Simple Gifts #1

A Simple Vow

Rate this book
Housed in a rustic red barn, the Simple Gifts crafts shop celebrates the talents of the Amish of Willow Ridge--and the faith that inspires them. For the acceptance of simplicity opens the path to love.

As far as Edith Riehl is concerned, the baby twins thrust suddenly into her arms are a heaven-sent gift. Unable to conceive, she longs to be a mother with a home of her own. She's going to abide by her promise to handsome Asa Detweiler to take care of them while he looks for their real father. And even if her domineering dat Cornelius refuses to countenance Asa's suit, she can only pray the bachelor's honesty and persistence will uncover the truth--even as he's kindled an impossible hope for a love of her own . . .

Asa can't understand why anyone would think he would be so dishonorable as to father babies and then abandon them. He's determined to clear his name--but Edith's caring ways also inspire him to help heal her wounded spirit and earn her trust. In the face of heartbreaking deception, he and Edith must find the strength to understand, forgive . . . and claim their own hearts' joy.

Drawing upon her experiences in Jamesport, the largest Old Order Amish community west of the Mississippi, longtime Missourian Charlotte Hubbard (a.k.a. Naomi King) writes of simpler times and a faith-based lifestyle in her new Seasons of the Heart series. Like her heroine, Miriam Lantz, Charlotte considers it her personal mission to feed people—to share hearth and home. Faith and family, farming and food preservation are hallmarks of her lifestyle, and the foundation of her earlier Angels of Mercy series. She’s a deacon, a dedicated church musician and choir member, and when she’s not writing, she loves to try new recipes, crochet, and sew. Charlotte now lives in Minnesota with her husband and their border collie.

A well written Amish story with nicely developed characters and scene settings. Heartbreak, hope, lies, honesty, redemption, community ties and forgiveness are recurring themes throughout. There was even an unexpected twist towards the end.

So, I started the Simple Gifts series with the third one and loved it so much, that I went back to read the first two. I loved this series and will definitely look for more from Charlotte Hubbard. There is a wedding happening in Willow Ridge and Edith is hurrying to attend when she stumbles upon two Amish men arguing. She stops to calm them down when she hears a baby crying, actually two babies. Edith steps in to comfort the children and confront the men. The men, Will, her sister Loretta's ex-fiancé and another man that Edith does not know, are arguing over who is the father of the babies. She later learns the handsome man is Asa Detweiler, the man who the babies' mother, Molly, said she would always love, with her dying breath. Molly was Will's wife, and had recently died from cancer. Will leaves the babies with Edith and heads home to sort out his life. Edith falls instantly in love with the darling babies, but what will happen when her father finds out she has taken over their care.

I love the characters, both Edith's relatives and her friends. Everyone pitches in to provide support and give the family what they will need to raise these babies. Of course there is some romance in the story and Edith has to deal with her father Cornelius. He is the one character that I disliked immensely. He is rude, demanding, hypocritical and obnoxious. His three daughters are saints to put up with him and follow the commandment, "Honor your father and mother". I enjoyed meeting Nora and finding out about the store, Simple Gifts. This was where the Amish Crafters were able to consign their wares and make money. Eventually Edith and her sisters would all be involved with the store in some way. Just when I thought I had everything figured out, there was a huge twist to the story. It threw Edith and Asa into a situation that they would have to deal with and see if they could overcome it to have a life together. I listened to this book and was very happy with the narration by Susan Boyce. It is calming and felt like I was right there experiencing the story. I am so glad I went back to listen to this book and look forward to the second one, A Simple Wish.

A Simple Vow

Charlotte Hubbard

Wow! A SIMPLE VOW by Charlotte Hubbard has just blown me away. So much mystery and suspense and that is not what I'm used to when reading Amish books. Charlotte Hubbard is quickly becoming one of my favorite Amish authors and A SIMPLE VOW is exactly why. She had me guessing who the babies father was all along and when it was finally revealed, I was shocked.

Edith Riehl happens upon two Amish men arguing all the while, a baby is crying and they aren't concerned at all. Well, Edith steps into the buggy to comfort the upset child only to discover two babies, not one. She grabs them both and goes to confront the men. She is shocked to learn one of the men is Will, her sister Loretta's ex-fiancé. The other man, Edith does not know, but she can't help notice how handsome he is. She later learns he is Asa Detweiler, the man who the babies mother said she would always love, with her dying breath. Will was married to the babies mother, Molly. You can only imagine the conversation Will and Asa are having.

A SIMPLE VOW is the first book in Charlotte Hubbard's new series, Simple Gifts. Charlotte includes characters from her other series and you can't help but falling in love with them all. They are lovable and forgiving people and quickly, they become your old friends. If you are like me, you will be plowing through the pages quickly. You have to know who the father of the twins are and how Charlotte is going to bring this story to an end. The twists and turns will keep you from doing anything else besides reading this heart warming story.

Just when you think you have the mystery solved, A SIMPLE VOW takes a turn you never saw coming. My heart was breaking for Edith and Asa and the sorrow and disappointment they were feeling. Paternity tests are discouraged so how is Asa going to prove that he isn't the twins father? Will anyone believe him? Will the community of Willow Ridge stand beside Asa or will the turn their backs on him? I can't wait to continue with this exciting new series.

