Hemlock #3

Willowgrove: A Young Adult Paranormal Romance―The Riveting Hemlock Trilogy Finale of Werewolf Experiments

Rate this book
Perfect for fans of Maggie Stiefvater’s Shiver or Andrea Cremer’s Nightshade, Willowgrove is Kathleen Peacock’s riveting conclusion to the Hemlock trilogy. This final entry in Peacock’s dark, romantic, paranormal suspense series pits friendship against survival, and trust against love.

Ever since Mac’s best friend, Amy, was murdered, Hemlock has been a dangerous place. But now that Mac, her boyfriend, Kyle, and Amy’s ex, Jason, instigated a mass breakout from Thornhill, a werewolf “rehabilitation” camp, the danger has only grown. Fear of the infection spreading is now at an all-time high and anyone with a scar is suspected of being a wolf.

What makes Mac even more afraid, though, are the dark experiments that the warden of Thornhill was performing on wolves in a secret asylum called Willowgrove. Uncovering the truth about what happened may be the only way for Mac to save everyone she loves and end her nightmares for good.

I spent my teen years crushing on authors and writing short stories about vampires. This is also how I have spent a good slice of my adult years—although the vampires have been replaced by werewolves, angry girls, and ghosts.

Five things you might want to know:
-- I am Canadian
-- I am unlikely to survive the first few hours of the zombie apocalypse
-- I grew up on a steady diet of Stephen King, Doctor Who, and science fiction movies from the 60s, 70s, and 80s.
-- I have a weakness for romantic comedies with abysmally low Rotten Tomatoes scores
-- I am occasionally a university student

ALL THE STARS IN THE WORLD <3 <3 <3 I love love love love loved it and it breaks my heart knowing this is the end.

FULL REVIEW

I can't even begin to describe my love for this trilogy (if you don't believe me, read both my reviews of Hemlock and Thornhill!). This review will be spoiler free because I want people to know that this trilogy as a whole did not disappoint in the least bit and that the third and final book was everything I wanted it to be! Thank you so much Kathleen Peacock for creating such a refreshing take on the paranormal genre and werewolves. The Hemlock trilogy contains everything I love: Mystery, thrilling pacing, friendship, a fantastic romance, and a kick butt main protagonist. Don't think this trilogy is just a typical paranormal, it contains all that I mentioned in a winning blend.

Willowgrove did not disappoint at all. I was never afraid of it being a disappointment, I was afraid of some possible outcomes that Peacock could write in Willowgrove. However, I loved everything about Willowgrove.. even the scenes that made me bawl my eyes out. I had to take a break, cry my heart out, then get back to the book. I love it when authors paint their world and the events in it realistically. Not everything gets their happily ever after and not everything miraculously gets fixed. That's life (even if it is a non contemporary world).

The characters make up this book. Mac, Kyle, and Jason. Those three are just so freaking amazing. I love love their friendship, even when it is screwed up, they still manage to love each other unconditionally. Even when it seems like one of them is lost to the rest, they manage to bring each other back. It is truly a friendship to be envied and admired. The love interest (It really isn't a love triangle but I still won't say who because that would be a book 1 spoiler), is just so so sweet and I love him to bits. Mac and him are just the most adorable couple and their romance is just so lovely. It truly restores my faith in YA romances. You guys know how many are underdeveloped or turn to be the main focus of a non contemporary book. However in Willowgrove (and whole trilogy) all I wanted was more of them and the three friends too. Not only that, but two other characters, Trey and Serena also stole my heart.

The paranormal aspect in this novel is woven into the novel so naturally. Lupin syndrome is a disease that turns humans into werewolves (shape shifters). There are concentration camps and just so much fear and hatred towards werewolves. Some of our characters are werewolves. Mac's best friend, Amy, was killed by a werewolf. That was the setting to book one. So I didn't spoil anything for you. I just loved the development of the story from Hemlock all the way to Willowgrove; it is very thought out and I was gasping left and right at all the reveals.

I can tell you to pick up Hemlock based on many things, either the friendship, the paranormal aspect, the plot progression, the mystery, the fresh take on werewolves, the romance, or even the side characters. There is just so much to love about this whole trilogy as well as the concluding book, Willowgrove. I personally did not have one thing I disliked about Willowgrove. So this point seems like a good stopping point. I am so so very sad that there are no more books to look forward to. The ending was so satisfying but I would still love novellas about some characters *hint hint*. I will definitely be reliving this world soon because I can't stay too much away from the Hemlock world <3 Thank you so much Kathleen for writing such memorable characters and books that have become one of my favorite books I ever read.

5/5 full moons

I had started to think maybe there were never reasons for the horrible things people did

I do not know how much time has passed since the Halloween night I started this trilogy but I know that since then, a lot of things have changed in my life. I've grown, I've learned tons of new things, both about myself and about other people, and I've lived a great amount of feelings, both good and bad.

That's what this book symbolizes for me. Growth. Growth, and bravery, and acceptance of life and death and that things may not always be right but if you don't fight, you'll never learn what can happen.

