Very gripping and unputdownable. Lilli Palmer sure had a skill of telling a story.

Sadder than sad, bluer than blue, that was this book, thru and thru... No poetry intended.
I watched a movie about these famous horses in Austria at the famous Spanish riding school. It was set during the war and the movie was very good. Lilli Palmer was a star in the movie and I was intrigued by her so I looked her up. Well, she wrote a couple of books. So, I wanted to read them...
I read that this is somewhat autobiographical. It is a dark story and I wanted to find out how it ended. I didn't really enjoy the book because usually an author allows the reader to come up for air and laugh a little. I don't recall that at all. And yet, there are profoundly immensely sad heartbreaking books that I love. I can't put my finger on it.
The characters are all selfish and self absorbed except for L. Maybe that's why I didn't care for it. Also, I read in one sitting. Now, I'm off to find a happy story!

This was a quite a sad novel, following the memory of a tragic woman's life. I don't know why but it reminded me of the novels Rebeccaand Out of the Picture.
It was a lovely read even though I don't normally prefer a read like this.
The basic plot is a woman, reading the diary of her late best friend and reliving a time in her life that was almost too painful to bear or even think off.
