I brought this book because the cover captured my artistic eye; I felt an urge of certainty that even if the story was terrible, it would look amazing on my bookshelf. However, I wanted to hold the book and turn its pages to discover whether or not the story matched the wondrous cover.

Luckily my instincts proved to be correct. The story is fantastic! Three words describe this novel: funny, thrilling and entertaining. The story fills you with a typical sense of envy when Luke's brother becomes a superhero. Only they do not know what powers he possesses. The references to marvel and DC superheroes and Star Wars are brilliant, creating a real sense of a new superhero amongst the many that exist already. I love David Solomon's humour towards a typical superhero story.

So far any lady reading this (unless an avid fan of superheroes) has switched off the moment superheroes are mentioned. Clever writing from David Solomon has created a novel that clinches hold of all readers. This is due to, the family connection and love for one another throughout the story and a very intuitive girl named Lara.

I would recommend this book to all for the reason that, it captures life's most important features: love, friendship, togetherness, support and the ability to create the feeling of belief when things are at there worst! I cannot wait for another novel from David Solomon!

This is a deserved winner of the Waterstones Book Prize for middle grade readers. It's great for all ages in fact, especially those of us nerds who love superheroes, supervillains and Star Wars as there are a plethora of references throughout. And, there is humour on every page.

Comic book fanatic Luke goes for a wee and misses the chance to be endowed with superpowers to save two universes. Yes, two universes. And to make matters worse, his nerdy goody-two-shoes and never-read-a-comic in his life older brother, Zack, gets the honour. Luke is gutted! He's then on a mission to make sure Zack becomes a proper cape and is in fit shape to foil Nemesis. Luke's friends Serge and Lara Lee are wonderful characters and their enthusiasm in helping Luke is entertaining and often funny.

What follows is a great story about family, friendships and sibling rivalry... and superpowers. Despite their bickering and differences the brothers are loyal when the going gets tough, especially when a cataclysmic event is on the horizon.

I don't think I've ever laughed so much while reading a middle grade book because it's so easy to relate to these characters. And of course I'm many, many light years away from the reading demographic it's aimed at. I'll be looking out for more from this author in future and I'll be recommending this one, a lot.

Loved it!

I picked this up with a couple of reluctant readers in mind, thinking it would be one of those books that while personally, I didn't really enjoy, would be great for them. How wrong was I?

Sharp humour, comic plot devices stand-ups would be proud of, great characterisation, and references to comics and TV from my childhood made this a really enjoyable read.

Luke is a massive comic book fan and dreams of being a Superhero. While he nips out of the tree house for a wee, his studious, maths loving brother, Zack, is given superpowers instead, as Nemesis is coming and two worlds need saving. How unfair!

Zack knows nothing about Superheroes or how to be one, so Luke sets out to train him, making him a sigil from one of mum's brooches and a cape using the curtain from the downstairs loo.

As Lara (Luke's not-girlfriend-friend) hunts to discover the identity of Bromley's real life superhero, Luke does everything in his notsuperpower to stop her.

And when Zack is kidnapped while his powers are down, it turns to Luke and his friends to save him, and the world.

Looking forward to getting this onto my bookshelf.

Great for fans of Tom Gates, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, action, humour and Superheroes.

LOVED IT!!

I think this will be as much a fun for adults as children.

Great Cover and illustrations by Laura Ellen Anderson.

There is some great dialogue. Here are a few of my faves:
“”the first rule of a superhero: you can’t go round using your powers for vegetable preparation”
“One does not simply walk into a heavily fortified secret volcano headquarters “

Loved the main characters: Luke Parker is a great character and whilst making some flawed decisions is well meaning and a person that has many positive traits
As for Zack … I think a lot of people will relate to their relationship and I like how the story brought them closer.
I also liked the alliterative name of Lara Lee, which is typical of old comics – Lois Lane, Peter Parker, Bruce Banner etc.
And Serge…great comic relief and a very memorable character 

I also recognized several geeky references including ZARDOZ – yes the john borman sci flick based of THE WIZARD OF OZ with sean connery with a pony tale and a red nappy!
I’m sure no kid will get this or even some adults but I’m glad its there 

I hope someone picks up the film rights to this. Would be a brilliant British family film 

This has been on my TBR pile for ages and I kept putting it off as there were always other books that appealed to me more. I don't know what I was expecting but I loved this book! (Wish I'd picked it up sooner) VERY funny (without being silly) and an exciting plot that keeps you hooked. This book would be perfect for any 9ish plus comic book/superhero fans: I can think of several I shall be thrusting it upon! I need to look up David Solomons' other books.

Turns out I’m a sucker for a good opening line and “My brother is a superhero and I could have been one too, except I needed a wee,” is a pretty great one. The rest of the book was a little uneven as broad comedies aimed at 11 year olds are apt to be. This was like a novel-length version of Whizzer & Chips with some superhero shtick thrown in. Harmless.

FANTASTISCH!

I really enjoyed this book. Not the sort of book I would normally pick up but it is full of fun references and the character of Serge is pure brilliance. In fact, the main trio are funny and a joy to read about. Lots of fun and full of adventure.