And I am grateful, for all the memories this trilogy gave me. For all the times I found myself worried about Mac's safety as I followed her in her trip, the times I screamed, or run a hand through my hair in shock, or cried, or laughed, or felt pleased or utterly terrified with the turns the story was taking. For all the times I wished I was there for all of them and their struggles, their trauma and their broken hearts, who they learned to heal together.

I am grateful for the beautiful writing, and the story of a world of humans and werewolves, a story of learning to see the beauty in things, to accept the different and to stand up for what's right. I am grateful for the inspiring characters, with their struggles and their fears and their biggest hopes and I also happen to be grateful for the powerful bonds. Between lovers, between friends and between family.

I am grateful for what this trilogy taught me. To always find my way in the dark. To never hide the truth, and never hide my feelings. To keep my head high and never give up. And to always accept my wild side.

I am extremely grateful for the feelings and the memories of hiding under my blanket and reading until my eyelids were heavy like lead. I am grateful for the strength these books gave me, and the strengthening of my love for werewolves, because you guys know how much I adore these fantasy creatures. I am also grateful for another series that will make me nostalgic when I think about, another thing I will miss and another fandom.

And since thanking is what grateful people do, I will thank everybody who worked to bring these to life
And also the characters, for taking a part of my soul and giving me a part of theirs ♥

P.S I am still bitter about my favorite character dying but I am also proud for how far he went

Read this, guys
And be free to love, and live and accept. And howl at the moon ♥

Willowgrove by Kathleen Peacock
Book Three of the Hemlock series
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Publication Date: January 6, 2015
Rating: 4 stars

Summary (from Goodreads):

Willowgrove is Kathleen Peacock's riveting conclusion to the Hemlock trilogy, a dark, romantic, paranormal suspense series that pits friendship against survival, and trust against love.

Ever since Mac's best friend, Amy, was murdered, Hemlock has been a dangerous place. But now that Mac, her boyfriend, Kyle, and Amy's ex, Jason, have investigated a mass breakout from Thornhill, a werewolf "rehabilitation" camp, the danger has only grown. Fear of the infection spreading is now at an all-time high, and anyone with a scar is suspected of being a wolf.

What makes Mac even more afraid, though, are the dark experiments that the warden of Thornhill was performing on wolves in a secret asylum called Willowgrove. Uncovering the truth about what happened may be the only way for Mac to save everyone she loves and end her nightmares for good.

What I Liked:

Oh my gosh. OH MY GOSH. Wow. You guys. I don't even know how to express my feels. This book was... amazing. So much heart-pounding awesomeness, so much nail-biting, so much page-flipping. I couldn't finish this book fast enough, and yet, I didn't want it to end.

Mac, Kyle, and Jason are all back in Hemlock - but things are tense in the town. Serena has not recovered from her ordeal in Thornhill, and even though rumors of Sinclair's death are going around, no one can trust anything. Amy might be the key to it all - if only she were still alive...

Again, wow. I don't even know how Peacock could make this book even more epic than the previous books. Hemlock seemed like a murder mystery book, a whodunit. But then Thornhill really amped up the tension and craziness in the series. You'll recall my review of Thornhill, in which I called the book one of the best sequels I've read. It really set up the scene for an epic final showdown - the conclusion novel.

The mood of this book is so, so tense, scary almost. I was terrified for Mac and Kyle and Serena and Jason at almost every page. It felt like at every chance, someone was being separated from someone else, and I was just SO SCARED of no one coming back together. Mac was too, so it wasn't just me. Peacock did a wonderful job of keeping me on the edge of my seat - I just HAD to keep reading.

I really like Mac. From beginning to end - of the book, and the series in general - her character grows and flourishes. She'll do anything for Kyle, but also for Serena, Jason, and her other friends. Mac is so smart, do determined, so pigheaded sometimes. She isn't perfect and everything isn't always black and white with her, and I love this characterization.

I seriously love the romance, in this particular book. I was worried in the first book because it really seemed like Peacock was pushing a love triangle at readers, but book two changed my mind, and this book really sealed the deal. Kyle and Mac are a fabulous couple.

Kyle isn't just a fantastic love interest - he's a powerful and memorable protagonist. He's kind but also intense and protective, and I love those traits, balanced with Mac's selflessness and stubbornness. Heck, both of them are really stubborn, and it really works between the two of them.

I wondered how Peacock would approach the overall issue of the book - werewolf rights, I'm calling it. Nationwide, werewolves are not accepted. In this book, so many secrets are uncovered, about the camps, the lupine disease, the history behind it all. Peacock drops secret after secret, twist after twist. I loved it!

Peacock also dialed up the blood and guts and death and injuries and craziness. Seriously, I was so afraid that everyone would end up dead or something. Bodies. Blood. Everywhere. Which really lent to the authenticity of the situation - it felt like the world was ending, honestly. The riots, the National Guard coming to Hemlock, the looting... it felt like a revolution, but like, one that could very well happen today. So realistic!

