surprises mixed in as well. It's nice to read a good holiday mystery with a bit of love and romance mixed in.
Kindle Unlimited liked it but didn't love it hence 4 stars. Wasn't anything stupid such as typos or anything like that, just didn't love this.

This is not a retelling of "A Christmas Carol". Sure, there may be some similarities in some of the characters, but the story itself is far removed from that classic.
When Christmas came to Madrona Island nobody was expecting to get evicted from their home. But that is exactly what might happen if Cait and her friends can't solve the 20 year old mystery of who kidnapped Charles Pottage, the infant son of the wealthy recluse and owner of the Bayview Apartments.
This is a good fun read, with clean language and no "adult situations". The only reason I took away 1 star was that I had it solved 1/3 of the way in. So the mystery was a bit basic to me. But it was still enjoyable to see how our hero, Cait, solved it.
As Cait and friends are getting ready for the Christmas play and holiday, one of the children says they're being made to move. Turns out the owner wants to tear the building down and sell the land. Cait sets out to ret and save the building and help the families who live there. Can she get through the mean old man before he goes through with his plans? This heartwarming story is full of adventure and surprises. It has moments that reflect The Christmas Carol but it had its own story to be told. I really enjoyed this book. 5 stars and a smile on your face is what you will get at the end.
Although there are parts of the story that are predictable very early on, I still enjoyed this little mystery. I loved the cozy bookstore on the harbor setting, especially as it is tied to a cat adoption facility. Since I love cats, I found Ebenezer to be quite purrrfect although too predictably named for the owner's character. Very simple, yet enjoyable read for Christmas mystery and kitty fans.
Cait is back with her crew to solve a different kind of mystery. No one has died, she just needs to find a young man that went missing twenty years ago when he was six weeks old. She agreed to help in return for saving an apartment building. Should be a piece of cake, she just has to juggle the investigation as well as getting ready for Christmas.
I had already read this book and reviewed but my rating and review dissapeared! I can't remember what all I said but I do remember liking this story. It was a fun mystery to figure out. Having some sort of reselution to why grumpy apartment owner made the deal to keep them as they are instead of removed families from their homes was a long shot in my opinion. But the book doesn't dissapoint on a happy ever after.
I know this is supposed to be a Cozy Mystery, but it's not at all what I expected! What an awesome surprise to find a mystery that was easily and happily solved. It is a wonderful rendition of A Christmas Carol, only with Ebeneezer being a cat! If it wasn't for the cat, I wonder if Pottage's son would have ever been found. It was a delightful Christmas mystery.
Although I realized very early on the answer to the "mystery," Ms. Daley has a wonderful writing style, which makes it a pleasure to just read and enjoy, even if you know exactly where the story Is going! This series has been quite interesting, with the cats being sent to help solve the mysteries. Always an entertaining read!
This is a fun mystery with Cait searching for a wealthy man's son whom he has not seen for 20 years. With the help of his car aptly named Ebenezer, she investigates. Cait prepares for Christmas, runs her shop, and gets the children ready for the church Christmas while investigating. This is a charming story.
Ebenezer the Cat shows up to help Cait with her latest mystery and it isn't a murder but rather finding a 20 year old kidnapping victim. A lonely, mean old man give evictoon noticec to 12 families; Cait takes her concerns to the old man and forges a bargain so the families can stay. Heartwarming and enjoyable story.
What a wonderfully fun Christmas read!! Miracles can happen during the Christmas season!! Love this mixture of a mystery and how making the right decision can turn into something wonderful! ~Raelene~
