Cassius, Alpha of Sutter Butte, leads the most ruthless and dangerous pack in the United States. I love books. Not just a little bit, but a lot. Books were my best friends when I was growing up. Books didn’t care if I was new to a town or to a class. They were always there, my trustiest of companions. Until they turned on me and said I had to write them.

I can tell you that my own personal happily ever after included writing books. I’ve always said that an HEA is a work in progress. It’s true in my marriage, my friendships, and in my career. I am constantly nurturing my muse as we dive into new tales, new tropes, new characters and more.

After seventeen years back in Texas, we relocated to the Pacific Northwest in search of seasons, new experiences, and new geography. I can’t wait to discover what life (and my muse) have in store for me.

Maybe writing was always my destiny and romance my fate. After all, my grandmother wasn’t a fan of picture books and used to read me her Harlequin Romance novels.

Friends to lovers, enemies to lovers, friends to enemies to lovers, you name it, I love them and love to write them. I started with Earth Witches Aren’t Easy, the first in the Chance Monroe trilogy, but my characters and I have traveled a long way since I created that urban fantasy world.

One of the series I hear my readers recommend the most is the Untouchable series followed in quick succession by the Vandals, and that just delights me. No lie, whenever one of my readers brings up my wolves, I do a little a fist pump.

I’m active on social media, and I love hearing from readers. Feel free to tag me with a question about any of my books, or just say hi!

4 Cassius can love me any day of the week stars. Shifter/paranormal romances always entertain me on a different level because they mix complete fantasy with the real world. This book was interesting yet heart wrenching. There's a lot of pain that comes from the type of society Cassius has his wolves in. What he asks of Sovvan could ultimately kill her.

Sovvan is a Omega which many people believe to be inferior to an Alpha rather than a complimentary wolf. Omega's are also feared for they are not well understood since not many actually exist. Sovvan offers her help to Cassius because she recognizes he is a good man and wants to protect and save his own. He also shows her something that sparks her interest.

The story builds and rolls with Sovvan and Cassius getting closer and closer to one another even while time to save his pack is running out. There's bad decisions, tough decisions, matters of the heart, and loss of loved ones. The read keeps you pulled to it with sexy scenes, an impressive Alpha, a witty Omega, and pretty awesome writing.

*** 3.5 Stars ***

Can be read as a standalone.

Cassius is one bad ass Alpha, and he leads one of the most broken and violent packs. He wants to change tradition and repair the relationships between his wolves. So he contacts Sovvan, an Omega from a different pack, for help.

Sovvan understands that helping Cassius will be dangerous, but she knows she has to help. As an Omega, she has the power and strength to see weaknesses. Sovvan is welcomed to his land with mistrust and violence from other members. Sovvan's task isn't going to be easy, but she'll do whatever it takes to help the Alpha.

I liked this story because it was unique. Cassius trained himself not to trust anyone, so he and Savvan did not instantly fall in love. The plot was also focused more on the turmoil in the pack than the romance. I also enjoyed that characters from previous books were involved. As a reader that only read the first book in the series, I did not feel left out. My only issue was that sometimes the story dragged and got lost in the details.

When I started this book, I had no idea that it was the eighth installment in a series. It held up ok as a standalone, although it was pretty obvious there was backstory I was unfamiliar with. That’s not what kept me from loving the book, though. The pacing was uneven. But worse, I never really connected with this romance and I felt like there were holes in the story that had nothing to do with the 7 books I skipped over.

Our hero is Cassius, Alpha of a pack known for its violence and brutality. He has called a neighboring pack for a favor; he wants to borrow their Omega to help transform his pack to something better. Sovvan is that Omega. She risks her own safety to meet with Cassius and hear his request. And when confronted with his stark need, she can’t say no.

Cassius wants to put an end to the bloody Reaping that happens every year in his pack. And he believes Sovvan can help him do it. But it could kill her in the process. In the meantime, they act on their mutual attraction, taking things past the already complicated dynamics between them.

I had problems. One of the biggest was not entirely understanding how the Omega thing worked. I get that she was supposed to be able to mirror people’s weaknesses, but practically, I just didn’t see that clearly enough. She spends all this time avoiding the touch of others, but when I saw her do it, the impact seemed very anticlimactic. For something so central to the story, I felt like this needed a bigger demonstration.

