The Lady in Red’s revenge against the Piemans is nearly complete, and soon there will be no one to stop her. She’s ready for anything, except for the return of her long dead son. But is it really him?
Tee watches as the airships rain down fiery destruction. She adjusts the rocket-pack’s leather straps and glances over her shoulder. Her friends might never forgive her, but she can’t stand idly by any longer. In a blink, she’s thrown into the air. Then, the unthinkable happens—the rocket-pack comes off.
Who’s the new Yellow Hood? Who dies? And are the Piemans really down for the count?
Beauties of the Beast continues the thrilling ride from All the King’s-Men and will have you punching the air with joy and biting your nails in angst.
In 2014, I stopped my "hopefully one day" dream of becoming an author, stopped doing nothing with my writing, and kicked off my indie author life. Twenty-five years of doing nothing with my writing was enough, and after two medical events, I was filled with drive to change my life.
I've written the much loved young adult series, The Yellow Hoods, a world where steampunk and fairy tale meet.
In 2016, I showed two other sides of myself as an author, The Wizard Killer - Season One which is post-apocalyptic fantasy written in an episodic style, and the upcoming science fiction book, The Man of Cloud 9, which is infused with some of my high tech life from before I was an author.
I'm a frequent public speaker at schools and conventions, a dyslexic with some motivational chronic issues, and live in Calgary, Alberta with my wife and kids.
The fourth book in the Yellow Hoods series continues the storylines from the previous books, picking up immediately where the All the King's Men ended. At this point, I cannot speak much to the plot without heavily spoiling the revelations and events of the earlier books in the series.
By book four, the characters are all so well drawn and developed with strong personalities and intricate backstories. There are some fantastic moments within this novel. The characters have grown so much since they were first introduced into the series. Once again, the writing is enjoyable to read with a fun, playful quality. Furthermore, Beauties of the Best has some of the best quotable lines of the entire series. So many chapters ended on brilliant one liners!
Without giving away too much, the ending of this book packs a punch and will leave readers clambering for the next book. Thankfully readers will not have to wait long as the fifth and final book in this series is scheduled to be released in April 2017. If you are not yet caught up on the series yet, you still have time to remedy that.
I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. As always, my opinions are my own.
This clever mix of fairytales and steampunk is a wonderful and original, fast-paced series. Delightful for young(ish) readers and adults, albeit on different levels.
I spent the best part of two weeks in the company of Tee, her friends and family, and their rivals, and enjoyed every minute of it.
The plot and the sub-plots weave back and forth seamlessly, making an entertaining and riveting read that’s hard to put down. (How the author kept everything straight while writing the series is beyond me, but he did it well.)
There are more twists and turns than a roller-coaster ride, some danger and tragedy, plenty of wit and humour, and lots of action and adventure. A general theme of growing up.. .family, friendship, confidence, loyalty and more, runs smoothly within the story.
The author brings the large and diverse cast of characters to life, and as they continue to develop and change throughout the series, we learn more of their hidden depths… and flaws. At the same time, he paints a detailed picture of the world they inhabit, starting with the small village in book one to a much larger expanse by book five, as our heroes (and villains) travel further away from their homes.
I liked the names of the characters, many of them plucked from fairytales and myths and given a twist… my favourite, being Ron-Paul Silskin!
Adam Dreece delivers again with the latest installment in his remarkably entertaining Yellow Hoods series. Intrigue, action, and emotion all abound in this compelling tale of the continued battle between the Tub and the Fare - two secret societies locked in a complex battle of wills. As with the prior books in the series, there are generous doses of humor and wit to strike just the right balance against the darker, more intense elements of the story. Dreece has a way of making the reader care about the villains as well as the heroes, and he skillfully weaves all the pieces together into a satisfying tale that leaves the reader wanting more. A perfect read for older kids and adults of any age.
I'm amazed as to how he can manage to keep he can keep everything straight in his head as he writes it all down. The sheer volume of the different things going on with different characters in different places around the Eorth, all at the same time, is slightly flabbergasting. It takes great talent to be able to paint all the different tales and characters he has into one big story.
The series as a whole is beautifully written. The characters feel real, and their problems feel real, and their pain feels real.
It broke my heart to hear what happened to Klaus... I had to re-read the chapter and the conversation over, however, the ability Adam has to plot things, is genius! I can't wait for future books!
I love this book and the series very much, the author paints a very clear picture of how everything looks, feels and happens along the lives and situations of the characters. The book is descriptive and easily read that everything can be easily understood on multiple layers that are integrated in the story line.
Quick disclaimer here, folks. As with many series, you need to start with book 1. In this case, that’s Along Came a Wolf. Start there and then you can come back to this one.
