A simple and well-illustrated look at the final months of the Second World War in Europe, with lots of maps and photographs and newspaper headlines. It is one of a whole series of Time-Life illustrated books on World War II which I bought at a second-hand booksale in an old church in the Hunter Valley (with thanks to my brother Nick who lent me the money to buy them, then carried the heavy box out to the car.)
A triumphant, cathartic volume full of many individual stories. The battle for Prague feels thrown in at the end with not enough pictures; we could have taken some space from the siege of Berlin to do that more credit.
Seemed a bit more disjointed than other books in the series. At least two two-page spread photos had the primary figure right smack in the page join, making them unrecognizable.
Not very deep but a great overview (which is the purpose of the series). Glad I finally finished all 39 books in the series, now I can find them a new home to free up space for new books.
This volume concludes the battle for Europe and includes last battles, the death of Hitler, Russian army actions and relations to other allies and postwar effects. It is quite a good book, and includes the definitive account of the battle for Berlin.
Bought this Life Time series in the early 1980's on WWII, a volume came to the house every 2 or 3 months so I could take my reading. It was very informative and enjoyable read, I still use it for reference.
