Unpopular Opinion Time

Well this was certainly a lesson in awkwardness. The writing was very stilted and weird, and the plot itself was a little silly. The book felt more like an outline of a draft than a finished story.

The world building didn't work well either, I actually had to double check that this book was the first in the series, since the way everything was described so generically made it seem like a book in the middle of the series with only a quick brush up of past books.

It was so odd that huge events were just mentioned casually in one sentence and never explained in any detail. Nothing was believable and the characters felt flat to me. Unfortunately I can't really think of anything good to say about this book, it read like a tenth grade writing assignment. 1.5/5

With Earth in ruins and the planet dying after a war that has lasted for more than a hundred years on the planet magical creatures of all kinds are trying to rebuild and replenish Earth. There is still a small resistance of humans that fight against magic being on their planet even though the human population is down to a small percentage of what it once had been and in danger of extinction.

Tulupea's mother is the Queen of the Fae realm and had been on Earth trying to use her healing powers to rebuild the planet. She has come up with a plan along with an Earth scientist to create a superior race breeding a human and a fae through scientific methods. Tulupea of course wants to meet the human she is being volunteered to breed children with and soon finds herself falling for the strange human and fiercely wanting to protect him and the planet Earth.

Arranged got off to a somewhat slow start for me building up the setting, characters and world but once the story got going on Earth I was completely hooked on where the journey would take me. Being the first book in a series you are introduced to this dystopian setting and a small portion of the magic and creatures still left on the planet which had me quite intrigued with where it could all go.

Tulupea was a bit of a spoiled brat type of character in the beginning which may be a bit of a turn off for some. She is what she is though, a princess that has not known anything other than her world of comfort and quite headstrong as she has been raised to someday rule. I thought the author portrayed her just how she really should be and became quite fond of her. Michael is also an interesting character as he is going against what he had been taught to believe and showing compassion for those he would have been fighting against.

Overall, great start to the series with a bit of a cliffhanger ending that had me wanting to continue on reading.

(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free for an honest review. Thanks to NetGalley, Valknut Press and Julia Crane.)

I really enjoyed this book, it was fun and interesting, characters as well. However the fae here for sure were different from the fae that I knew of. Usually they are really wise and cold-hearted, here they were not so, but I liked them.

The Queen acted like a queen, but I did not like her attitude toward the babies.

I really liked Tulupea and Michael, and cannot wait to see more of them.
Even though book ended kind of abruptly it was a fun and fast read.

Things kick off with a bang with this story. You have a dying earth and magickal beings that want to fix the damage they were responsible for. Tulupea is a spoiled princess and doesn't like the fact she has to leave her cushy life when she is summoned by her mom, the queen. When she arrives she isn't sure what she is being told is the best thing until she meets Michael. Everything is a mystery even when small tidbits are being revealed slowly. Julia Crane did an amazing job bringing this story to life and keeping me wanting more.

A very quick read, (read in under an hour) with a good story line. However I did feel it was a little rushed, a bit more on the world building would have been nice. Over all it ticked all the boxes for a novella. Action, heartbreak, love, fantasy and has me looking forward to book 2.

4.5 stars!