In the end, things wrapped up... interestingly. We get a lot of resolution, in terms of Mac and Kyle, Mac and her father, the whole werewolf rights thing, Sinclair, Serena, Jason... Peacock hits just about everything, whether "happy" or "sad". Personally, I'm pleased with the ending - not saying whether or not it was a happy one or not, but that I'm very satisfied with it. Peacock write a very great and realistic ending to things, and not just the ideal, optimal ending.

I want to say more, specifically, but this is a conclusion novel... and I shan't not spoil things! But guys, this book was awesome! Seriously!

What I Did Not Like:

Hmmm, I can't *really* think of anything at the moment. I'm sure there must be something, since I'm a strong believer in the no-book-is-actually-perfect thing, but I can't think of something. So.

Would I Recommend It:

YES! If you've made it this far, then for sure, read this book! If you've read at least book one, KEEP GOING!! It only gets better. This is probably my favorite of the three, then book two, then book one... not that book was bad by any means!! All three are SOOOO good. And this is coming from the girl who was originally hesitant to read book one, because at the time, there were so many "werewolf"-related books publishing, after Twilight. So. You should read this series. Like now.

Rating:

4 stars. I love this series! Potentially one of my favorites. Also, hey, look at me, finishing another series! Woot! And it was a good one!

Because I didn’t review the previous two books in the series, this review is especially hard to write since I have to say everything I get only one shot to say everything I want to about this amazing seris. Can a review ever be sufficient to express one’s love for not just one book but for an entire series? I don’t think so but I am going to give it a shot anyway.

I put off reading Hemlock for a very long time. I had had my eye on the series for a long time (since 2012 to be precise) but I was too scared too pick it up because of the supposed love triangle (emphasis on the supposed bit). Nick, being lovely, assured my poor nerves that I had nothing to worry about and while that soothed me some, it wasn’t until I saw the final book on Edelweiss that I decided that it was finally time to dive in.

Boy, I had NO idea what I had been missing out on. This series is the PERFECT comfort series. It reminds me of a couple years ago when I went through the paranormal phase and encountered so many great series. The Hemlock books remind me of the Darkest Powers books in particular what with the secret testing and conspiracies.

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves though. Let’s start at the beginning, with Mackenzie. Mac is a fabulous character and I adore her to bits. She is a strong female lead who won’t back down and is stubborn. Sometimes, her stubbornness is dangerous but I, for one, never felt as though her stubbornness lead her to do things that made me want to shake her. Sometimes, I did think she was a little too selfless but then again, when it comes to the ones you love, you’re going to do whatever you can to keep them safe. I did like that she didn’t push them away though. She didn’t think she could do this all on her own. She asked for help when she needed it. She wasn’t too scared to ask it and let her friends make the choices instead of making them for them and telling them it was too dangerous for them to do something.

Kyle, our love interest, was fabulous throughout the first two books and while he was just as swoon-worthy in this one, I felt like he just didn’t get as much of an opportunity to shine. I would definitely have liked to see a LOT more of him and perhaps see him and Mackenzie function as a couple. This book was definitely Mac’s book and it was more about her than it was about Kyle or Amy or Jason or anyone else.

Going back to the romance bit, you can tell that Mac and Kyle are very much in love and I love that there is very minimal drama in their relationship. There was a certain event that didn’t  do much for me (*secretly rages*) at the end of Thronhill but I feel like there is a certain strength in their relationship because they both know they are the one for each other.  What made me sad was that there relationship wasn’t explored as much as it could be. Considering how fantastic their romance was in Hemlock, I kind of wanted to see more over the course of the books. We had a lot of tender and sweet moments but they didn’t really ‘work together’. The worked to protect one another instead of towards a common goal.

Peacock definitely takes her time developing the plot over the course of the three books and none of the books ever were rushed or developed too slowly. Peacock paced them just right. I never really saw that twist coming when the truth was revealed in this book. It didn’t feel like it was unpredictable, it just never occurred to me that the author might decide to take her story down that road. If there had been a little more clues in the previous two books, it might not have felt so sudden but it definitely worked in context of the story so I didn’t feel like it was out of place which is important.

This book is brutal. There are deaths and we don’t like deaths. They are mean and sucky and I am going to go curl up underneath my bed (that’s my favorite spot if you guys haven’t realized by now).

I was a little disappointed by the epilogue. It felt nice to know where the characters were after the events that would have followed the ending but at the same time, there were still some questions I had and considering there had been a two year jump, a lot more questions so the epilogue, instead of making the series feel complete did just the opposite.

In the end, this was definitely a great conclusion to the series and if you still haven’t started the series and ventured into the world of Hemlock, I have no idea what you’re waiting for. Get on it and remember, Kyle is mine.

It is so very hard to say goodbye to a trilogy that over time you have become so invested in but I knew if anyone could answer all my questions, tie up all loose ends, and still stay true to the storyline and characters, then Peacock was my author.

And she did do all of these things and she did them brilliantly.

I have loved this series from the very first page. It is riddled with everything I look for in a good YA paranormal read without being cliché or so been there done that. If I am being honest this is probably the series that really got me interested in werewolves not only in YA but in adult books too.