I also kept waiting for more of Cassius’ backstory. I felt like we got part of it, but not the whole story. Like how he became Alpha and where Maria came from. Um, who was her mother? It seems like it would be relevant.

The relationship itself was ok. It went from zero to 100 physically. Then from zero to 100 emotionally. I just didn’t feel it. The sex was pretty good, but I just didn’t feel connected to these two. Or to any of the characters, really. The book was slow at times. Plus the conflict with the Russians came totally out of left field. Maybe I missed more in those other books than I think I did. Or maybe the story is just disjointed. Or maybe it’s just me.

Either way, this one wasn’t a hit.

This is a great addition to the series! I was intrigued to learn more about the history of the Sutter Butte pack – it explained so much about their attitudes and interactions. Cassius is their Alpha and really wants things to change for all of them, to give peace and harmonious living a chance but to achieve that he’ll have to change so much in himself and his pack. As he sets out to do this he uncovers dissension in the ranks and has problems knowing just who to trust. Add in his feelings for Sovvan Stark, the Omega of the Delta Crescent pack who has agreed to help him and nothing is going to be simple for any of them!

Whilst this is the eighth book in the series, it still works well as a standalone. However, if you’ve read any of the earlier stories, you’ll recognise some of the secondary characters in this story. It has well developed, complex characters who it is easy to empathise with because the author paints such vivid images of people, places, events and emotions, making it feel as though the reader is witnessing the events first hand rather than just reading about them. The story is fast paced with many convoluted twists that you’re never quite certain how things will work out in the end. A real page turner, an enthralling read, this is a brilliant shifter story that I have no hesitation in highly recommending to anyone who enjoys paranormal shifter adventures with wolves that have complex relationships, danger, rebellion and, of course, romance!

Many thanks to the author, publisher, Barclay Publicity and NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Wow! There are not many authors that I could honestly say that I would read every word they wrote, but I believe Heather Long would be on that short list, and very near the top. Even though I have not read the Wolves of Willow Bend series to completion, I have read, I believe, 5 of the 8 so far in the series, having missed the first three. When I read my first episode of this saga, I was hooked. I knew then that I couldn't possibly miss any more of this series, and I hope to be able to go back and read the missed episodes.
Ms. Long has a very distinct talent, and I include her in a very short list of authors that share this talent, of being able to spin a tale that is, not only believable, but makes you feel like you are living the story as it unfolds. When I read about the wolves of Willow Bend, whether it is the Willow Bend pack, the Yukon pack, Sutter Butte, Delta Crescent, Hudson River, or the newly formed Three Rivers pack, Ms. Long writes in a way that brings me there, to fight their fights, and feel the love that blooms, and every thing else in between. In this episode, we are allowed to follow Cassius, the hard hearted, tough as nails Sutter Butte alpha, and his quest to change his pack. His need of the Delta Crescent's omega, Sovvan, is, in his mind, the only way to get through the upcoming changes, hoping she will be able to point out his weaknesses so he could strengthen himself where required. Packed with an unbelievable amount of action, a bit of suspense, high levels of emotion and a little bit of fun and games, this book will have you biting your nails and on the edge of your seat. It is a standalone, but so much easier to follow if you have read others before it. I am looking forward to reading the next chapter in the Wolves of Willow Bend saga. I hope we will soon see a mate for Diesel. (You will have to read to find out why Diesel). If you are looking for a great saga, that you will have a hard time putting down, and love the shifter world, this is definitely the one you want to pick up.

I received an ARC of 'Desert Wolf' from the author, in return for an honest review.

Oh WOW, that was an intense installment of the "Wolves of Willow Bend" series. I'm actually a little sad when I finsihed reading 'Desert Wolf', I could have kept on reading about Cassius & Sovvan. 'Desert Wolf' is the 8th book in Heather's "Wolves of Willow Bend" series, you don't have to read this series in order to understand what's going on, I've only read about half of the series so far but plan to get the rest read once I'm able.