It was a great to catch up with beloved characters in Willow Ridge, along with new members of the community, reading Charlotte Hubbard's new release, A Simple Vow. A Simple Vow is book one in her new series, Simple Gifts. Charlotte is a talented author weaving her plots with real to life characters. A Simple Vow is focus on Edith Riehl's verbal vow to care for infant twins because it was unclear who the father was.

Will Gingerich and Asa Detweiler were arguing when Edith heard an infant crying. Will Gingerich's wife had spoken Asa's name on her deathbed when she had given birth six months earlier. Thus Will assumed Asa was the father of the twins. Will had married Molly without knowing she was pregnant. He wanted answers and had accused Asa Detweiler of his immoral behavior with Molly. Will and Asa both wanted an answer to who fathered the twins, as Asa assured Will he did not know his wife Molly.

Asa and his brother, Drew, lived in another community but moved to Willow Ridge as Asa fell for Edith when she made the vow to care for the twins. Edith and her sisters, Rosalyn and Loretta, did not have it easy. There deacon father, Cornelius Riehl, was demanding and controlling. Will Edith be able to keep the twins since Cornelius had caused Loretta's engagement to Will Gingerich to be broken?

There are so many twists and turns throughout the book. I was surprised when the identity of the individual who caused so much trouble for Asa Detweiler was revealed. Will the guilty individual be able to find forgiveness among his family members and others?

A Simple Vow is filled with characters that are true to life. Characters that are forgiving, compassionate, struggle with their flaws but filled with faith and love along with determination to see the best in others. Some characters you will want to chastise, others your heart will break with their sorrow and disappointment. Charlotte Hubbard did not fail in delivering another fantastic book. I look forward to reading the next book in this series to see what is happening with the residents in Willow Ridge.

WOW!! Charlotte Hubbard had me guessing as to who the father of the twins was. Boy was I shocked and floored when he was revealed. I totally did not see that coming!

"A Simple Vow" is just that a simple vow, aka a promise. Not a secret, but a promise, a verbal contract. Edith Riehl is going to keep her promise to care for the twins as Asa Detweiler looks for their real father.

Overall, I loved this story that Charlotte Hubbard has written in "A Simple Vow". This shocking betrayal is not often written about in the Amish genre, but we all can us a lot more material on forgiveness, as this book also provides.

I hope Charlotte writes a follow-up some how about these twins; that was the one thing that saddened me when the book ended, wanted more story to read. I look forward to reading more of Charlotte Hubbard's books in the future.

**On a side note to read Charlotte Hubbard's first book written of the Amish of Willow Ridge in the series of Seasons of the Heart. I was able to follow along and not lost in reading "A Simple Vow" for not having read the series of Seasons of the Heart first.

I received a free copy from NetGalley with the only request to write an honest review about the book. No money was exchanged. This is my review written in my own words.

A SIMPLE VOW is the first book in Ms. Hubbard's new series Simple Gifts. This book doesn't read like the a first book in a series though, more like a continuation of a previous series since I recognized many of the characters. I think they are from the Seasons of the Heart series.

Some of the other reviewers commented about there being too many characters. Since I have read all of Ms. Hubbard's previous books I recognized most of them. Asa seemed a very nice young man, kind, considerate, and willing to go the extra mile while Will seems the opposite. I did feel for Will, losing his wife to cancer and then getting blind sided by his wife calling another man's name as she is dying and saying her twin babies aren't her husband's! Then Will is virtually disowned by his wife's family and the community, all claiming he must be less man since his wife was unfaithful.

On the reverse side, Asa claims he never even knew Will's wife, and he certainly didn't father them! How will the Amish prove who is the rightful father if paternity tests are discouraged? And will the real father step up to his responsibility?

Edith and her sisters are more than willing to help out the poor abandoned twins, and even start falling in love with them. The community at large is also happy to step in and help with the babies even if they won't have anything to do with either Asa or Will. I had to admire the girls willingness to help, but it bothered me that their father didn't want anything to do with the babies and was quite disagreeable to everyone involved.

I had to keep reading to see how this story would end. Who is the father? Will Edith always be involved in the babies lives? Will her father come around? A story with a lot of twists to keep the pages turning. Unforgettable Amish fiction 3.5 stars.

Being a huge fan of all of Charlotte Hubbard's books set in Willow Ridge, I was thrilled to receive a complimentary copy of this first book of a new spin-off series from NetGalley.

While I loved revisiting many of my old friends in this book, I found this one a bit slow to get going. There were hints of mystery and intrigue throughout the first half but I couldn't really see what they had to do with the story. Until I hit about 70%, this book was set for a three-star rating.

But wow! What a twist and turn-around! Not only did the author do a fantastic job bringing all the seemingly random plot elements together with some shocking developments, but she also brought some real spiritual depth with themes of forgiveness and reconciliation without strings the way Jesus would do. I was so glad I had stayed with this book, and I'm now really looking forward to future ones about these new characters!

