She is a hopeless romantic who is living her dream, penning happily-ever-after's for her characters in between managing kids and the family business. ARC requested through Netgalley, and kindly provided by Entangled Publishing in exchange for a honest review.

After reading the first book in this series, Falling for the P.I. (Still Harbor, #1) by Victoria James , and loving it, I was very excited to receive an advanced copy of the next installment, Falling for Her Enemy. Victoria James did not disappoint. I was drawn into this story from the first page and found myself irritated when work, sleep and family obligations kept me from getting to read more than a chapter or two at a time.

We met Alex and her adoptive daughter, Cassy, in book one. Enter Hayden, Cassy’s potential biological father. Hayden is furious to find out he may have fathered a daughter and was not told she existed. Alex is terrified she may be about to lose the life she has fought so hard to build.

Hayden and Alex’s chemistry was great. I loved how inexplicably drawn to one another they were. Despite wanting to hate one another, and trying their best to do just that, they couldn’t deny the mutual attraction and respect they had for one another.

Cassy really stole the show in Hayden and Alex’s budding romance. She instantly fell for Hayden and picked him as a match for Alex. Her misuse of big words was hilarious.

“I don't know if you know this, but she's not my pathological mother.”

Victoria's stories always leave me with a silly smile on my face. I love her writing style how it always captivate me!

Great read!!! The teaser we got for Cara's story has me anxious to read her story when it comes out.

4.5 - "I hope it's you." Stars!

Victoria James takes her readers back for another visit to the town and residents of Still Harbour and Falling for Her Enemy gives us Alexandra McAllisters’ story.

I really enjoyed this book, you are given a heavy indication as to what the STORY is likely to be about towards the end of its predecessor Falling for The P.I., in that Alex is told that her adopted daughter’s possible father has been searching for her. In steps Hayden Brooks, successful man about town, never expecting to be thrust into the position of father, and especially not in a sleepy town like Still Harbor.

They were on opposite sides, yet the same.

The chemistry between the two of them bubbles from their first meeting, and although both of them are reluctant to see where it could lead, especially in light of the fact that Hayden is in town to potentially pull Alex’s carefully crafted happy apart.

”I really, really wish you’d turned out to be an asshole.”

I think what really gives this story its depth is the fact that the author took the time to show both of them and their individual vulnerabilities in relation to the situation they find themselves in. Hayden is just as far out of his comfort zone as Alex in that he may have a daughter he didn’t know about, especially as fatherhood isn't something he has really considered seriously up to the point of finding out. Alex is dealing with feelings and emotions for a man, something she has never entertained before, and especially not a man like Hayden, who has the potential to drastically change everything about how and why she lives her life the way she does.

Set against a backdrop of snow, Christmas and goodwill to all men, women and children, this is the perfect book to curl up with on a cold afternoon or evening, and just get lost in a beautifully written story.

Bakery manager Alexandra (Alex) McAllister's perfect life is now spinning out of control. She learns, on the same day, that the owners of the bakery need to sell now instead of five years from now when she can afford to buy the business and a man claiming to be her adopted daughter's biological father is coming to claim her. Hayden Brooks just learned that his one-night stand may have produced a child and he's ready to take responsibility.

This was a sweet story tinged with a little heartbreak. I admired Alex for having created a lovely family after a truly sad start in life. Her story brought me to tears and her generosity towards Hayden, tepid as it might have been, in letting him have access to her daughter while waiting for the paternity results showed how much she loved Cassy. Hayden was more of a puzzle, causing me to vacillate between like and dislike regarding his motivations. The one thing that worked, though, was the slow development of their romance. Their attraction to each other was instant; their trust and actions not so fast making this a more substantive story.

I enjoyed this story, much more than the first in this series. It had the spark, charm and poignancy I've come to expect from the author. 3.5 stars

Falling for Her Enemy is a book that I truly did enjoy but still failed to give me strong loving feelings towards it. I could chalk it up to the fact that I felt like the book focused more on Alex and Hayden's attraction to each other rather than figuring out if Hayden is the real father of Cassy. I mean, I don't think it would've taken a month for the guy to take a paternity test, would it? (I guess if it wasn't one month then Hayden and Alex wouldn't have fallen in love with each other and there'll be no more story so yeah okay let's just accept it and move on.) Alex is reluctant, you see, because she's afraid that the only good thing in her life will be taken away from her again.

I wouldn't have minded that instant attraction if I myself felt it, too. But what I did feel is an attraction that was way too contrived and forced. I really think the story could still work without the romance in it--even better, really--but alas, it couldn't be because this book is a romance! There should be lurrrve and kissing and all those sappy shit.

The only thing that could really be blamed here is my expectations and the fact that this book and I just don't have any chemistry at all. This is another one of those it's not you, it's me books for me. Jeez, I've been reading loads of them lately.

