Darren Brown spent two years running from his past, but he could only run so far before he was found.

Darren Brown lost the only two people he loved just days apart. His mother first, then his best friend. Guilt over his friend’s death drives Darren to wander for over a year before he winds up in the town of McKinton, Texas.

Lee Bausch served his tour in the Army then started his quest to find answers only one person could give him—except that one person had moved away. It takes him almost two years to find Darren Brown, and it turns out Darren doesn’t have the answers Lee needs—he is what Lee needs. Darren is shy and so sexy Lee can’t get enough of him, but he still needs answers because he can’t shake the feeling someone he loved was murdered.

After a terrifying experience at the motel, Darren knows he has to tell Lee about the spirits in McKinton. And there’s one spirit, scared and alone, who has the answers Lee seeks, if only the spirit knew how to tell Lee his suspicions are right.

A few things about me...

I am a married mom of four who spends most of the day writing, either on stories or at the blog. I love to write as much as I love to read. I am generally quiet and laid back, choosing to let things slide off me rather than stick and irritate me.

And it's really hard trying to think of descriptives for myself, so I'll just let y'all e-mail me or comment at the blog if there's something specific you'd like to know, and spare you from reading a boring bio:D

Stefan Bausch died suddenly, unexpectedly and with no reason or explanation. It was the darkest time of his best friend’s life. Darren left town before Stefan’s death and still lives with the belief that it was somehow his fault.

His journey to a new location and his attempt to begin a new life is not exactly going the way he planned. He is living in a home with an elderly woman, gathering eggs from some very uncooperative chickens to bring to Virginia, his boss at the local diner. Darren walks around with the feeling of dread, and paranoia that he is being observed.

Lee Bausch is a man on a mission. After over a year of chasing leads, begging for favors and lots of frustration, his hard work has paid off. He has found his brother's best friend. Did he have the answers to all of Lee’s questions? Did he know what really happened to his younger brother? After finally spotting Darren in the diner, he is taken by surprise when he finds himself not only attracted to him, but totally mesmerized by the fragile young man. Their meeting turns into an unexpected sexual frenzy that becomes the beginning of a love story.

Darren and Lee are complicated characters with so much baggage that it tends to confuse the story at times. The eclectic mix of secondary characters keep the momentum of the story going, but overall it is just that, a story. Darren's fragility, weakness and uncontrollable attraction to Lee make you wish you could take him home, feed him some chicken soup and prepare him better for the outside world. Although Lee’s feelings are genuine and mostly believable, I did feel that he was taking advantage of Darren’s naivety.

The ending is somewhat expected but at the same time a turn from the norm. This is an easy read and a interesting short story to pass some time and get into the mind of a spirit with something on his mind.

This one was good, not as good as some of the other ones.
it may have been a mood but I did have a couple of problems with this one.
The way she writes Darren that he is so scared and skittish that he is afraid of everyone and his past, and that his personalty/behavior changes the "minute" Lee shows up.. was too quick for me.

Also this is a firemen carry:

So how do you (the one being carried) "nip" the other in the butt??
Pinch, slap, grab, play with yes, but unless you are part "giraffe" you can't reach their ass to bite it.

I liked Darren and Lee grew on me, and we got hear about some of the past ones, and Connor was up to his tricks as usual, also Stefan was very lovable. I just wished there was more ghost time, and less sex time. The sex time(s) is not as much as some of her others ones, but I would have liked more base story line and ghosts.

I knew what I was getting here, I have only read one other in the series, but it's not essential. I think if Darren hadn't gone from terrified silent anxiety ridden mouse to sexually aggressive minx in about 36 seconds I might have liked this more. Once he meets Lee, whoa, he changes overnight. He's terrified to even speak to customers at the diner and within 3 minutes literally, Lee is sucking him off in the bosses office and screaming so everyone can hear him. WTF?

Anyway, there is the mystery of who killed Lee's brother which they solve pretty quickly once they focus on it and eh. Maybe if I was totally into the series? My favourite character is the ghost of Connor who is in the two books I've read. LOL

I have been anticipating Darren's story since he first appeared as the skittish new waiter in All of the Voices. While he's still skittish and comes with quite a bit of baggage, I was relieved that his past wasn't as bad as I was worried it was going to be. This made Aftermath a lighter read than I expected, but don’t despair because it's not without its own intensity.

Not to spoil the book for anyone, but I will readily admit that I was concerned that Darren was in McKinton because he was fleeing an abusive relationship. While he did indeed flee his hometown, he did so out of guilt and loss. Darren's best friend died two days after Darren's mother died. Because he had a boyfriend at the time, Darren felt as though he neglected Stefan and that Stefan wouldn't have died if he'd spent more time with him. As it turns out, Darren isn't the only one feeling guilty about Stefan's death and questioning if it was an accident or murder. Stefan's older brother Lee has been searching for Darren for more than a year in hopes of finding out more about his brother's final days. That Lee finds more than he was looking for when he catches up to Darren made Aftermath a lovely read for me – kind of a second chance romance for Darren now that Lee sees him for the man he’s become.

