Love is in Jersey City as Valentine's Day arrives! Kamala Khan may not be allowed to go to the dance, but Ms. Marvel is! Well sort of - by crashing it attempting to capture Asgard's most annoying trickster! Yup, it's a special Valentine's Day issue featuring Marvel's favorite charlatan, Loki!
Hugo, World Fantasy and American Book Award-winning author of novels and comics, including THE BIRD KING, INVISIBLE KINGDOM, and ALIF THE UNSEEN. Co-creator of Ms Marvel. Honorary doctor of letters, Rutgers University. I accidentally started a dutch baby baking cult during quarantine. Not very active on here right now, but often found on Twitter.
This issue felt like a bit of a throwaway issue, which is totally fair after wrapping up the Generation Why arc. It felt strange that Kamala had no idea who Loki was, especially after going toe-to-toe with Coulson on Avengers trivia in the Agents of SHIELD tie in.
I really wanted to like this, but the premise was too hokey and the art change was too jarring. Both Ms. Marvel and Loki feel underutilized in this short story.
On the bright side, Nakia gets to call the school Valentine's Day dance a "patriarchal capitalist display of fake affection" and Bruno has some choice words for Vick about "friend-zoning."
Loved the story. Not so much the change in art. Perhaps I'll get used to it like I have when art changes have previously occurred within a series. I do love that Loki and Kamala have met. Hopefully, she will get to meet her hero Captain Marvel soon.
all the 5 stars are for Loki! he is so freaking cute love my boy AND ALSO he mentioned thor “you remember my brother” where is the sun shinning for them?????????
This was fun. It’s just a fun one-shot type story. Loki was a super fun addition to this story and I liked the Valentine’s Day setting. We also had some great moments with Kamala and her friends and I really love those.
This issue is a bit more laid back after the issues from the previous arc but still one with a great message. It's nice to see a slightly more laid back issue after teens getting kidnapped and giant machines smashing up buildings.
This time we see Loki coming down from Asgard to try and help find out more information about The Inventor. Naturally this being Loki, God of Mischief things don't exactly go over well leading to a confrontation with Kamala as Ms Marvel.
Thankfully things end well enough and Ms Marvel leaves with the words that while Valentine's Day is supposed to be about romance, other types of love such as friendship are just as important. This fits in nicely with a comment Mio makes earlier when a friend says he's just be "friend zoned." To which Mio firmly replies that friendship is not a zone and is real and good.
In a world where rejection is sometimes met with violence, abuse, or retaliation of some kind, it's good to see this topic addressed in Ms Marvel.
This was a nice and welcome change of pace from the last arc. However, I don't doubt that things will be heating back up soon enough.
This is the first time I've ever rated a Ms. Marvel comic anything lower than four stars! Which surprised me. This issue seemed a bit...random? I felt like this was just a filler issue. Which makes sense with the Generation Why arc ending its run but I went into this completely expecting it to become one of my favorite issues (Kamala and Loki in the same story is guaranteed badassery!), but sadly it just wasn't the case. Loki is one of my favorite villains in the Marvel Universe so I expected this to be completely epic but I was a bit let down. However, I did enjoy the fact that Kamala is starting to explore the concept of love. It was very sweet and added a lot to the story. Overall, I still really enjoyed this! Do recommend!
Also, Bruno's thoughts on the friend zone is so much yaaaaaaas.
Ms. Marvel just keeps on getting cooler and cooler. Kamala Khan can seriously do no wrong in my eyes. And now we add Loki to the mix and oh wow, hilarity ensures. This is a series that is both heroic and yet doesn't take itself entirely too seriously. Kamala is still very much a teenage girl learning how to negotiate her new superpowers all the while dealing with her parents expectations.
So I have to admit, for reasons even I don't understand, Loki is one of my favorite Marvel characters (it might just be the bleed-over from traditional myth; who knows). So, add him into a comic, and then add in the perfection that was his interactions with Kamala, and I'm head-over-heels for it. This made me damn happy -- though also so sad for Bruno!
And mainly because the introduction of Loki doesn't seem to lead to much but to some gimmicks and fun punches and fights. Hopefully this is a transition issue into the new adventures that await Kamala.
This issue really shows how important an artist like Adrian Alphona is on this title, because the title suffers in his absence if he is not replaced by a decent artist. Don't get me wrong; the guest artist is not terrible. But he is not nearly as talented as Alphona and just not very well suited to the aesthetic and tone of the book.