Cassius wants more for his pack, he wants the end of the yearly bloodbaths that have become a tradition, he wants what other packs have for his own. He asks the Alpha of Delta Cresent for the help he requires, in the form of one ofher packs Omega's. Sovvan has thought hard for the past few months about what to do with the Alpha from Sutter Butte's request, with her Hound & protector in towe she makes the journey....

'Desert Wolf' was different in so many ways compared to the previous books I've read in the series, where before you could see the change within the couple towards one-another... between Cassius & Sovvan it took a little more time, well maybe not for Sovvan. Their interractions with one-another had more to do with understanding just why Sovvan was called in to help. Even though Sovvan is an Omega, she has sass, she arose to the challenge that Cassius asked of her. Hmmmm I can't say too mcuh about Cassius without giving away too much, you really need to read it & have it unravell to apreciated this alpha. Heather weaved such a thrilling tale of suspense, action, passion, sassyness & love.... I found myself drawn into the story & unable to stop until I'd finished. I NEED to read the series ASAP & can't wait to read what comes next in the series...

Cassius, Alpha of Sutter Butte, is snarly and mean and rough and tuff and buff and stuff but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t feel, doesn’t want, doesn’t hope. What he wants is to take his pack into a less violent less fearful future. To do that he needs help; Sovvan Stark, Omega of Delta Crescent is the help Cassius feels it will take. He doesn’t expect who she is and what she does to him personally but isn’t crazy enough to look fate in the mouth. He just doesn’t know if he is going to live long enough to enjoy her. Sovvan is an Omega. A special type of wolf. She isn’t immediately cowed by any Alpha and so stands outside pack structure. Her gift is reflection. She can reflect your weakness back at you. She can discover a packs weakness. She can also it seems borrow your fear, anger, grief or intense emotion and use it. She responded to Cassius’s need to improve the lot of his pack she didn’t expect to fall for him.
Heather Long is a fantastic story teller and this may be her best story yet. Desert Wolf can be read standalone but will be better enjoyed if you’ve read the rest of the series. I loved everything about Sovvan except for her name (for which I had to use a dofer cause I couldn’t figure out how to pronounce it) and Cassius turned out to be deeper than he’s let anyone know. This book will leave you feeling good and hopeful for the future of the Sutter Butte pack.

Netgalley ARC for honest review.

The fact that I love wolf shifter romances made me really excited about this book. Cassius, a tough take no prisoners Alpha, will do anything in the name of saving his pack. He's proven that by taking drastic measures that causes an uproar among his pack. Sovvan, against her better judgement and her own Alpha, has chosen to help Cassius even if it may cause her death. There's something about Cassius that pulls Sovvan in and makes her risk her life to help him. After growing closer the two of them will risk it all not only to save the pack, but to also save themselves.
This story had everything you need to make it great shifter romance. It has the bad boy with issues who wants to prove himself and save his people at the same time, and it also has the strong, sweet, and loyal female who wants to be by his side to help him save his people as well as himself. For the most part I enjoyed the story, I just didn't feel the connection between Cassius and Sovvan. The background story about the pack history and the battles for dominance saved this book for me. That held my attention more than these two as a couple. For that reason, I'm giving this story 3.5 stars

The real Cassius come out
Cassius born and bred to be as tough as nails is the Alpha of Sutter Butte. Yearly the pack has a tradition called the reaping that gives every wolf shifter of age to better his position in the pack. But it’s become more than just that and is no longer a good thing. Cassius wants to end the reaping but it’s going to take a lot from several people as well as the help of an Omega he’s asked to borrow from Delta Crescent pack. Little did he know that he could fall for the Omega and change everything he has planned. Lots of action and adventure as well as a love story with some sorrow mixed in and an unknown player in the game that changes things. Well written and very entertaining to read. This may be part of a series yet it’s still a self-contained story.

***ARC was received from the Publisher and Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.

To be succinct, this was a worthwhile read, that should be allowed to split off into a trilogy/series of it's own.

IMO, the worldbuilding was well played, and the opposites attract combination of a damaged Alpha Wolf and his reflective Omega wolf, made for an explosive combination. Although I liked this book, it wasn't without its issues. Towards the 50% mark, I found an unnecessary amount of lag and one dimensionality.