There were several things about this installment in the Southern Spirits series that I enjoyed immensely. While I was relieved to learn why Darren was in McKinton, I was glad to see those around him take a more active part in his life and that they were able to do so without him bolting. Not only did this give Darren people to call friends, but it also gave him the opportunity to stand up for himself when he felt they were being too pushy. I also enjoyed watching the relationship develop between Darren and Lee and how taken aback Lee was when he first saw Darren after the years that have passed. He saw Darren as the man, rather than fixating on the image of the boy he knew as his brother’s best friend. This definitely made for some steamy scenes between the two. As for the spirits, I absolutely adored Stefan and understood his antics better once we learned more about him. It also helped to explain why Darren felt so guilty about Stefan’s death and why Conner was protective of the young spirit. In fact, Conner’s antics in Aftermath were priceless and the sheet incident would make for heck of a scene in a movie. I quite enjoyed this installment and am looking forward to reading What Remains very soon.

4.5 Heart Review by Tammy

Two years ago Darren Brown lost both his mother and his best friend within days of each other, his mother from cancer and his best friend Stefan was murdered. Now, Darren lives in McKinton trying to hide from his best friend’s killer. He doesn’t know for sure if Stefan’s murderer is after him but he’s not taking any chances!

Lee Bausch left the marines after his brother Stefan died and his best friend Darren disappeared. Lee has spent the last two years travelling all over America looking for Darren to see if he can shed some light on Stefan’s death. When Lee finds Darren in the little town of McKinton he can’t believe his luck. Darren on the other hand just wants to hide from Lee because he can’t help but feel guilty about Stefan’s death and honestly doesn’t know what to say to Lee about it.

When Lee and Darren meet face to face after not seeing each other for many years the attraction is instant. Unbeknownst to Lee, McKinton is known for the spirits that “live” in town, almost everyone knows and doesn’t really care about them. They’re just glad their relatives are still with them, Darren has of course heard about the spirits and he knows all about Sheriff Stenley’s partner Severo and the fact that Severo can talk to spirits but what he doesn’t know is that all the times he felt like he was being watched was actually Stefan trying to get his attention. Both Lee and Darren freak when they discover that ghosts are real but they are so relieved that Stefan is still here that they ask Severo to ask him for help concerning his death.

It’s while they are working towards finding Stefan’s murderer that Lee and Darren find not only comfort with each other but love. Both Darren and Lee have a lot of accumulated guilt over Stefan’s death but as they live and love together they work through it and discover that most of it is very misplaced as no-one blames them but them!

Aftermath is yet another wonderful instalment in the Southern Spirits series Bailey Bradford. If you haven’t started the series you should!

Darren Brown is terrified and on edge although no one knows why. He's slowly finding his way back to normalcy when he gets the feeling that someone is watching him. He needs stability in his life, support, purpose; he needs to believe in something again. This story is about Daren's journey toward redemption and resolution.

Darren seems so lost that all the citizens of McKinton want to help him, but no one knows how and their attempts just seem to push Darren deeper into his shell. He's obviously nervous and afraid of something but won't confide in anyone. He gets hints about past issues, but is so self-absorbed that he is ignoring all the signs he's being given by Stefan's spirit. When Lee Baush comes to town, he's wary of him until Lee makes his intentions clear. Lee is trying to make sense of his life after the death of his youngest brother, Stefan. He's not convinced that it was a suicide. He's looking for answers and is convinced that Darren, who was Stefan's best friend, has them. He, however, wasn't counting on the sexual explosion that occurs between him and Darren.

I liked Lee and Darren, although after being apart for so long and not having been that close before, I was surprised that they became lovers so quickly. I was also amazed by the rapid transition in Darren's personality. Almost overnight, he changes from a shy, withdrawn, nervous boy to a confident, sexy young man. The change is so drastic that he felt like another person all together. Stefan, as a novice spirit, is adorable. Considering his mischievous nature, I would not have thought that Connor would have been a good influence, but was pleasantly surprised when Connor befriends Stefan and teaches him the ways of the spirit world. Their friendship does make me wonder though. In her next book, is Bailey planning on treating us to her vision of a romance spirit-style?

'Aftermath' is the fifth book in the Southern Spirits series and can be read alone, but will be much more enjoyable if read after the other four books in the series. I'd recommend it for anyone who likes mysteries, hot sexual encounters, and happy endings.

