This is Xarissa Silverstone writing to you. Hanlowa and I have decided that I should be the one to write the summaries on the back of the books from now on. We had a nasty incident with the publishers involving shadow beasts and pie. That is a story for another day. The story you are about to read is where I get put into a coma by a demonic poison. Now my mind is trapped in the Dream Sphere, and even if I wake up, my dream powers will change forever. Meanwhile in Centerville we have Wiccans running for office, people playing with Ouija boards, a visit from the Angel of Death, and the true story of Genesis is told. On top of everything else Hanlowa has a question for me. If she actually gets around to asking it, the answer I give could change not only Centerville, but the entire world as well.

The Silver Codex II, while not as action or supernatural event filled as the first volume, hints at greater things to come within this book. Some questions are answered with even bigger ones being raised. Characters introduced to us in the first volume continue to make important decisions that affect their powers and how they interact with the people around them. Overall, the second volume feels like (and I suspect is) a transition novel between the second and third volumes, and sets the stage for big things to happen in the next book.

More than just being a transition, though, this volume has a strong message of forgiveness and dealing with the people who have hurt you in the past, especially with the character dynamic between Xarissa and her ex-bully. Redemption is also a theme that is touched upon for some characters, and I suspect that this theme will be making a greater appearance later on in the series.

I did enjoy the interesting twists that the author had on some classical subjects, such as the Adam and Eve story and interactions between the various Muses. I also personally like most of the conversations between the characters, as they felt like that actually served a purpose for the overall plot and character development as opposed to just being space fillers.

That being said, The Silver Codex II still has grammar errors, which the author appears to be aware of and even pokes fun at this fact. Additionally, minority groups of all sorts (race, religion, and more) still play a major role in this series, so if you weren’t a fan of that in the last book you may not enjoy it here either.

As with the first volume, this book does cover a few subjects and has some scary/violent scenes that may not be suitable for children, so I would recommend this book for teens or older. If you also haven’t read the first book, you’ll want to do that first in order to understand what is going on both in the town and in the interactions between characters, as this volume does not re-hash what happened previously.
