Journey of Dreams- Dreams have a way of infusing themselves into our souls–becoming an indivisible part of who we are. Five lives irrevocably change when their greatest longings become their new reality–and for one, vice versa. The Journey of Dreams series is Contemporary Christian Fantasy, exploring the desires of our hearts and how the Lord meets them. ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ Introspection–this place invites it. I’ve never allowed myself the time to pause and get to know myself. My father taught me it was weak. Focus on the prize–eyes off yourself. The goal matters. The Journey of Dreams series explores themes in the Christian life from a different perspective–from a world that can’t exist anywhere but in the dreams of the people who live there. Editorial Review Ms. Havig drops a modern young athlete (nearly naked!) into a remote, bizarre community. He is confused. He is horrified. He wonders if he has died and is in some sort of afterlife. And then, with perfect, almost elegant pacing, the story unfolds, revealing a fascinating world in which people have unquestioningly accepted every circumstance as the will of – gifts from – God. Our hero struggles with understanding their beliefs – and so does the reader. The themes of extreme submission and gratitude are thought-provoking in this context. ~Cathe Swanson

Oh, was this bio day? Oops! I forgot. I was lost in my latest manuscript. Umm... bio. Yeah.
Hi! I’m Chautona Havig. (for those who care, that’s Shuh-TONE-uh HAVE-ig). Yeah. Just work with me here. I should have used a pseudonym, but when you grow up with a name like Chautona, it kind of sticks.
Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near. ~ Hebrews 10: 23–25
Those aren’t just words on a page for me–they’re why I write. I write to encourage my brothers and sisters in Christ. The stories I create are to make people laugh, cry, question, consider.
They’re for you.
When the world screams for hope, I try to point you to the true Source of hope–Jesus.
Sometimes life in the church no longer seems a refuge from the pain of a self-serving world around us, but through my stories, I try to point you to the only Refuge that can truly help–the Father’s Everlasting Arms.
And sometimes we just need an escape from the monotony, the emptiness we see around us. We need joy, laughter–what I like to call “just the write escape.”
Christian fiction without apology or pretense–lived, not preached. What does that even mean? It means I care–about you. About your walk with Jesus. I care about the words you put before your eyes, the mental pictures those words conjure. It’s difficult to express just how much I love my brothers and sisters in Christ. It’s difficult to share just how much I love you.
But I do.
And I write for you. I sit in my little house in California’s Mojave Desert and I write to show you why one sister believes one thing, why a brother believes another. I write to show you how some Christians handle trials or triumphs–for you. So when you’re faced with something–good or bad, it doesn’t matter–maybe it’ll spark a memory. Maybe that memory will smolder until you pull out your Bible and see what the Lord said about it–about His great love for you. For YOU!
And maybe, just maybe, you’ll share that love with another hurting, confused, or blessed-with-more-than-she-knows-what-to-do-with soul.
I just happen to think that’s the most blessed giving anyone could hope to receive.
This was an interesting read. I really enjoyed all of the characters. This made me laugh and cry. I do wish there might have been a little more about how Tony ends up in the Highlands and why he ends up there. I loved all of the lessons that he learns. I received a copy of this book from Celebratelit for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.
While I haven’t met even one of her books that I haven’t liked (a lot), the books of Chautona Havig’s Journey of Dreams series are far above and beyond the rest.
I read both of these books when they first came out, and preferred the first book, Prairie (I just might have read it two times in a row). Having now re-read Highlands and experienced the gamut of emotions it elicited in me, I am dying to re-read Prairie because I can’t imagine how it could be better than this one!
It is difficult to pick a genre for this book. Perhaps Speculative Fiction fits it best. It isn’t a typical Fantasy book, and yet it deals with the fantastical. It is a “What if you woke up in a foreign world that seems so similar to the one you know, and yet isn’t?” situation.
Told from Tony’s perspective, Highlands walks the reader through the first year of his life in this new world. Being in a place where his dad is not around to dictate every moment of his life causes Tony to mature and to see who he really is. He struggles to shake off the negativity and feelings of worthlessness from his upbringing. And yet, part of his growth was seeing the role that he played in his father’s perception of him.
The spiritual lessons in this story are poignant. The people of Highlands have a deep relationship with the Lord and a unique way of looking at things. I love the way the author used color-blindness to reflect a person’s lack of contentment. After all, doesn’t discontent cause life to lose its color?
Be warned that this book is not just a Journey of Dreams, but an emotional roller coaster that will have you smiling and oohing and then wiping tears away. It is a book that should be read slowly so you can savor it and not miss a word.

