Listening to the voices in my head. Putting them down on paper and giving you a piece of my mind.Writing is an escape. there is a little piece of me in every charcter i create and in every moment.
Charlie Montgomery kept the birth of his daughter a secret from Reece Morgan in order to bring down a ruthless terrorist cell, but now that their child’s life is in jeopardy she needs his help to protect her. She knows she’ll face Reece’s wrath for her betrayal but keeping their daughter safe is her first priority.
Covert Existence, a romantic suspense by M. O. Kenyan, has an intriguing plot. Charlie was the love of Reece’s life and all he wanted to do six years ago was to marry her. However, practically the day after his proposal she disappeared from his life. What he didn’t know was that Charlie, affectionately known as Lee by Reece, left him to join a Homeland Security task force to apprehend arms dealer and terrorist Alexander Corisi and his brother Dominic. While undercover in the Corisi organization Charlie discovers she is pregnant and hides the birth of her daughter from everyone except her father, a General for the Joint Chiefs, and best friend and partner on the DC police force, David. Now, six years later, her daughter is kidnapped by the Corisi clan and Charlie must go to Reece and his resources in the FBI to rescue her.
Because she had the resources of the FBI and Homeland Security at her disposal and could protect the child, I still didn’t understand why Charlie kept RJ’s existence from Reece. But I thoroughly enjoyed Covert Existence as a romantic suspense with its fast-paced action, spunky, headstrong heroine and devoted hero. Reece is so devoted to his feelings for Charlie he keeps her engagement ring in his nightstand and doesn’t even change the décor in their apartment over the six year period. When all was said and done, he was very forgiving and they lived happily ever after….as they were meant to be.
I don't usually read romantic suspense/action so I was sure after page one I wouldn't like it. Glad to say I was wrong. Reece was a great guy and even though Charlie's reasoning was threadbare, I liked her kick-a$$-and-take-names attitude. The book was a little graphic violence wise (those poor Corisi cousins!), but overall a good, quick read.
The stars are for the writing. The content made no sense to me. It is completely unbelievable that Reece would jump back into bed with Charlie 6 years after without any type of explanation. She basically told him, I left you because my career was more important than you and we are supposed to believe that he would have said oh that fine let’s pick up where we left off? Then the whole hiding Olivia’s identity like they are doing him a favor and he should be cool with it? How dare she give his kid to her parents just to protect her job? If she was that concerned about her cover she could have faked her death so he would concentrate on the kid and stop searching for her. The hea was just delusional. After all these lies and without any healing time he would still want to marry her? Right. By the way what’s the deal that she made with Alexandra?
Charlie had so many secrets but they were all connected to her doing her job. I’m glad Reece was able to forgive because he should know the sacrifices it takes to do a job like that especially a black woman trying to make a name and a way for herself out of the shadows of her father and boyfriend. After all was said and done Reece and Alexandra still loved Charlie, even though she told Alex she didn’t love him (I believe she had a little love for him).
I get frustrated when a writer focuses either on infidelity or murder or grievous bodily harm. That sense of romance suddenly gets obscured by these events. Now don’t get me cuddles to writers but these are not appetising but leave a stalemate taste. I know love conquers all but hey not in this love fest Bwwm stories. Most readers come out of hard life and a lovey dovey story cheers everyone up
Covert Existence had an interesting plot. It centers around the undercover assignment of tough-as-nails Charlie Montgomery, who works for Homeland Security. Her job was to bring down Alexander Corisi, who ran a criminal enterprise that included illegal drugs and trading nuclear weapons with terrorist cells.
There were several interesting twists to the story. First, we find out that Corisi is in love with Charlie, which complicates her assignment. She has to balance playing her part as the sexy accountant and fitting into the criminal world, while at the same time keeping Corisi at bay but not getting him upset. The second complication is when Charlie finds out that she’s pregnant.
The first few chapters of the story were a bit confusing. It was hard to get grounded in the scenes because I felt dropped in the middle of what was going on with little explanation. In fact, at first I didn’t realize one of the scenes was a flashback, which added to my confusion. The names also confused me. Charlie was called Lee in one scene, which initially caused me to think “Lee” was another character. Reece was alternately Reece or Morgan, and even their daughter was called by two different names.
I love secret baby plots, but in this case the heroine didn’t convince me that she had a good reason for what she did. Not only did she leave the hero without explanation, but she also kept their child a secret for years, and she didn’t tell him even when she needed his help to save their child.
Overall, I think it was a good book, and I liked the action. The author amped up the suspense with the kidnapping of the daughter and the competitive nature of the Corisi brothers. There’s gunfire, bombs, and a really cool scene where the hero has to save his daughter.
I received an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
3.75 stars. The plot of this romantic drama was intriguing. Reece Morgan a special operations Navy Seal loved and wanted to start a family with Charlie Montgomery who worked with Homeland Security. Charlie is ambitious and wants to make a name for herself equal to or greater than that of her boyfriend, Reese, or her father, Mr. Montgomery who was a member of the Joint Chiefs. She sneaks away from Reese the night she accepts his proposal in order to take a job with Homeland Security to bring down the Corisi family who are funding a terrorist cell. A month after leaving, she discovers that she is carrying Reece's child; but she doesn't tell him because she fears he will be angry. Six years past and their child is in danger and Reece is needed to help save the child; but she still does not tell him that he is the child father because he might get too angry. I was annoyed with this character and saw Charlie as ambitious, selfish, cowardly and cruel and the author was unable to create any events to redeem her. So, as a romance, this story was lost.
