Up-and-coming chef Natalia Spencer has enough on her plate dealing with a struggling restaurant and a corrupt manager selling her out of pantry and kitchen. She doesn't have time for arrogant customers, even a gorgeous corporate raider in a bespoke suit with muscles that just don't stop. Until, of course, he buys her restaurant and saves her life.
Logan Chase, alpha of his lion shifter pride, is intrigued when the feisty chef kicks him out of her restaurant. He's enraged when someone attacks her. And he's intoxicated when he finally gets close enough to kiss her. But when he shifts in front of her and his lion comes out to play, he risks losing Natalia forever.
Natalia just wants to cook and snuggle with a nice guy. Shacking up with a man who's also a lion means inviting a new level of crazy into her life, along with his unruly brothers, and even her werewolf best friends warn her away. Can she and Logan create a steamy relationship from scratch, or are they a recipe for disaster?
A book about a lion shapshifter, hell yeah im going to read it!
What I thought
I'm sad to say this book disappointed me. First off he only changes into the lion twice plus everything happened way too fast. They only knew eachother for a few days and they're already saying "I love you" and are talking about moving in together. When she didn't even like him for the first couple of days. Sorry but that was almost as bad as instalove. I just wanted more!!! I wanted a slow burn relationship, I didn't want the conflicts to be fixed so easily. I wanted some damn character development! Unfortunately I got none of that from this book, which is sad since this book had great potential . Overall it was an ok read, but it was nothing special.
So, the mechanical writing is fine and I thought the outline of an interesting story was too, but...BUT at one point, in the beginning, I flipped back and forwards between pages and even came to the internet to ensure I had an up to date copy, because I was sure I was missing a chapter or two (or five).
Let me lay it out this way, despite being 130 pages long, there is nothing in the book beyond what is in the blurb, almost literally. Natalia throws Logan out of her restaurant, or at least tells him he can't eat. He then hires her to cook him a meal, her not knowing it's him until she arrives. When she arrives he's already decided to treat her like a mate, she is his mate. There are no interactions between the two of them between the two events and no internal thoughts given to the reader. So, as a reader, I was just like, what? When did that happen? How did that happen?
Then within two days they're declaring love, making plans to move in with each other, etc. There is no development of a relationship AT ALL.
The closest thing to a plot development is her getting attacked. Because of course all women are victims all the time. And the closest thing to character development is the fact that she's been some sort of undisclosed victim in the past.
Lastly, as a major point of contention for me, big cats like lions don't purr. They can't. They don't have the connection of small bones that are vibrated to make the sound. They are literally unable to purr, which made Logan's constant purring a grating inconsistency everytime it happened. I know this is fantasy, so it probably doesn't matter. But I'm pretty sure this is an oversight on the part of the author and an annoying one.
I did like the characters, even the side ones. I thought Logan's confused desperation was cute and his brother gave some very sage advice on more than one occasion. And again, the writing is ok. The book isn't even unfun to read. But it's no where near developed or fleshed out enough to feel real and substantial.
My love for science was really challenged here. If you don’t believe me- ask Sir David Attenborough. 👏 It messed with my head- I understand they are shifters, and there can be some creative writing, buuuut this didn’t add up in my head. Lions cannot purr. It’s only smaller cats that can do that🤷🏻♀️
Nothing happened beyond what was mentioned in the blurb. I missed interactions, I missed character development, and I missed action. We did get a little “tension” with what happened to Natalia, but that was it. The writing wasn’t bad- and it was nice enough to follow, it just lacked a lot of things that I felt missed for me to grant it any higher rating. It also jumped quite quickly to the next without any explanations, but I do think that’s because it’s so short, and the author wanted to add a “full” story. It feel short though.
The insta-love was thick and unbelievable. I don’t hate insta-love as long as I feel their connection. I didn’t here. Not a book for me. And I will not be continuing the series.
Read: 22/10/2019 1st rating: 2 stars Genre/sub-genres: paranormal/shifters/lion/insta-love Cover: 2 stars POV: Dual - 3rd person-(Natalia and Logan) Will I recommend: No.
I liked this paranormal story with a human h and a lion shifter H. The story is told in first person POV for the h and third person POV for the H. There was no ow/om drama, both were focused only on each other from first meeting. Neither were virgins, sexual history not discussed, no bc was used/discussed either.
