Really good

This was a good shifter book. I wish I could have given it a 5 but, I kept falling asleep. NO fault of the book. It was some medicine I was taking. So I kept falling asleep, and losing my place, then I kept not being able to find it, over, and over. So, it was frustrating. What I got of it was really good though.

Nika didn't know the dating site she signed up for was going to be the man who would be her fate in her life. When she meets Nathan she doesn't realize her life is about to change drastically.

Nathan is preparing to become the Alpha of his pack. His meddling sister though has set him up with a dating site and he takes a chance with Nika. However Nika doesn't know that shifters exist. When it becomes evident they do Nika is busy trying to navigate in a new world she never knew about all the while trying to figure out her role in it.

This was good but it was missing chemistry for me. I liked the idea of this one but it just didn't sweep me away. I would try more from this author to see what comes next.

As a lover of paranormal romance, I had high hopes for The Next Alpha. White is a new-to-me author and the premise of the story was interesting. Although I've read other paranormal dating type books, White's book focused less on the dating aspect and more on what happened as a result of that one day. The story was unique and contained a good amount of interesting elements. The story was well written in the "creating an interesting story" arena. However, the story struggled in the dialogue and word use department. The story was too verbose at times when simplicity would have worked best. The were many metaphors and similes (bad ones) used to describe the "sexy" times between the characters that were cringe worthy and painful to read. For example: "His stiff member snapped to attention like elastic..." That was just one of many that kept the intimate moments from being truly intimate, and caused them to take on a "cheesy" feel.

Beyond that, the story had good bones. I was a little disappointed by the ending. Without being too spoilery,I thought that Nathan, as the alpha, dropped the ball at the end of the story, leaving me to question his alpha-ness.

Storyline is OK, everything else is bad - read on KU

This was not an enjoyable read. I only finished it because of the plot and because I really wanted to read a shifter book and couldn't find much else that looked interesting. I will say this one is more complex than the plethora of bad shifter books out there that are so trite.

But even with the plot, the twist didn't make much sense to me. It was weak. You think the bad guy is one person, which would have made sense. Although part of the explanation of who the bad guy was reasonable but part not. It also wasn't shocking to find out who it was because after you eliminate the 1st bad guy, there was only one person left as to who it could be and there were a lot of hints dropped.

The writing style is horrendous. It is very basic, but then she would write things in a way that was too flowery. It came off as trying too hard. Way too hard. And the worst parts were the sex scenes. I think these were worst written sex scenes I have ever read. Sure, there are plenty of other authors that skimp on details, and those scenes aren't good. These were descriptive but she would use imagery and metaphors that were so very, very bad. These descriptions were undeniably unsexy. A couple were even gross. And her descriptions of Nika's body's reactions were weird.

Nathan wasn't alpha. He wasn't even alpha enough to be an enforcer in most shifter books. He did become more clever but he really needed his sister's help in strategy.

There was a point where they have a single survivor from a group that attacked them and killed maybe hundreds. And everyone thinks Nathan killed him. Nika gets angry that he did. But in a shifter world, it would be weakness to not kill him. What Nathan did was smarter but had he not needed to do what he did, he still wouldn't have killed him. Torturing him would have even been reasonable but killing him definitely was.

Another thing I didn't like about the shifter world was their healing. They didn't seem to heal quickly, most of the time, and they were killed too easily. In most shifter worlds, a car accident won't kill shifters unless it was there is a fire or explosion. Nathan's parents died in car accident without fire or an explosion.

As many others have said, in the middle of all of the simple writing, with all the weird metaphors, the author throws in some $2 words. Or at least words most of us don't use in every day speaking. I don't think I ran across words I didn't know but found their placement odd. And sometimes in ways that meant the opposite of what I think she meant. Certainly in ways where I would have thought the words meant something different based on contextual clues if I didn't already know them.

All in all, I found this book to be a disaster and will add this author to the short list of authors I never want to read again, even for free on KU. I would have been unhappy if I had paid even $1 for this. I also do not understand why this is part of a series when the books have absolutely nothing to do with one another.

A good story

The story was very good. There were a few grammatical errors but you can overlook these. I actually would have liked a few more chapters of them getting to know each other at first.

Jasmine does it again!

This author is just fabulous! She delivers an excellent read with enough sexy moments and an actual plot line with twists and turns. Her stories are exactly what I want to read. So in love and will be reading the next book in the series!

Wow. I just turned the last page, so give me a second to gather up my thoughts because right now all I can think of is… Wow.

From the cover description you might be lured into thinking that you are about to read a lighthearted romance. You never see this story coming from the description. Never.

The Next Alpha is an intense, well thought out, deeply involved story of two people who come together for a first date — and nothing will ever be the same for them again.

Nathan is in the running to become the Alpha of his pack. He is up against his cousin, a man who is more brawn than brain and really appears unable to take on the role of the Alpha. However, his sister is the brains of this set of twins, and her ambition and cunning will go a long way to making her brother the pack leader.

Nika has no social life. Her roommate suggest that she check out a particular dating website. One that she doesn’t know is in the business of pairing up shifters and humans. Actually, Nika has no idea that shifters actually exist. When Nathan, at her request, drops her off in a park for a bit of alone time she will come face to face with the nasty side of shifters in an attack. Fortunately Nathan had seen the two hooded figures on his way out of the park and followed them, jumping in to defend Nika. When Nika is badly injured in the attack, Nathan calls for help to take her back to his family home – and Nika’s introduction to the shifter world has begun in earnest.

From this point onward Nika will be tossed into the shifter world and the battle for power. Betrayal, intrigue, mixed messages… and a love for all time will be thrust at her. She will need to decide who to trust very quickly and some of her decisions will have life changing consequences.

