Don't miss the Metal Men's adventures against The Clique, living mannequins, an ancient god, at the Department of Motor Vehicles and more. Plus, from SILVER THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #1, the team meets Batman, Green Arrow and Black Canary! some issues are available individually online.
Well found in discount bin, but maddening, in that for the ten-page backup stories reprinted from Doom Patrol 1-7, the poor art scans interfere with the quality printing. No such trouble with first story, written by late, great Bob Haney. But Maguire's fine line artwork in print suffers for poor scans.
You know, when you see Giffen and Maguire's names, that the Stooges are back in business (I'm not sure if DeMatteis is supposed to be one of the three or just a later addition). The humor you've seen in JLI, the excellent facial expressions, it's all there. And now it's the Metal Men, who get the treatment. I'd imagine this might get tiresome in larger doses (it certainly did for me with their JLI run), but in shorter pieces it definitely works well enough for me.
Exactly what you would expect from the team behind JLI!
Its good stuff. Its funny, the jokes most of the time hit, there are a few misses but the good overwhelm the bad. The comic is character-driven rather than plot-driven but even the plot has its qualities. And of course the art is beautiful, the expressions are spot on and the colors vibrant. The problem was the fill-in artist in the middle that cut the arts cohesion, but even that artist was good and quite similar to Maguire's style.
Also included a Batman/Metal Men team up which is a Silver Age homage. Its good too.
Best thing of the Book: The introductions of the creative team in each issue of the main story.