My Thoughts: What a great storyline!! This novel is one that I will certainly remember long after having read it! There is a very clear message running throughout the story: imperfect though we may be, God has a purposefor each and every one of us. Some of these imperfections, we need to deal with and others need to be embraced as part of us. Love and acceptance are the key to our future peace and happiness. The characters are so vividly described that the reader becomes a part of their lives experiencing every heartache and fear, as well as times of joy.. Tony discovers himself in a brand new environment, one that he has never heard of or seen before. His terror and confusion was felt as he stumbles along to find answers to his many questions. Why did God put him here?? Only this author could come up with such an appropriate setting , one that shows perfect examples of acceptance and contentment. Whatever God has given these individuals is appreciated and loved . If it is a challenge, then they deal with it in a positive way, trusting the Lord to know best. Scripture is used throughout this story giving one insight to the very different thinking of these unique individuals. If only all of us could think and live in such a world!! The plot seemed to be slow to develop but it steadily moved up in pace as my understanding of the characters became clearer. By the third chapter, my attention was caught up and I could NOT put this book down. I wanted to know where this community was, why was Tony there..... What was God's purpose in giving an insecure athlete such a strange new life?? As the book progressed, so did the tension . The answers to my many questions were not clear until I had read the last page!! Unexpected twists and turns captured and held me captive within Tony's rocky path of attempting to find happiness. The scriptures that were quoted really made me think. They were ones that I have heard often but this tale made me take them to heart. Thank you , Chautona, for making me more accepting of others and their challenges. This is definitely a thought provoking book that should not be missed!! It will live on in your soul long after reading.
Leave it to Chautona to totally take time away from my day. How? By simply writing a book. Every single book of hers that I read sucks me in and doesn't allow time for the outside world. You would think that by now I have learned that when Chautona's name is on the cover, I need to carve out some serious reading time. This book is no different. I read it all at once, while the outside world just continued without me. Here's the thing, yes this story is different. Yes, it's a little bit imaginative. Okay, a lot imaginative. But as you are getting caught up in Tony's world, and how he's going to get by and and grow in this new world of his, you see how this very story can apply to our own lives. And that is why I love Chautona's book. They make you think. They make you question how deep your faith is. They make you take a second glance at how you're living and if you're living for the Lord.
Tony needed to become the man God wanted him to be, but isn't that the same for all of us? The only difference is that Tony got to do it in this brand new world, and we have to do it here on earth. Yes, there are some heavy topics presented as well, but let's think about it. Aren't we surrounded by these very same topics, some a little closer to home than others? Of course we are. I applaud Chautona for her willingness to write the hard stuff. To present real people in real situations. She doesn't sugar coat it, and as Christians we need that in our lives. Heaviness aside, Chautona's quirky, fun, and uplifting writing will put a smile on your face, give you a laugh here and there, and speak to your heart. The exact things I want from every novel I read.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorbale review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I really liked "Highlands" by Chautona Havig. It is a wonderful story about accepting ourselves and others as God made us, but is also about accepting the help that is available to made us better people also. This story is also about grief and a suicide.
This book shows that people are able to hide what is really bothering them. This story also brings out truths that we as Christians need to be reminder as and to really let sink down into our inner beings such as "Jesus made us and when He creates something it is nothing but wonderfully, gloriouslycreated workmanship" and "We might not be worth much to anyone else, but we're everything to Jesus." There is even a lesson on what prayer is.
In the Highlands no money is not needed or used, but needs are met through the characters giving of themselves and their talents. What a great place the "real" world would be if it could be like where us readers live!
I enjoyed reading about the growth and acceptance of Tony as he learns to live in this new world that he arrives in.
As in most stories there is also a love relationship that doesn't happen peaceful but it gives us readers us laugh out loud scenes.
The ending makes me think there might be more books coming in this series, I hope so.
I was given a complimentary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit. These opinions are my own.
Years ago, soon after Prairie was released, I read it—and fell in love with the setting. Even better was the spiritual lessons woven so carefully into the plot; the book truly was a masterpiece! Not too long after that, Highlands was released, but I had moved on to other books, and it took a few years until I managed to get back to it. Although I didn’t enjoy Highlands quite as much as Prairie, it still had a lot of lovable elements and some deeper lessons to be learned.
I loved how realistic the story was; you could feel like you were actually in Highlands, even though it is a fantasy world. One of my favorite aspects of the book is that the world-building was done well—it’s an interesting mix of old-time and modern, and yet it doesn’t feel outrageous. I also fell in love with the people—what’s not to love about honest folk that just want to do what is best? In all, with the setting and faith elements, I felt like I came away with a lot to learn from. And it was a sweet story, too. Recommended, if you enjoy fantasy books with a bit of depth to them!