I've read quite a few of this author's other books, but because I don't really read anthologies that much, I was unaware of this story from her! This novella used to be a short story in an anthology, which is obviously why I hadn't read it lol! The author has now released it as the first novella in a trilogy, and I was offered a copy for review! The synopsis for this novella is very vague, but very intriguing, and the cover is stunning too, so I said yes to a review copy! I couldn't wait to start it! I loved this novella! It was about faeries, which the cover gives you a big hint about lol! The plot was about a war between faeries and other magical creatures against humans, and the story followed an important girl as she got her first glimpse and adjusted to her new life on a ruined world! The story was also about the faeries making earth return to its natural state after being destroyed by war! I loved the plot! It developed at a really good pace and it had some unexpected storylines in it! I did read it in one sitting and I enjoyed it! I loved the hint of romance in it too, and I really hope that the romance increases in the next novellas! The characters were also amazing! Tulupea was the main character, and she was the only daughter of the queen of the faery realm, so she had a lot of responsibility coming to her! Tulupea went through a lot of change in this book, but she handled it all very well! She was transported to a world that had crumbled and was ruined because of war and she was also told that she had to continue on her family's legacy! This made me feel really sorry for Tulupea because she did what she was told so that she didn't let her mother down! I just really loved her, and she was such a nice character! Michael was the love interest of Tulupea, and he was also mated to her as well! Well, he was mated, but in a different way to what both he and Tulupea expected lol! Michael was supposed to be on the bad side with the humans in this novella, but he was actually on the faery side because he was friends with some magical creatures! I really liked Michael! He was protective of Tulupea and I could see his feelings develop for her as the plot progressed! He was also very cute with her and he was slightly hot too lol! This novella was only written from Tulupea's point of view, which I could understand, but I would have loved to have gotten inside Michael's head too! I hope that maybe some of the next two novellas will have some of his point of view in them! I can't wait to read the next novella in this trilogy! This novella really surprised me and it was different to other novella series' that I've read! I can't wait to find out what's going to happen next, even though this novella wasn't left at a huge cliff-hanger or anything! The cover for this novella is absolutely stunning! It definitely suits the story behind it and the model on the front is the perfect Tulupea! I love it! Big thank you to Julia for a copy of Arranged for review!

I was given this ARC by NetGalley in return for an honest review.

I was hopeful, oh so hopeful for a cute, shorter fantasy novella series that included faeries; unfortunately, I am not sure what exactly I read.

The point I really want to stress is the fact that an author should not omit or skip vital parts of a story in order to keep it short, especially in the fantasy genre.

The characters were awkward, felt out of place and separate from the story.

The main character, full of herself and entitled, has no clue how to act responsibly or even act at all with even the slightest hint of common sense, which caused numerous rounds of eye-rolling, head scratching and head shaking because of the sheer absurdity of this character.

The dialogue between the main character and her mother was painful to witness and even made me uncomfortable. The romantic interest created feels rushed, unnatural and a sad excuse for the characters to give in to their teenage biological urges.

The plot was what had me sign up for this novella in the first place, but I must warn other readers that not much fantasy development will happen in the 120 pages of this mess of a novella.

Important details are being skipped, barely mentioned in passing or only hinted at, which could have made this story so much more engaging and beautiful.

The writing also had much left to desire. As I mentioned above the dialogue is awkward at best. Grammatical errors were found throughout the novella, such as “would of” instead of “would have”, as well as annoying repetitions of catch words.

Overall, I am sadly getting frustrated in finding good stories to read these days.

I was very excited to potentially having found a new series to follow, unfortunately that excitement came too soon. I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone looking for a fantasy story.

It started a little slow and although I empathized with Tulupea, part of why it felt slow was because she rubbed me the wrong way. I wanted to get past the part where she bemoaned her fate and potential loss of status. When you have the potential to save a race without it costing you your life or your family, then by all means stop whining. Mind you, I did understand it would impact her life, but in the grand scheme of things, don't be the spoiled princess and just step UP. I'm glad to say that when she did actually go to Earth, her reality became so much more real and her attitude changed, especially after meeting Michael. By the end of the book, I really started to like her and give her credit for not fully accepting the status quo, but still trying to do the right thing for everyone without fully sacrificing herself.

As for Michael...I really liked him. He was supposed to be the enemy, but unlike his family and fellow rebels, he understood that not everything was black and white. That not all magical people were bad and that fighting just to fight wasn't helping humans survive. His own father was a prime example of a human who was as bad as some of the magical beings they fought against. He didn't want to betray his own race, but he also didn't want to see them and the planet destroyed. If that meant he had to go against ingrained beliefs and work with the faeries, then he would do so.