Finally, finally we get to hear the story of the waiter who just appeared and who everyone was concerned about!

Like so many of the other characters in this series Darren is running and hasn’t really stopped to take a breath for the last two years. Unlike most of the other characters however Darren is running from himself. He is laden down with guilt over the death of his best friend which came closely after he lost his mother. He hasn’t given himself time to grieve let alone come to the realisation that the guilt he has placed on himself is unfounded. His time drifting round the country has left him in some unsavoury situations and his nerves are about shot to pieces by the time he arrives him McKinton.

Lee Bausch came out of the army having to face the death of his little brother. Suspicious and unclear of the circumstances that surrounded Stefan’s death he sets off on a mission to find his brother’s old best friend to see if he can provide answers.

Darren and Lee are hit with the usual insta lust we have come to expect from this series. There is a mystery to solve but first Darren must explain to Lee about the ‘extra’ inhabitants of the small town of McKinton and hope the other man doesn’t see him as crazy.

I loved watching Darren gain confidence in himself as he leaned on Lee. Underneath all the nerves was a fierce young man who needed human touch and compassion more than anything else. Lee was able to reach out in a way none of the residents of the town had been able. Lee had only dreamed of settling down and suddenly he can see those dreams as a possibility if he if he is brave enough to take the chance. This was a lovely addition to the series and we got Stefan out of it who is such a gentle soul – literally!

Darren made his appearance as a new waiter in Virginia's cafe. He was extremely skittish and avoided eye contact with pretty much everyone. It's obvious he is on the run, but from what?! In Aftermath we learn his story, and boy, is it a good one. I loved how Darren grew in his self-confidence, once he realised that he actually had people he could call friends, and was helped by Lee. The relationship between these two is hot and romantic.

The other part that I loved about this book is that Connor, our long-term friendly (pesky) spirit, makes a new friend in Stefan. I absolutely adored this side story!

Laine and Severo are the main supporting characters in this book, although Zeke does get a quick mention.

So very well-written, with a smooth storyline and pace. There were no grammatical errors that I found, although as I was completely entranced by this story, I might not have noticed them.

This series is absolutely fantastic and I am thoroughly enjoying every book. I can wholeheartedly recommend both this book and the series as a whole.

Okay I now have a new favorite character in this series and it is Ian.

The way he came into town looking for Darren and was so protective of him from the start. You could definitely feel the sparks between these two. Ian is looking for Darren so he can find out what happened to his brother and when you do find out it was so sad what happened to Stefan. Darren's character I liked a lot too. He was sweet but caring and the beginning reserved because he was so afraid of being hurt.

Together they try to find out what happened with a little help from beyond. As the time goes on they grow closer together and there is steam in this book also. You also get to see a lot of the characters from past books which I loved! Have to say I love Connor the ghost too in this series. All the pranks he plays are just too funny.

All together I loved this book!

I would definitely recommend this book!

Darren's running from his past trying to live with the guilt from believing his best friend Stefan's death was his fault. He's scared and skittish, so despite Severo and Laine's attempts to befriend him he keeps to himself and avoids getting close to people so he won't let them down, like he believes he did Stefan. Enter Lee, Stefan's brother, who's looking for answers about his brother's death. When Lee find Darren sparks fly, and with some help from our friendly spirits Lee ends up staying at Darren's place. With Severo's help they end up finding the person responsible for Stefan's death and along the way fall in love.
While I like both Darren and Lee, I have to say that I loved the small parts with Stefan and Connor, and actually wished for more ghost time in the book. Connor was his usual playful self and I couldn't help but love Stefan. It made me wish for a story about Stefan as a ghost.

Aftermath by Bailey Bradford
M/M
4 1/2 stars

I was given this book by Inked Rainbow Reads for an honest review.

I loved this book, all the books in the series have been good but something about this story just got to me. I love the rooster that's been in the last couple books, just adds some humor to the story.

Darren was lost emotionally but Virginia took him under her wing and looked out for him. Lee came to town looking for Darren he was Stefan's brother who was Darren's friend.

I thought Darren and Lee falling for each other was sweet. They made a perfect couple and fight well with each other. I love how they worked together to find what happened to Stefan.

The ending was fantastic, just like all the books so far the story gets wrapped up beautifully. Such a wonderful series, I definitely recommend it.

Guilt over his friend’s death drives Darren Brown to wander alone for over a year until the spirits of McKinton, Texas help ensure he is found in this captivating paranormal romance. It seems that the Southern Spirits of McKinton, Texas are bound and determined to win my heart with each and every delightful story and Darren and Lee’s did just that so I can’t wait to read the next one. Note: while this story can be read as stand alone, others in the series are better read in sequence.