I am the first to say that I can't do fantasy books. But when Chautona writes a fantasy, this reader will read it. She has developed an intriguing idea and setting that left me curious. I thought that Tony was time traveling at first, but then I realized it was his dream/reality. Bryn meets Tony and is shocked (we all were he had boxers, and not the dogs). But soon these two grow into a possible future and Tony is questioning what and where he should be. As with many of Chautona's books readers will be gifted with beautiful descriptions and details that make them feel as though they are in the Highlands with Tony and Bryn.
I felt an immense amount of love for this story, the gray areas and the faith that was stitched into this novel. Does God give us a future in dreams, do we need to accept more? The answer for me is yes to both, and with this book you will be left with a fresh mind and heart for these questions. I highly recommend this book to any type of christian reader. It is not a book to turn away from.
I somehow missed book one in this series. This book is about Tony, a guy headed for the Olympics when it all comes apart. Or did it come apart? Tony has wakened in The Highlands, and it can feel rather crazy. Bryn, she's his friend in this strange place that looks like it came from the past. Tony has a challenge, can he move past the programming he's dealing with and become more, or is he not the person he thought he once was?
Disabilities, pain, acceptance, forgiveness, and growth are themes in this book. I liked it well enough, but sometimes it frustrated me. I struggled to like Tony for a while, possibly because I haven't always related well to jocks. I was glad when he started having growth and development.
My copy came from Celebrate Lit. My thoughts and opinions are mine, and this review is here of my own free choosing.
Chautona Havig's novels always combine humor with unique situations, creating stories that readers enjoy. Highlands was a little different than the other books I've read by this author. For one, it was a fantasy, so it takes place in Highlands, a fictional mountain that takes place in dreams. The pacing was good, keeping the story moving and making it a fun read.
It wasn't my favorite novel because I didn't like the first person POV as much as I like third person. However, the humor in Tony's thoughts engages your mind. The descriptions of this fictional place make it sound like the perfect place to visit. The colorful cast of characters entertain, while teaching you spiritual truths.
I highly recommend this book, and I'm giving it 4 stars. I was given a complimentary copy of this book. No review was required.
Mesmerizing, engaging, thought-and-emotion-provoking, probing and profound, deeply moving and memorable. Highlands, in true Chautona Havig style, provides readers a rare opportunity to come alongside the characters and personally dig deeper into their own thought patterns and faith life; to consider their own notions, opinions, prejudices, assumptions and misconceptions.
The second in her Journey of Dreams series, Highlands, is another extraordinary work from an author whose volumes span myriad genres and themes. Readers are in for a real treat with this one!
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book. A favorable review was not required, no compensation was received, and all views expressed are my own.
Tony ends up in Highlands but doesn’t know how or why. He meets Bryn first, he doesn’t have any family there and always wonders about them. The Highlands is so different from where he came from Los Angeles. Love how he teaches them things about his lifestyle and his belief. Some they really love trying out, like the different sports. Tony was an swimmer who wanted to complete in the Olympics. Tony was lost from his home and past but he made a new home . The book kept me interested through out, a lot of interesting characters. It did seem like a long book but had a lot of fun characters that kept me entertained. I received an complementary copy of the book from Celebrate Lit.
My Review Highlands is a fiction Christian fantasy type book. It is the second in a series. Tony wakes up in the middle of a forest. He has no idea where he is and when he finds people they have never heard of the hometown he wants to find his way back to. Bryn is a girl that helps him alot. This story revolves alot with learning to be content. This was a different but interesting read. Disclaimer: I was given a complimentary copy of this book but all thoughts and opinions are my own honest ones.
Highlands was an interesting book with the main character disappearing from the world he lives in and finding himself waking up in an alternate universe.
The people he meets in Highlands are caring and put aside the differences of others and embrace it as a gift from God. I loved the descriptions of the countryside and the characters became very real.
Highlands was a very enjoyable read with a profound message of love and spiritual insight.
I received a copy of the book from Celebrate Lit and voluntarily chose to review it.
This book will be in my thoughts for years. I laughed, I cried, I even stopped reading for days to let what I read sink into my spirit. I didn't want the story to end and in my mind, it never will. I highly recommend "Highlands" to everyone, you will be inspired to be your best you and see the best of others.
Highlands is the second book in this series after Prairie. Chautona Havig took a young man who unknowingly was tired of "running the race" and dropped him into a fantasy world where he would have to learn to be content. This series is masterful in the way the author built the characters to the point the reader feels what they are feeling. I can't wait for the next book in the series to come out.
One of the best books I have ever read. It was a fun read but also a meaningful read. Havig takes Christian Contemporary Fantasy to a deep level where we wrestle with God and the meaning of our life while we walk with characters so real we will never forget them. I cannot recommend this book and this series enough.
