It’s the contrast between the unrelenting, high octane suspense and the excruciatingly slow burn of romance. That’s what it is about this author’s writing. Of course you get that a lot in these kinds of books, but Sandra S. Kerns does it so well. The crime here is complicated and deeply woven through the cast of characters. This is a damned fine police story. The action starts with the witness to a murder unconscious in an ER, our hero by his side, our heroine nursing them both. Unravelling what happened is a great read… The romance is between a strong, positive, yet damaged, woman and a tough, gritty man who is all heart and impatience. Expertly drawn, these two have you feeling that slow burn and living it with them. I was particularly pleased with how things came together at the end – the way the hero took charge… Excellent romantic mystery/thriller.

Who is the patient under Nurse Brooke Collins’s care? Why would the police falsify his death certificate and remove him from hospital without authorisation? To get the answers to these questions you just have to sit on the roller coaster with Brooke Collins and enjoy the thrilling ride. You discover that even organisations meant to uphold justice are guilty of misconduct. I could not wait to turn each page to see what happens next!
An accomplished writer, Sandra Kerns, does not disappoint with the the seventh book in the Masters Men series. I must admit I haven’t read them all but that did not in any way stop the flow of the story. There is mystery and there is romance around a plot that is thoroughly intriguing. A very enjoyable and entertaining book, you will not be disappointed!

I was anxiously awaiting the release of this book, and I wasn't disappointed! The action was intense, the mystery intriguing, the love story touching - it was everything I have come to expect and enjoy from the Masters series. My favorite aspect of this particular installment is related to what I loved most about the book I read while waiting for this one - Dream Stalker. In that story Ms. Kerns takes us on a fascinating journey into the world of a mentally ill man. She successfully achieved a conflicted response to the character - I was disgusted and horrified, but at the same time sympathetic and hopeful that he would find the help he clearly needed. In this story we don't have any mental illness (with the exception, possibly, of the culprit we discover later in the story - what a piece of work!). We do, however, get a thought-provoking lesson on the effects of trauma/abuse. I like how our main character, Brooke, is a strong, independent woman, yet even those commendable attributes can't save her from the polluting effects of doubt and fear after suffering a traumatic event. Bravo to Ms. Kerns for her attention to the psychological detail of the human condition; it's that "little extra something" that has me absolutely loving her work!

This one has everything you expect in a great romance novel! First, the hero is ridiculously sexy. Like, makes-you-wish-you-were-in-danger-on-a-high-profile-police-bust, kind of hot. The man in uniform gets me every time, and this one has a rough and ready backstory to match. The heroine is easy to love too; she's the friend you always wish you had, and her selfless care for others comes through as one of her most charming qualities. "Her Master Protector" does a masterful job building the suspense of the story, even as the chemistry between these two reaches a fever pitch. (Mini-spoiler just to let you know: you will not in fact be reading in detail how they are together in bed... however much you might like to. Readers, you have been forewarned - you will have to use your imaginations for that!)

I dived right into this story and kept turning those pages faster and faster. It's an engaging, fast-paced read, with plenty of interesting and well-developed characters weaving together along the way. Of course, the highlight will still be Brooke and Manus, and their sizzling, budding romance. Highly recommended!

A tough cop determined to solve a murder. A compassionate nurse who puts her life on the line for love. “Her Master Protector” is a story filled with mystery and budding romance.

Manus Laughlin is a hardened detective who will stop at nothing to solve a murder mystery that, at first, seems to be an open-and-shut case. After an exchange of violence and gunfire, Manus is transported to the ER where he meets the determined and beautiful Brooke Collins. At first, the two characters clash in a heated battle of wills—Manus sets his mind on solving the crime and bringing those who have committed murder to justice. On the other hand, Brooke is adamant on watching over Manus’ health and tending to his wounds sustained in the attack. As the story progresses, the case becomes more and more complicated, throwing Brooke into danger. What appears to be a generic case turns into a murder mystery filled with intrigue and corruption. Can Manus trust the police department? Will his heart soften enough to trust the woman he has sworn to protect?

Although this is a “clean” romance compared to other books, Sandra Kerns creates strong sexual tension between the two main characters. The physical attraction between Manus and Brooke is undeniable, but will they set aside their differences to fulfill what they truly desire without losing focus on the murder investigation that threatens them both? The author leaves readers wanting more! 4 Stars (Copy supplied for review)

The opening pulls you in right away. Who is this patient fighting for his life? Why was Nurse Brooke Collins assigned to watch over him? Why was he so important? And so the mystery begins. Manus Laughlin takes his job as a cop seriously, and the stranger was an important witness to a case he's working on. He will do what he can to protect him. As he visits him in the hospital, he's reunited with Brooke. There's not-so awesome history between them but they were brought together when Brooke's life was threatened.

Strong sensitive heroes, real-life stubborn heroines, these are the type of characters residing in the books of Sandra Kerns, and you will be able to relate and root for their story. Kerns is not a mushy writer, which is how some writers think romance novels should be written. It's fast paced, realistic, crisp and you'll just keep turning the pages and gobble it up.

Although part of The Masters Men series, this is a stand-alone, and can be read on its own. But after getting bits of info on the Masters Men, Brooke's elder brothers, I think I'm going to try the other books too. They sound.... delicious. :)

Sandra Kerns never disappoints.

Alright, you should know going in that this book has Master in the title not in the bondage sense but because Masters is the name of a family in this series of books. It's not Fifty Shades of Murder. This is the last of the series, but the characterization and writing are so good that I didn't have any trouble jumping right in to this one. It's kind of fun to discover a series at the end, because you've got a whole lot more books ready to go without having to wait. On its own, this is a fun and satisfying ride. The main characters are both strong, smart, and adorable. They work together to protect a witness, solve a mystery, and keep each other physically and emotionally safe. That teamwork makes for a very enjoyable book.