While I wasn't expecting a happily ever after for everyone, I was expecting some closure and a world that would some how be more understanding of those infected with LS and while there was some heartache in the story and death of certain people, it was all very believable and done well. The storyline stayed true to the rest of the series while still giving Mac room to grow, make mistakes, and learn how to love and trust and I loved seeing it happen, I loved seeing her grow and change.

I won't get into any detail because I don't want to spoil a single thing but I am very satisfied with how this ended and super excited to see what else Peacock will come out with next. I just love her writing and the world that she created in the Hemlock series and I know great things will be in store for us with whatever she writes next.

*My Thoughts*

"Everyone always sees more than they remember, and sometimes people see things they're not ready to accept."

Willowgrove is the final installment in the Hemlock trilogy. It has been nearly a month since Mackenzie Dobson, Kyle Harper, Jason Sheffield and Serena Carson returned from the Thornhill rehabilitation camp. Coming home they find that their hometown of Hemlock, where everything started with Amy's death, is now being swarmed by Trackers, the anti-werewolf hate mongers.

It's always so hard to say goodbye to a series because it's like saying goodbye to group of friends you have gotten to know over the course of the books. It's especially bittersweet to say adieu to the Hemlock trilogy because it's one that I started very early during my blogging years. While I may be upset, I firmly believe that Kathleen Peacock gave readers an ending that was hopeful and memorable with Willowgrove.

Like I said, I have grown very emotionally attached to these characters. I've watched them go through one obstacle after the other, but I am so proud of them for everything they have accomplished. Mac, as a main character, has especially grown throughout this series. In Willowgrove, you could tell that she was no longer that sad and grieving young girl that she was in Hemlock. She had found a positive outlet for her grief over her best friend's murder. I truly admired her for her resilience and her positive attitude through every hurdle she had to jump over. Kyle, her love interest, continued to flourish as a character as well. I loved he too had become tough and had accepted who he was at the core. We saw him struggle considerably with his identity over the past two books, but in Willowgrove, he was a different person, tenacious and secure with what he was. Kyle has always been a sweet guy and he never wavered from that personality trait. You can't help but fall in love for this beautiful boy and his kind heart. The secondary characters too really shined in Willowgrove. I was especially impressed by the development of Serena's character. She had gone through hell in the second book and she was still fragile from the events, but with the help of Jason she slowly started to get on her feet. Speaking of Jason, he was one character I struggled with a few times during the series, but he too has grown to become a much more decent person and I was proud of who he had become.

The plot in Willowgrove took some time to gain its momentum, but once it did, it was fast-paced, gory and terrifying. Kathleen Peacock really did not hold back with the deaths and bloodshed. My heart was racing so fast throughout Willowgrove, worried about what would happen to these characters I had grown to cherish so much. The author did manage to punch me in the heart multiple times and it left me teary eyed. We also learn a lot more about the lupine disease that struck the town and there were some horrifying moments. Never have I hated the villains so much as I did with this series and I wanted nothing more than to watch their downfall. The romance between Kyle and Mac was super sweet as well. It was one that grew slowly in the first book and while it's had a few down moments, Mac and Kyle have been supportive of each other and they have worked together to jump through many of their problems. There were times during this series where I worried that a love triangle would pop up, but Peacock makes sure to eliminate every doubt in the first book itself. Kathleen Peacock is a really talented author and she has the ability to write some very compelling stories that grab your attention from the very start. I also really liked how she was able to put real life themes into this book, primarily discrimination, and she tackled them very aptly.

A werewolves story that is compelling and gripping in multiple ways, the Hemlock series is not one to be missed out on. As a trilogy ending, Willowgrove was satisfying in every way. I can't wait for more by Kathleen Peacock.

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie Tales

Quick & Dirty: Fun ending to an entertaining series. There were parts that felt a little repetitive of the first two books but overall this was a great read!

Opening Sentence: SHE SWEARS SHE CAN HEAR THE ECHO OF STRANGLED sobs and slurred shouts—every sound made under the roof while he was gone—as she stands in the empty hallway.

The Review:

Mac lives in the little town of Hemlock. Life was quiet and pretty simple until Mac’s best friend Amy was murdered by a werewolf. Ever since the murder the town has been unsettled and the danger is starting to escalate. Years ago werewolves didn’t exist, but somehow the Lupine disease came about. If you are bitten or scratched by someone with the disease you will become infected and turn into a werewolf. For the most part those that are infected can control themselves and they can live a normal life, but uninfected people are afraid of the disease spreading so there is a war brewing between the two races.

There was recently a massive breakout at Thornhill, a werewolf rehabilitation camp. Mac, her boyfriend Kyle (who is a werewolf), and Jason, Amy’s ex-boyfriend, were the ones that helped orchestrate the breakout. They feel that werewolves are being treated unfairly and they want to try to stop the fight that is coming. They know that being in Hemlock is dangerous especially for werewolves, but they get new information about Amy’s death that could lead to how the Lupine epidemic was started. This information could possibly produce a cure or better yet, it might be able to prevent werewolves and humans from going to war!

