The son of the sun is searching for a wife, and since earthly women who cannot fly are unsuitable, his father approaches the moon, whom he has heard has a lovely daughter. But the daughter is young, and the moon whisks her off to hide her with an elderly couple who have never had a child. With them, Vanishia, as she is known, grows and flourishes. But how will she escape the renewed attention of the son of the sun?
Holly Young Huth has artfully adapted this powerful, almost mythic Saami tale with its unusual tragic conclusion, as Vanishia finds herself in love with one of the Brothers of the Northern Lights.

When I was a 5 year old waiting for my younger brother to be born, bored and mischievous with nothing much to do after the school term ended, my dad took me to a bookshop one day and surprised me with a load of Soviet books for children. One of the most memorable events of my childhood. Needless to say the following weeks were a few of the happiest I can recall (including my baby brother materializing, I had always wanted one).
This book in particular was very different from all others. The art, the story, the style - all of it. At the age of five I didn't quite understand all of it, just felt angry at Sun. But I understood that just like we have the myth of the "chander buri" with her spindle to account for the dark spots visible on the Moon, this was a Russian version.
I almost forgot about this, but I think this is the book that also probably the first that told me about the Northern Lights. I understood what the brothers of the Northern Lights reference meant a few years later though, while re-reading the book, by then I had encountered the Aurora and learnt about them so the reference made interesting sense. :)
