[Kozure Ookami] #16

Lone Wolf and Cub, Vol. 16: Gateway into Winter

Rate this book

cover

We are making real progress with the epic revenge story of one man against a powerful clan in medieval Japan. Ogami Itto has bloodied his enemy, Yagyu Retsudo, despite the overwhelming odds against him and the fact that he is accompanied by a three years old child, his son Daigoro. While Itto is in possession of damaging information about the Yagyu clan in the form of a secret letter he has stolen in a previous episode, Retsudo is down to his last blood heir, a daughter, after the Lone Wolf has killed his three sons in sword duels.

Umbrella is a low key episode meant to re-familiarize the reader with the harsh realities of living in a top down, unforgiving society. People in debt are sold to wealthy sponsors where they are treated lower than dirt, insulted and beaten up on a daily basis.

umbrella

Daigoro, left behind in a small alley by his father who is engaged on one of his assassination missions, witnesses a young servant carrying an umbrella over the head of her wealthy mistress being abused. With his usual silent stare, the small boy conveys more empathy and kindness than a thousand words.

Sayaka

Yagyu Retsudo is making one final play against the Lone Wolf by training his daughter Sayaka in a dangerous manoeuvre involving thrown knives during a one-on-one duel. The fact that he uses his own retainers for target practice gives Retsudo no second thoughts. Only victory is important, and timing the move to a fraction of a second, no matter how many bodies are sacrificed.

sayaka

The more cynical reader will already suspect that Itto will find a way to overcome this latest ploy to bring him down, but the moral dilemma still has to play out to its gruesome conclusion.

Clouds of Silk brings into play the raising of silkworms and its relation to the central mystery of the true significance of the Yagyu letter, but not before Itto and Daigoro have to confront yet another band of assassins sent over by the persistent Yagyu adversary. The duel takes place at a shrine over Lake Biwa, and the ninja assassins provide some last breath revelations about the main plot.

biwa

Demon Hide, Demon Seek Yagyu Retsudo is fed up with playing the game according to the rules of bushido. He goes all in in his effort to stop Ogami Itto and issues an official, country-wide arrest warrant for the Lone Wolf in the name of the shogunate.

retsudo

Every local daymio, every person who can give information about the outcast is promised a sizeable reward for capturing him, dead or alive. The great hunt is on, with posters of Ogami Itto and Daigoro going up in every village. The private vendetta has gone public!
Opportunist bounty hunters and local militia are quick to jump into the fray, leaving very few places open for our duo to hide in. Still, few can go against the famous daithonuki war blade and survive to tell the tale.

Gateway into Winter

The prospects for Itto and is son are grim. The high reward for their capture is tempting even the lowest woodcutters in the back country to try their hand at capturing the infamous assassin.

flower

As I have come to expect by now, the series really shines when it combines the background information about the lifestyle in the period with the moral quandaries of duty towards the system against the unwritten laws of human kindness.
The Lone Wolf and his son are truly headed into a desolate winter landscape where everybody is against them. The future is bleak, but I look at how many albums are still left in the story arc and I personally rejoice at the prospect of continuing my journey.

‘Umbrella’: This tale offers us another commentary on the inherent brutality of the class culture that dominated Japan during the feudal era. Taking place completely within the confines of an alley in which Daigoro has been left by his father who is apparently away on business (other than for story reasons I’m not sure why Itto usually takes Daigoro with him on his missions, while in a few cases he will leave him to his own devices…certainly it’s not due to any worry about bringing the boy into danger). Daigoro sees only the peasants whom his father has paid to supply the boy with food and water each day, and a merchant family whose serving girl becomes the focus for both Daigoro’s helping hand and the ire of her masters. Koike and Kojima manage to convey a moving and emotional story with very little dialogue and a small cast of characters, using Daigoro’s mute observation of the world around him as an effective lens to comment on the harsh tragedies that can befall anyone in their everyday life.

‘Sayaka’: Lone Wolf’s martial prowess has nearly decimated the Yagyu clan, only one daughter remains to Retsudo, upon whose death he will be the last of his own bloodline. Will he dare to send her against the skilled assassin when all of her siblings have failed? Well, what do you think? This is Yagyu Retsudo we’re talking about after all! It’s surprising to see the lengths to which Retsudo is willing to go in order to vouchsafe the power and place of his clan even when his very actions jeopardize that clan’s own future. The again given human nature I guess it’s not that surprising at all. Can the deadly O-Tedama technique in which Sayaka has been schooled defeat Itto when all else has failed? Well, there’s still 12 volumes of the series to go, so I guess the answer is clear…still it’s a good tale.

‘Clouds of Silk’: As with the Yagyu, so with the Kurokuwa clan of shinobi: nearly all have been killed by the deadly hand of Lone Wolf and Cub. Can their last stratagem lure Itto and Daigoro to their deaths? Or do the wily ninjas have another plan in mind, one that could lead to the destruction of their true enemy while still safeguarding their honour? The true secret of the Yagyu letter is finally revealed and Itto must race against time and the odds which are being stacked against him once again in order to make use of what he has found.

