I should never have said yes!

As soon as the words tumbled out of my mouth, I knew I had made a major mistake...

Why did I ever agree to help my narcissistic-mother plan "the wedding of the year" to some dreamboat she just met on a cruise ship? I guess I could back out, but I won't. Call me crazy, but I didn't want to disappoint her—even though she's always disappointed me.

Thanks to all this forced togetherness, I'm seeing a whole different side of the woman I thought I knew—things I never imagined. And now I'm wondering if everything I believed about my life was a lie…

Was that her plan? Or is there more?

This humorous, emotionally honest women's contemporary fiction novel will tug at your heartstrings, and the twist ending will shock you!

Plan Bea is a wonderful exploration of a mother and daughter trying to rebuild a broken relationship. There were moments that made me laugh, moments that choked me up and moments I just wanted to slap someone.

The characters were well developed and I found Annabel likeable and relatable, as for her mother Bea..... see the last point in the previous sentence.

This is the second of Hilary's books I've read and I'm really looking forward to the next one (You big tease Hilary! Leave me hanging like that! Now hurry up and publish Plan Cee!) I received this book free in exchange for an honest review.

**Edit**
I just reread this via audiobook in preparation for the sequel, Plan Cee. I loved the story just as much this time around, even knowing the twists in advance. The narrator is brilliant - capturing the characters perfectly, from a small innocent boy to the snobby grandmother Bea.

To say Anna and her mother Beatrice have a strained relationship is an understatement. Plan Bea chronicles their journey to repair their bond and come to terms with the past. A major, tragic life event is the cause of their rift and the author skillfully weaves the present with the past in flashbacks. Although a light read, the subject matter was very sad at times and I found myself choking back tears, but in a good way! It was so authentically heart wrenching yet often very funny too. The characters were so well fleshed out and three dimensional - no one was perfect and no one was fatally flawed - like real life. I thought the twist was genius!

I read the author's first book and although I really enjoyed it, she has really grown as a writer. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next and was excited to read the sneak peek of Plan Cee!

I have been waiting so long to read this book! And when that chance arrived, I couldn't put it down! The writing is superb and I wouldn't expect anything less from Hilary. (I LOVE the name of the adorable cat as well, Lila. <3)

Anna really grabs your attention from the beginning. She has what looks to be the prefect family from the outside, but on the inside is a broken woman who has wanted nothing more to be loved by her mother and to have that mother/daughter relationship she has craved for years.

Bea is a very head strong woman who is used to getting what she wants when she wants it. She comes across as very cold and rigid with no real emotional attachment t Anna, Cole or even her own grandchildren Violet and Harley.

Then Bea comes to Anna with her newest undertaking, she is getting MARRIED! Anna does a double take? Not only is her mother marrying a man that she has only known for a few months but she is asking Anna to be her WEDDING PLANNER? Anna thinks she is certifiable at this point. But against her better judgment and Cole's reservations about the whole idea, Anna agrees to help her out.

Throughout the way they go and pick out invitations, flowers, dresses, food and more. Every time Anna makes a suggestion, Bea shoots it down and goes with the complete opposite. Anna starts to question why she is even there?

Without giving much more of this amazing story away, let me just say you need to read it to fully grasp the dynamic of this mother/daughter relationship from beginning to end. You will get so attached to these characters and really feel the emotions they are feeling every step of their personal journeys!

Sit back, grab a glass of wine or a bottle and enjoy the ride! It will be worth it 100%!

This is a story of second chances, forgiveness and relationships.

Annabel O'Conner and her mother, Beatrice Buchanan, have a very troubled relationship. They chat via phone on Thursdays for 15 minutes. This is all the contact they have! This arrangement was set in place at the request of Bea and has been in place for 12 years!

When Anna became pregnant with her first child, she had to wait until Thursday to tell her mom .... when Anna gave birth to her daughter, Violet, she had to wait until Thursday to tell her mom. This is their relationship.

Anna has a wonderful husband and two beautiful children. She has a job she loves and also a great relationship with her mother-in-law and Cole's total family. But .... she doesn't know her own mother.