If I was Tony, I would be freaking out right now. He can't figure out where he is and it reminds me of feeling like you are in limbo between two worlds. Tony is one of these guys who is a gifted athlete. All he has known is to push himself and be the best at everything. I liked the idea that he was found almost naked because it reminded me of Adam. Adam was confused and didn't know where he was. God clothed him and gave him directions. Tony seems to be confused and is starting to become a flight risk. I can't blame him. If I woke up in a strange place, I would want to leave as fast as possible. Maybe it's the unknown that makes us want to run, because the unknown scares us. We don't have any control and that makes us feel vulnerable. I loved it when Bryn said, " Pride makes us do silly things." It makes us make bad decisions and hurt people . I really liked Bryn and found her to be very intuitive. As I was reading the book something caught my eye and made me stop everything. Tony says , " Even with a houseful of people, you'd be surprised how very alone you can feel." I can so relate to that statement. How many of us have people fooled? Everyone thinks you are on top of the world, but deep inside you are crying out for help? The book is very deep and I learned so much from this book. Tony having problems seeing colors is a great example of how we see things differently than others. Some people may be handicapped and to us they are flawed. God doesn't make mistakes and what we see as flawed is God showing how a handicap can be a blessing. We can overcome things if we stop feeling sorry for ourselves and ask God what can we do to serve Him? Tony has much to learn in this place he finds different but God has him here for a reason. Will Tony accept that he is more than just a good swimmer? Can he see the beauty in things that others find ugly or different? The story is very good and made me take a look at myself. LikeTony, I have tried to please others. I didn't feel good about myself and was always wanting to do better, look better, be better. What I forgot, was God made me just the way He wanted me to be. I have gifts and I am loved by Him. Don't miss your chance to read this great story. " We value what we must work for-what we must wait for. That which comes too easily can disappear without regret." I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
Can you imagine what it would be like if everything you knew vanished in a second? Tony can. He has woken up in the middle of a frozen forest, in a place he’s never heard of, in what believes to be some kind of alternate universe. This confusing land is made up of a close community of people that seem like they are from hundreds of years ago. Their traditions and way of life are old fashioned, but their advanced technology lets him know that he has not actually gone back in time. As Tony discovers he can’t figure out where exactly he is, he also notices that he is starting to lose his ability to see colors, although sometimes they still break through. Especially when he looks in Bryn’s eyes. This intriguing world Chautona Havig has created through the eyes and experiences of her protagonist Tony will make you think, feel, and give you a childlike sense of wonder. She takes an extremely unique approach to dealing with struggles such as physical disabilities, suicide, and feelings of worthlessness. Can this collegiate athlete who has been directed by his father every day of his life etch out an existence among the Highlanders? Will he overcome his inability to accept disabilities? Is there anything special in him that he can offer to others, or was his father right about him only being a dumb jock without any ability other than to swim? These are all questions that will be answered as Tony is forced to face the idea that he may never go back to Los Angeles, or The Angels, as the Highlanders call it.
Tony is a guy who has been taught all his life to push, and shape his body into a well oiled machine. His dad's words keep playing over and over in his head. Pushing him to "be" better/ "do" better. Yet he never feels he's done enough. He is a swimmer trying to get into the Olympics when his life is dropped into "The Highlands." Well, he wakes up one morning in a strange and sort of backwards place. He struggles with not knowing what has happened and wanting to go back to LA, but not knowing how to do that. He has to come to grips with the knowledge that he will never go back and accept his new life. There are many twists and turns in this story. But all along the way Tony has a friend Bryn who helps him learn to adjust. She helps him see other's imperfection as acceptable, yet Tony helps the community to see that some of these can be corrected to a point. Chautona also brought in a side of life when some people can't accept their "imperfections" and they hid their pain from everyone until it's too late. The book shows us how we need to encourage them to share their pain, to ask for prayer so they can find out how God wants to use them. It's a story of learning to be content, to embrace the life God gives us. Then there will be beauty to see all around us. In this book by Chautona Havig I found some very difficult questions. Could I accept imperfections in myself or others and know that God sees them as a "Gift?" I HOPE SO!
God's guidance is ever present in this book, the second in the author's "Journey of Dreams" series. Beautifully written with a different cadence from the first book as the narrator is a young man. Being content is important in this story. Can't wait for the next book in the series.
Quite interesting and different from anything I have read before. It turned out to be a lovely story of a young man,Tony, and his search of self.
We don't always have the answers. We don't always know why. Tony didn't know how he landed up in Highlands. But while there, he learned about what really matters in your life. He became the man GOD wanted him to be.
Tony didn't always agree with the residents of Highlands. But the beauty of the story is how they united in their differences. They taught each other. They were respectful and kind. This is rare in today's world. You can agree to disagree. You can learn from each other. You can accept differences without being vindictative.
I enjoyed the story. I loved the people of Highlands. I loved the support and love they gave each other. It was a joy to read.
I received this free to review.