Fortunately, the author pulled this story away from the edge, and finished it well.

Other than this, it's an interesting take on the Werewolf genre with an erotic twist.

Giving this one: 3.5 stars.

Complex story, with an lonely H and an omega on loan from another pack. He wants her help as he tries to change the culture in his pack. She's a wonderful person. But she can't understand what's behind the pack's issues because she sees his integrity and care. Loved how willing she was to help him, and how much he loved her. A good mystery and a love story.

Heather Long has done it again! This tale is woven so intricately it captures you and doesn't let go until the last word is read and then you want more.

This is a difficult book, but worth every minute. Cassius is a brutal Alpha, he has to be in order to rule. However, he has a vision of what he wants his pack to be and will go to any lengths to achieve it.

With misgivings Serafina, lets her Omega Sovvan decide whether or not she will help Cassius achieve his goal.

There is already unrest with the knowledge of an Omega coming to Sutter Butte, but even Cassius didn't realize the extent of the hate and brutality that would be shown at her arrival. The action starts right at the beginning and even as they converse, umm, growl at each other you can feel the heat rising between them.

When Sovvan gets restless and bored, Cassius finds her on the roof. Her excuse, she needs to run.

Oh and run they did, as Cassius reveals a side to him no one has ever seen before.

Claire and Tyler, from Willow Bend join in the action, with Mason's approval. We also see Julian, and all the other Alphas with the exception of Diesel, as they reflect on all the things that have happened in this book.

A fast paced read with plenty of twists, turns, surprises, laughter and tears. As I re-read this series I remember why I love these wolves so very much.

I’ve read Snow Wolf prior to this so understand what Maddy is and the Russian wolf situation.
I just felt we don’t get a romantic connection between Sovvan and Cassius, at all.
So many situations that could have been something but became nothing.
What was with the housekeeper suddenly becoming his daughter. Where the heck did that come from. I went back to see if I’d missed this major fact bomb but couldn’t find the reveal.
I also really hated what happened with Faust. Pity he didn’t use his gun.

Wow, just wow! Talk about character development, Cassius takes us all on his journey, as he, and we, figure out who he really is. We also see what depths he truly has, that even he doesn’t realize. So many unexpected moments, for our characters, for the pack, as some things are exactly as they seem, and others, not so much. Some of those things that happened were like a punch to the gut, and others seemed so obvious once they were revealed. Needless to say, I couldn’t devour this quick enough, while I never wanted it to end <3

I never really connected with the couple and felt like their story isn't deepened enough. I didn't really understand how he Omega thing works as not much is shown, only vaguely explained. There are things I felt were thrown there without any explanation, as for Cassius and his "housekeeper" who suddenly appears to be his daughter! Why, how? In a book about him it should have been explained or not said at all.

Brutal, painful, hopeful, and sexy.

Oh man. This story. It guts me. It’s harsh and brutal, sad and heartbreaking... but so. Damn. Hopeful. Cassius and Sovvan, together, have so many hurdles to overcome in healing Sutter Butte, and the unexpected twist nearly does them in. The ending, though... so worth it.

I was once again drawn into the world that Heather Long has created and found it hard to put this one down. This book was a bit darker than the others in the series that I have read, but that wasn’t a surprise since the Sutter Butte pack itself is dark. Even though this the eighth book in the series you can definitely read this as a standalone, but of course starting from the beginning will give a bit more insight into the dynamics between the packs and the alphas.

Cassius rules his pack with little tolerance for disobedience or challenge, using the threat of violence and consequence to keep everyone in line. His cold and ruthless rule results from the discord in his pack, but he wants to change that by finding a way to change how his pack operates and, if necessary, eliminating those who will stand in his way. As the story unfolds and we get to learn about Cassius’s past and his rise to alpha, it’s easy to see why most fear him. But it was also easy to understand why he would want more for his pack – a better way of life that will allow the pack more freedom and less bloodshed. And even though he can be ruthless, he also cares for his pack and takes care of them.

