Mortality Calls

Rate this book
MORTALITY CALLS is a murder mystery that follows the tragic and moving story of a man trying to rebuild his life after the simultaneous murder of his wife and the apparent kidnapping of one of his 11 year old twin daughters.

Kit Peterson is a 48 year old American actor who has skirted the big time but never quite made the A-list. He has fired many guns as an actor but never in real life. And yet the brief prologue finds Kit possibly in the process of shooting someone dead.

Chapter 1 cuts back in time to a point three months after the murder of Kit's wife and the apparent kidnapping of one of his twin daughters: Jess.

Unsurprisingly, Kit is not in a good place. He is broken by what has happened to his family but also wracked with guilt at not being at home when the murder took place. At the start of the novel, he has fled Hollywood and the family home, unable to work; he now finds himself living with his parents on the east coast. The only thing that gets Kit out of bed is his commitment to his surviving daughter: Ellie.

Kit hires a local counsellor to help Ellie (Mel): someone who was a big part of Kit's life in his teens and early college years. Their mutual friendship is slowly rekindled throughout the course of the novel.

Things are further complicated, though, when, out of the blue, Kit is contacted by someone calling himself Bob: a man who claims to have Jess.

Ultimately, the novel leads to the nerve-wracking denouement of Kit's showdown with Bob and the discovery of whether Jess is truly still alive.