Falling for Her Enemy was a pretty cute book. It's a dual POV from Alexandra, who was a manager at a bakery and Hayden, who just found out that he's a dad. Both of their worlds are turned upside down on the same day. Alex finds out the bakery is closing - even though she wanted to buy it from the owner within 5 years. Then there's Hayden who found out that he had a daughter 7 years ago with a woman he had a drunken one night stand with. The kid was given up for an adoption.. which leads us back to Alex because she's the adoptive mother of the girl.

When they meet each other, there's obvious tension between the two. Hayden wants to make sure that he's actually the father and if he is.. well, he wants to be in her life a whole lot more than he was. Meanwhile, Alex is going to do whatever it takes to not lose her baby girl because she was the mother that she needed when her real parents didn't want her.

I really liked Alex and Cassy as a mother and daughter in this book. Their relationship was so precious and I definitely did not want them to be separated. I also felt really bad for Alex because of her past but then she also was letting Hayden get to know Cassy - which I thought was really sweet of her. I know it was probably so freaking hard for her to watch them develop a bond but I really did enjoy it too. Then there's the romance, which I thought was amazingly written. It wasn't instantaneously or anything which I'm glad because that probably would have ruined the book for me. I'm glad that it was slow and sweet.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and this series. I can't wait to read the next book.

Interesting and quite romantic! This is a story about a man who finds out that he might have fathered a child he knows nothing about and a woman who realises that her adoptive daughter might have a father she couldn't possibly keep her away from. It is quite emotional time for both Alex and Hayden.

Hayden works at a bakery which she plans to buy as soon as she can save enough funds. She has a daughter whom she loves a lot. Then she finds out that she might not get the bakery she has always wanted and in addition to that there is a chance that she will lose her daughter too. Because Alex is rich and successful and she cannot possibly win if it came down to custody fight.

Alex only wants to know the truth. If he has a daughter then he plans to bring her home. No matter what he is willing to make his daughter's life as easy as possible. What he doesn't expect is to fall in love with her adoptive mother or liking Still Harbor to think about staying there...

The story flows smoothly, there are some amazingly romantic scenes and some exciting ones. I loved all the characters. Its definitely a four stars read!

Hayden Brooks has just learned that he could be a father. A woman he had a one-night-stand with 7 years ago claims that he is the father of the child she put up for adoption. This woman is also threatening to expose Hayden as a deadbeat dad if she doesn't give her a million dollars. (Way to keep it classy, lady!!) After learning he could be a father, Hayden begins the search for his child, which brings him to Still Harbor and Alex McAllister and her daughter, Cassy.

Alex has a plan for her life: raise her daughter in a loving home and buying the local bakery (in 5 years). Alex is determined to provide a stable life for herself and her adopted daughter, Cassy. And then walks Hayden Brooks threatening to take it all away from her. And she definitely shouldn't be attracted to the man with the potential to tear her life apart. She wants to hate him, but the more time Hayden spends with Alex and Cassy, it gets harder and harder for her to think of him as the asshole she wishes he was.

Falling for Her Enemy is a really sweet, light, heartfelt story about learning to trust and let down walls. The romance between Alex and Hayden progressed really nicely for me (especially since there potentially so much at stake between these two). I haven't read the first book in the series, but I definitely will go back and read it.

4.5 heartwarming stars

Falling for Her Enemy was a beautiful and heartfelt read.

The storyline was touching and emotional, I really felt for both Alex and Hayden and what they had to deal with.

I enjoyed watching Alex and Hayden come together, it took time for them to open up and trust each other.

A huge draw for me was watching Hayden with Cassy, Alex's little girl. They made my heart swoon with their interactions, Cassy was such a sweetheart, loved her.

Overall this was a well written heartwarming read with beautiful characters that will leave you with a heart full of love.

I'm really enjoying the Still Harbor series, Falling for Her Enemy is the second book and while each book can be read as a standalone I highly recommend them both.

Looking forward to Cara's book next in Still Harbor #3

I love stories where there are children involved. That's why I love the Bliss Imprint. This series has got that wrapped up for me by how it starts with three women who live together with their adopted daughters after meeting each other while being in foster care as kids and each woman has her own story. I read Kate’s story first but you don’t have to read it in order to follow along but it helps.

This one is Alex’s story. She adopted Cassy from the foster care system. She has loved her since she saw her and works hard every day to provide Cassy with love and everything she needs to grow into a great adult. But the one thing Alex can’t provide for Cassy is a daddy.

In comes Hayden. He finds out that a one night stand resulted in a child who was given up for adoption and he believes Cassy is his. So he comes across Canada to do a paternity test and spend time with her. His mission was to take her home with him once the test comes back. What he didn’t plan on was falling for Alex. He also fell hard for Cassy too. He lived to work since his mother died when he was a child. He had forgotten what a family felt like.

Alex wants to hate him. He is trying to take the one thing in the world she lives for. She doesn’t want a man in her life. She has trust issues. But she can’t deny the attraction the two feel for each other. The more time they spend together the harder it is for Alex. She wants him but she hates him too. What a dilemma!

As the three spend time together, Hayden and Alex see things that make it hard not to notice the similarities between Hayden and Cassy; like being left handed and some of their face features and personalities.