They both had their struggles with what the Queen was asking of them, and there were prejudices on both sides, but they were also attracted to each other which helped with easing some of their confusion and concerns on if they were doing the right thing. Not that that doesn't coming with its own issues. A human and a faerie?

If you like paranormal YA books, this is shaping up to be an interesting read and I cannot wait for book 2.

DNF at 35%

I always feel bad when I don't finish a book, so I tried and I tried to keep reading this one, but I really couldn't push myself to read something I wasn't enjoying at all. I don't know if this book gets better in the end, but surely the beginning didn't impress me at all, and I didn't enjoy it even a little bit.

The main problem I had with this book was with the writing style. The way it's written is really plain and shallow. In my opinion, there are too much speaking and too little description/world-building, and all those "telepathic dialogues" seemed to be put here and there just to fill up the pages.
Also, I really hated the characters. The main female protagonist was really childish and immature and the fact that I couldn't connect with her even a little bit was probably the main reason I couldn't keep reading this story, because I didn't care about her at al.

The plot, then, was really predictable and I couldn't find any original point in the whole concept that could have maybe earned this book a star more.

In the end, this book wasn't really my cup of tea, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, except maybe a 14/15 girl, since this writing style may be enjoyed by a younger reader.

Cleaning Up After The Magic Wars

This series must be read in order. This is the first book. I can't wait to read Betrayed!

Tulupea is an actual faery princess. It's not as glamorous as you might think. She must always do what her mother ,the Queen, says... No matter what she thinks or feels on her own. It is her duty. Now she must leave her world and her boyfriend because the Queen says it will be so. Bringing magic to Earth created a century long war that has left the planet devastated and now it is their job to fix it. Her mother has even picked a human mate for her. How will she be able to live with all of her mother's decisions? Is her mother even right? Or will her plans cause more catastrophes instead of helping to heal Mother Earth? She will do her duty.... But will she be able to keep silent about her misgivings? Should she? Or should she voice her fears and be true to her heart and being?

***This series is suitable for mature young adult through adult readers who enjoy apocalytal postapocalytal futuristic fantasy with some sci-fi elements along with all the suspense, thrills, mystery and drama with a dash of romance and a smidge of horror :)

This was a VERY solid start to the trilogy!

Mother Earth has been ravaged from the long war on magick by humans. Now, with only 13% of the human population left and Earth slowly dying, the Queen of the dark fae considers the almost unthinkable to try to save it. She wants her daughter, Tulupea, to mate with a human so that their halfling children can help repair the Earth. It wouldn't be a true mating as that would tarnish the princess, but a splicing of genes. Of course, Tulupea then meets Michael, the human donor, and actually begins to have feelings for him and a hard time detaching from the lab grown children.

A fairly short novella that quickly grabs your attention and leaves you wanting more. While there's still plenty of story remaining, the stopping point for this installment isn't necessarily a cliffhanger, but it does leave the door open for a lot more.

I read Arranged when it was part of an anthology and I'm so glad Julia Crane added content and published this as book 1 in a series!!! Julia Crane does a great job creating believable worlds and unique characters.
Tulupea is fae. At her mom's summons, she leaves her world and everything she's known as daughter to the queen. She travels to Earth, to help her mom save the planet from the ravages of war. Michael is human, doing his best to protect his family, his home and his way of life. Growing up, he watched as people have died and the Earth has been distroyed by various magickal creatures. Can two people from two different worlds, with very different backgrounds and very different views come together to save the the world ? Can a budding friendship outgrow childhood hatred and years of distrust?

I can't wait to book two!