Sovvan was just perfect for Cassius. Her being an Omega was a critical part of Cassius’s plan to change his pack, but she didn’t let him push her around or force her into a decision she needed to make for herself. I loved that she was fierce and able to take care of herself and she wasn’t afraid to stand up for what she wanted. You could sense the need in her from the beginning to find herself, and it was clear the trip from her pack to Sutter Butte was her own journey of self-discovery. I loved her loyalty to her pack, but also her ability to see the bigger picture and do the right thing.

Cassius and Sovvan together were fun to watch and from their first encounter I knew these two would match up well. Sovvan never backed down from Cassius, yet she knew when to give just enough to soothe his alpha side. From the first moment they meet you could feel the chemistry between them, and I loved how their relationship evolved with the story and played into the events that unfolded.

You could definitely feel the darkness in the pack and the tension that always seemed to be present whenever the pack was around. There were many things happening in this book, from all of the pieces that Cassius had to put in place for his plan, to the internal issues of the pack. Heather Long did a fabulous job weaving all of the parts together to create a story that came together to leave me totally satisfied but wanting to know what is going to happen to next. Even though this can be read as a standalone, there is an overall story arc that seems to be coming to head and I can’t wait to see where the next book takes us.

I just love the world that Heather Long has created and find it so easy to get wrapped up in her characters and their emotions. Another great read by Heather Long that I would highly recommend.

Lately I read a lot of interesting books, but this one won me.
Who knows me is also aware of the fact that my true love are werewolves.
Personally I can do nothing. Wolves, werewolves, shifters have a special place in my heart and Cassius has taken a good portion of it.
He’s the Alpha of Sutter Butte, one of the most ruthless and violent pack of U.S. He has no fear, no doubts, no friends. He trusts no one and he doesn’t give you a second chance: or with him or against.

«Cassius is a cagey one. Dark, dangerous and not for you» said Faustus to Sovvan, the Omega of Delta Crescent. She is a smiley and joyful person who lives a beloved life in her pack in New Orleans.

Cassius and Sovvan are like Darkness and Light but they have to find a compromise to work together.
Cassius needs the help of Sovvan.
As Omega, she has the power of seeing fear and weakness in the people she touches. Therefore the Omegas inspire fear, mistrust and hatred of self. Therefore Sutter Butte’s pack doesn’t agree the presence of an Omega from Delta Crescent.
Despite his cruelty, Cassius has a dream. He would lead a peaceful pack and the only way he found to change his pack is to force it to see its weakness. Sutte Butter’s people fight against each other to reach the leadership instead of stay close to defend their self from external attacks.
The apex of the fight is the Reaping, a celebration where everyone, male or female, can fight for the leadership. Cassius’ idea is to end the Reaping, forcing the Omega to take part, knowing that this project could kill her. What he doesn’t aspect is that his frozen heart was heated by this little strong woman.

«My wolf is smaller than most… You saw me»
«You’re adorable. Delicate. Beautiful. Utterly capable. Size doesn’t dictate strength or power».

How I couldn’t fall in love for a lovely bastard like Cassius?

«Cassius was… perfect. (…) Stubborn. Hard-headed. Tough as hell. Disciplined. Dangerous. Those were all words betters-suited to the Alpha. Still perfect».

For Cassius the dilemma is: change his pack putting Sovvan in jeopardy or protecting her, losing all his hope for a new pack?

«He couldn’t lose them. He had worked too damn hard for the first and waited too damn long for the second».

This book is a perfect mix of action, love and lust.

«One thing I know about Alphas and wolves and packs is that we need touch, we need play, and we need sex. I think you need all of the above more than you realized».

I completely agree with Sovvan on this point and that’s why I love so much wolves.
I hope you’ll understand!

Disclaimer: I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

"Desert Wolf" by Heather Long is a rare kind of book. The blurb on the back cover explains quite succinctly the lead up to this book, and also describes what happens in about 85% of the plot. Cassius needs an Omega to unify his pack. He asks Sovvan to come. It took her several months, but she decided to help. Now Cassius is traveling to the New Mexico-Texas border to meet Sovvan and her guardian, Faust.

I love how Ms. Long takes what might have been a page of narration and stretches it across several chapters. As a reader, I learned about the hell Cassius has endured to become alpha and hold the position. I also learn how much he wants to help his pack become better. I also learn what an Omega is, and who Sovvan is. She is gentle and strong, curious and calm, and exactly what Cassius needs.