It is quick paced in terms of him recognizing her as his mate and feelings stated/shared early on. I would have preferred for more background information, esp on the h who clearly had some trauma in her past that's not delved into, and more on-page relationship connection. However, this was a quick, entertaining shifter read. There's some suspense happening with a shady manager of the restaurant the h is the head chef for, which is also where the H and her meet in a really funny/cute scene. I really enjoyed that her reaction to learning about shifters wasn't watered down and felt realistic esp with some emotional will she/won't she accept him. I also loved the H's brothers, who make up the rest of the pride, and who have their own stories. Great steamy scenes and a sweet HFN ending.
I guess after 3 books of her I liked my expectations were a bit high. Unfortunately this book defies all of them. It's the bottom of the barrel of PNR. No plot, no characters worth of this name, instalove so quick that it surprises The Flash. Grating, unbelievable and stupid. A unholy trilogy that was unexpected after the other books.
After a "I've known you 2 days but I love you", "he's a monster who kills people but who cares the morning after let's have sex", at the "they lie to me so he can get me to dinner, no problem" moment I wanted to thrown up. At the end I thought throwing out the book was fairer. At least to me..
I might buy the sequel for the series I started, but clearly buying her back titles isn't wise.
Weak characters, but a fun enough quickie. Shifting sounds fucking awful in this "world" and it doesn't really play much of a role in this story. It's just used as a reason for the h to refuse the H for a while.
Okay this is a new author for me and I did like her storyline however there were a lot of holes in her story which cause some of it to fall flat... For example the author fail to properly introduce her characters, and then her run of subject changes didn't flow well from paragraph to paragraph or from the protagonist's POVs. With these few shortcomings made the story feel rushed with a lack of passion for the two main characters. So sad because this could've been a really good read.
I love our hero Logan, which he is the true epitome of a alpha male/Lion. He did damn there anything in his power to win our heroine over. With his brothers being his wings men they did help him to accomplished this most difficult task.
Now our heroine Natalia, kinda worked my last nerve with her indecisiveness and just being a plain old scaredy-cat (no pun intended). I'm glad she finally got the balls to take a leap of faith and trust the man to love her and give her everything she would ever need or want.
If I had to describe Logan and Natalia story with a song it would be: "Happy" by Surface
2.5 stars. Nothing special. I was extremely annoyed by how hard-headed the heroine was, but then she does a 180 super quick. Everything just felt forced and I didn’t feel even an iota of connection between the MCs.
Also, the writing is just very weird. The heroine’s chapters are written in first person and the hero’s in third.
Safe No clue about either of their pasts No OM/OW at all No cheating Attempted rape on page, but was interrupted very early

Natalia and Logan's first meeting didn't go very well when he sent back his steak at her restaurant twice and she told him to leave. She knew how to cook a steak, it's not her fault that he couldn't figure out that it was perfect. She actually yelled at him which made the guys he was with smile and laugh.
Logan is a lion shifter and the leader of his pride. He and his brothers don't have mates because there aren't a lot of female lionesses around anymore. The lion shifters could soon been in a dangerous predicament if they didn't take mates and start producing cubs.
Natalia was having her own problems in her restaurant with her manager constantly selling or giving away the food so there wasn't enough to make in the restaurant. They weren't making enough money to pay the bills most months so she was really in a bad way and ready to quit and move on if things didn't get better.
Later Logan buys the restaurant from the owners and hires her to make dinner for him and his brothers at his house. The sparks flew between them when she spots him and finds out that he's her new boss. She wanted to throttle him but instead makes the dinner she was hired to make and they talk about the restaurant.
There's some really shifty things going on at the restaurant with her manager and the venders but things really heat up at one point and Natalia is attacked. Logan as well as his brothers come to her aid and Logan is great with her after what she's just been through. They really get close at this time and start making plans to be together, even move in together. Then she accidentally finds out what he is and it scares her so much so that she needs time apart from him which slices him up inside since he knows she's his mate and he feels like she rejected him.
Even though there's a bit of a hiccup in their relationship for a bit, they never stopped caring for each other which helps bring them back together. His brothers are great and I really loved how caring they are. I'm looking forward to reading them get their own stories now.
(RabidReads.com)Sometimes I just want a quick read and Thrill of the Chase fits this bill quite nicely. Lion shifters? Gimme! I liked it so much I have already bought two more in the series. Each book tells a different Chase brother’s story.
In this author’s world building, Lion shifters are dying out. There’s only one lioness left that is of child bearing age, and she’s not a part of their pride. To that end, the brothers meet for dinner at a newer restaurant in a trendy neighborhood to plan for their prides future. When Lion shifter and corporate raider, Logan Chase, sends his steak back twice and asks to speak to the chef, little does he know that his destiny is going to come face to face with him, and then kick him out of the restaurant! Natalia is about the only thing keeping the small restaurant from failing. A Le Cordon Bleu graduate, she knows how to cook a steak and she is just mad enough at the restaurant manager for his misdeeds, that she doesn’t have time for a customer who tries to tell her how to cook his already perfectly cooked steak.
