A harrowing murder… Reinstated in Detroit's 12th Precinct, Homicide Detective Maxine Jonas has learned to play by the rules by the time winter bears down on Motor City exactly one year after the brassy investigator narrowly escaped death on a case that cut too close to home.
She's back to the beat and working it from a whole new angle, while living with the brawny firefighter who's too sweet or too blind to let her go, and finding time to assimilate from a unique disorder that riveted her this time last year, though her therapist rubs her the wrong way every time they meet. It would seem the rhythm of life is upbeat and Max couldn't miss a step if she tried, but things aren't always what they seem.
When the body of a six-year old boy is found washed up on the shore of the Detroit River one rainy morning and Max gets called to investigate, she's suddenly launched into a case that proves more perplexing than any she's been assigned. The clues don't add up, the city's on edge, and the political powers that be are bearing down. The victim is no ordinary child, but the son of a Senator and the man appears more concerned with avoiding a scandal than bringing his son's killer to justice.
The Senator, her Lieutenant, and even the news media are dogging her every step, conspiring against her to cover up the crime of the century and destroy her reputation in the process. Maxine must get back to her dirty roots if she's going to solve this murder. But there's just one problem, the closer she gets to the truth the closer she feels to the killer, and the darkness inside her is getting ready to come out and play.
Great book, kept me wondering what was going to happen. The character emotions are written. I just wish I could read the rest of the books. When I went back to buy them, they were no longer available. Very disappointing. I hope the Author re-releases them again someday.