I originally read this when it was a short story in an anthology collection. I immediately went and told her we were gonna need more Tulupea and Michael, boy did she deliver! This story is a fantasy tale with dystopia and sci-fi mingled in. I loved the characters and how they reeled me in to their web, welcoming me. You're immediately sucked into this dying Earth knowing that it will take magick and miracles galore to restore it's once immense beauty. But with those who do not wish for their help fighting against them, there is plenty of tensions and betrayal. The world Miss Crane wove is one of nature and love but also a future unlike anything either races ever imagined. I am so excited to see where she takes us in the next book, Betrayed.

Okay, so I have to admit that reading and finishing this book is hard for me from the beginning up to the end of this book. I didn't feel myself engrossed with it. I do liked the characters and the plot, but I can't help but think how this novella lacks so much details that makes me confused in some chapters. Although the cover is very stunning, it can't compensate on how disappointed I am with this novella. The story has a very vague start from where and how the war specifically lead to extinction of the the human race and how the earth was destroyed in return. It feels like something is missing for me after I read this novella.

Wow - I just love love love the way that Julia Crane writes!!! And I am so excited that she extended the original short story version of Arranged!!!

This story is about a fairy princess - Tulupea - who's mother has arranged for Tulupea and Michael to help replenish the population of the dying Earth. As much as I want to say more - - I just can NOT!!! I don't write spoilers - and believe me, in a short story that is still this short, it is hard to tell you much without giving away the whole story. BUT - believe me when I say that once you start reading this story, you will not be able to stop until you finish!!!

In order to destroy the magic that is suddenly thrust upon them, humans have brought the Earth to the brink of total destruction. Tulupea is a fairy princess and her mother calls her to Earth to help heal the planet. Of the few humans that are left on the planet, Michael is the only one that the queen has found that is willing to try and help to find a way to save Earth and the few humans that are left. Unfortunately, Michael's family doesn't feel the same way and would like nothing more than to destroy the queen and Tulupea. Wow, fairies, dragons, magic, and magical creatues, this is a fantastic book!

I never read the original short story, but this book is awesome. Julia Crane is amazing at creating a whole universe that is not only believable, but makes you want to fall into the book and become a part of it.
My only qualm was the inconsistency of Tulupea's charater; one moment she is very wise and her mother admires her intelligence, and at other times she's an abrasive teenager that acts way too compulsively. Beyond that though, I'm looking forward to seeing where book two will take us, and whether Tulupea is right to be worried about the new challenges the halflings will create.

A remarkable story of a fairy destined to give life in rescue of Earth after catastrophic wars between magic and humans decimate it! It is also the story of acceptance between two young adults who are the centerpiece of this renewal and their journey to help each other understand what this means. I enjoyed the descriptions of the desolate landscape of Earth and the beauty of the fairy realm immensely and the characters are definitely unique. This is a great beginning to a series I hope to read more of!

Thank you to the Author/Publisher for my copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

I'm not going to lie this book was so weird, fairy/human DNA-slicing and all that jazz... it was that weird that I really liked it.

I had never heard of Julia Crane before and once I had read the plot in the book it captured my attention because it was so weird. The book was a really quick read, I finished it in a couple of hours if that but I actually bought the second book straight away on my kindle after finishing first because I had to know what the hell was happening!

The book starts with you meeting TuLupea a young fairy princess who's perfect life gets turned upside down because she gets caught up in worlds that have been affected by magic. Tulupea's mother the Queen orders her to come meet her on Earth where she has picked a suitable human mate for her to make some hybrid human fairy concoction that will help restore Earth to its natural self, magic can fix what magic broke right?! Only it is completely frowned upon that a fairy should mate with a mere mortal (shock horror) and this causes doubts in Tulupea's mind if her mother is making the right choices but she would never dare disobey her, only her mother has plans for the mating... slicing up both their DNA's with some mad Dr. Emmett Brown character sounding guy (Back to the future for you guys who don't know). You then get to meet Michael our special human that seems dubious about the whole situation ( who wouldn't be to be honest). I like how Tulupea went from hating the whole idea, hating humans, to slowly progressing into the friendship/relationship.