This is the story of how two women journey back to being mother and daughter. What a ride, the drama, secrets, lies, mistakes, miscommunication and a past that plays a large part in the demise of Anna and Bea's relationship are all dredged up in flashbacks, both painful and sweet.

I probably need to point out here that I love and adore books about relationships ... friends, mother's and daughters, siblings .... they all interest me. The more complex and messed up, the more I like the story.

I highly recommend this book ... I'm excited to read another book by this author.

When we first meet Anna we think her life is perfect. Perfect husband, perfect family, perfect life. But as you read PLAN BEA you find out that she is broken inside and in deep denial. All she wants is a normal relationship with her mother. Her mother has always kept her at a distance and when tragedy strikes the family, her mother pushes her even farther away. Now her mother, BEA, is getting married and wants Anna's help.

PLAN BEA is a heartbreaking look at a mother/daughter relationship that is very real and at times, we can all relate to. All I wanted to do was reach in to the pages and give Anna a hug. When she does some soul searching with her friend, she realizes that she and her mother aren't really that different. Be ready to be totally consumed by PLAN BEA and not doing anything else until you finish reading. The characters and storyline are going to tug at your heart and have you holding your breath at times, waiting to see what happens. I can't wait to read more by this wonderful author. Great job Ms. Grossman!! Five stars all the way!

Life is good for Annabel O’Conner. She has a wonderful, loving husband and two beautiful children. She even has a great career. What would make her even happier? A loving relationship with her mother. For some reason, Annabel’s mother Beatrice wants nothing to do with Annabel or her children. It breaks Annabel’s heart, but her mother is a cold, selfish woman.

Then, out of the blue, Beatrice calls and tells Annabel she’s getting married. She pleads with Annabel to help make this the best wedding ever. She wants to impress her friends and give them something to talk about for years to come. Annabel doesn’t want to do it, but her mother is not someone you can easily say no to. So, Annabel gives her all the support she wants, but nothing Annabel chooses ever seems to please Beatrice. She wonders if she just made their relationship worse by agreeing to this, but she can't get out of it now.

This is a pretty amazing book. This is more than a simple chick lit book. It’s a complex story with complex characters. Readers can actually experience the character’s growth from page one to the very end. It’s jam-packed with emotions and situations readers can identify with. These characters are very realistic and portrayed to perfection.

To my surprise there are family secrets sprinkled throughout the book with an ending that I, for one, did not see coming. I loved every minute of Annabel and Beatrice’s journey. I am delighted to see there is another book coming. This one paved the way for the next book. There is no cliffhanger, just a lead into the next set of characters to get their very own story. I’m looking forward to it. Hilary Grossman has a hit on her hands!

Did I enjoy this book: I really did. This was a fantastic read that had me glued to my Kindle from beginning to the end.

Annabel is a working mom of two adorable children, and she has a wonderful husband. They are living a pretty good life. The major snag in Annabel’s seemingly perfect life is her mother, Bea. Bea is very opinionated, rather stubborn, and sometimes just a bitch. Annabel just wants her mother to show that she loves her and her children. However, there is way more to this story than what meets the eye.

I can’t go into too much about the story itself or the arcs of the characters for fear of giving away some major plot lines. I will say this: Plan Bea is a great example of the fact that everyone . . . everyone . . . has a story, a history. Nobody’s life is easy or perfect as they may lead you to believe. Ms. Grossman does a great job getting you to like all the characters, down to the kids, and she even has a few surprises up her sleeve. I didn’t see them coming. There was a bit of a cliffhanger. Bit isn’t quite the right word . . . When will the next book be out?!?!?!?!? I can’t wait. (Please don’t get me wrong, the cliffhanger does not in any way spoil the book for me. It just makes you want to read more.)

All in all, Plan Bea was a great read. You’ll laugh, cry, hope, wonder, shake your head, and gasp. At least, those were a few of the reactions I had.

Would I recommend it: Absolutely! Any chick lit or women’s fiction lover should read Plan Bea.