Ms. Long includes mayhem, betrayal, playfulness, love, hate, and more into this one book than I have seen in a long time. The characters pop out, and you care about what happens to them. From the youngest child to the supposedly unflappable alpha, you want the best for everyone. The action seems real; the pacing of the story almost perfect. Every fight scene had me cringing at the punches, and torn between wanting to read more to find out what happened and wanting to put down the book because I hated when characters I cared about got hurt.

One of my favorite parts of this book is the creation story of Cassius' pack, the Sutter Butte pack. First, you hear it from an outsider's point of view and you wonder what Sovvan is getting herself into. Then you hear it from an insider's point of view, and though it is basically the same story, your heart will go out to the people of Sutter Butte.

For the record, I never read any of the other book in the Wolves of Willow Bend series, but I never felt as if I needed to for this book. That in itself is the sign of an amazing author. Though I must admit, I will be getting the rest of the series now because I want to know what happened before.

I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good story, who loves fantasy books, who loves werewolves, and who likes a good old-fashioned love story.

I give this book 5 stars out of 5.

Cassius, Alpha of Sutter Butte, leads the most ruthless and dangerous pack in the United States. A pack comprised of misfits who didn’t fit in their previous packs, cast offs discarded by their packs and forgotten wolves who rose to create a pack more than a century before it utter defiance of the order of the day. Sometimes pitiless and cruel, he wants more for his people than a yearly bloodbath as they fight for a new place, a better spot in the pecking order. To change his pack, means to change himself and he will find rebellion on all sides, not the least of which is his own defiant heart.

Sovvan Stark, Omega of Delta Crescent, lives a cherished, beloved life in the center of her pack, a delicate and hard won balance. Though she is not the only Omega, she is the most experienced with the tremors of pack upset when power shifts from Alpha to Alpha. When her Alpha approaches her about Sutter Butte’s request, Sovvan considers the matter for several long months. While she might hold within her the key to helping the Sutter Butte Alpha, the undertaking could very well kill her.

Accompanied by a single Hound, Sovvan begins a journey to help Cassius rebuild the foundation of his pack, but first she will have to transform him…

Ohhhhh myyyy goood!!!!
Finally Cassius!!!!!
I am so in love with this bad boy ~caughs~ Alpha...i meant Alpha.
The rumors talk about a hard, visious ,uncaring Alpha but what we came to see is an Alpha with lots of humor, that cares to much and that can make us puuuurrr....
In the other hand we have Sovvan....i so loved this girl! She is a breath of fresh air and so damn funny and unruly and free!
Ths book is pantie melting!
The action is non stop and the emotional rollercoaster will take you high up and then will drop you so low you'll forget your name!
I cried in this book ....i cried a lot and perhaps i even got a little mad at the author at one specific point but due to the fact i do not like spoilers i ain't gonna say....still it was not fair.
This book had me hooked in its pages so much that i truly couldn't put it down for a whole day and when i was done i suffered from post book hangover!
Heather Long has done a freaking amazing job in this story and its one you do not want to miss!!!

Desert Wolf by Heather Long is the 8th book in the Wolves of Willow Bend series. Desert Wolf follows the Sutter Butte pack and their razor sharp alpha, Cassius.

This series has become my addiction for 2015. I love the characters in this series, especially the way Long is blending some of the different pack’s members together. Each installment contains such wonderful character growth and Cassius’ story was no exception. But lets face it, if you have read this series, you recognized he was going to be a hard character to connect to. Long did a great job building him up as ruthless, hard-edged and cruel. Even I wondered if Cassius had the ability to be redeemed, but as usual Long works her magic and once she allows you to glimpse inside of Cassius’ soul, you are quickly jumping onto Team Cassius. This team doesn’t play fair and I enjoyed the struggle and torture the author put this Alpha through. Long provided us with glimpses and a general feel of Cassius’ backstory and childhood, but I felt for such a unique and hard character, stronger details would have enriched the story and pushed this over the edge to 5 star territory.