From the very first time I met Mac I instantly liked her. She has gone through a lot in her short life and watching her handle everything gave me great respect for her. She is a smart girl and she doesn’t give up easily when she sets her mind to something. She is also a very caring person and the people in her life mean the world to her. She also has flaws that made her a more realistic character and easier to relate to. I didn’t feel that she grew as much in this book as she did in the previous books, but I still liked her as a character.

Kyle was just a sexy as always. He is such a great guy and the lengths he goes to; to protect Mac is very endearing. Becoming a werewolf was really hard for him and he is still trying to adjust to his new life. One of the great things about Kyle is that he is consistent, yes he has gone through many changes but he is still the same guy and he will always try to do the right thing. His relationship with Mac is adorable. I love that they started out as best friends and became something more. They have great chemistry and I think that they complement each other very well.

Jason is the hot rich boy that likes to party too much. He has had a rough few years and instead of taking care of his problems he tends to run away or make stupid decisions. I will admit that I liked who he became in the final book but I really wanted more for his character. For most of the series and especially in this last book it felt like he was the third wheel. He is a love interest for Mac in Thornhill and I was expecting that to develop more in Willowgrove but it really didn’t. Don’t get me wrong I am totally team Kyle, but I think Jason deserved more of a chance with Mac then he got.

Willowgrove is an action packed ending to a very fun series. I really enjoyed the story and world that Peacock created, she had her own unique twist on werewolves. I think that the characters were well developed and easy to like, but they were a little forgettable. There was less romance in this book, but it was still sweet and very well written. From the very beginning there is tons of action and the book is very fast paced. While I did enjoyed this book I will admit that I thought that it felt a little repetitive of the previous books in the series. I can’t really pinpoint one part or moment that was repetitive but the overall feel of the story just seemed a little too similar to the first two books. The ending wrapped everything up nicely and I am really looking forward to what Peacock will do in the future. Overall, I thought that this was a great ending to a fun series. I did go back and forth between giving this a 3 or 4 star rating, but in the end I thought that it was really well done so I went with the higher rating. I would recommend this to anyone that is looking for a YA paranormal story.

Notable Scene:

Trembling, I closed the door and flipped the dead bolt.

“He’ll be back,” I said, pressing my forehead to the wood. “He knows I was lying about Serena and he saw my scar. He’s not sure whether or not I’m infected.”

“We have to leave. Now.” Trey headed for the kitchen.

I had to call Kyle and Jason; I had to warn them not to come to the house. I reached into my pocket and came up empty: I had left my phone in Serena’s room.

As I headed for the stairs, I heard Trey promise Serena he’d die before letting anyone touch her.

Praying it wouldn’t come to that, I took the stairs two at a time. How long until the man returned with reinforcements? Five minutes? Ten? A flash of movement caught my eye through an upstairs window as I reached the second-floor landing. A car with tinted windows—the same car I had seen earlier—had rolled to a stop in front of the house and a second car was pulling up behind it.

“Trey!” I bolted back down the stairs.

The sound of shattering glass came from the rear of the house followed by a ragged, male shout.

I tripped on the last step and collided with Trey and Serena in the hallway.

Blood welled from a gash in Trey’s arm and Serena’s eyes were so wide that she looked like one of the girls in the manga Tess sometimes read.

There was a thud at the other end of the hall. I turned toward the noise just as something slammed into the front door with enough force to splinter the wood around the dead bolt.

More shouts echoed in the kitchen. They were in the house.

“Go!” Trey shoved Serena and me into the small half bath underneath the stairs and followed us inside.

I want to thank Harper Teen for providing me with an early copy of this book to read and give an honest review. Receiving this book for free has in no way altered my opinion or review.

I will say when I received this book for review I had not read the first two books in the series. So I dove into those and really liked them, especially the first book.

If you haven't read the first two books in this series, then I will warn you there are most likely spoilers for those books and you might not want to continue reading this. However, this will be a spoiler free review for this particular book.

This book picks up right where Thornhill left off. There has been a mass breakout from Thornhill and it has left our main character, Mac, curious as to how far the reaches of these camps actually go. Suspects pop up left and right and she's not sure who to believe, who to trust. The "rehabilitation" camps have proven to be so much more than what they show the public, and she wants to expose this and put an end to it.

Mac continues to have disturbing dreams about Amy. Dreams that keep giving her more and more clues as to what Amy's death really was all about. As Mac uncovers the truth, she is slammed by the realization that Amy was more of a pawn than anything else in this race between the werwolves and the groups that hunt them. Mac is unafraid to dive headfirst into things and bring them to the surface. She's strong and willing to sacrifice herself to make things right. At the same time, I did get a bit fed up with her constantly pulling away from Kyle and complaining about how she just cannot lose him at the same time. It got a bit old. At the same time, Kyle is constantly telling her that once things settle down he's gone, which made me even more mad because he thought by leaving he was keeping people safe when really it would make no difference in the end. I will say I didn't see much character development in these characters in this book. It was all pretty much hit on in the first and second books.

