A cliffhanger ending. It took mea while to become absorbed into this book. The beginning was mushy, and the middle was okay, and the ending was interesting. There isn't a lot of character growth, but there are two more completed novels which may offer just that. What I liked about this story was that it showed that ba things can happen to decent people.

Interesting

Interesting storyline with twists and turns as treachery abounds while lives are intertwined throughout the realm while others try to overtake.

Unique story, good read

I liked the fact that this was not some version of the same old stories that have been coming out lately. Nick is a teenager who've with his blacksmith father. He has his entire life mapped out, but what he doesn't know is that everything is about to change. A senseless act of murder leads Nick to take a life savagely in retaliation. That savagery earns him a place at the arena, where dangerous criminals are sent to fight upon the sands. Most die quickly, some live to complete their sentences to become free men. Nick wins all of his fights to the death and is focused on two things, getting revenge and finding answers. Until, that is, the King's men come to free him and to ask him to fight for his country; indeed the whole world. He agrees but on that same night the king is murdered and all the wing's men must flee. Read the book and it's sequel to find out what happens next!

I just finished reading It Rained Red Upon The Arena by Kenneth Champion and I loved it. It was not what I expected, yet it kept me glued to its pages.

The author has done an excellent job of developing a storyline that was both fast paced and exciting. It included all the aspects of a good fantasy and was very believable and easy to follow. I really liked the way the plot twisted and turned which insured the story never slowed down.

Kenneth Champion's main characters had a depth and strength which made them easy to get into and follow their story. They were very realistic and identifiable. I like how you watch the hero grow and mature as the story progressed.

I really like It Rained Red Upon The Arena by Kenneth Champion and highly recommend this book to all readers.

I gave up after 20% of this book. The writing was simply too bad to continue, which is sad, as I do believe the story wouldn't have been.

I find it difficult to explain what it was that irritated me so, but I'll try.

Champion doesn't manage to paint a picture. He doesn't let the story flow by itself, and describe what is happening. Instead, it feels like a mere listing of things that happen. Sort of when children write. I can see that he's tried sometimes, but he simply doesn't succeed.
Also, the over-use of the names. In a short paragraph, 7 short lines (probably less in a printed version), with only two people, one named and one nameless, you shouldn't have to use the name 5 times. It just gets very irritating after a while.

Anyway, as easy a read as it was, I just couldn't get through it. I was getting too irritated, and had to quit for my own health.
