I had to believe in the cause more than in my comfort. I had to live for a purpose bigger than myself. I had to be willing to take the heat so that I could move people forward." (a) Believing in the cause creates your conviction. (b) Believing in your vision fuels your inspiration. (c) Believing in your people builds your motivation.
Quotes in the book that changed me: #epihanyquotes • Only have 24 hours for wallowing or savoring victory • "Many people make choices that limit them. They quit a job with great potential because it is difficult." - In life, for everything you gain, you give up something. We can make choices that increase our potential or choices that take away from it. • Never complain about what you allow. • Give more than you receive (practice this everyday) • (Be realistic. You cannot be a leader in all areas of your life.) You cannot develop influence with everyone. There isn't enough time in a day or enough days in a year. Developing influence is a process. So choose where you will invest yourself to develop influence and become an effective leader. • (Anti-finishers) Every time people quit and don't finish something they start, they lose a bit of their self-esteem. They begin to internally label themselves as quitters. I've never found a person with a high self-image who quits all the time. There is pride in accomplishment that people who quit do not possess. They may show false bravado, but not a deep sense of satisfaction with who they are and what they can do. • It's always the leader's responsibility to be the first to try to mend the relationship. • THE WEAKER PERSON CONTROLS THE RELATIONSHIP. • If leaders rely too long on past successes and keep doing what they've always done, the organization will eventually hit a wall.❗❗ • YOU CAN'T GROW TO YOUR POTENTIAL IF YOU DON'T KNOW YOUR PURPOSE. • Never reward effort. Give the reward only when the work is done. • Hold yourself to the highest possible standard. You cannot take people where you haven't been. • People who make growth their goal ---instead of title, position, salary, or other external target ---always have a future. • As a leader, you need to help your people understand that nothing good comes out of being average professionally. One of the best ways to raise the bar for people is to do it incrementally. • A legacy is created only when leaders put their people into a position to do great things without them. • You may have lots of people worth investing in. If so, don't try to develop more than 20 percent. If you spread yourself too thin, people won't get your best. • Not all your decisions will be correct. None of us is perfect. But if you get into a habit of making decisions, experience will develop your judgement to a point where more and more of your decisions will be right" --H.G. Andrews
Other quotes: • Leaders know they will never possess what they are unwilling to pursue • Give it all you've got, and don't worry too much about the outcome. • Look at the areas where you are naturally intuitive, productive, satisfied, and influential. We tend to lead naturally in areas where we are gifted. We also add the most value when we work in those areas. Once you've discovered and developed your abilities, put them to use to help your team. • If people are able and willing to change, there's a chance you can be successful. • There are two kinds of people who have confidence: those with a high level of mastery in their area of strength and those who have no knowledge whatsoever and think everything's easy because they've never done anything. • If a person only ever wants to talk about the problem, but not actually do anything about it, he or she may care only about it, he or she may care only about being heard and understood rather than about changing and growing. Why invest in someone who doesn't want to follow your direction and grow? • Character is the sum total of all our everyday choices. It is putting right values into action every day. It's consistency of values, ideals, thoughts, words, and actions.
Leader prompts: • Ask yourself whether you have given the best you have where you are now. Don't move anywhere else until you have. Don't seek a move just to make things easier on yourself. To transition with integrity, you need to have done your best work possible. Then you can leave with a clear heart and mind. Besides, you want to leave on a high note. You can see farther if you're at a peak than if you're in a valley. • If you've failed as a leader, consider the following: (a) Evaluation: What went wrong? (b) Emotional Strength: Can you bounce back? (c) Evolution: Can you make the adjustments needed for future success? • Will I be able to add value? Will I be able to stay true to myself?
Good leader scripts: • "You may not agree with what I've just said. But you will have to agree to change and follow my guidelines if you want to remain on the team. And I'm going to hold you accountable." • "Have I offended you? Is there something I've done that's put strain on our relationship? Is there anything I can do to make amends? Please talk to me."
This is a great, quick read for help in leadership. It’s conveniently laid out so you can read specifically the parts of interest to you; whether you want to become a leader, advice on dealing with tough employees/bosses/players, etc. A very helpful book.
This is a great resource adapted from Maxwell's book, "Good Leaders Ask Great Questions." Plan to use this as a resource to build into my next generation leaders.
- Self leadership first - Environment is the number one platform to cultivate leadership - Delegating vs dumping tasks - Leadership is providing value to others, helping them break through their barriers - Handling a tough employee: meet with employee as soon as possible, tell employee what’s going on in no uncertain terms, be honest, include examples, ask the employee what his/her thoughts are, does the employee have the ability to change AND want to change, both need to be a solid YES, if one of them is a no ask employee to reconsider and give them a week, if they are still not sure then tell them they might be better suited to another team - How to handle a boss you don't get along with

Great book This book holds a special place in my heart because it is the book that my father read that has spurred him onto his leadership journey I disagreed with nothing in this book Very practical 5-7 steps for many scenarios of people trying to grow their leadership or become better leaders in an organization If you are experienced in leadership books, there are not going to be too many ahas in this book If you are inexperienced in leadership books, then read/listen to this book repeatedly until the concepts are stuck in your head I recommend this book to anyone trying to become a better leader
This book provides some common-sense advice on leading and developing future leaders. There were a few highlights that I think are worth revisiting: * Successful people do daily what unsuccessful people do occasionally. * Lead well for long enough and people will shift from giving you no credit, to giving you proper credit, to giving you too much credit. * When you take over a team, if you do nothing other than put each player in his her strength zone, you will greatly increase the productivity and success of the team.
This is a great, fast read. if you're looking for a comprehensive "go-to", then this is the one you want. It is a great resource for leaders who are at all levels of their journey and is designed in such a way that you can quickly reference the materials and lists.
Excelente libro. Pienso que para entender un poco bien este libro debes estar un poco más adentrado y haber practicado el liderazgo. Habla de formas de como hacer un buen liderazgo y de como aplicarlo. Muy buenos consejos y herramientas para llevarlas a la práctica.

A solid book. I appreciated the information about how different personalities can lead in different ways. I thought that was very helpful. I didn't find much new information here or anything particularly enlightening. Still, a good read indeed.
Este libro, con formato de preguntas y respuestas, no me pareció tan bueno como otros que he leído de Maxwell. No diría que fue una pérdida de tiempo, pero hay mejores libros que leer sobre el liderazgo.
Brief 150 page business book. First time reading something by this author, but he is the guru on leadership and I believe I will read more by him in the future. Enjoyed the no nonsense approach to leadership in this book.
Short and sweet book asking the top questions of leadership. Great for a refresh or some quick tips about leadership. Definitely should be read by someone who's read many other books on the subject as this is very high level
A great leadership resource that doesn't weigh itself down with unnecessary jargon. It's straightforward and offers good advice on many areas. Whether you are new to managing and leadership or are a seasoned manager, this book is a good resource and reminder of how to make yourself the best you can be to better support your employees and coworkers.
John Maxwell books are a staple of reading for leadership and management . . . all nine hundred and seventy eight of his books. But seriously, the guy comes out with a new one once a quarter it seems like. This is a pretty good and pretty short book that covers leadership behaviors that fall into both the good and the bad categories. I think anyone that reads through this will be able to identify with some of the best and some of the worst characteristics of leaders that they have worked for or seen throughout their life and that definitely makes the subject matter easier to envision.
All in all, not a bad book, but not a great one either.