"We live our entire lives thinking we know those closest to us. But do we ever really?" This question, posed by PLAN BEA protagonist Annabel O'Conner, is a key theme in Hilary Grossman's second book. Through a narrative that explores what happens when we push away loved ones and leave so many things unsaid, the author takes us on a journey that explores the complicated relationship between Annabel and her mother, Bea, as they try to heal hurts and misunderstandings from their past that has shaped the strained relationship they have when we first meet the two, and we come to understand both of them better through what they finally share with one another.

I found PLAN BEA to be a carefully plotted, well-thought-out book with flashes to the past and backstory at just the right times. It was easy to see the character growth in both Annabel and Bea as they opened up to one another and had to confront the part each of them had played in the breakdown of their relationship. When I review books, I try very hard not to give any spoilers (you'll have to read it!) but I have to say, I didn't see one big surprise twist in this book coming and I absolutely loved it. If you read it, you'll know EXACTLY what twist I mean.

All-in-all, this is a very human book that confronts the complexity of relationships, grief, anger, personal growth, and moving on. The characters are likable—I even found myself liking Bea as I got to know her!—and it's an enjoyable story that will keep you reading through to the end.

Annabel is living a great life. She has an awesome husband and two precious children. Everything seems right in her world except for one little problem. Annabel has a mother that is rude, thinks she knows everything and can make you want to go screaming out the door when she comes for a visit. Why can't her mom be like other moms? The quiet loving nurturing kind that everyone adores. Well as luck would have it, Annabel has Bea as her mom.

I think as I read this story, it made me realize that no one has a perfect life. What may seem like great relationships between family members are really hidden hurt and pain that causes friction at every gathering. The characters are great with wonderful , real emotions that keep readers on their toes. I liked the unexpected twists in the story. To say I didn't see thrm coming is an understatement. The author does an exceptional job of exploring relationships and taking you on a journey you won't forget. I'm hoping for a sequel to this book because there is a tiny bit of unfinished business . I won't spoil it for you, but be sure to pick up this book and enjoy a story that has you laughing, crying and reminding you that not everything is as it seems.

Make Plan Bea Plan A for your reading list!

Anna has a seemingly perfect life. Married to the lovely Cole, with a gorgeous son and daughter, what more could she wish for? Other than the love and approval of her mother, Bea, that is. Bea is distant and aloof towards Anna and the children, until she informs Anna she is getting married and wants her help in organising the wedding. As they are thrown together more and more, the two women gradually open up to each other, and Anna begins to understand why her Mum is like she is. They grow closer and things start to unravel. I'm not going to say any more with regards to plot, but what I will say is that Hilary Grossman had me hooked while reading this clever story. I'm looking forward to her next book. Well done, Hilary. Keep them coming!

Plan Bea is a wonderful women's fiction story that explores the complex relationship between a mother and daughter.

Author Hilary Grossman weaves a poignant tale that follows the strained relationship between mother Beatrice "Bea" Buchanan and daughter Annabel "Anna" O'Conner. Set in Long Island and told in the first person narrative, Anna takes the reader along for the ride as they try to repair their complex and long strained mother-daughter relationship.

With plenty of drama, angst, secrets, and painful flashbacks to the past, the mother and daughter journey down the slippery slope of life experiences, hurt, misplaced love, heartbreak, past mistakes, and a painful rehashing of a traumatic loss, as they try to find common ground that would patch their dysfunctional family relationship. With the help of Anna's husband Cole, Bea's new love Wally, and a host of friends and family, Bea sets a clever plan in motion to win back her daughter's heart and respect. The reader is easily drawn in as the intriguing and unpredictable twist and turns of their reconciliation unfolds.

I absolutely loved reading this story! I am such a sucker for complex mother-daughter relationship stories, and Plan Bea easily captivated me from the beginning to the very surprising and wonderful end. As an only child, my relationship with my mother was fantastic, I couldn't ask for a better person to have as my Mom and best friend, so I found myself intrigued and wanting to find out what the hell happened in their family history to make Anna and Bea's relationship so strained. I have to tell you that in the beginning I was not a fan of Bea's, as the story unfolded, all I could think about was how brutal a woman she was, and that I would probably go bat shit crazy if I had to deal with her, but boy did she pull the wool over my eyes, for you see there was a method to her madness that was pure genius, take my word for it and read how Bea's plan to make amends to Anna turns out, I guarantee that you will be very surprised!