It is a very rare thing for me to finish a book and know that I need to read the sequel. I often want to read further. This book was just so good that it becomes a necessity to read the next chapter.

It is a superhero story. One where the superhero is not the main character. This is a really interesting dynamic especially as you stay with the brother of the superhero throughout.

The book is funny, sweet (but not sickly), it has character relations that are rarely seen and it also has a plot that never falls into cliché. I highly recommend this for children of all ages and all genders.

I read this with my son a chapter at a time as bedtime stories. He loved it and would beg for additional chapters almost every night (excellent behavior modification reward). I thought some of the tropes were a little old, and some of the plot twists obvious, but this is a middle grade novel and I've been an avid reading grownup for *mumblemumble* years. It's a very nice book for the audience it's aimed at.

One star for a great idea and one more for the part that made me laugh out loud. Otherwise this book is soooooo disappointing. I had to wait two weeks for this book at the library and it so wasn't worth it at ALL. The main characters are super annoying and whiny, the writing wasn't very well done, and I just didn't find it likeable. AND THERE ARE MORE!!! I think one is enough, especially the way the first one ended. This would have made such a perfect stand-alone.

Solomons, David My Brother is a Superhero, 290 pgs. Penguin Random House, 2015. $16.99. Language: PG (1 swear, 0 Fs); Mature Content: G; Violence: PG.

11-year-old Luke knows everything about superheros. He has a great collection of comic books, went to Super Hero camp, and wants to be one more than anything else in the world. Then his older brother Zach got turned into a super hero by a random visit of an alien spaceship while Luke was in the bathroom! It should have been him! But it wasn’t, and now Luke is angry. Besides, Zach won’t even wear the cool “Star Guy” costume Luke made him. Sure, he’s fighting crime and everything, but he is supposed to defeat Nemesis, and they don’t even know who she is. But when Star Guy gets in real trouble, Luke (and Lara and Serge) might be his only chance for help.

This is a great story! The set up is fantastic, and the writing is great - action packed; a real page turner. The cover is even terrific. The girl character is smart and funny, too. This will fly off the middle school library shelves, and even the older elementary students will love it.

This was such a fun book. I love superheroes and it's clear that the author loves them, too. He packs a lot of references and comic book knowledge into the story, but does it in a natural way. It's cleverly written, the narrator has a great voice and sense of humor, the actual super powers are cool and make sense, and the climax is engaging and exciting.

What I especially loved about this book was that it was the non-powered ones who eventually saved the day. Everyone can relate to wanting to be a superhero, but it's so nice that it was the knowledge and abilities of the non-powered characters that ultimately triumphed. I think the author did well on the age ranges, too. The younger kids and the older brother were all done well and felt genuine. The adults felt a little ridiculous at times, but I guess since this is from a child's perspective, I can go with it. And I liked the relationship between the two brothers.

I would argue that girls can enjoy this book just as much as boys. Sure this is clearly aimed at boys, but Lara was a fun character in her own right and she helps out a lot in the story. And I think a reader can have fun with this even if they aren't big into comics or superheroes. It's just a really enjoyable story.

I freaking (accidentally) loved this book - 5*

Okay, I bought this for my class to read as one of them loves superheroes. (Proud!) I didn't mean to read it. Honestly, I didn't. I accidentally forgot my Kindle yesterday and I couldn't travel to York without a book so I just picked it up...

I nearly missed my goddamn stop over this bus. I was so absorbed, I nearly arrived in Manchester. Now that would have been a disaster.

This book is hilarious and I laughed out loud way too much and I'm not ashamed to say that I will continue to read the rest of this series for my own personal use because this was awesome. I loved Lara and Luke.

This book is seriously clever as it treads the balance between appealing to just children or just adults and honestly it works perfectly. It has the style of Percy Jackson and that's probably why I'm so in love with it. Yes!!!!!Q

This is on our Sunshine State Young Reader List for 3-5 grades and it is hilarious. It's about a boy named Luke who is crazy about super hero comics. He's in the treehouse with his brother Zach (who is a do-gooder) and he has to go to the bathroom. While he's gone, Zach has a visit from an outer space being who gives him super powers. Luke is at once eaten up with jealousy and trying to help Zach with his super powers. It turns out Zach has been tasked with dealing the Nemesis, which he doesn't even know who that is. What's great about this one is the language-the figurative language made me laugh out loud. Also, one of the characters misuses language in a completely hilarious way. I can't wait to share this one with the kids.

What happens when you are a hopeless comic geek and your dull, uncommunicative, math-nerd older brother suddenly gets superpowers?

It's the story of an eleven-year-old whose whole life changes when somebody else has to save the world. Although he's technically on the periphery, our hero will have to learn to:
1) talk to girls
2) take responsibility for his own life
3) communicate with his older brother
4)keep secrets
5)face impending death with a cool head
6)overcome the world's most deserved case of sheer jealousy
7)track a supervillain to his volcano lair, infiltrate, and achieve his mission to make it possible for somebody else to Save Us All.

Spunky, funny, and pleasant.
I'll read the sequel!