Natalia was a feisty heroine, to say the least. She’s human and knows nothing about the paranormal world. When Logan tricks her into another meeting, she knows she is attracted to him. On Logan’s part, he knows she is his mate, plain and simple. Logan is leader of his pride and the eldest of five brothers-all of them living in a huge mansion. He’s used to getting what he wants and now he wants Natalia.
The author employs the use of a shifter instantly(more or less)recognizing his mate in this story. I have no problems with that because that is part of the nature of shifters. That being said, I think Natalia falls for Logan a bit too fast, and it wasn’t as believable for me. Oh it’s not one of those jump into bed immediately ones, but it wasn’t a slow burn romance either. I did think the way Natalia reacts to Logan as a Lion was one of the most realistic reactions to a shifter that I have read. I can not stand it when a human barely reacts to seeing a shifter shift. So I liked how the author handled this part. Keep in mind, these are not really spoilers-not when you go into reading this knowing it’s a paranormal romance.
Sure shifter romances are a dime a dozen these days. But some do stand out for me and I do have a few favorites. This one was well written, the characters seemed very realistic-regardless of the paranormal element, and I really mostly enjoyed the romance. In addition, some of the brothers really stood out for me and made me want to read their stories. That could have been all, but the author also threw in some suspense and dangerous moments for Natalia and I thought that worked too.
All in all. this whole book worked for me and I read it in one sitting. It had humor, a helping of angst, a few steamy moments, and I highly recommend this to adult paranormal romance fans. Me? I am left wondering how I had no idea this series even existed until now!
I enjoy reading about shifters, but have started steering clear of all books with naked man chests on the cover. Thrill of the Chase is basically a run-of-the-mill paranormal romance (complete with naked man chest). And yet, it hit all the buttons just right, didn't get bogged down in long gratuitous sex scenes, was well-edited, and pretty much redeemed the genre. I especially appreciated how the author didn't try to pad out the book to twice its length, which spurred me on to download book two immediately. Actually, I probably should download book three as well to have on hand just in case....
This is an enemies to lovers novel that only suffers in the fact that it makes the shift way too fast. Typically I don’t say this, but this book could’ve really used another hundred pages. I probably would’ve absolutely loved it then.
It had a good start, but it just lacked the character growth and development that I wanted to make things feel more believable. I don’t even mind insta-love, but the quick shift here just felt unsettling, unnatural, and rushed. Prior to that I was all in.
With some additional world building, and some stronger development of the side characters, as well, I think this would actually be amazing. I almost gave it four stars, because I can see the potential in this. The writing as a whole is enjoyable. It just didn’t quite get there in terms of the storyline. I did enjoy it overall though, and I’m definitely continuing onto the next book.
This wasn’t much of a typical shifter story. At least not the ones I usually take to reading. For me it was missing some climatic plot or exciting sequence of events. This was more romance with paranormal undertones. The bad guy wasn’t really an evil villain with next to unstoppable talents. He was just an ordinary human with nothing to combat a lion shifter. It was just an ordinary love story that didn’t really thrill me with excitement or enthusiasm.
It wasn’t all that hot and sizzling with intimacy or passion either. Most of those scenes were near the very end and didn’t rise to the level of interest one would expect it to be for that kind of scene. It was a dud for me.
Overall, this was just a simple romance that others might prefer over the more intense stories out there.
Not here. Not in my restaurant. "So. Your friends appreciate my work, and yet clearly you cannot. You are welcome to sit as your friends enjoy their food, or you may leave. But I will not waste my time, or my staff's time, preparing yet another meal for you." I turned on my heel and strode to the kitchen, not looking back as the rest of the patrons applauded.
I was thrilled reading this full paranormal for free at Amazon. Unlike some this actually showed sensitivity and didn't bore me with no plot and repetitive sex scenes.
This book was a quick and enjoyable read, despite the cliché "instant love" trope and a few bumps in Natalie and Logan's relationship. They were both strong-willed and no-nonsense individuals, but things changed after Logan saved Natalie's life. The subplot with the restaurant manager was well-done and the side characters, especially Natalie's brothers, added depth to the story. Overall, the backstory of only three remaining lion shifter prides added a bittersweet element.