I would be remiss if I didn't mention my favorite quote from the story: "We live our entire lives thinking that we know those closest to us. But do we ever really know them?" This statement is so true, for you really never know what a person goes through or internalizes as they go down life's path. Everyone has their secrets, makes mistakes, and experiences love and loss in their lives, but not everyone is able to share everything with the ones they love.

Plan Bea is a wonderful story of forgiveness, love, and redemption ... it is a poignant story that will tug at the heartstrings and stir the soul.

Anna (short from Annabel) is the mother of two great children and perfect wife. She has everything in her life, her own family, people who love her; even her in-laws love her so much. She has great job and her boss is her friend, but something is very wrong and miss in her life.

But what is it? Her own mother. How that can be? Is she dead?

No! Her mother, Beatrice is very much alive.

Beatrice is very rich woman. She is stubborn and cold woman. She doesn’t care about other people, because she is self centered. Does is she like that or that is some mask?

One night while Anna and her husband Cole were sleeping the phone starts ringing and “guest who?” Beatrice calling. For what? Is someone hurt? No. Beatrice announces that she getting married for couple of months. So she want Anna helps her to plan the wedding.

Of course Anna will help she will do anything to please her. There is a large gap between them for a long time and it seems both of them want to pass it. In that journey many secrets will be revealed and many masks will fall.

I will tell you: What a book! I’m very pleased and happy that I have opportunity to read this book. Thank you, Hillary. Plan Bea is in my favorite books list from now. I love this book!

The story is captivates me from the beginning and I could wait to read more and more. It starts like light and funny story and then when the secrets come out I couldn’t stop myself crying, then the very big twist on the end was so unexpected and very interesting. Maybe I was predicting something, but not that. When I start reading this book I thought that it is one more light and laughing book, but I get wrong it is very profound and depth book. The relationship between mother and daughter is in the center of the story. It’s about how relationship between mother and daughter can be easily broken and rebuild again.

Anna is wonderful person, who could easily love. She can’t say no to anyone, even if that could cost her own peace. When someone asks her something she doesn’t wait just accepts and she always is willing to help.

Beatrice is woman with iron heart, very strong and full of herself. Always things have reason why is that like it is, so Bea has reasons why is like she is, I understand that in the half of the book, when some of the secrets are revealed.

I recommend this book to everyone how loves good book, not just to everyone who like chick lit, but to everyone, because this book has everything that one amazing read can has: great story, well developed characters and twist, which brings in the book excitement.

I have this sometimes very frustrating habit of either deciding I want to read a book either by its cover, or by the author and barely glancing at the blurb until I've started reading. Plan Bea was one such book and as a result, from the first few pages it was clear it was going to have a different focus to it, to whatever I had been thinking. However I am so glad it was written the way it was, as its a brilliant story.

Plan Bea is a story about Annabel's relationship with her mother Bea. For many years they have been almost estranged, and it isn't until Bea meets Walter, that she starts to soften around the edges and talk to her daughter properly.

Bea involves Annabel in the planning of her wedding, and despite Annabel having far too many other commitments, such as her two children, husband and job, she agrees, in an effort to gain her mother's approval.

Bea is a cold hearted woman and has her reasons for being the way she is. During the time Bea and Annabel spend together a lot is revealed, all of which explains the reasoning behind why Bea is the way she is. And as the revelations start to come you can sense a potential for thawing the mother-daughter relationship.

There is a twist towards the end of the book that I wasn't expecting, but its an entirely pleasant one, and fitted the story perfectly.

I found Plan Bea to be written in an engaging way, that is easy to read, and its quite a quick story to read too. The pacing is good, and there was a good selection of characters to like. This was the first book I had read by Hilary Grossman and I can't wait to find the time to sit and read Dangled Carat, as if this is a good example of the authors writing, then I'm sure her other book will be good too.

Thank you so much Booktrope and Netgalley for this review copy. This was my honest opinion.

