Hong Kong: The Monocle Travel Guide

Rate this book
The Hong Kong guide comes in at 148 pages, is printed on great stock and has a hardback cover. Written by our team in the city, this is a book that takes in all the speed and dynamism of this pulsating commercial hub but also leads you down alleyways to hard-to-find cocktail bars and small design ateliers. Hong Kong has been hard to get to know properly – until now.

The Monocle Travel Guide series reveals our favourite places in each city we cover, from the ideal route for an early-morning run to the best spots for independent retail. Full of surprises and quirks, they also feature detailed design and architecture pages, neighbourhood walks to get you away from the crowds and our favourite places to eat everything be it tasty fast food or something truly celebratory.

If you've never been to Hong Kong this is the book to read. It's probably the place I've travelled to the most and I still found a couple things in the guide that were useful to me.

For first time travelers and would-be Hong Kongers, this is the guide for you. Being from Monocle you can expect them to report on the finer side of the city but that should be a given.

A different take on Hong Kong from the usual travel guides which features some little-known places and things. However, there was too much content on the individual stories and impressions they had about the Hong Kong of the past and today which I found pretty boring. It might have been better to reassign this part to feature more things and places of interest.

I received this book as a gift before I studied abroad in HKG fall 2016. Unfortunately I left this book behind when I packed, but I wanted to finish it anyway. I cannot wait to go back to HKG, as my adventures and list of things to see and do is a lot more informed and intentional with this book in hand.