Other than the fact that the timeline for happily ever after was a week, not counting the month of pouting, this was a good little story. He’s rich as Croesus and she’s talented and brave, how could it not be love at first sight.
Not bad but It goes too far. I get the alpha protector who pays for everything... but to buy her restaurant so she has to cook for him? Really? That's just creepy.

I won't lie this is a low point for me I just wanted to read spicey stuff and landed here. no tea no shade to the book though it is what you expect it to be.
Hot, sexy, alpha lion shifter Logan has his eyes set on Natalia Spencer’s restaurant. What do he have to do to have her also? This was certainly the thrill of the chase for Logan and his pride (lion pride). Fast pace, quiet mystery, and a mating at full tilt.
I saw a lot of less than positive reviews on this story, but I gave it a try, and was hooked right away. It kept me interesting all along the way! The ending, maybe a little flat. But overall, I really liked it.
I give it four stars for being different than the typical shifter story. I've read so many shifter stories by indie authors that are just the same thing over and over again, so this was a pleasant surprise.
I really like that Natalia is a very competent chef and Logan respects that. I could have done with more details, especially what it was he wanted for his steak that made her so incensed. She's also competent enough to fight off an attacker. Although she does get hurt and there is a last-minute rescue, she did a great job of defending herself before the calvary arrived and wasn't a useless damsel in distress.
I would have liked more information on her background and I'd also have liked to see her discuss it with Logan. Obviously it has affected her a lot, so it would be important for her to share with him. Although her part is told in first person and Logan's is in third person, we actually end up knowing more about Logan than we do about her.
Let me just add a pet peeve that if we get her side of the story in first person, I think that Logan's should be in first person as well, or the author should just stick to third person for both. It's very annoying to have to jump perspectives from chapter to chapter, and I'm not even jumping out of one head into another but out of one head into the air!
I did not like Logan's bossiness and I thought Natalia should have given him more what-for when he tried to arrange her life and take over. She's such an independent person that it seemed strange for her to just let him arrange and pay for things without her ever protesting about it. They look for a house to buy and there's never any protest that she can't afford to pay her half of it or anything like that.
However, I did like that he tried to rein in his impatience and aggressiveness around her, and I very much liked how his brothers featured prominently in the story. I always like when characters have friends or family looking out for them and helping them as they muddle along in a new relationship. I really want to read Edgar's story in particular, because Edgar is so rational and calm and stopped Logan from acting impulsively several times (thus saving Logan from doing something stupid which would have pushed Natalia farther away). Edgar is a stellar guy and I hope the author stays true to his character and gives him a great story when it comes to his book.
The big reveal of Logan's lion nature was very well done and Natalia's response to that was believable. But I couldn't understand her mental barrier because once he explained he could control his lion and that he didn't turn violent for no reason, it ought to have assuaged her fears. I felt like the author just wanted to draw out the conflict and there seemed not much point to it. Granted that emotions often aren't logical, but she's drawn to him and that should have helped her to trust him. I didn't like that he had to practically beg her instead of she being the one to seek him out.
Four stars because while I enjoyed the book, I'm unlikely to reread it, so it's not a keeper for me. I'll be looking up the rest of the books in the series, though!
I'm normally very stingy with my 5 stars, a book has to keep me so completely into the story that there is not a moment where I sit back and think... I'd have done that differently, or a woman/man would not react/do/say that. Basically it has to make me believe it within the realm of that world. Which is not easy, because while the paranormal bits are fiction, a human being is not, and human's react to things in a certain way. Layla Nash kept the human reactions and emotions in this realistic, so much so I sat up all night reading and didn't even think about stopping.
So I'm off to read the next in the series and hoping that all the things I loved about this story is in that one too.
What to say? I didn't hate this book but I also didn't love it.
I am a sucker for good grammar etc (not that this applies to my own writings ;) Unfortunately, this book sucked me into the cringe-spiral from hell - every time I had to overlook those random points in the middle of a sentence. It didn't make any sense which only made things worse.
The length of the book - with 180 pages (Amazon kindle ed) - made this whole adventure a short read, but aside from the errors I thoroughly enjoyed it. The heroin wasn't a total whimp or one of those (imo way too often appearing) badass heroines but she had character and she reacted like any normal person in her shoes would - she denied, cried, went a bit crazy and drowned her sorrows in alcohol.
The story wasn't boring at all. Not much happend aside from the main conflict but that's totally okay because I don't expect an elaborate plot with red herrings and side stories. Nope, this was plain old straight to the point.
