What is the secret of Dr. Aaron Aikman, aka, Spider-Man? Who are the villainous Red Eye and Naahmurah? And can Aaron possibly live through Morlun's arrival?
I'm quite underwhelmed about this issue. The concept of a cybernetic/genetic Spider-Man that feels more like Cyberpunk SHOULD be right up my alley, and the ideas presented SHOULD have made me thrilled, but the presentation was more like quick story notes and some story-boards that should have been given a run of 5-6 issues just to ease us into the characters and tease us with foreshadowing.
But since we got none of that, it fell flat. I might eventually have become something awesome, but it feels more like a pitch for an idea than a final product, regardless of the fairly decent art.
If Spider-Man was a Manga, I bet this would be his story. A completely self contained story that at this point leads nowhere, with an ending that makes me think there's more. Good art, but I didn't care for this much.
This has, by far, been my favorite of the Edge of Spider-Verse so far. This was a completely different Spider-Man, one I do not know the origin story of, one that I have no connection to, and I fell instantly in love with the setting and story. It was compelling and despite the fact that I didn't know anything about this world I did not feel like I was missing anything being dropped into this story. Great storytelling from start to finish, with great art that kept with the tone of the story. Give me more of THIS story.
I didn't really care much for this issue of the Spiderverse all that much, but it wasn't a complete let down. I still think this Spiderman was a little dense after it delved so much into his knowledge at the beginning and he couldn't figure out who the bad guy behind it all was.
Anyways, it's not complete bad, but it does help set up more of what's going to happen in later issues. This issue and #5 are kind of tied for third place in my book. There's not much I can say without spoiling things.