‘Demon Hide, Demon Seek’: Upon the death of his last child (c’mon it’s not really a spoiler, you knew it was going to happen, right?) Retsudo has finally decided that his last option must be taken: call out all of the forces of Japan’s Daimyo in addition to those of the Shogun in an all-out public war on Lone Wolf and Cub by putting a price on their heads. Now not only must Itto face the shadow warriors of the Yagyu, but the police and bounty hunters of Japan. Can he make use of the letter and it's dearly bought secret before he is brought down by sheer numbers?

‘Gateway Into Winter’: On the run with a hefty price on his head, Itto comes across a poor family of charcoal burners. Will the money promised for the life of the assassin sway the poor family into trying to take down a warrior even the best of the Yagyu and Kurokuwa could not defeat? How will the man who travels the way of meifumado, spurning all social conventions in the process, treat these peasants who only want to better themselves?

While falling short of the extraordinary quality of its predecessor, #16 is still a worthy follow-up despite its credible flaws. Diluting the coherence of the previous offering, we get a mixed bag of stand-alone tales of varying capacities with a few legitimate tetherings to the over-arc tossed in for good measure.

If you’re willing to forgive (or casually disdain) the overabundance of wordless passages (among other flaws), there’s an above average level of goodness here. If your eyes favor a more critical reading you’ll find yourself with something of a flip-book since well over a third of this volume is illustrated (or perhaps diluted) with somewhat meaningless developments which are tied to depictions of equally weak levels of meaning.

In either case, I’m still pretty impressed that such a lengthy series can (and certainly will) continue to carry such a generally superior level of enjoyment.

Herkese keyifli okumalar!

Gateway into Winter is the game changer. Both sides, the Yagyu and Itto Ogami both are prepared to fight each other until one side is decimated. No holds barred, no more hiding, no more secret plots.

Umbrella is the only chapter which is unrelated to the other stories in the volume and the main storyline altogether. I was surprised that it ended that way. It was a one of a kind story. It was neither action packed nor too melodramatic. It was just different. See for yourself.

The other chapters are all Yagyu vs. Ogami related. Retsudo has lost too much in this battle, losing children, allies and hired assassins. He is desperate to solve the matter by retrieving the Yagyu letter and killing the Lone Wolf and his cub.

This starts the third and final act of the whole series, and sets up the theater for the battle that is inevitable. I am so excited with this!

Hmm. It feels like things are picking up far too fast all of a sudden. I'm not even two thirds in and, by how it looks, the final battle could come in the very next volume. I wonder where this goes.

3.5 stars. Stories 2 and 3 weren’t so great, but 1, 4 and 5 were quite potent. An uneven but worthwhile volume overall.

The 16th collection of Lone Wolf and Cub feels lacking compared the prior volume. We lose that narrative tightness and return to disjointed stories again, though there is plot progression even if it feels like a repeat theme and escalation of prior stories: Retsudo wants the Yagyu letter back, sends fighters after Ogami, and escalates the danger by posting a bounty on Ogami and Daigoro. This process of dispatching skilled fighters after Ogami is feeling a bit same.

Umbrella is a sad story about a brutalized girl met by Daigoro. Sayaka is when Retsudo sends his daughter to kill Ogami. Clouds of Silk concerns more mysteries about the Yagyu letter. Demon Hide, Demon Seek is about bounty hunters coming after Ogami. Gateway into Winter is when a group of peasants try to capitalize on the bounty.

ottima lettura.

This was a really solid volume that is pretty much entirely cohesive, with each story moving the main plot with the Yagyu forward. It is really entertaining, but very hard to believe that with the stakes raised and tension rising, there are still *twelve* more volumes.

Like all the other Lone Wolf and Cub-comics, this is absolutely gorgeous. Goseki Kojima draws entire land- and cityscapes with perfectly placed lines and shading. A wonderful feast for the eyes.

Superb entry to sees the war against Lone Wolf & Cub by the Yaygu clan reach a new level as Retsudo tries one, desperate attack before falling back to his most drastic measure. Kazoo Koike keeps the drama coming as the Yaygu approach Ottami & Diagoro on all sides as they race to discover the secret of the Yaygu letter. It is matched by Goseki Kojima's gorgeous, realistic art, depicting feudal Japan brilliantly along with some superb action sequences. One of the best mangas ever.

Teil der Lösung!

Ah!

The last Yagyu heir comes after Ogami - and being female, obviously favours a fighting style which requires disrobing before combat. It would be easier to accept the lack of strong, surviving female characters in the series as historically accurate if they didn't also pull fanservice stunts so readily.

Continue love the story and the plot and be frustrated by the translator. The title of the first story in this volume is _Unbrella_even though it's clearly a parasol, a sun shade not protection from rain. The term is not referenced in the story itself, so this is not another bad attempt at vernacular speech, though there is more of that latter on.
