Tom Angleberger artist-turned-writer. He is a columnist for the Roanoke Times in Roanoke, Virginia, and began work on his first book while in middle school. Tom is married to author-illustrator Cece Bell. He lives in Christianburg, Virginia.
Read this with my seven year old. I found it funnier than the first. President Horse G Horse reminded me of a certain someone. See if you can guess:
When the President is asked to take down a large statue if himself in order to save the world he replies, "Nope you stupid plant. And I'm the President, so you can't make me! So HA-HA! So find some other way to save the city, the country, and the world. I'll be busy taking photos of myself holding my salt and pepper shakers next to my limo parked under the statue of me!"
First sentence: My phone rang.“Hello,” I said. “Flytrap Detective Agency.”A slow voice started asking me questions. “Is this . . . Mr. Flytrap?” “My name,” I answered, “is INSPECTOR Flytrap. I am a detective. Do you have a THRILLING mystery for me to solve?”
Premise/plot: Inspector Flytrap and Nina the Goat are back for their second adventure in Angleberger's wonderfully wacky world. President Horse G. Horse is revealing a new statue of great importance...at least in his eyes...a giant statue of himself....but after Nina's unfortunate snacking...the town finds itself in great danger. Can Inspector Flytrap SOLVE the case as to why a GIANT VENUS FLY is tormenting the town???
My thoughts: I enjoyed this one. I did. It was fun. It was wacky, silly, whimsical, over the top. I love Nina the Goat. She's a scene stealer for sure. I do recommend this series. But you might want to read the Inspector Flytrap series first. If you've read the other books set in this universe, well, these first entries might be less satisfying. [Didi Dodo has three books and DJ Funkyfoot has three books.]
inspector flytrap doesn't really save the whole world............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
The second book in the Inspector Flytrap series I did not enjoy as much. This had more silliness in the plot. My student kept saying that it is "inappropriate for school" based on the humor. I am still going to read the last one in the series but I was disappointed with this book compared to the first one.
My youngest daughter really enjoyed the first volume, so I quickly went looking for any additional books and found the second volume at our local library. I spent no time busting it out after work so we could sit and dive into this sequel. I will say it was enjoyable and while I did not enjoy it as much as the first volume, it was a solid entry that has me excited to read the next one. The President of the United States appears all throughout this book and is an interesting character that you get to know pretty well in this book. I think when sitting and reading straight through it will take you an hour, but what an enjoyable hour you will have if reading with your child.
“I’m trying to become the the greatest detective that ever grew!”
It’s not easy being the world’s greatest detective when you’re a Venus Flytrap, but Inspector Flytrap gives it his best shot. But when the President of the United States calls and asks Nina to be at the Capitol Building at noon, Flytrap becomes involved in a mystery and then a national emergency that might just make his name famous, if only the President could remember what his name is. Is it Mr. Spyflap? Flyblap? Claptrap? Flyball?
My boys are huge fans of The Bad Guys by Aaron Blabey. We decided to give this series a try after it was recommended to my boys. I have to say that these books are very funny and punny. The humor is perfect for elementary aged boys. They thought the elevator to the President's statue's rear end was hilarious as well as the idea of a giant alien fly looking for a giant pile of poop. I found this book to be even more hilarious than the first. It was a fun read aloud but would also be great for beginner readers starting out with chapter books.
This is zany and odd, and just really not my thing. But, I think for the right emergent reader, who loves over the top silliness, puns, and is just moving into chapter books, this series would be a good choice. The illustrations are fun, and I like having another beginning chapter book mystery series to recommend. While I won't read any other Inspector Flytrap books, I will definitely recommend them to kiddos in the library!
98 pages. Humorous story when Inspector Flytrap takes on a new challenge to rid the earth of a most notorious Venus alien fly - of gigantic proportions! Nina the goat is eating everything in sight. This one has very funny illustrations. Boys will especially like this series. Highly recommended Gr. 3-5.
This is a wonderful second volume to the series. I think my son loved most the crazy names the President called Inspector Fytrap. Keep writing. I imagine a non fiction study of Venus Flytraps is in our future!
I didn't really appreciate the irreverence toward government... but also I don't really think any of the politicians on either side of the aisle are upstanding examples for the general population... anyway, this was goofy like the last one.
