Pro Bono? discusses philanthropy not as a social or humanitarian practice but as an integrated part of present-day creative capitalism, having a direct relation to its growing inequality. The book investigates four expressions of philanthropy as consumer philanthropy, where we are asked to consume with good conscience; corporate philanthropy where businesses engage in social work and where philanthropic associations reengineer themselves to mimic corporations; billionaire philanthropy where conspicuous consumption is now being supplemented with conspicuous philanthropy; and finally celebrity philanthropy where now one of the hallmarks of a celebrity is the commitment to use that fame to do good.
The book offers another perspective on Capitalism, which is interesting. Some really good points are made and they’re well backed up. However, the book was started in 2012 and published in 2015, whilst the points made are still valid today most of them aren’t as salient as they probably would’ve been ten years ago. I’d love an updated version which included the effect of social media on Capitalism. Also, I’d be really interested in the coverage of the criminal justice system from this perspective.