Hayden charmed me. Ok I fell for him hard too. I was feeling a little happy the next day thinking about Hayden while at work. I loved how the author’s words made it hard for Alex to resist him even though he was trying to disrupt her life. The simple words on the page had charmed and mesmerized me! She describes an awful lot of emotions they both felt and I loved when the light bulb going off in their heads and they can no longer deny each other.

Cassy is a smart and loving child and how can you not love her too! She cracks me up and she warms my heart wanting a daddy and wanting her mom to make Hayden her daddy. She reprimands her mom for not being nice to him.

Then the Christmas season in the book got me all excited for the upcoming season too. Ugh! I just want to crawl into the book and live it. I am on a book high right now!

When it comes to me reading and reviewing books by Victoria James, I feel like a broken record. Her stories are emotional, heart-warming, and at times, tear inspiring. These attributes are what make her one of my favorite authors, if not favorite author.

Alex McAllister and her foster sisters Kate and Cara all met and grew up in foster care. Together, they vowed to each adopt a child and raise those kids together in a loving environment, something they didn’t have. Alex’s world is shattered when she discovers a man who thinks that he’s her daughter Cassy’s birth father.

Hayden Brooks is blindsided when a one-night stand shows up on his doorstep seven years later, claiming he fathered a child she put up for adoption. He doesn’t believe the woman but knows if he does have a child in the world, he has to be in that child’s life and possibly get custody. Hayden flies cross country from Vancouver to Toronto to get answers. He isn’t prepared for the connection he feels to Cassy or the attraction and protectiveness he feels for Alex.

Alex is put in a horrible situation from the start of the book. All she wants to do is own her own bakery and be a mother to Cassy. Both of those hopes and dreams are teetering on the brink of not happening. To say my heart broke for Alex is an understatement. Hayden has his reasons for wanting to take Cassy with him if he is in fact her father. The situation these two find themselves in is really a no-win situation. No matter what, someone’s going to get hurt.

I love all the characters in Falling for Her Enemy and the Still Harbor series. For a six-year-old, Cassy is pretty grounded and very vocal. She definitely carries her own in the story. Alex and Hayden have this push and pull relationship. They each want to like the other, but they have to remember in the end that only one is going to get Cassy. When they do give into their attraction, it’s beautiful.

Victoria James continues to write amazing stories. I have no clue how she does it. Falling for Her Enemy is emotional and does evoke tears. It’s heart-warming, making you want Alex, Cassy, and Hayden to become a family. With all the emotions the book stirs, Victoria has put in funny moments. My tablet can attest to having my latte spewed on it. If you aren’t already a fan of Victoria James, this book will make you become one.

I received an eARC of the book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Those of you, who know my preference in romances, know that I absolutely love a kid in the romance, especially when the kid is involved in getting two stubborn people together!
Hence, my main reason for requesting this book – but mostly I also do love a character getting a wake up and honestly realising his/her mistakes and moving on. And this book had both!

Alex is a single mother – by choice. She adopted a kid when she realised that going the traditional way wasn’t exactly happening – but the when the supposedly father of her kid contacts her, especially with the intention of taking her away, she buckles for the fight of her life.

Hayden on the other hand is a workaholic who doesn’t really have time for family or even love so when a one – night stand comes back into his life with a bomb that hehas a kid out in the world – the family values instilled in him, he goes forth to find the aforementioned kid and bring her to his family fold. What he did not expect was to find her in a family who has loved and protected her throughout her life.

Hayden and Alex have this slow simmering chemistry, mostly unconscious cause to them, they are the anti-thesis of what they “should” be attracted to, but mostly it’s because they did not expect to like each other.
Hayden is Alex’s enemy though it is hard for her to think of him so! Hayden isn’t supposed to fall for the woman who is taking care of his kid – but he does and now it is more of a problem than anything!

This romance is sweet to the core, I loved how these two characters fall for each other due to the exact same reasons they wanted to hate each other. This book is for those times when you want to be reminded of that sweetness that can exist when we meet the one person capable of getting through our defenses.

I received a copy of this story through NetGalley from Entangled Publishing for an honest review. This is the 2nd book about 3 "sisters" who met in foster care. Each is single and has one child. In this case, Alex/Alexandra adopted Cassy as a baby and is now living with her 2 sisters and their children. Hayden finds out from a one night stand he is a father, but he's also not sure if she's saying it to blackmail him for his millions. Somehow he finds a PI who just happens to be Matt (book 1) and living with Alex's sister, Kate (which means he's living with Alex and Cassy as well).

The story centers around a month during December as he gets to know Cassy until the paternity test is completed. Victoria James has a talent for delicately and emotionally incorporating a social issue in her stories (down syndrome, bulimia, abuse, etc.). One of the issues in this book is Alex's fear of abandonment which is heightened with the possibility of Hayden taking Cassy away from her. Cassy is adorable and says some very mature and adult things for a 6 year old (even if she uses the wrong word, i.e. pathological instead of biological). My only "wait, what?" moment was

Overall, this is a quick and touching read (during Christmas) that continues the series. I'm anxious for Cara's story.

