Born and raised in the American mid-west, Jeff Smith learned about cartooning from comic strips, comic books, and watching animation on TV. In 1991, he launched a company called Cartoon Books to publish his comic book BONE, a comedy/adventure about three lost cousins from Boneville. Against all odds, the small company flourished, building a reputation for quality stories and artwork. Word of mouth, critical acclaim, and a string of major awards helped propel Cartoon Books and BONE to the forefront of the comic book industry.
In 1992, Jeff’s wife Vijaya Iyer joined the company as partner to handle publishing and distribution, licensing, and foreign language publications. In the Spring of 2005, Harry Potter’s U.S. publisher Scholastic Inc. entered the graphic novel market by launching a new imprint, Graphix with a full color version of BONE: Out from Boneville, bringing the underground comic to a new audience and a new generation.
In 2007, DC Comics released Smith’s first non-creator owned work, SHAZAM! Monster Society of Evil, a four-part mini-series recreating a classic serial from comic’s Golden Age. Between projects, Smith spends much of his time on the international guest circuit promoting comics and the art of graphic novels.

It started out as a comic book series spanning 55 issues, but is now available as a 9 part graphic novel series (with a few spin offs, including Rose - a prequel that I had the chance to read as well). We follow 3 cousins as they're chased out of Boneville when one of them has scammed the whole town and the people had enough. After 2 weeks of wandering in a barren wasteland, they get separated and find themselves in different parts of a strange new land.
They do eventually find each other, but their presence in this land has awakened an evil force that had been dormant for 15 years.
These 3 bones are now thrust into a war they know nothing about and join forces with a few friends in high places to see that the evil is vanquished once and for all.

The characters are, for the most part, likable. The ones who aren't, you're not really supposed to like, so it's ok. The whole thing's really weird, but the first 3 are lighthearted and fun. It kind of takes a dark and serious turn that it never strays from once you get to the 4th, but by then you're so invested in the story you want to see it through!

Because they're graphic novels, it's an easy read. I read 2 a day AND a couple chapters of another book I'm reading and it still wasn't too much for me. I still got it done in 5 days 🙂

I'd recommend this series to anyone who likes graphic novels. I'd probably also recommend it to people who appreciate a weird sense of humor and like fantastical tales of bravery.