Plan Bea is a beautifully written story about the bond between a mother and her daughter. Life proves to be more than challenging on any given day with Bea and Anna. In the end, the bond is secured and strengthened as they each learn about each others fears and shortcomings, as well as some hidden skeletons in the closet.

Bea reminds me of Quella Devil with a hidden soft side. She was raised to like the finer thinks in life, but when you stripped her down naked, the only things that really mattered to her were to be loved and give love in return, especially to her daughter Anna and her family. She hides behind her make up, Chanel clothing, Prada bags and country club lifestyle. Her time is precious to her. She soon learns that time is what heals all when love finally finds her. Mistakes were made when tragedy strikes her and Anna’s lives and apologies and forgiveness are needed now in order to make the present more memorable.

Anna wants what every girl wants from their mother – unconditional love and acceptance. Even though she has a wonderful career, is a mom to Violet and Harley and married to Cole who adores her, something is still missing. The past haunts her and the anger and bitterness she is hanging onto, make her more like her mother than she cares to admit.

Hilary takes this relationship and tells a beautiful story of a mom and daughter finding their way back to each other in one of the most momentous occasions in a girl’s life, her wedding.

When I first read the blurb of Hilary Grossman’s second novel, my interest was very piqued. After all, I enjoy her first book, “Dangled Carat,” so I knew I was going to like this one, too. Well, I ended up loving it!

I would love to be friends with Annabel, her husband, and of course, her two little ones. Hilary’s writing is so powerful that I was easily drawn to Annabel’s mother, Bea, even though she was sarcastic and witchy, at times, though, at the end, I understood why.

“Plan Bea” was an amazing book, one I will never forget. With all the twists and turns in this book, it wasn’t predictable, but rather a quick page-turner. If you’re looking for a book that will make you wonder if repairing a mother/daughter relationship is possible, I highly recommend this book. It makes you wonder what you can learn by communicating, especially when secrets and horrible events take place, only to discover that years could’ve gone by without so much pain and hurt.

While I’m blessed to have a wonderful and loving relationship with my mom, I could often relate to Annabel’s feelings, and was happy she had her loving husband and his family to lean on. **Warning, when reading this book, it’s a must that you have tissues next to you. I can’t tell you how many times I cried, and cried, and cried even more.

I give “Plan Bea” 5 stars!

I didn't sleep the night I started reading this book. I've been waiting for this book since Hilary first mentioned that she was writing it. I yelled at Hilary the next morning and told her that kleenex warnings are necessary for her books in the future. (I'm warning all of you now to grab a few...) There were definitely a few things that were relatable and several scenes that kept me guessing. Actually, the whole book had me guessing, and it definitely did not end as I thought it would. Hilary did an amazing job with Plan Bea and I hope she gets the next book finished quick. I'm having withdrawals from these characters!!

I really loved this book. It's more than your usual woman's lit or chick lit. It's the story of a daughter's relationship with her selfish, overbearing mother.

Annabel is the woman that has it all except a great relationship with her mother, Bea. When Bea meets a man things begin to change. The women find they may be more like each other than they thought.

I don't want to give away too much but if you love family drama, sweet moments, and some tears in your book this is the perfect book for you.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. Holy teary eyes! I LOVED this book! The end of Chapter 25 got me (as did the following chapters)! This was a great book about the relationship between mothers and daughters. As with strained relationships with any family member, you wish and hope that they can be repaired but could the damage be too great and the attempt to rekindle be too late? Read to find out this heart touching chick lit - you will thank me later!

A wonderful second novel by Hilary. She captures the complicated relationship between a woman and mother surrounding a wedding, but puts a spin on it by having the mother as the bride. A witty novel that had me laughing out loud many times as I read it, I highly recommend Plan Bea. Looking forward to Hilary's third book!

Annabel O’Conner has a terrible relationship with her mother, Bea, and despite the fact there are many things going right in her life, like a supportive husband, two great kids, and an amazing job, she can't help but yearn for the mother she thinks she should have. One surprise call from Bea, requesting Annabel's help to organize her wedding turns Annabel's world on its ear.  Everything she thought she knows about her mother is has flown out the window. What now? This was a well written story about the relationships between a mother and her child, and the misconceptions that happen over time. Surprisingly, I liked Bea a lot more than her daughter, although she was not the perfect mom she did what she could. Moral of the story - as parents we do the best we can, with what we know and when we know better, we do better :) Great read!

