Scales by Pauline Creeden - 2 stars I really wanted to like this book, but it didn't work for me. It couldn't hold my attention and nothing much happened, the plot moved along very slowly without any direction and then the ending was very sudden, making me wonder if this is the first book in a series or if it is supposed to end this way. I couldn't really connect to any of the characters as we simply don't learn enough about them. I also had hoped we would learn more about the mermaid culture, but the story mostly focuses on Verona trying to survive. There is a minor sort of romance plot line thrown in that didn't really worked for me. Read my whole review here
Ink: A Mermaid Romance by Melanie Karsak - 4 stars Ink was a fun and exciting book, the plot was well done and a lot happens during the course of the book. The ending felt a bit rushed, but overall I enjoyed the story and it kept my attention. Ink was a great main character, but I got less of a feel for the side characters. I also thought the romance fell a bit flat, it all happened too fast and was a bit too insta love like. The world building is very interesting and I liked learning about the humans and mer's and how some could shift into animals. It could be a bit confusing at times with all the different terms for the shifters that were used, but I did get used to it after awhile. I wish we had seen more of the world as it was very interesting. Read my whole review here
Of Ocean and Ash by A. R. Draeger
Deep Breath by J. M. Miller
At the Heart of the Deep by Carrie Wells
The Mermaid's Den by Ella Malone
The Water is Sweeter by Eli Constant
The Glass Mermaid by Poppy Lawless
An Officer & a Mermaid by Blaire Edens
How to be a Mermaid by Erin Hayes - 4 stars this was a fun and enjoyable mermaid story. I really enjoyed this book. The mermaid aspect and the explanation of why tara changes into one was well done. There's an original twist surrounding Tara and I liked seeing the pieces fall on it's place and her finding out what to do next and how to handle the change. I didn't really feel the romance and there are some questions left unanswered about the underwater world and society, but I didn't mind too much as the interesting story made up for it. I would recommend this if you are looking for an enjoyable short story about mermaids with an original twist Read my whole review here
Cold Water Bridegroom by B. Brumley
Immersed by Katie Hayoz - 4 stars This book nicely blends different genres in one story. This book has paranormal, romance, steampunk and historical elements and it all fits together nicely. I was really impressed by the blend of genres and how it created an interesting world. I liked the characters and enjoyed learning more about Melusine her past. The romance was well done, although i would've enjoyed to see more about the two of them and how they felt in love as it felt like things happened rather quickly even though they have a past together. The world building was well done, although it also leaves some thing open. I really liked the setting in Chicago and almost didn't believe it was real with how they raised the city form the mud. It was very interesting and I enjoyed learning this tidbit of history. Read my whole review here
This was kind of a bad anthology. The stories featured read like introduction to fiction writing stories with half-baked plots and lukewarm endings. I expected more based on the high ratings.
In this case, you can definitely judge a boom/collection by its cover and the judgement isn’t good.