Tee has had to face a lot in a short amount of time. So much so, it almost broke her. However, with her friend by her side making sure Tee concentrated on what was most important, perhaps Tee will be okay in the end. Things are heating up around them as the Lady in Red begins her final moves.
Beauties of the Beast is a direct continuation of All the King’s-Men. Before you get after me for pointing out it’s a series, so of course it is, I’ll say the two books could easily have been combined into one book. Beauties of the Beast overlaps the previous book just a tad. There are parts that were lifted verbatim from the previous book to remind readers what’s going on before finishing the scene. I’m thrilled I had this book ready to read right after All the King’s-Men. Based on each book’s length, I know why they were split up. I also believe that Mr. Dreece broke off book 3 at the best possible point considering all that was going on.
Mr. Dreece keeps the tempo going in this novel. While he kept moving from one group to another, it didn’t feel as chaotic as the previous book. Perhaps it was because I was ready for it this time. I also made it a point to study the map at the beginning of the book. I was fully engaged the entire time and couldn’t wait to see what happened next. I have so many questions floating around in my head right now, but they probably contain spoilers, so I’ll keep them to myself.
There is one character I wanted to slap. I still want to slap him. That goes to show you how well Mr. Dreece writes his characters. I have become emotionally involved with almost every one of them. A few still have me confused by their actions and I can’t quite tell if they’re good or bad. It’s kind of driving me nuts. So much so, I might have to splurge and go buy book 5 so I can see how this all ends. Heck, I’ll probably end up getting the entire series. It’s definitely being added to my stack of books I have to re-read periodically because I enjoy them so much.
So go grab Along Came a Wolf and join me on this adventure!
Not kindle unlimited, got the trilogy {plus} set by whining at the writer that he wasn't on ku, sometimes that works, but only bother to do it if really want to read the book{s}. It worked for #4 and #5 too.
Do you remember any of the fairy tales or nursery rhymes you heard when you were little? How about Rub-a-dub-dub, Simple Simon, Chicken Little, Humpty Dumpty, or Santa Clause, Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Little Pigs, Rumpelstiltskin, Beauty and the Beast, or Alice in Wonderland? Want or need your memory jogged? This is, but isn't, those stories. Steampunk meets fairy talke, incentions and inventors, fairy tales are real, and to picutre the lands the first page has illustration. Want to more about everything that happened? Read the book{s}.
Along Came a Wolf (The Yellow Hoods #1) Breadcrumb Trail (The Yellow Hoods, #2) All the King's-Men (The Yellow Hoods, #3) The Yellow Hoods Boxset (Books 1-3) {includes mini-book 2.5: Snappy & Dashing
Beauties of the Beast (The Yellow Hoods, #4) The Day the Sky Fell (The Yellow Hoods #5)
In 4, the Lady in Red’s revenge against the Piemans is nearly complete and she's ready for anything, except the return of her {maybe} son. Airships rain down destruction, Tee uses the rocket pack to get in to the air, but the rocket packs comes off. There is also a new Yellow Hood, who is that, who dies, are the Piemans really out of the fight, {So far all of have gotten 5 stars although as usual with series some liked a bit more than others.}
Maybe you thought there weren't going to be new characters in the penultimate book. Maybe you thought you could stop updating your cast flow chart. Finally laminate it and put it up on the wall to use as a reference. Well put that frame back in the box. Dreece put in more people. Never fear, the delightful Tee, Elly, and Richy are still with us. As are many of the old favourites from previous installments. Plus all the backstabbing, plotting, and double-dealing we've come to expect from Dreece's writing. But wait, there's more! Airship battles! More explosions! Rocket packs! Here I thought shock sticks and mechanical horses were enough excitement. Dreece disagreed, and we all benefit. Something he didn't add more of was bloodshed. The level of violence has been pretty consistent since it was upped in the second book, and there isn't much else to warn for. This is a really decent series, and I'm looking forwards to seeing how everything gets tied together in The Day the Sky Fell. Stay tuned!
Continued awesomeness by Adam Dreece, as always, some great Easter eggs and references from various pop culture influences; I especially enjoyed the nods to Firefly/Serenity.
Good continuation to the Yellow Hoods series, taking the darker turn that the previous books promised but keeping the same sense of wonder and the element of almost childlike innocence. It has the charm and intelligence of the other books, and sets up what is sure to be a gripping fifth book.
All our favorites are back with continuing adventures and new, important characters. Will they be good guys or bad guys. And an unexpected romance!! This books shows kids/YA/adults thwt you can accomplish more than you imagine. I highly recommend this book.