Victoria James is a new author to me and I really enjoyed how she told the story. It was filled with Christmas spirit and lots of emotions.

Hayden had a one night stand almost 7 years ago but now the woman is standing in front of him telling him he put the baby up for adoption. She wants a million dollars. Hayden wants to track down his kid before he makes any decisions which leads him to Alex.

Alex has adopted and raised the child as her own. She comes face to face to Hayden and wants to hate him but the more time they spend in each other's company Alex begins to fall.

I loved the characters and how Alex built a family with her foster sisters and her daughter.Hayden was for sure a charmer but he was also very honest. I enjoyed that the relationship went really slow and had a nice build up to them getting romantic since there was so much at stake.

Now I didn't read the first book in this series but I plan to and I will also read the next. I enjoyed how close the Foster sisters were and you can see how they all have there own stories to tell.

I enjoyed James' voice and how the story just flowed. I wouldn't say it was a quick read but time flew by because of the characters and this special town she created.

If you love happily ever after Christmas stories this one is for you!

My Review:
I have never read this author before, but she has a new fan. I loved this book so much.

Alex is a single mom who in a single week has had all her dreams threatened. She's been on the five-year savings plan to buy the bakery she works at, but suddenly the owner has to sell early. And her one joy in life is her adoptive daughter...who's supposed birth father has shown up to claim paternity.

Hayden is a hard-working multi-millionaire. He's spent his life trying to make up for a mistake he made when he was too young. So when a woman comes to him to tell him that she gave their baby up for adoption 6 years ago, he plans to become a father to that little girl...without much thought of what it will do to the woman who's adopted and loved her for the last 6 years. But it's not that Hayden is unfeeling...far from it. It's just he has to be part of his child's life, but his life is elsewhere. He's very cognizant to the fact that both mother and child will need visitation to make this transition work. What he doesn't count on is falling as much for the mother as he does the child.

Seriously, this was just the perfect holiday romance. The story set-up was perfect and heartwarming. Tons of heartstrings being tugged in the middle of incredible small town picturesque life and snowfall. No one in this book is the bad guy. It's so easy to see from all sides of it, which made my heart twist for the characters just that much more.

I loved the backstory between the three "sisters" and their three daughters. I need to go back and read book #1 now and am anxiously awaiting #3. It's just a great feel-good book and set within the middle of the Christmas season, it's one that I can definitely recommend to make you feel happier and better as you go into the magic that is the holidays. The romance is phenomenal in the middle of this heart wrenching conflict.

And let's just take a moment to note the perfection that is that cover. Honestly in my viewpoint, this is simply the PERFECT holiday cover. I love it so, so much. Everything about it...the snow, the couple where he's carrying her, the colors. So much LOVE!

Alex McAllister is settling in her new life in Still Harbor and getting ready to enjoy the holiday season with her chosen family. She was not expecting, however, to have her world turned upside down when her daughter's biological father comes calling threatening all she ever dreamed of.

Even though Hayden Brooks never wanted to be a father, now that there's a possibility that a child of his exists, he's determined to exercise his parental rights--consequences be dammed. But coming face to face with the woman who has raised his child brings forth unexpected emotions he's not quite ready to deal with. With Christmas approaching and Alex's attempts to draw out the truth Hayden finds himself spending time with Alex and Cassy and yearning for things he once thought forgotten--a family of his own.

What I enjoyed the most about this story was the way the author brought Hayden and Alex together. Especially the fact that she took the time to establish, grow and showcase the connection between Hayden and Alex. True, they shared a common bond in Cassy, but I appreciated the effort Victoria James put into allowing the reader to see that their connection ran deeper than the chemitry they shared and their mutual love for Cassy.

Hayden and Alex were great characters to get to know, but I think it was Hayden's growth that I enjoyed the most. It was a treat to see this workaholic allowing himself the chance for something more. I enjoyed seeing him unravel and yearning for something he had given up hope of ever having.

Falling for Her Enemy is the second book in the Still Harbor series and although it can be read as a stand alone, I would recommend the reader to pick up the first book in the series if only to truly experience the bond between Alex, her sisters and their daughters.

All in all, a heartwarming romantic emotional read.

Victoria James is an author who hits the spot every time. I've been waiting for Falling for Her Enemy since the moment I finished Falling for the P.I. and I absolutely devoured Alex and Hayden's story.

"You want to take my daughter away from me..."

Alex suffers trust issues; understandable considering she grew up in foster care. But having made a life with her family, foster-sisters Kate and Cara and their adopted daughters, her life is reasonably settled. Until Hayden turns up and drops the bombshell that he believes he may be her daughter's biological dad.

description

Victoria does what she does best and brings her reader a beautifully crafted, charming, sweet romance filled with emotion and a sprinkling of angst. Hayden was a hero who proved himself as the story progressed and, whilst he frustrated a little at first, he was a darling and he and Alex had a lovely chemistry, as did he and Cassy.