My favourite was Blake, what's not to like?! Hot blonde guy that's so cheeky plus he turns into a dragon? Yup that's for me!

The book is written a little rough but I would recommend it, especially if you love a quick YA read, I enjoyed it and moved straight onto the second one.

Check out my blog please! www.amandaminnockx.tumblr.com thanks :)

Magick’s been restored on earth but it comes at a crippling price. With the planet on the brink of destruction, an unlikely pair must work together to try to bridge together a lifetime of hatred. Will their forbidden romance bring their worlds together or tear them apart?

•••••••••

REVIEW: ARRANGED is the first installment in Julia Crane’s post apocalyptic ARRANGED TRILOGY YA (young adult) paranormal, fantasy series.

Told from first person point of view (Tulupea) ARRANGED focuses on the destruction of Earth. Earth is dying, and with it comes the need to regenerate both the flora and fauna. Tulupea is a faery princess, and her mother has decreed that her only daughter will be the mother to the next generation of hybrid fae-a combination of human and fairy- ones that will begin to heal the earth. When Tulupea meets the intended ‘father’ she finds herself in a battle with bigots of Earth. The remaining population despises the supernatural powers, and have made it their mission to destroy their kind.

ARRANGED is a quick read; an interesting concept but too much information was missing to really get behind what was happening and why. Tulupea and her mother are healers, and breeding the next generation of healers is intended to help heal the planet Earth but there is no explanation as to why or what happened, only that thirteen percent of the human population remains, and most of the planet is dying or dead.

The writing style is awkward in that the reader is not invited into the story but sits on the sidelines waiting for something to happen. The world building is limited; the characters need more fleshing out; the story line lack important information and details necessary for me to thoroughly enjoy

I really wanted to like Arranged. I’ve been fascinated by faeries since I was a child and I love reading books about them, fiction or otherwise. I’m also a huge fan of the fantasy genre. However, there’s one thing that the fantasy genre needs and that is world building. From the start I found myself scratching my head confused about the when and where’s of this story. There’s a general lack of world building that leaves the reader with a vague sense of when and where this story is taking place that detracts from the story, at least for me.

Character wise, at first I found it difficult to connect with Tulupea and there were times I still found her grating. But I found her commitment to what she was doing admirable. Michael, I found flat. There wasn’t much to him besides indecisiveness and a past kindness to Tulupea’s mother. Speaking of her mother, I can’t stand her. She’s shady to me.

The novella has a lot of potential, I just feel like it’s still unfinished. It reads a lot like a draft or a beta read to me. It needs some fleshing out with details about things like the war and how it lead to the extinction of the human race and the earth, how the magical creatures appeared or were they always there, etc.

Forgive me for saying this, but where do I begin faulting this book.

Almost 30% into the book, I found out Tulupea had purple hair. When I'm reading, I don't think about the cover to give me clues; which was prominent here. But couldn't her personal description come any sooner?

There are no physical descriptions of Tulupea's mother, which was rather surprising. After finishing the book, I still don't know what she looks like.

While going to meet Micheal, why does Tulupea glamour-up if she's meant to hide in plain sight on Earth when there are killers out there waiting to kill Faeries? How does a faery blend in the human world if there are wings sticking out of her back?

Tulupea doesn't comprehend terms like "in the mood" and is quick to use it a couple of pages after.

The scenic descriptions were vague and the sentences jerked around.

And don't get me started on the grammatical and typographical errors. Hair-brained? Seriously, even after editing or proofreading the term is hare-brained. Gosh. That was annoying at best. There were so many unnecessary would/could, it was beyond irritating.

Tulupeas tone of speech was not consistent. Also, no sparks flying before the romance even struck. The list of problems is endless and I'd rather send a highlighted red draft than write everything here.