We do get more of the secondary characters in this book: Jason, Trey, and Serena. Jason still comes off as arrogant to me, even though he's had some great development. I love Trey's character. He's strong and wiling to stand for what he believes in. And Serena truly is a great friend to Mac.

My favorite part about this trilogy is that werwolves are known to the general public. No one is hiding them. The disease that causes people to turn into werwolves has been around for 12 years, so people have had time to get used to having this as part of their society. It doesn't mean people are not scared, but it's interesting to watch the characters talk about werwolves out in the open.

I also love how Peacock uses Mac's dreams to give us information on Amy and her death. Much of it is cryptic at times, but you really do get a great sense of forbidding and it kept me wanting to read and find out exactly what the mystery was all about. And Peacock has a way with describing the scenes in this book that make me feel like I'm right there; like I can see exactly what Mac is seeing. Some of the descriptions are eerily accurate to the point I had to go back and re-read to make sure I really was seeing what I was seeing!

There are quite a few plot twists and turns in this book. Some I had figured out from book 2, where I knew there were things that were just not quite right with certain characters. Some were more of a surprise to me.

Overall I really enjoyed this series. I think fans of paranormal will eat this right up, especially since it doesn't hide werwolves as a mystery that no one knows about. Fans of Stephanie Meyer, Carrie Jones, and Maggie Stiefvater will enjoy this great twist on a paranormal mystery that will keep you guessing who to trust through the very end.

It's always hard finishing a series you love..

The final book to this awesome trilogy was pretty darn great. I will admit, I had some "oh yeah!" moments as it has been a long wait and a long time since I've read the previous book. Remembering the little tid bits from here and there helped bring the story back together. I wasn't extremely thrilled on how things ended, but in all honesty, it's mainly because of my feelings towards some of the characters. Kathleen Peacock actually pulled things together in a pretty good "happily ever after" kind of ending.

Please be aware that there may be some spoilers ahead

I think I was the only one who was really on "Team Jason". Even from the previous books I just didn't have that great pull towards Kyle as I think everyone else did. I guess that was one flaw in not giving it a full 5 stars. Then all of a sudden Jason and Serena are a "thing" by the end of it?! Um wait, what the hell? I understand you have to fast forward a couple years but I just felt like you could have eased us into a Serena and Jason connection somehow before that and well, that upset me.

Hank surprised me and I was extremely happy to see him and so many other packs stand up to the world in the end. I grew a huge love for him for that, but I was sad to see Mac and her dad not really connect at all in this book. They were getting so much more closer in the last book that I felt their so called "re-uniting" just kind of fell off the cliff and disappeared and then, just like the Jason and Serena situation - BAM, jump a few years and they are happy close and wonderful. Wait- what?! Sigh, I know. I'm probably just being picky.

I was very happy to see Amy find peace. FINALLY. I loved her connection to the story through-out this whole series and I almost felt relieved once everything came to the surface and she was finally brought justice. How wonderful :)

Okay, enough I know. This was a great trilogy that I will most likely read again. I'm glad Kathleen didn't get to carried away and change her trilogy into a series that dragged on forever (like some authors like to do) and for that I respect her as a writer even more.

I'm very, very happy. To another ending of a great series -- thank you for storming through my imagination!

LOOK! LOOK! I finished another series! LOOK AT ME GO!

Finishing a trilogy is a monumental feat for me, but once I had a copy of WILLOWGROVE in my hands, there was no stopping me. After everything that had happened in Hemlock and Thornhill, I was desperate for some answers and closure, not unlike our hero, Mac.

It’s hard to get into the particulars of WILLOWGROVE without giving away crucial details for the first two books, but suffice to say Kathleen Peacock wraps up this series wonderfully, tying up all the loose threads and answering long-lingering questions. She stayed true to her characters from book one through book three, and I absolutely adore her for that.

If you’re looking for a paranormal fix with a lot of mystery and suspense (and a couple of seriously hot boys – hands off Kyle, OK?), then I urge you to pick up this series by Peacock. It’s fun, fast, and absolutely fantastic to read.

Hey—I even finished this series, people. We all know how rare that is for me.

I'm glad I was able to read the three books right after one another. As I think it made me enjoy them more. But oh. I really wanted to love Willowgrove. As I enjoyed Hemlock a lot, but didn't fully love Thornhill. In the beginning, this book was great. But then it changed for me. And now I'm having mixed feelings.

I'm not sure where to begin. So I'm going to begin by saying that I adore the author, Kathleen. I think she's awesome. But. Despite me adoring her, I did not love this book. I'm so sorry about that. But I'm also going to be honest about my feelings for this book. So yeah. My review may not be all that positive.

In the beginning, though, I thought I would love this book a lot. It was interesting and exciting and I wanted to know what would happen next. And I enjoyed the characters. But then more things started happening. And I started disliking Mac so, so much. And I just. When I do not like the main character, I start having issues with the rest of the book too. Like the writing. So many things didn't make sense for me. I would never talk or act like that. Mac just did so many stupid things, always going on her own, and oh. I did not like it at all. I wish I had. But I didn't. She just bothered me in this book. Which I will explain more about, in a little bit. Mac is also brave, though, which I did like. I just wish she had thought about things a bit more.