The lovely Sovvan Stark from Delta Crescent softens the feel of this emotional story. Sutter Butte is like no other pack we have had a chance to get to know. And honestly, it isn’t a pretty sight. I love that Sovvan, even as an Omega (they reflect the worst attributes of a pack or wolf), always manages to see the greatness in each individual. She is a beautiful character and was a true joy to read about.

Desert Wolf was a completely different story than we are used to getting in the Wolves of Willow Bend series. After all..the Wolves of Willow Bend are pretty tame. Come take a step onto the wild side at Sutter Butte and find out what happens when the pack is a mess and Alpha is read for change. If you have not read this series, stop messing around and go for it! Most of the installments in this series are standalone titles, but with Desert Wolf I would recommend reading the previous stories. Having an understanding of why Sutter Butte is different and how Cassius is perceived really set the scene for his story.

By now I have read quite a several of her books from this series so you could say I am hooked. This one is the one that really is the most dramatic one by far. It probably has to do with the fact this one centers around Cassius, the one that is the most dangerous of all the alphas because if his intensity and his packs history. She will with this one take her teeth, bite you at the collar and pull you in,guarding you, not letting you go. You do not want to go anywhere anyways. It starts out fast and raw switches into high gear from there. He to meet up with someone very important and none too soon either. Sovvan and her guardian, her hound, who has been with her for years are on they way to meet their escort to Sutter Butte. She is feared by most and not understood, but Cassius has requested her and for him to have done so he has something planned. He meets up with them just as they have been ambushed but it is no light tousle either. Even though it has been busy so far it still will only get more so but on that oh so better also. This author will tell this story with these two as the center with the changes that will happen, uprisings exposed, down and dirty filled with rawness not having been read of the like in a long time. The dance that will go down between these two will be different also because of who they are but the most fascinating because of it. She will be the key to open a side he has closed down and he will be her center. A bit of warning also is to have a few tissues handy because there is some heavy events that are like life, crap happens even to those we love so the emotions will be tested in a few places with a piece of your heart jabbed at. The enemy will be closer than they think. Very captivating relationship that will grow with these two that will let you see he has a heart after all. There will also be history in the making and the last part is the dynamite that will leave you shell shocked when you have reached the last page.

This is the first time I have read a book by this author, but not the first time I have read anything in this genre. Heather Long has a different talent and use for her Omega wolves compared to what I am used to reading, which I found interesting. I was intrigued by the cover so I decided to read this book but started thinking that it would be another predictable story. Boy was I surprised by the twists and turns in this book.

Cassius is considered one of the most brutal Alphas around, swift to punish or kill transgressors, and suspicious trespassers. Sovvan is an Omega wolf he wants to ‘borrow’ from another pack whose help Cassius desperately needs. Before Sovvan arrives in his territory there is trouble resulting in bloodshed, leading him to believe that there is much more wrong with his pack than he ever thought. Cassius planned everything, and placed key players in specific positions to play out their part with Sovvan having the most important part of all. If she accepts his request for help, this could cost Sovvan her life. Is his pack worth the risk?

This was a really good book, I enjoyed reading it. I recommend this book.

4 ½ of 5 Stars

Sutter Butte Pack Alpha, Cassius Lucera, is determined to change the culture of his pack.  He will need the help of Sovvan Stark, Omega of Delta Crescent Pack, to achieve his goal that might put both their lives in jeopardy.

I really like Cassius.  Yes, he is a lethal killer but not because he wants to be.  He is a great leader who cares about the overall well-being of his pack.  He is afraid to become close to anyone because trust does not come easy for him.

I love Sovvan’s insights and intelligence.  She is a deep character that got you thinking.  I appreciate that she does what she feels is right and is not influenced by her pack mates.

I like the setting of the story.  It seems like most wolf shapeshifter novels take place in the woods and/or mountains.  The desert was an interesting location.  Heather Long did a great job describing the different obstacles a desert pack would face.

I really enjoyed the plot.  It had a lot of depth, drama, and twist.  This is actually the first book that I have read in the Wolves of Willow Bend series.  I had no problem following the novels and enjoyed the characters.  I am definitely interested in back tracking and reading the previous books to hear their stories.  After reading the epilogue, I am also, intent in reading the next book in the series.