Nathan and Nika have a very sensuous relationship. And their sex scenes get very hot and heavy. There is a reason this is considered an 18+ adult novel. But do not be fooled into thinking this story is simply about sex, it’s not. This couple has a very healthy sexual appetite – and so much more beyond the bedroom.

I was captivated by The Next Alpha. The story is intense, suspenseful and well thought out. I am a reader who can easily dispense with my reality and fall into the author’s world as long as there is enough worldbuilding to make it real to me. I had no trouble at all believing this story, and enjoyed every single moment of my time with Nathan, Nika and crew.

The Next Alpha is a stand alone novel. Yet, I do wish that I would be able to return to this world again. Well, Nathan’s sister is still single… so maybe there is hope. If you enjoy a complex story, an erotic love and enough suspense and action to make a movie… then you will enjoy this story.

Choppy and Flat

Nathan is a werewolf looking for a mate to better his odds of becoming the new alpha, and not just any mate, but a human one to show his people he understands the direction of interaction between humans and shifters.

Nika is a human looking for a decent guy, and her roommate points her in the direction of a dating website. Little does she know it's a website for shifters (and the humans who are wise to the world of shifters).

After their first date, Nika is attacked, and they become a team to figure out the threat and eliminate it. Clues lead them on suspicion, but after a twist, they realise how wrong they really were.

Nathan came off as weak and stupid. Nika came off as whiny and puny. She was selfish and annoying. I was hoping the end was her death, but I was yet again disappointed.

I don't believe Jasmine White really knew how she wanted to end the book when she started, or maybe she did but changed her mind halfway through. The first half, we believe we predictably figured put who the villain was, or at least the mastermind. It was transparent and obvious, but then the true villain is figured out. It doesn't really fit the characteristic s of a typical bad guy. He wasn't even psycho.

The idea was decent, but the delivery was awful. Jasmine White tried her best to be descriptive, using terms I have never read in a romance, and for good reason. Jasmine tried her best to be realistic, but it came out gross, referencing to bulbous penis ends and slick pubic hair. I know. It's gross. I eventually had to cut my losses and skip to the end.

The grammatical errors were plenty, and I mean overwhelmingly so. In fact, it was part of the reason the story didn't flow. It was distracting to say the least. Surely the author could have read her own book once to fix half the errors. Maybe English isn't Jasmine's first language. It would explain a lot. Modern Americans do not say "aye" or "eh." Another annoyance.

The story wasn't paced. Some places felt rushed. It felt like Jasmine tried to get past the boring parts because she was bored with writing it.

I don't think I'll be reading any other books from this author. First impressions failed here.

Learn your words before writing them.

This book was just so bad. I quit reading it around 33% and then skipped around because it just kept getting worse.
First the H have a gene-mutation that gives him and his sister silver hair making them seem more mature... Great stick with that. Next chapter they have raven hair. Hmmm, curiouser and curiouser.
Then the H is set to be Alpha. He is the wussiest alpha of them all. I have a stuffed teddy bear that is more alpha than this character.
Finally, the word choices. Using unique and interesting and challenging words is great if it matches your writing style, however if your style is basic with a lot of mistakes don't have a thesaurus nearby hoping that the use of uncommon word will elevate your writing style. Also, know what the words mean; e.g., "ecstatic doldrums of endorphins". I mean, great name for an emo rock band on antidepressants, but horrible way to describe post sex bliss.

Jasmine White is an awesome writer. So one does not really have any qualms about how good her books are gonna be. "The Nest Alpha" is no exception.

Nathan and his sister Clara are tying to make sure Nathan is the next Alpha for the pack as is their cousin Flores is trying to make sure her twin brother Dean is the next Alpha.

Clara signs Nathan up fora paranormal dating agency as does Nika's gay room mate and friend James. They things start to heat up.

Jasmine has you thinking that one person is trying to get rid of Nathan and Nika then a complete turn of events and your thinking somebody else. the shock is who is actually trying to get rid of them. Jasmine has you in complete knots by the time the truth comes out.

A must read you will not be disappointed. That is why Jasmine is good at what she does. See if you can figure out the good guys from the bad before the end of the book.

Nathan and Nika don't expect much from their date. They were both pushed to the matchmaking website by others. Nika didn't even know it was for shifters to meet humans until she sees a wolf transformation on their date. She focuses on work and doesn't really date. Nathan is fighting to become alpha and a mate would help persuade some that he is the best choice. The first date goes in a direction neither could predict. It leads to danger and betrayal as well as love and belonging.

It is a very well-developed story with compelling characters. They are complex and not what they appear to be on the surface. The story did not go in the predictable way I expected and I enjoyed the journey. I like to be surprised. Nathan and Nika are a good fit for one another and make a great team.

I received a copy in return for a honest review.

Surprisingly good

I didn't really think this would be as good as it was but since I've read others by Ms White I decided to try this one. Once I started reading this book I didn't put it down until I finished. It has a mystery included in this book rather then just a "shifter" romance. I liked this and would recommend it to readers.

Skip it. It was choppy, flat, and awkward in every sense of the word. I'll give credit that I didn't see the twist coming- then again I didn't think the author would mention pubic hair no less than 15x in the course of the book. Really wanted to like her since she has her books on ku, but I will not be reading more from this author.

She feels safe

This date has definitely taken her out of her comfort zone. Yet she wouldn't have it any other way. Till they figure out what is happening he'll have to keep her close. Great story would be checking out this author for other works.

I love shifter books and the way Jasmine incorporates the human and animal sides is what makes it so believable. This story and characters is full of twists and turns.

Not too bad

This story was well thought out and written. I didn't notice any obvious grammatical errors. The sex scenes, though, just felt emotionally flat. Still a good story.
