Harry Bosch teams up with Lincoln Lawyer Mickey Haller in the new thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly.
Detective Harry Bosch has retired from the LAPD, but his half-brother, defense attorney Mickey Haller, needs his help. The murder rap against his client seems ironclad, but Mickey is sure it's a setup. Though it goes against all his instincts, Bosch takes the case. With the secret help of his former LAPD partner Lucia Soto, he turns the investigation inside the police department. But as Bosch gets closer to discovering the truth, he makes himself a target.
Michael Connelly decided to become a writer after discovering the books of Raymond Chandler while attending the University of Florida. Once he decided on this direction he chose a major in journalism and a minor in creative writing — a curriculum in which one of his teachers was novelist Harry Crews.
After graduating in 1980, Connelly worked at newspapers in Daytona Beach and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, primarily specializing in the crime beat. In Fort Lauderdale he wrote about police and crime during the height of the murder and violence wave that rolled over South Florida during the so-called cocaine wars. In 1986, he and two other reporters spent several months interviewing survivors of a major airline crash. They wrote a magazine story on the crash and the survivors which was later short-listed for the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing. The magazine story also moved Connelly into the upper levels of journalism, landing him a job as a crime reporter for the Los Angeles Times, one of the largest papers in the country, and bringing him to the city of which his literary hero, Chandler, had written.
After three years on the crime beat in L.A., Connelly began writing his first novel to feature LAPD Detective Hieronymus Bosch. The novel, The Black Echo, based in part on a true crime that had occurred in Los Angeles, was published in 1992 and won the Edgar Award for Best First Novel by the Mystery Writers of America. Connelly has followed that up with over 30 more novels.
Over eighty million copies of Connelly’s books have sold worldwide and he has been translated into forty-five foreign languages. He has won the Edgar Award, Anthony Award, Macavity Award, Los Angeles Times Best Mystery/Thriller Award, Shamus Award, Dilys Award, Nero Award, Barry Award, Audie Award, Ridley Award, Maltese Falcon Award (Japan), .38 Caliber Award (France), Grand Prix Award (France), Premio Bancarella Award (Italy), and the Pepe Carvalho award (Spain) .
Michael was the President of the Mystery Writers of America organization in 2003 and 2004. In addition to his literary work, Michael is one of the producers and writers of the TV show, “Bosch,” which is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
Michael lives with his family in Los Angeles and Tampa, Florida.
Goodreads is behind on this novel. I just finished reading the entire book but this is the closest item in the Goodreads' bookshelves. It was a very well-written story featuring a character I've grown to like. The one detraction for me was that the two bad guys were over-the-top baddies and therefore not particularly credible, especially given their profession.
After reading 19 of Connelly's books through the years , I can say that he can sure tell a good story which are not tall tales but are so real. Bosch is one of my favorite characters in novels in the mystery genre. How can you not love him. He cares what others think, the police dept. his daughter with whom he always feels he makes mistakes. He cannot stand it when Justice or the Truth are not served and in this case a heinous crime committed and an innocent man accused. Bosch leaves no stone unturned in his investigations and that is the fun in following his thinking. The title is interesting as Bosch is felt by his police comrades as crossing to the other side as a defense investigator for his half brother, Mickey Haller after being pushed out of the Dept. There are other crossings here also, a murdered woman who had crossed into a wrong place, and two cops who had crossed over to the dark side.
I read this entire book and don't understand why I can't find it on Good Reads. It was published in 2015 and our local library had a copy where I checked it out. Oh well, but for whatever reason, just go out and read this book. It's a thriller from start to finish, and I have to say, this was Connelly's best book to date. It combines the tenacity, ethical code, and dedication of Harry Bosch with the hard working, publicity seeking, lawyer responsibility of his half brother, the Lincoln Lawyer. It's a must read.
I actually listened to this book and enjoyed it a lot. Who doesn't love a good mystery!? I liked the unraveling of clues in a murder case that actually led the detective to think one of his own colleagues was the killer. Not everything can be worked out in an hour, like on tv, but it takes a skill to recognize and put together every minute detail and nuance one comes across. I'm a mystery lover, so this was a nice addition to my book shelf.
I love the Bosch series on Amazon so I picked up a book from my library. I loved it. Of course, I kept imagining Titus Welliver as I read the story. Compelling read