"I don't know if you know this, but she's not my pathological mother."
"Biological."
"Right. But she loves me just like a pathological mom."

Falling for Her Enemy was a complete pleasure to read and Cara's story can't come quick enough; that's how eager I am to return to the wonderful place that is Still Harbour.

This is a sweet, emotional read which is part of a trilogy but each can be read as standalones. This story is about Alexandra (Alex) McAllister, her little girl Cassy and Hayden Brooks. Alex and Cassy are single mom and daughter –she adopted Cassy when she was a baby because she knew what it was like to be unwanted. She was a product of the foster care system-her and her “3 sisters”. She and Cassy live in Still Harbour. She gets word that a man has shown up in town because he believes her daughter is his bio daughter. Now Alex is scared she will lose her adopted daughter to this handsome man who just wants to do a DNA test and take her and run. What can she due but fight for not only her daughter but fight for their future.
Hayden got word from an ex-girlfriend that she gave up their daughter for adoption several years ago without telling him. Now after tracking down that child, he is in town to do the DNA test and if the child is his, take her back home with him even knowing she has been adopted. But after meeting her beautiful adoptive mother, things aren’t so cut and dry anymore. This headstrong, alpha male is bowled over by a precious child, her sassy and sweet adoptive mother but still the emotions rule him. He doesn’t want to let love in his life . There are some emotional twists and turns in the story that take you til the every end. This is a good read and I do recommend the story , in fact, I will be looking for the next book in the series.

Very beautiful story! Hayden and Alex will steal your heart! This was such a moving story. My heart hurt throughout feeling the emotions Alex felt. And then it went out to Hayden, who only wanted to do right by his daughter. But the way he treated Alex was so sweet, so endearing, oh how I loved him. Alex was so afraid of her feelings for him. And that one scene at the B&B, just brought tears to my eyes. They were both in need of love and a family but too afraid to even think about the possibility. For me, this story just touched my heart and made me feel so in tune with all the characters.

Cassy was a gem and stole the story. How could anyone not love her! She was funny, sweet, very articulate for such a young age. And she connected instantly with Hayden. Her interactions with Alex made me smile, her easy acceptance of what her momma would tell her.

I loved this story, maybe more than the first one. I cannot wait for Cara's story.

Alex McAllister has built a good life for her and her adopted daughter Cassie. While it's not without it's challenges they are happy and that's what matters. All that is threatened when a knock on the door brings a man in to their lives who claims he might be Cassie's father. Hayden Brooks is rich, powerful, and devastatingly handsome. He never planned on being a father but if Cassie is his, he plans on being there for her and raising her himself. After getting Alex to agree to a paternity test and waiting for the results, Hayden spends time with Alex and Cassie and comes to realize what an incredible bond they have and that he desperately wants to share in that bond. Can he change his life to accommodate them? Will Alex let him regardless of the test results?

This is a wonderful story filled with great characters. It's a happy light read that you won't be able to put down. I highly recommend it.

When Victoria James writes a book, it’s no surprise that I’m going to like it. But when she writes a book where the heroine is sitting on the floor stuffing her face with cupcakes when she first meets the hero? I’m going to more than like it. I’m going to LOVE it (foodie for life). Which it’s a good thing I loved it because it would be a shame to be disappointed after that freaking cliffhanger at the end of the first book. Ahemmm. You can’t just drop a bomb like THAT on a woman Matt!!!

We first met Alex in Falling for the PI. She’s one of Kate’s caring sisters, as well as the mother to six-year-old Cassy. The whole premise of Falling for Her Enemy is that Alex’s family unit is being threatened. Threatened by the big shot business man Hayden Brooks.

You see, Hayden was approached by an alleged one-night stand from years ago who claimed to have given Hayden’s daughter up for adoption–a daughter that Hayden never knew about. Being a man with strong morals–a man who likes to try and correct the mistakes of his past–Hayden immediately gets to work on searching for his daughter. *Cue the music of DOOM.* Turns out, Cassy may be Hayden’s daughter, which means that Alex may lose the one person that means the most to her.

Well, take me on an emotional journey why don’t ya? This one was tough because I could understand both characters’ point-of-views.

Alex: Who is this guy to come in here, wave his money around, and take my baby from me?

Hayden: I have a daughter I wasn’t even given the chance to be a father to, and as her biological father (potentially) I have rights.

But while I could understand their point-of-views, I couldn’t always agree with the way they treated each other. But that’s kind of the reality of a custody battle, right? It’s messy and people act recklessly. So I can appreciate the realness of the situation even though what Hayden and Alex are going through isn’t quite a custody battle. Besides, I couldn’t dwell on their bad behavior for long. I mean, I would be tense waiting for a paternity test to happen, too. Three people’s lives and fate could change any minute.

Also, you eventually get to watch these two characters grow in their own ways, but also with each other. I loved watching Hayden fall in love with Alex. I love that he can see how Alex is a good mother to Cassy–the best mother, a mother in all the ways that count. I love how Cassy wraps him around her little finger–exactly what should happen between a daughter and a father. And Cassy, you gotta love that spunky squirt! I love that Alex helps Hayden reconcile with his past (and vice versa). Alex and Cassy both help Hayden become a better man–a man that they can love without reservations.