Mysteries aren’t the only genre with twists. Author Charlotte Hubbard has penned a charming Amish tale of romance that’s anything but average. Edith isn’t looking for romance, but she finds it and more. A former suitor of her sister’s shows up with infant twins, wanting Edith and her sisters to care for them since his wife has died, and he says he can’t care for them for a while. Edith takes charge of the situation, but it comes with consequences. The story is quite interesting, and most of the characters are endearing, the exception being the sisters’ grumpy and controlling father, but all the characters are well developed. It’s a compelling tale, and one that will have readers reaching for the next book.

Could you see yourself taking in twin babies that are no relation to you and to care for them with limited questions asked? Edith Riehl does that very thing when she interrupts two Amish men arguing over who is the father. As Asa and Will determine to find the real father, an accident delays Asa's leaving of Willow Ridge. During his stay he finds himself falling head over heels in love with Edith and day dreaming of being a family with her and the babies. Can Asa make his dream come true or will a deep dark secret ruin his dreams?

I am enjoying seeing writers of Amish fiction stepping outside of the box and writing more about real life problems we all face no matter if we are Amish or "Englishers". At the beginning of this book we learn that the babies mother had relations before marriage and tricked her husband into marriage. We all know how common this story is to the "English" world but rarely hear or read about it in the Amish world. Hubbard does an excellent job of tackling this difficult story line while maintaining the strong Christian values of Amish life.

Even with the sensitive subject Hubbard is able to tell the story without explicit scenes or language. If you are a fan of Amish fiction but want more meat to the story line pick up a copy of A Simple Vow today. I think you will enjoy.

The second book in the series, A Simple Wish, comes out on September 26, 2017. I'm looking forward to seeing how this series progresses.

Side note: If you have read The Seasons of the Heart series, the Simple Gifts series is a spin-off taking place in the same town of Willow Ridge.

I know little to nothing about Amish community besides when I see their communities nearby or the other versions that live near my parts. I find them somewhat fascinating and a change to dig my teeth/claws into such glimpse was something I did not want to pass up. And I must say Charlotte Hubbard quickly became my favorite Amish author and this one book was exactly why along with Hubbard's sweet nature to me leading up to myself receiving this wonderful gift. I have pictures of when I received them floating around to which I will gather

This book is the first of Hubbard's new Series, SIMPLE GIFTS which she includes characters from other series. I instantly fell in love with them, to which you would too, and getting lost within the pages as I did. To the point you finish the book and are gasping trying to find more pages!!! Like NOO this CAN NOT be the end!?!? -Exact quote as I scared my dear step daughter when I finished this book-. She was all interested and I gave her the "explaining this book to a almost five year old edition." She loved it!

I love Amish fiction and was excited to find a "new to me" author in this genre. This book was a solid story for that genre.
I loved the connectedness of the small town and who doesn't love babies!
This is the first in a series, but obviously all the characters were in another series - there are SO many of them and a complicated story to go with each of them which made getting into the book hard at the beginning.
I was missing a more Amish feel that usually comes from the Pennsylvania Dutch language that was in short supply here. Also, there was little mention of services, no mention of singings which the young sisters in this book would have been a part of. I also found the acceptance of so many different backstories in the people by the Old Order Amish to be unrealistic. Ideally, there would be places like this, but I don't think they really exist.
There was the mystery over who the babies were fathered by, but unlike most of the reviewers below, the answer came as no surprise to me.
A pleasant book to spend a few hours reading, but nothing special.

I enjoyed this trip back to Willow Ridge. Though this series focuses on the Riehl sisters, newcomers to the town, I was pleased to see several wise and familiar faces among the secondary characters!
Though I did think that Edith and Asa's romance came about perhaps a touch too quickly, I did appreciate that they were firm in their love and trust in each other despite some HUGELY unexpected and unwanted circumstances. That steadfastness is a good example for all marriages.
I do think that my favourite part of the book was the reminder that forgiveness and grace should be extended to the one(s) who has wronged us, even in advance of any repentance on their part. That was definitely something I needed to remember.

This is the first book that I read by Charlotte Hubbard and I definitely loved it. It had a few twists that I didn't expect. It was a little different than most Amish fiction that I have read, but it still was filled with God's direction and snippets of scripture throughout. I now want to finish the series of 3 books. I would love for anyone who loves God or Amish Fiction to read this wonderful book about forgiveness.

I've gotta say, it takes a LOT to surprise me in an Amish novel, and the twist near the end was not one I saw coming! It was lovely to get to go back into the world of Willow Ridge, I loved the previous series and getting to see the characters again was awesome! Edith and Asa were a lovely couple, it makes me hope someday I'll get to find that someone special. Hey if it happened that fast for them you never know!

This book caught me in the very beginning but as it went on, I found myself not interested. But then things start to unravel and while most of them were predicted by me as I read, I liked this book. The end hand me in tears and let's just say, I am happy how it resolved.

My romance genre interest certainly has a huge range...from hot & steamy to Amish! Lol I enjoyed the sweetness of this unrealistic story...in the current time when the world is insane, it is good to escape into a book where the world is better, the people are better!