I wish, the auhor would have elaborated on the brothers a bit, though. I found that the characters lacked... well, character actually. She describes Benedict as the joking type but actually there were many instances in which I missed that apparent trait. The author never elaborated on Carter or why Natalia reacted the way she did. Atticus is practically an enigma. The only other character we know something about is Edgar. And now that I'm thinking about it, we only get a glimpse of what happened to Natalia before she got her job, though, her past plays an important role in the story.
So, yeah, that was my tiny rant for a tiny book that I liked (but ranting is so much easier than praising... life is hard 😉)
The story turned out better than I initially expected (I never expect much from books I got for free on Amazon). However, it was quick, too quick. The relationships can be developed more; they meet, Logan falls in love, and for some reason, Natalia goes from hating him to loving him overnight, which doesn’t feel realistic at all. The book definitely would have benefited from a few extra chapters to work on this.
After Natalia is attacked, we are giving the impression that something like this has happened to her before but the author never goes into details, and the allusion to this event is never brought up again. Like the author forgot to take it out during her edits, or forgot to develop it during her rewrites.
The rest of the plot also should have been expanded upon. I get that it’s a romance but if you bring in other elements they shouldn’t be an after thought. They need to be as developed as the rest. As it stands, I don’t get why Logan was so worried about the loan sharks since they were the ones shaking in their boots. The whole Joey situation was there, then vanished, then there again, and clearly only existed as a way to have Natalia discover Logan’s shapeshifter nature.
A lot of this book can be improved upon and developed better and I would encourage the author to do so. It’s just an okay book as it stands now
>Book review – Thrill of the Chase >I am an independent reviewer. This book is the 1st in the City Sifters: The Pride series and ends in an HEA. Logan is a lion shifter and alpha of his pack. He is worried about the future of his pack, due to a lack of mates. At dinner with his brothers, he ticks off the restaurant’s chef, Natalia, and realizes she is his mate. There is a lot of importance to sharing a meal, or providing a meal for one’s mate, that immediately attracts the pack to Natalia. >Logan does seem a little high handed. He buys the restaurant and then realizes the previous owner was involved in some illegal deals that place Natalia in trouble. The alpha in Logan and his brothers really comes to the fore as Natalia is attacked. There is a scene where Natalia and Logan have dinner. Each of the brothers come to serve a course and pledge their loyalty to Natalia. This scene is so sweet. In this reality, humans do not know that shifters exist. It is quite ironic to realize that Natalia is friends with wolf shifters. > The book is appropriate for an adult audience. I am giving the book 5 stars. The brothers are all unique and interesting. The situation that Logan saved Natalia from was very suspenseful. This is definitely a pride I’d love to read more about.
A GREAT first book to a series that I would definitely recommend!
I have to say that I've never read anything by, Layla Nash before but I am very happy that I came across Thrill of the Chase and look forward to reading the rest of the books in this City Shifters Series. I love Logan Chase and his brothers, as well as Logan's love interest and mate, Natalia. I loved how Logan and Natalia meet for the first time and for Logan, it's pretty much love at first sight. Natalia is an up and coming chef, independent an brilliant in the kitchen, but unfortunately she's working for a manager of the restaurant that is nothing but bad news. Logan makes sure that Natalia is taken care of and protected by the manager after he attacks and violates her. In the process, his anger gets the best of him and Natalia sees for the time what Logan truly is and his lion scares her away. Logan is devastated, loves her and can't live without Natalia by his side forever and Natalia, deep down the same way for Logan, but can she accept him as a lion shifter or will she run away from true love? I highly recommend this book so you can find out for yourselves. I thoroughly enjoyed this book from beginning to end.
It’s my first of this author and I thought it was cute! The idea sounded interesting to me so I started it as soon as I got it. I thought the pace was very fast and I’m not exactly a fan of insta-love when the story doesn’t last a long time, and I didn’t think there were that many moments to convince me of this sudden love fest. Which is why it felt so weird to see her suddenly go 180 but- yeah.
The twist was unexpected, and part of me didn’t know how to feel because of how much I felt for Logan. I liked the brothers, the feel of it, the idea. I liked that, despite it hurting me, she hesitated and reacted so poorly toward a crazy situation. It made it “normal”. To be honest though, I wouldn’t have been as happy if her attitude consisted of majority of the story. I don’t find those kind of storylines entertaining or nice.
I didn’t really enjoy the ending sex because it just seemed so different from the vibes being pushed, but that’s me. I’ll probably check out another book from the series but I thought the writing was okay, even if the putting-together was weird for me.