And just so I can throw around the word “love” some more…I LOVED that the setting was Christmastime. That Christmas tree scene–priceless. The snowed-in at the creepy inn scene–MY GOD, I LOVE YOU. Readers can look forward to seeing more of Matt, Kate, and Janie, too. Their fist Christmas together is just adorable. Tis’ the season to be really, really jolly! Someone get me some Christmas cookies and hot chocolate, please!

As far as other secondary characters go, more is revealed about Kate and Alex’s other sister, Cara. I’m pretty sure that her book is going to confuse me and hurt my heart. I’m not at all prepared for the final installment to rip out my heart and stomp it. and stomp it. and stomp on it some more. WHY DID YOU LEAVE, JACK?? WHY? I’m going to have the tissues ready, but I know it will be worth it in the end because I can already tell that the love between the two main characters is going to be powerful. Plus, Cara has her own daughter, and I’m a sucker for romances with cute children in them.

Take a chance on this series! Go ahead and yell at me if you regret it, but I will warn you that I will probably yell back.

Falling for Her Enemy is the second book in the Victoria James-penned Still Harbor contemporary romance series and takes place some time after its predecessor, which already gave readers an idea that this sequel would be abut Alex McAllister and her daughter Cassy. The story here was so different from the one that Kate Abbott and Matt Lane shared in Falling for the P.I. and I mean that in a totally good way. The quality of the writing is still as good as ever, and I feel that the storytelling was even better here, with the story flowing seamlessly from start to finish. The threat of someone who wants to find out if Cassy is really his daughter comes in the form of Hayden Brooks and the fact that he can offer everything that Cassy could ever dream because of his financial standing is just one more reason why Alex considers him an enemy. After all, the life Alex has created for Cassy is a good one and the bond they share rivals any other mother-and-child's. Adoption was a means to an end and Alex and Cassy are devoted to each other.

One of the best things about this series is its distinctive cast of memorable characters. Alex was such a great heroine in that she was self-sufficient but leaned on her sisters whenever she needed them. She was a wonderful mom to Cassy and even though it took a good while for her to trust Hayden, she saw the kind of person he was instead of focusing on him as the man who could take away her daughter. Even if Hayden did come off as somewhat distant and cold in the beginning, the man simply needed to reach his own comfort level. After all, it isn't every day that you realize that you could be in the same town as the daughter you never knew existed. He may be wealthy but he isn't arrogant and his generosity isn't a way for him to manipulate others or to make them feel as if they're beneath him. And then there was dear Cassy, who was difficult to resist whenever she misused a particular word and the fact that she was trying so hard to play matchmaker for both Alex and Hayden made her such an adorable little kid all throughout.

I certainly have no complaints about this book and can't really think of anything that I need to point out in terms of missteps. Victoria James took this up a notch and if I liked the first book, I undoubtedly loved this one. With that little scene involving Alex's other sister Cara Hamilton has me mighty intrigued, what with those comments that both Alex and Kate made. I know that the third book is slated for a 2016 release but I've already added it to my to-be-read list because after reading the first two books, I'm confident that this final addition to an already favorite series will be more than worth the wait. I'm not just highly recommending that you read Falling for Her Enemy, but I'm highly suggesting that you read Falling for the P.I. and read them in order. The connection that Kate, Alex, and Cara have, one that's passed on and shared by their three adoptive daughters--Janie, Cassy, and Beth--is the truest love story in the series and I'm glad each one of them ends up with the best possible guys. I'm giving Falling for Her Enemy five stars. ♥

The concept for this series really is an interesting one and from the first book, I was interested in seeing how things would change for each character as they fell in love and added to their little family.

Alex McAllister's abandonment by her mother and her subsequent stay in foster care have made it difficult for her to trust anyone, with the exception of her sisters of the heart. Together, these three women have created the warm, loving and happy family they always longed for. Unfortunately for Alex, her carefully crafted world is in danger of tumbling down due to the arrival of an attractive stranger claiming to be the biological father of her adopted daughter. All in time for Christmas, off course.

Hayden Brooks has been focused on building up the family business alongside his father and has been recently honored as an up-and-coming businessman. Now a one-night stand from seven years ago has come forward with the news that he fathered her child, a child she gave up for adoption at birth and is threatening to expose him as a deadbeat father unless he pays up. Hayden hasn't given a thought to having children but he's not going to abandon his responsibility to his child and he's determined to bring her home, if paternity is established. Going to Still Harbor to meet his daughter is supposed to be a quick trip but turns out to be anything but when he faces stiff opposition from her very attractive adopted mother. His attraction to her is unexpected and he finds himself extending his time in Still Harbor. But will he be able to break Alex's heart and take Cassy from the only mother she's ever known if the test results prove that he's her father? Or will he be able to walk away from them, if the tests are negative? Whatever the choice, someone is bound to get hurt.

