One member of each family will be taken to safety behind the impenetrable fence but, to prevent an uprising, everyone else must be dead before morning. The sacrifice yourself or those you love. Kill or be killed. For fifteen year old Theia, giving up on her family is out of the question so she has twelve hours to stop the horror from descending on her house. The concept of this book is chilling and more than a little disturbing.

In a world where the rising tide threatens to take away everything you know, more heart wrenching things are yet to come.

The people of Middleland have already seen countless countries submerged and millions of deaths due to rising tides, that, against the predictions of scientists, have failed to recede. The Middlelanders now live without electricity, cars, schools and barely have enough food to get by. They await help from the people living behind The Fence, who have built it to protect themselves at the cost of others. These people occasionally send down enough electricity, known as The Surge, so that Middlelanders can hear their broadcasts that promise help and aid in their time of need.

It is these people that offer the Middlelanders refuge into their lands - but at a price. Only one person from each household is allowed entry into their lands. So it basically comes down to the choice of selfishness or sacrifice.

What would you do when it comes down to you or them? Would you decide to sacrifice your place for your loved one, or fight for survival, no matter the cost?

This is a story of family ties, love, friendship and betrayal. It really does make you think about what you would do in this situation and makes you feel horrible at the same time for even considering it. That's the true horror. Be prepared for some disturbing moments and wierd dreams after this one. This book will stay with me for some time, I imagine

This is a disturbing yet compelling read set in a world that is gradually being submerged below sea level. The Lowlands have gone, the Middlelands are about to be wiped out and those in the Upperlands are...smug, which reminds me of today's elite and their vacuous ways and carelessness of everyone but themselves.

The story is written from multiple points of view that give it an in-depth feel for the characters and their dilemmas.

It's a tale of self-preservation in its worse sense because I wonder if the human race deserves saving. It has themes such as power, loss, grief, betrayal, love, sacrifice, greed and self-preservation, and many more.

Overall, it's a very well-written story that is both thought-provoking and awful and yet it's a great read.

Highly recommended.

DWF. So much inappropriate word use (that word does not mean what you think it means). Editors are amazing! More people should use them!
