Romances tend to run like an assembly line, whirring and thunking along until it's time for the happily-ever-after whistle to blow. The task of a skilled writer is to hide the machinery, to draw the reader so deeply into the lives and emotions of the characters that they forget about the gears and sprockets grinding away behind the curtain. I felt the hum of the factory here; I smelled the grease, saw the wheels turning and was keenly aware of the conveyor belt moving me from section to section.

Things happened quickly and were steadily checked off like bullet points on a list. Lesbian in hardware store to establish butch factor. Check. Straight, sexy starlet added for femme factor. Check. Softball game to establish common interest. Check. Reading to kids in hospital and a single teardrop to introduce butch's softer side. Check. And so on and so on. There was no time to breathe, to reflect, to feel, just check, check, check. It was like watching sausage being made.

Added to this was the overall simplicity of the sentences. Adjectives were uncommon and adverbs simply didn't exist. As a result, the sentences felt flat and lifeless, just gears whir-thunking away. They were statements of fact bereft of inflection or nuance.

Furthermore, opportunities for the romantic leads to interact were simply skipped in the rush to reach the next bullet point. Early in the book during the aforementioned "reading to kids in hospital" scene, the two leads had yet to really say more than a few words to one another. Showing the give-and-take as they read lines from the story would have been a great opportunity to demonstrate some chemistry, but it never happened. One paragraph has them arriving, the next says they're reading, the next has a tear running down Quinn's cheek as they leave. Annnnnd, scene. No show, all tell.

The celebrity romance isn't a new idea. It's been done, and it's been done well. The Gravity Between Us, Glass Houses and The Blind Side of Love (my personal favorite) are just a few of the titles worth the time and money. This particular book, "The Movie Star: A Lesbian Romance," may have been free(ish) to me due to Kindle Unlimited, but I'll never get my 30 minutes back. And I want them back.

I won't rate this book with stars, since I couldn't make it past the 20% mark and it seems unfair to drag the author's work down in the ratings based solely on partial information. It is worth mentioning, however, that I've now read somewhere in the neighborhood of 150 lesbian romances, and this is only the second to earn a "did not finish" label. Take from that what you will.

I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone, it just isn't worth your time. It's poorly written and it's plot... Is there a plot at all?

Very Nice Romance

I love books by Lydia Rose. "The Movie Star", is a nice and easy to read romance. A little bit of drama, but mostly two women with completely different lives, falling in love.