3.5 ★ "WE LIVE OUR ENTIRE LIVES thinking we know those closest to us. But do we ever really?"

I have to confess a few things, first.
One: I love Hilary Grossman. She's super nice and her first book - Dangled Carat was amazing and one of my all time favorites.
Two: She didn't ask me to read Plan Bea or to review it. I did that because of what i mentioned above.

That being said you'll see my problem next. I was conflicted for about 60% of the book, because i didn't like it that much and i kept thinking that i can't write a negative review and what should i do.
But then everything made sense.

So, this is the story of a family. We have Anna, who's married to Cole and they have 2 kids (Violet - who is super funny and smart and Harley, equally adorable). And there's the Bea. Beatrice is Anna's mother, but just on paper. She's a royal class bitch, made of ice and venom.
As i said, i took me 60% of the book to understand why are things the way they are and where's Hilary going with all this.

I'm glad i stick to it and i trusted my instinct, because once you find out Bea's reasons, you get it. You start to feel some compassion and you can also be curious about what's happening next.
I gave it just 3.5 ★ because i feel we should have known sooner what's happening. Also, i love the ending sooooo much. It was simply beautiful.

If you're a fan of chick-lit or contemporary romance novels, don't hesitate to read this one. Just be a little patient and trust me, the ending will be worth it.

Annabel and her mother Beatrice have a very strained relationship. Anna's life looks perfect from the outside, but on the inside she is broken and lost, just wanting a relationship with her mother. Bea comes across as cold, aloof and manipulative, wanting everything and everyone to follow her commands.

We learn that a tragic event is the cause of their rift, and read about it through flashbacks, which flow seamlessly with the story of the present day. That story--of Anna helping to plan Bea's wedding--is full of laughter and tears.

The characters are all realistically written, flaws and all. As someone who once had a difficult relationship with her own mother, I found the situations equally realistic. I was definitely rooting for Anna and Bea to work through their issues and mend their relationship. But if you want to find out whether or not that happens, you'll have to read the book.

At the end of the book, we are treated to an excerpt from the next one, Plan Cee. I am anxiously awaiting its release already.

Annabel and her mother don’t have much of a relationship. After a drunk driver killed her brother years ago, Anabel and her mother became estranged. They have a scheduled phone call once a week to catch up. But when Bea meets a man on a cruise with friends, she reaches out to Annabel for help planning her wedding. While they plan for Bea’s wedding, they express feelings that have been held back for years and begin to heal their relationship. They discover the dark secrets that have kept them estranged since the accident.

There are some interesting twists I guess you could say, but honestly, I just found the book a little boring. Some of it was just hard to imagine. And I found a lot of typos throughout the novel. It is nice to see a novel about repairing relationships, but it really wasn’t for me.

This is one of those books that grab you by the guts and pulls. It was a slow start at first, but worth the effort of pushing through. This is the story of a mother who has erected a stone wall around her heart and her daughter never feeling the love a daughter should get from her mother. What takes place is a slow and steady reconciliation and new awareness of themselves. Really enjoyed the book.

This was a really fun read that I enjoyed from start to end. I embraced the characters and until Beatrice starting changing her attitude I felt like I was reading about my own mother. The reading was easy with the story progressing at a good pace. I look forward to the next book.

I received Plan Bea from Netgalley (my first attempt at using Netgalley!), but unfortunately I didn't enjoy this book.

I was looking to trying a book from the Women's Fiction genre, and saw that this one had nothing but positive reviews on Goodreads, so I assumed it would be a good place to start. Apparently I'm a black sheep!

To me, this literally read as a Lifetime Movie. Every possible tragic event that could possibly happen to one family happened to this family, and they all read as stereotypes rather than characters to care about. The writing seemed so.... robotic. The characters had huge amounts of dialogue that didn't flow as natural conversations people would have in real life.

I got to about 60% properly reading, but for the last 40% I skim read.

Thanks to Netgalley and Booktrope for sending me a copy of this book to review!
