Donovan arrives at the gates of Haven to learn to control his magic. A heinous symbol carved into his chest and no memory of who he is. He soon realizes that his magic is different than his classmates. Will he discover the nature of his magic and heritage before his past catches up to him?
A young boy with no memory and a strange mark inscribed on his chest arrives at the gates of magic college. He is tested and found to have some unusual skills but only modest talent in magic. Over the course of the book he tries to find out about his past, his heritage and his troublesome magic powers. There are hints throughout the book of prophecy and a larger plot arc but little detail in this first novel of the series.
So, standard fair in terms of plot but for a fan of 'magic school' novels like me it was a lot of fun. This is not a novel with cleverly intertwined plot arcs and there is no awe inspiring world-building either. I barely noticed the lack because the book doesn't try to do either. It is light reading that follows a well-trodden formula but it's well written and it's good. Really enjoyable.
As a bonus, Book 2 in the series isn't three years away and is actually due early October. Already on my wishlist.
I have preordered the next book. I can't wait till October 5th. I want to know what happens next. Where is he going to go?? And what about his past? There are so many questions and I like it.
Donovan the MC has no memory of his past, some kind of magic symbol carved into his chest, can understand almost all languages and he's thrust into a school environment ala Harry Potter.
