Quake Keep: Book I of The Black Moon Chronicles

Rate this book
The humans on Quake Keep’s staff are but one of four dozen intelligent, language and tool using species on the massive and magical world of Yooba. Garrison consisting of three hundred pound bipedal lady leos led by a huge, four-armed gorillian, the skies are patrolled by their lightning-laced cloud dragon allies who guard against the crag dragons, stone giants and ogres who prey on unwary travelers in these rugged, unstable mountains.

Along with dragon wrestling, a drunken ogre festival, a cloud and crag dragon competing for the love of a dimwitted demigod made of stone, his thunderstorm commanding half-brother and conniving bog goblin pal, rival moon goddesses dueling through their pets, a lusty aquatic nymph, an uptight dryad, a runedoor that turns people to dust and a haunted dungeon packed with potent magic weapons, there is action, intrigue and black humor at every turn in Quake Keep. Yet it’s really about what we do when doom comes a calling.

Born a human slave in the brutal mines of the Whirling Desert, Ivan escaped from his sandragon masters. Now the page of the Quake Keep Commandant Yryl, a moonelf-foxili blend sorceress who is also his lover, he stumbles on magic boots and a belt when sent to fetch something else from the ghost-ridden dungeons. Housing magic weapons between wars, they and the wicked devices will be dusted off with the Imperial Sandragon Army headed up the Crumbling Road. Guarding the only pass through the earthquake ravaged Tumultuous Mountains, Quake Keep is the gateway to Ooliphant, an ancient, vast and wealthy melting pot of a city that many bipedal species and their exotic blends call home.

To weak to make it home, the elderly human witch Gresel must be rescued lest the sandragons torture her for details about Ooliphant or the Commandant turn her charged bones into wands. Tasked by the moon goddess Moofluna, her demigod son Grog Agog and the mischievous bog goblin Tet Snailbiter play pranks and stir up trouble en route.

Already on death’s doorstep, Gresel insists that they rob the dungeons for magic items to help defeat the sandragons. Riding in on a cloud, Grog’s brother Torfulgar Rainmaker reveals that Ooliphant has been abandoned by its starfarer founders. No longer shielded by their atmospheric and cosmic magic, and other enemies sure to try to take Quake Keep on the sly before the sandragons even arrive, Torfulgar, Ivan and Yryl must set a trap.