I received a copy of this novella, in exchange for an honest review. In an attempt to revive my score on Netgalley I promised myself I would revisit a few of the review copies I never got around to last year. Arranged, was one of these copies. I went into this remembering little about why I requested a copy so I went in with fairly neutral expectations; there was no eagerness or reluctance to get started. Either way, I was sadly disappointed.
If I'm honest there wasn't much I liked about the novella. The premise was interesting and with a fair bit of work the plot could really be moulded into something worth reading. Other than that though, Arranged really fell flat.
The plot as I said had potential but there were a lot of inconsistencies and the fantasy/sci-fi/dystopia genre blend felt like it was trying to do too much in too little time. The world building (or lack thereof) just made everything feel disconnected and inconsistent. It made the world feel unbelievable so I just wasn't invested in anything that happened. I agree with a lot of what other reviewers have said already: the whole Novella reads like a first draft.

Disclaimer: I received this ebook for free through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I'm honestly not sure what I just read. I'm not even certain what the plot was. Dark faerie princess Tulupea travels to Earth, where her mother the queen is attempting to rejuvenate the planet after a magical war. Since two faeries can't do the job all by themselves, the queen wants Tulupea to "mate" with a human male and create an army of human-faerie hybrids to heal the planet. "Mate" is used loosely, because they end up using human science to mix Tulupea's eggs and the chosen man's sperm. Then the resulting hybrids develop at an alarming rate. The end.

What little conflict in the novella revolves around the human male, Michael's, family, who hates faeries and magic. After they realize he's getting too close with Tulupea, they beat him up, but Michael's shapeshifter dragon friend saves him. And that's about it.

There were just too many inconsistencies in the novella for me to enjoy it. Tulupea thinks and speaks too much like a human teenager, rather than a long-lived, winged faerie. For someone who has the power to conjure objects and clothes out of thin air -- not to mention wields power over life and death -- her reasons for doing or not doing something don't add up.

This was an interesting book in an alternate earth setting, with some great characters. In this Earth the human population has been devastated by war mostly between humans and fairies, but with other supernaturals as well. Now the humans are on the brink of extinction and it is the Fairy Queen’s desire to help repopulate the Earth…. through her daughter Princess Tulupea.

Tulupea is expected to make the ultimate sacrifice by mating with a human whom her mother has betrothed her to. Tulupea is devastated by this order because she doesn’t believe her mother understands the ramifications of this decision. Tulupea will be looked upon as tainted by any potential fairy mates in the future, and will have to give up the one she thought she would be marrying.

Can she be strong enough to do her duty to the Queen, her kingdom, and help repopulate the Earth? Perhaps she can even learn to love her betrothed.

Although I am not usually a lover of stories about the traditional winged fairy types in books, I found the novella very enjoyably and entertaining. The author creates a world where the Fae are trying to restore the Earth which was ravaged by a centuries long war between humans and all creatures magical. In the aftermath of the devastation the world stands on the bring of implosion and it is up to the Unseelie Royalty and a few humans to try to overcome fear and prejudice and save Mother Earth. The main characters and the storyline are engaging and you can see in this novella where the threads of a more complex tale are being laid down. I will definitely read the sequel.

Julia Crane did it again! I loved the Keegan Chronicles and so I had high hopes for this book. And it really was as good as I remembered Cranes writing from her other books. I liked the story about an earth on the verge of dying and my heart went out to Michael after his family's betrayal.
I can't shake the feeling that Queen Acacia has motives she has not yet revealed to her daughter Tulupea and I fear that I'm not going to like them. But I might be mistaken and all plays out well. This book was a very, very good start to the series. It had it all love, betrayal, action, death and hope. I definitely will read book 2 in this series.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. While at first there was a slow start and a whining Tulupea to deal with I was glad to see her suck it up and do what needed to be done. Once she fell in line with her mother to help fix what 100 years of war caused and heal the earth she is a force to be reckoned with. Now that she is on board her and Michael have work to do. Great start for the series. Great character development and story line. Can't wait to see what happens next.
