“Fudge” is the kindest nickname given to a half-black child born smack in the middle of a family of eight children who were not only white, they were Irish. This memoir shares experiences of one of more than a thousand mixed-race children, many of whom grew up conflicted about their racial identify and feeling abandoned by their black American military fathers stationed throughout Great Britain during World War II.
I loved this book! At times, it read like a novel. At times it invoked anger, and at other times it made me laugh out loud. It is amazing to me that someone can live through a childhood filled with abuse and ridicule, and grow up to be such an insightful person, readily giving to others. This book gave me hope that the good in people may one day prevail, and that those subjected to the experiences Pauline lived through become strong and willing to stand up for others without a voice. Thank you, Pauline!
A friend gave me this book because he grew up in the same area as the author. I read this fascinating book in one day because it was so interesting and honest. The straight-forward writing made this true story so easy to stick with and absorb. I just love books like this!
The author of this book is the sister of my cousin Mike's wife Delly, so I am very excited to read it!
Fudge is a memoir written by Pauline Nevins who was a Biracial, Half-Irish British War Baby. I connected with this memoir on so many levels (Raising 4 beautiful Biracial children for one) and reading this book has given me the inspiration and courage to start writing me own memoir about growing up with my own amazing mother. Thank you Pauline Nevins for sharing your story!