I really enjoyed this story and felt sorry for Alex as she battled the fear of losing her dreams: her daughter and the business she had hoped to purchase, especially because of the sentimental reason behind it. Hayden came across as a rich and disconnected jerk sometimes, but his own history and the way he cared for Alex made it easy to love him.

FALLING FOR HER ENEMY was an enjoyable read and much lighter than the previous book. The best part for me was Alex's daughter Cassy and her smart mouth, and I also liked the little unit Alex, Cassy and Hayden became. There were a few issues, but nothing major enough to affect my enjoyment and I look forward to the next book in the series.

The safe world she’s created has just fallen out from under Alex’s feet. Millionaire Hayden Brooks is claiming that her adopted daughter, Cassy is in fact his biological daughter. He wants a paternity test to prove it and when it comes back positive he intends to take Cassy home.. his home across the country. The second blow of the day, while nowhere near the panic of losing her daughter still kills the idea of buying the bakery she had set her heart on as a way to secure the future for herself and her daughter.

Hayden was blindsided by the obviously slutty bid for money from the woman standing at his door. But… if there was the slightest chance that she wasn’t lying through her teeth he had to know for certain. When he made the decision to go to Still Harbor a day early and catch the woman who had adopted the little girl that might be his, it was with a combination of goals. He couldn’t sit around any longer wondering he had to see this child. And by arriving a day early he’d put this woman off balance. As a successful businessman he knew that any advantage was a good one. The last thing he expected was the flash of attraction when he met Alex or for the absolute terror on her face that she quickly tried to cover up. Until that moment he hadn’t really thought what it would mean to the woman who had raised Cassy if it turned out that he was in fact her father. His mission had been to get to his daughter, save her from whatever situation she was in and bring her home. He never actually considered that she was in a loving home with a woman who was her mother in every sense of the word.

In the last weeks leading up to Christmas, Cassy will work her magical charm on Hayden as they each seem to find a special bond between them. Hayden and Alex will spend time together, unwillingly on Alex’s part while they wait out the paternity test results. As they begin to get to know each other walls come down, slightly and Alex begins to fight a true attraction to this man who could destroy her so easily… in so many ways.

Falling For Her Enemy is an emotional and intriguing story. Alexandra is certainly a multi-layered woman with a history that is as heartbreaking as it is inspiring. Hayden isn’t truly the bad guy, he’s a man who simply wants his daughter in his life. If he went about that the wrong way at first, at least he learns quickly. I enjoyed Alex and Hayden’s romance as they and Alex’s extended unique family gather around to be certain that one little girl gets the best possible results from this situation. I enjoyed meeting up with the couple from the first story in this series… and a hint about the next to come.

If you enjoy a romance with an almost instant attraction but a slow build up to acknowledging that, if the magic of Christmas working its unique spell on a purely business minded man and if a strong, determined, wounded woman who will fight for her daughter intrigues you – then you should pick up Falling For Her Enemy right now.

I just started to read holiday-theme books, and Falling for Her Enemy was full of holiday spirit that just made it enjoyable to read.

From the very beginning we get to meet Alex McAllister, who has done anything and everything to provide for her adopted daughter. With the hopes of buying the bakery that she has been working at for years, she is disappointed when the owner informs her that she will be selling the property soon. With no idea of how she is going to get the money, she decides to focus on what she can do now that her daughter's biological father is said to be looking for her now that he knows that he has a daughter. Not knowing what he wants terrifies her, and the possibility of having her daughter taken away from her is not an option for her. So as she waits for the stranger to show up at Still Harbor she plans her next move. That all soon changes when the stranger does show up unexpectedly at the bakery, and when she sees him eye-to-eye, she knows that is going to be in deep trouble now that she knows what he looks like and how nice he seems to be.

Hayden Brooks has a very successful career in the city, but his playboy ways have come back to haunt him when his ex/one-night-stand gets word of his success and has come back to tell him that he fathered a baby with her. In return of her silence she wants money, but Hayden is quick to let her know that she is not going to get anything until he finds his little girl. So now he is at Still Harbor ready to take back what is his, but not before performing a paternity test. With the holidays approaching he knows that he doesn't have a lot of time to prove that Alex's daughter is his, but he is willing to do anything to prove that he is going to be a good father to both Alex and the little girl. Which soon changes when his relationship with Alex gets stronger as they get to know each other, but the surprising revelation at the end changes the course of their lives.

I really liked the overall idea of the book, the characters are well thought out, and their back stories made the book that much more interesting to read. I could understand the decisions that Alex had to make in order to protect herself and give another a second chance. Though it is a full novel, it felt like a novella to me. The characters don't seem to grow much, and it all just happens in a very short time. There were things that were left unanswered as well, which could have made the story complete and whole. Overall the story does make you feel like it's Christmas already, and it really has the perfect festive romance to make you want to pick up this holiday. I still recommend it if you are looking to read a quick festive read. :)

I have received a copy of this book from NetGalley/Entangled Publishing for an honest review. "Falling for Her Enemy" by Victoria James is book two in the "Still Harbor" series. This can be read as a standalone, but you will enjoy getting to know the characters better if you go back and read book one "Falling for the P.I.". This is Alex McAllister and Hayden Brooks' story.