Before I start being all negative, hih, I do want to say that I think the plot in these books are pretty awesome. It is exciting and brutal. I enjoyed reading about the different camps and I liked reading about the werewolves. But. Thing is, there isn't much about that at all. Most of this book is about Mac and her feelings and things she is doing. And while I adored Mac previously, I did not like her in this book. I'm sorry. I wanted to, but no. I didn't like how she always left the others behind, going out alone.

Then there is that whole romance thing. I can't honestly call this a love triangle. Mac only loves Kyle. But I can also say that I hated most of the romance. I adored Kyle. So much. And I just want him happy. But I didn't like how Mac dealed with Jason being in love with her. They shared that kiss in book two. She never told Kyle. She could have, he asked, he is hurting. But she didn't. Because she didn't want to ruin him and Jason's friendship. Wtf. I didn't think they were friends at all, to be honest. Oh, it bothered me.

I just did not get the friendship between Kyle and Jason. Sure, they might have been best friends as kids, but I don't think they were friends at all these days. They didn't talk. They didn't hang out together. They didn't seem close at all. Yet Mac keeps insisting that they are the best of friends, that they would die for each other. Ugh. That bothered me. Especially the Jason part. I never liked him. Not once. And Mac keeps thinking that he has changed. I didn't see that one bit. Sigh. He is not a character for me.

Anyway. There are many things happening in this book. And I did like reading about Serena and Trey. I just didn't fully love them either. I felt like this book wanted me to care about all the characters, yet it ended up not making me care about any of them. I just didn't care much at all. I didn't get why they all cared so much either. It made no sense to me. Like Mac wanting to die to protect them all. Sigh. Why? I'm not sure I would have felt the same way, and that bothered me a little bit. I just failed to connect.

There are so many things about Willowgrove that I would talk about. But I won't. I just. I'm so sorry that I didn't love it more. I wanted to, but I couldn't. So I'm sorry to say that this is a two star book for me. But. I do think many others will love it. Honestly. I just had issues with it. So yeah. I do want you all to read this book :) So you should, when it comes out in January. Huge thank you to Katherine Tegen Books / HarperTeen for the auto-approval on Edelweiss that made me able to read and review this book early.

I received this ARC from the author via the publisher in a contest I won, I was in no way compensated for this review.

You don't know how ecstatic I was to have won an ARC of Kathleen Peacock's Willowgrove! That it arrived one week before release day didn't even matter! I have thoroughly enjoyed this story from the beginning! I love werewolves and this takes werewolves into a different kind of light, where they are out in the open and are not really loved by the people!

Things have been tense since the events of Thornhill, Mac and her friends are trying to get back to real life, but that itself is a difficult task when Kyle, Serena, and Trey are still werewolves and Jason is still a member of the group dedicated to hunting them. Though he has changed a lot, he's know longer a true Tracker, but is now an inside man so to speak and does what he can to protect his friends.

The ultimate goal still remains trying to find a sort of peace where the weres can live peacefully in society among humans. But there's still a lot of hate towards them. Mac and her friends end up uncovering quite a bit about the disease and track things to an asylum called Willowgrove, which was a place far more scarier than Thornhill.

There were lots of surprises in this one! Characters that did things that totally blew me away! Things were just shocking! I can't get into more than that without giving away spoilers!

I love that despite all the chaos, that Mac and Kyle still found time for moments of romance! I've been Team Kyle since the beginning, despite Jason's feelings for her. And really, I never felt like this was a love triangle in that way where a "choice" had to be made. Mac pretty much knew from the getgo that Kyle was the one for her and I loved that too. I loved that there was none of this "oh who do I love more" conundrum.

I loved the pacing to this one too! It wasn't slow, but more a gradual buildup. Just as you hit one level on intensity, you're already moving onto the next! It was incredible! There were some character deaths, though I was prepared for a number due to Twitter awhile back, but there were only a very small number that tore at my heart. I was expecting some major heartache after seeing Kathleen tweet that number, but luckily, it was only minor heartache...if you can call that lucky!

The ending was remarkable! I truly loved it! It was very...fitting. I don't want to get into spoiler territory, so I will cut myself off from that! This was an amazing werewolf trilogy that brings up some real life issues in a way that isn't at all preachy or showy. It felt real! A highly recommended read!

This was such a good ending to a great trilogy!!! It was action-packed and dealt with discrimination (even if it was against werewolves) fantastically.

I highly, HIGHLY recommend this paranormal trilogy! It's definitely one of the best ones out there. :)

What a damn good ending to one of my favorite werewolf series!! Several years later but I’m so glad I got to finish it. I love these books so much. Being back with Mac, Kyle and Jason was fulfilling. Lots of action, suspense and heartache these characters faced, but they were a great trio. Even though I felt both boys were perfect for our brave and fearless Mackenzie, I always knew who she’d end up with in the end.

