This is the first book I've read by the prolific Mr.Vaughan, who clearly knows how to plot and tell a great story. The author imbues the fast paced revenge story with a cast of interesting characters and enough surprises and twists to keep the story interesting and page-turningly propulsive.
I was going to give this one four stars, but changed my mind and went with 5. This book put me in mind of the old B western movies that were run on T.V. in the early sixties on Saturday afternoons. Now don't get me wrong there were some B western that were pretty hokey, but then there was that rare gem that just sparkled. This story was one of the ones that sparkle. The plot is basic revenge driven about two brothers out to avenge the rape and death of their sister by the villain, who they think also stole a gold shipment that one brother had liberated from the Yankee Army. Many of the characters are tied together one way or the other. Over this is just a good story and like a good B western just long enough to enjoy on a fall afternoon. So saddle up and hit the trail for a good B western.
I thoroughly enjoyed Glory Dust, and any lover of Western movies or books, will enjoy it too. There the double dealing, two-timing, shooting action, you’d expect from a good Western. Not to mention the pursuit of gold, which more often than not, turned out to be dust. There is the unfulfilled love interest, the stranger with the cold-snake eyes, and a deadly shot. I love the Chaney brothers, especially Buck, and his relationship with Lucinda Gray. I would have liked to see their relationship developed into something more substantial, but I guess it was not to be. This book has it all; I can’t say enough about it. If you love Louis L'Amour, you’ll love Robert Vaughan’s, Gold Dust. Well done!
This was a outstanding short read about two brothers separated by the Civil War, fighting on opposite sides reunite after a heinous crime at their farm compels them to search for an old enemy who had stolen a gold shipment at the end of the war. The book is well written and offers a good view of the west in unsettled post-reconstruction times. The writing is clear and crisp and the characters and plot are good as well. Recommend without reservation.
Robert Vaughan – Chaney Brothers Bk 1 – Glory Dust – Reviewed 8/1/19 What would you do if someone wronged you…? Hunt them down, no matter how long it takes!!!
The Chaney brothers fought the war on opposite sides, but no one wrongs them…. Together they will spend their lives together to that person and gain their justice and REVENGE! After Buck was ordered to hijack a shipment of gold near the end of the war, he found that the commander of the troops for the movement of the gold was none other than his brother. After obtaining the gold and on the way back to his troops the Union troops were bearing down on him, so he hid the gold at his family’s home. Now the gold is missing and the man that took it committed and the act of treachery and bloodshed against his family.
What did I like? I love westerns and when they also include parts about the history of our country that makes them even more enjoyable. Then when you add HONOR and REVENGE then it takes a book over the top for me.
What will you like? Very well written with excellent descriptions for all the amazing action and trouble that these two brothers get into. You feel like you are riding with them in their search for the culprit. The details are along with the descriptions make you feel like you are watching, rather than reading. It’s awesome that some writers can do this with just words in print. The storyline is heartfelt and makes you wonder where honor went to in this life of ours. Too many have forgotten that it was once a very important part of life. I am looking forward to the next book “The Chaney Edge”, I like the way this author writes! I borrowed this on Kindle Unlimited.
An RV Western About Stolen Gold As the Civil War Ended
RV has penned a western that begins as the Civil War ends. A Confederate group Rob from a Union group 900K dollars in gold. The robbers are led by one brother and the gold escort is led by another. The good is hidden, but the Confederate Officer hides the money on his families farm. The Colonel he told about the gold steals it and the chase is on. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
Mixing Civil War history with brothers looking for revenge after the war makes for fast enjoyable book. The main characters are well rounded and likable. The villains are so bad you can't wait to see them get what they need. Only, look out for a twist. Enjoyed reading this book.
The Chaney brothers combine forces to get their sister"d murderer
They went many miles trying to track down her murderer. They come to a town in Texas. They help the town and ranchers fight back against the man they thought was responsible. His hired killer kills him. The brothers finally catch their sister's murderers.
Once again another thriller from Robert Vaughan. An excellent book except for the ending. It would have ended better if the brothers had roded back into town and found the Armstrong ranch had been left to Miss Lily and she’d cleared up the dams and the smaller ranches were now able to operate.
This was one helluva book, lots of drama throughout this book, lots of action packed scenes and moments especially when you least expect them, they're there! Definitely a must read, so don't miss this book, this Author has you captured from page one, loved it. 📚🤠🐝🎶
Westerns and Robert Vaughan were both made to be together. Each book that I've read by this extremely talented author has been different and enticing. His characters develop quite well, you know who's going to be our hero. Buy it, read it, review it; then purchase your NEXT Robert Vaughan novel!
Good read. The civil war/war between the States was a family dividing mess. Glad the Chaney brothers survived, renewed their relationship, and avenged Becky. Graphic description of bodies after shooting.
The Civil war had a major impact on many families. Many families lost men in the fighting but many innocent people died as well. The Chaney brother fought on oppose sides during the war but they lost a sister to a man who stole gold from the army.
This book told a good story which gave an understanding of family’s on different sides of the Civil war and how they came back together for a common cause.
I would have given 5 stars but they took The Lord’s name in vain once.... I do hate that! The story line was good and kept me on the edge of my seat...
Typical white hat vs black hat western with requisite budding romance. And for extra feel good, the old slave who loved his kind masters so much he stayed on after being freed
A classic style revenge, quest western , with a interesting twist in the climax pages. Well written. Style reminds me a lot of Louis L'Amour. Now reading the second volume in the series.
The book offered some very complex dynamics, without being a complex read. It was better than a typical turn-a-page western but had a few time gaps that could have been cleaned up a bit.
Really enjoyed the book about the brothers. Came back together after the war from fighting on opposite sides to go after the ones that killed their sister.
If you have read some of Vaughn's other works, you can see he is using some of the same plot lines and situations here, rather blatantly. And how does a villain "hiss" when he talks. I understand that "hiss" implies a reptilian, hence evil, persona but how does one talk hissing unless he is dragging out his "s"'s?