The writer once again did a great job of creating a story with so many emotions woven throughout the story. The reader feels the characters hurt, pain, passion, and happiness. Alex has had a rough life and when she, Kate, and Cara form this unique family and she adopts Cassy her life is on the road to what she has always wanted. The next thing that Alex is planning for is to eventually buy the bakery where she works. Well, things are not going as planned. Alex finds out that Hayden Brooks could be Cassy's biological father and he wants a paternity test. If that is not enough stress, then Alex finds out that the owner wants to sell the bakery now instead of five years down the road. Alex feels her world spinning out of control.

Alex and Hayden meet and are setting up how they are going to handle this situation and whether she will agree to a paternity test. They are immediately attracted to each other, but Hayden is here to take her daughter away. If the paternity test shows that he is the father, Alex's world will fall apart. Alex pushes the attraction away because she has to remember that Hayden is the enemy. Hayden is in a different world where he is learning to see and consider other people's feelings. Will they give themselves a chance at love?

You fall in love with both Alex and Hayden and all the characters. Hayden turns out to a really romantic and sensitive guy. Now, as Alex and Hayden's relationship changes what results are they really hoping for from the paternity test? If the test is positive, then will Hayden take Cassy away from Alex? If the test is negative, then Hayden will not have any ties to them and will he leave? I really enjoyed the book! I just could not put it down and read it in one sitting. It goes to show you that being a family doesn't have to be blood related, it's people that care and love one another is what makes a family. Book three cannot come out soon enough.

Falling for her Enemy is a wonderful, warm-hearted book from author Victoria James. The story grabs you right from the startling prologue, and keeps you engaged until the very last paragraph. This is the love story between hopeful bakery owner Alex McAllister, and Hayden Brooks, an extremely successful businessman. Alex and Hayden have sizzling yet complicated chemistry, and their blossoming relationship is replete with discovery, understanding and love.

Hayden is shocked to learn that he may have a seven-year-old daughter. As a result, he temporarily relocates to the small town of Still Harbor to obtain a paternity test from Cassy, his "maybe" daughter. However, in order to get what he wants, he has to convince Alex, Cassy's adoptive single mother, to do the test. Alex was abandoned as a child, so she has a real hard time dealing with this new development. If the test is positive, Hayden plans to take Cassy home with him. With some apprehension, Alex lets Hayden into their lives and as a result, a forever love is realized.

The best part of this story is all the interactions with Cassy. She is a very funny young girl and her use of big words out of context is absolutely hysterical. She adds a cuteness factor that cannot be duplicated. Alex and Hayden are an interesting couple and as they get to know each other, they fall madly in love. Regardless of the results of the paternity test, they have formed a connection as a couple and as a family.

I liked this refreshing and original holiday novella. The entire story takes place around Christmas time, which only adds to the positive family vibe of togetherness. This book is filled with raw emotions from both main characters. When Alex told her story, my heart was aching for her. When Hayden got emotional, my eyes teared. I immediately connected with Alex, Hayden and Cassy, and there was never a moment that I did not want them to form a family. The secondary characters are quite unique in their own right and add a ton of harmony to the present happenings.

Alex McAllister doesn't find it easy to trust after being abandoned by those that are supposed to love her unconditionally. So, when Hayden Brooks arrives in town claiming he's her adopted daughter's biological father, she doesn't know what to do except try to stay away from him. Especially when he could destroy not only the happy life she's built with her daughter, but could also break her heart.

I loved the first book of this series, and this one was just as incredible with it's sweet, fast-paced plot, encompassing a wounded heroine afraid to lose the most important person in her life, and a hero determined to prove that she can trust someone outside of her family. As for the dialogue, it was intense due to the heroine's back story. But it also provided fun, light moments between Alex and Hayden, or either of them with Cassy, the little girl that has brought so much happiness to Alex's life.

Both characters were amazing, and proved hard not to like. My heart broke for the heroine as her back story was tragic, and it was understandable why she found it hard to trust Hayden, even though it seemed she wanted to because, of their intense chemistry and the kind, caring way he treated her daughter. Alex is independent, hard-working, and kind-hearted. That it was no wonder she adopted a child since she had so much love to give, and proved that, by trying to provide the best possible life for her daughter. While Hayden, he's honorable, assertive, and isn't afraid to push Alex to get her to see reason when she's being difficult. Because he needs to know whether Cassy is his biological daughter.

Overall, I loved this book and how every time they bantered -- whether it was friendly or not -- increased the sexual tension. It made for a fun yet highly emotional tale that has me looking forward to the next story in the series. As there was an interesting development with Cara -- one of Alex's sisters -- in this one. I would definitely recommend this book, if you've read the first in the series (Kate & Matt's story - Falling for the P.I.), or if you enjoy highly emotional reads.