Also, so happy to see the other boy get his hea too. No matter what though, their friendship and bond was my favorite part. Both guys would do anything to protect Mac. Lots of danger lurked in every corner, and had me on the edge of my seat. Seriously, she put herself in so much danger to get to the truth of what was going on and what was being done to the wolves in Thornhill. Innocents were being murdered and she was determined to set things right. I loved her tenacity.

There was so much going on, but I never had trouble keeping up. Peacock painted such a vivid scene, I felt I was there watching it all unfold. I loved her describing the scenery, too. I loved this world and most of the characters.

Serena, Trey, Eve and even Hank were great supporting characters. I loved the romance and the PNR elements. Well done. I’m so glad to be back in this genre.

Omg, I fucking love this cover! But 2015?? You skipped a year. Dammit! I need to get this book now! Nonetheless, I am so excited for this last book. I loved the first 2 so much. And I'm so damn curious as to who she will end up with: Kyle or Jason. My hope is Kyle...even though he pulled that shit at the end of Thornhill. Sigh.

Let the long countdown begin...

An awesome ending to a great series.

I've anxiously awaited this series ending book for what feels like forever now. I've loved Peacock's wolves since I read Hemlock, the first book in her series. You can read my reviews for Hemlock and Thornhill. There are many things I've loved about this series, and while it's bitter sweet to say goodye to Mac, Kyle and all the characters I've enjoyed getting to know, I have loved the time I've spent reading this series. This series has had it all. There's romance, action, loyalty, an unbreakable friendship, betrayal, deadly secrets, cover ups, plot twists, and more. Most importantly, there are plenty of WOLVES!

I'm going to vague in my review, as to not give away any spoilers, because I can't really talk about specifics without giveaway anything away. What I can say, is this ending is all that I had hoped it would be, and then some. I liked the surprises, shocking twists, and turn of events that took place in WILLOWGROVE. I liked that some of the betrayals and surprising secrets that are revealed were things I didn't predict. I have enjoyed the characters of the Hemlock series. This book might of broken me a bit with what a couple of the characters go through/deal with. This ending is so bitter sweet for them. Romances and friendships get stronger, some friends and loved ones die, and some tough sacrifices are made that will forever change Mac and her friends. Don't worry, for all the heart break, and there are moments of sweetness, kissy scenes, and moments that made me snicker.

WILLOWGROVE wraps up the series perfectly.

REVIEW

Willowgrove is a great conclusion to the Hemlock trilogy, I loved it!. This book is about werewolves a little different to which I´m used to read and in a world in which is public knowledge their existence, but this fact caused panic among humans, they´re afraid of these monsters, that´s why all known werewolves are round up and taken to concentration camps.

In the previous book Mac rescued her boyfriend Kyle and her friend Serena from a rehabilitation camp and she thought they were safe for the time being, but somehow they were found and this people want to recapture Serena, because she´s important to an experiment on Lupin virus. So once Mac and her friends are on the run and trying to stay safe, but things get complicated when in their city will be a rally that will bring together Trackers (those who hunt werewolves) and supporters of werewolves, so disturbances are anticipated and amidst all this is Mac and her friends.

Besides all her problems, Mac is still having strange and frightening dreams about her best friend Amy (which was killed in the first book by a werewolf), which could be leading her to discover a series of lies behind the origins of the Lupin virus.

Willowgrove was very engaging, because from the beginning is action-packed and fast-paced with some mystery that does not let go until you finish reading it. It has a very good ending where all the questions are answered, tying up loose ends and has an epilogue - which I love because I can see what happened to the main characters.

Series review:

Hemlock: I absolutely loved Hemlock, the first book in this series. It was something different and fun. I was in the mood for a good werewolf story and Hemlock was the perfect book. I liked all the characters and the plot was fast moving and interesting all the way through. 5 Stars

Thornhill: the second book in the Hemlock series, Thornhill, was a little slower and bit uninteresting. There were parts that were exciting, but mostly I had a hard time getting through it. I still liked the idea and some of the characters, though I started to dislike the main character Mac a little bit. Overall I gave this book 3 stars because it was still a fun idea.

Willowgrove: I was very disappointed with this book. Having loved the first book, I was hoping for a really exciting conclusion to the series. But I was completely bored. I got half way through and I felt like nothing exciting was happening so I skimmed the last half of the book. I didn't like the characters much anymore so I didn't really care what happened to them. I just wasn't invested in the story anymore. I was hoping that this would become my new favorite series with how much I loved the first book, but sadly, the series just fell flat. 1 Star

The ending wasn't exactly what I had in mind, but it ties things up nicely. Honestly, it has left a bittersweet feeling in me. I hadn't expect so many to die, especially with Eve and Trey. Stephen's part in the whole scheme of things was definitely something unexpected, seeing as how he was hardly mentioned in the other two books.

You might say I'm shallow or selfish but... I didn't like that Jason ended up with Serena. I mean, I would have just preferred it if his love life was left hanging. I just don't really see them as a couple and it just doesn't sit right with me. In fact, if not for their deaths, the new couple that I had hoped for was Eve and Trey. This is so twisted. But still, I'm happy for Kyle and Mac. They finally got their happy ending!
