Emil Lampost, who is barely able to cross the street without assistance, and Harland Fell, a qualified candidate with a clear vision for his hometown, compete for the mayor's office in Terre Bluff. When Emil's yard signs and bumper stickers show up everywhere, even in Harland's yard and on his car, it is clear to everyone that Emil Lampost and his well-connected, unethical family will do anything to put him in office. This zany but sadly familiar look at the world of political campaigns shows how easily voters can be fooled, even by a dishonest politician who might not be able to spell his own name without cue cards.
Hilarity reigns when Emil Lampost, a likeable buffoon who would rather smoke pot and loaf around, is forced to run for mayor by his greedy, power-hungry father, Ralph. Ralph's take-no-prisoners style of capitalism embodies all that is wrong with the political and economic landscape of the united States today, while Emil's goofy demeanor and endless stream of malapropisms leaves little doubt just who is being skewered in this satiric tour de force. But don't let the nonsense fool you, the cast of amusing, lovable, and precicely-drawn characters, elevates Terre Bluff beyond pure spoof into the realm of literature with a capital "L." Well done, Ms. Knauer Morgan. Well done indeed.
