Understanding Life After Death: An Exploration of What Awaits You, Me and Everyone We've Ever Known

Rate this book
A life-long exploration of the mysterious world of afterlife research has led to this book. The notion of a world beyond this one is firmly rooted into our popular culture, as countless strange phenomena in life point us toward this direction--from hauntings, to near-death experiences, and many more encounters with the "beyond". By venturing all the way through this rabbit-hole, Cyrus Kirkpatrick has come out from the other end, still with his marbles intact, and with the intention of finally putting all the pieces together to describe the reality behind what appears to be a multi-planar universe that we all exist as part of. A topic that must be ultimately rooted in science and not the New Age aisle, "Understanding Life After Death" is hopefully an attempt to push the subject in the right direction.

I have been studying the afterlife for about 15 years, half of the young author's life, but I have to say he has a fantastic grasp on the subject for someone so young. The fact that he would even be interested in the topic at his is a subject of fascination to me. But, all of that aside, this is one of the better books I have read on the subject. If you're a fence sitter, someone who hasn't made his mind up about the possibility of life after death and you're willing to skeptically, but open-mindedly examine the evidence this a good place to start. If you know someone who says "There is no evidence for the belief in an afterlife"this is a great book to get him started on the path of examining the evidence. Even as someone who has been 99% convinced for a number of years now and someone who has read a great deal of the sources that Cyrus refers to I found this book to be of great value because of the insights Cyrus has come into about the nature of the afterlife. The fact that there is an afterlife is a given for me. Now I want to know what it's like.

I heard Cyrus being interviewed on a PodCast and would have passed on another afterlife evidence book at this point because I am thoroughly convinced. What intrigued me about this book were his out of body experiences and the fact that he seemed to have a done a great job of sifting through all of the data to come up with a working model of the afterlife. Too many make the mistake of thinking they know everything there is to know based on their own NDE or based on reading an account or two. Some say we MUST reincarnate until we get it right. Some say there are 7 realms that we try to advance through getting higher and higher until we merge with "God". Some say it's summer all of the time. Some say it's a completely non-physical realm. We don't have a body- everything is mental. Well, if you were to just take Earth and send someone here for a day and ask them to report what Earth is like how different would their descriptions be based on whether they landed in Paris or in a third world country? What if they visited Arizona or New York in the winter? Any one visit would tell us only a tiny fragment of what life on Earth is really like. Cyrus proposes a multiplanar (multi-dimensional) universe with an almost infinite number of environments. And perhaps these planes or dimensions are as distinct as some would have us believe with a fixed number and you progressing up the levels like you level up in a video game. Many have said the "lower levels", the more physical ones, are inferior. Cyrus says "not so fast". Maybe some prefer the more physical levels.

I really liked some of the new concepts he introduced. I won't share them all here so as to not spoil the book. He does a great job of not only talking about the afterlife, but answers the all important "So what?" question. It's great to ponder the after life, but how does that impact how I live day to day?

One big exception I had to take with him is he cites a psychologist who has come up with a model of grief (resilience model I believe- Dr. George Bonanno) who seems to think that if we just properly understand the afterlife, we can avoid grief all together. I have one word for that- nonsense. Mediums who lose loved ones still grieve. Mediums who lose loved ones actually visit mediums. I recall hearing an interview of a woman (Dr. Mary Neale) who had an NDE, was given all knowledge of how everything works together for good, was told her son would precede her in death and STILL mourned when he died. When we know that someone we love has crossed over and we will not see her in the flesh again, we grieve no matter what our belief in the afterlife.

I did enjoy the book very much and feel I have a more complete and realistic view of the afterlife after having read it. I understand Cyrus is workign on a second book on the topic. I'm looking forward to reading it.

A comprehensive view of afterlife studies!

A more objective view of the Afterlife. Combines spirituality beliefs with scientific research. An easy to read way to explore more about this fascinating topic. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to really explore a comprehensive approach to afterlife studies.

Its a good book to make you think

Disclaimer this is the first type of book i read in this area. The first part of the book was boring for me. Luckily i continued to find a great reading about near death experiences and his evidence to back his writing.
The only thing i didnt like was at times narrow viewpoint for what matters like religion and lack of. Alot of people come from a limited viewpoints of what a possible next adventure would be. I would think there should be more positive and negative would be, so more people can relate more to.
Overall i will continue to research up the points he made as well as other cases to be made. This is a book with logic and reasoning behind most of his points. Its opened up my mind for possible new ideas.

Excellent though I liked liked his second book better, still an excellent introduction to the afterlife

Excellent though I liked liked his second book better, this is an excellent introduction to thinking about the afterlife. It is also broad discussion of evidence for the permanence of consciousness. The didactic information is comparable to many other books in this genre but this particular book shines when author delves into the philosophical implications of this material. Such discussions are always of a high caliber, well thought out and expressed with clarity and eloquence. I really enjoyed these discussions and look forward to more from Mr Kirkpatrick. Definitely worth your time.

Great read

A book that objectively looks at the evidence for an afterlife and presents it in a really ready to read and entertaining format. Highly recommended for those who are interested in how the afterlife could function based on our current understanding of physics.

Rich with information and compelling anecdotes

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It's one of those books where just a paragraph or two provides excellent food for thought and provokes reflection and insights. Loved it.

Don't know who thought up most of the drivel and worse published it. You either believe this author or dont. I don't think this author believes any of it themselves

Rational

Cyrus gives a substantial topic more substance. Whoever closes there mind to the topic of life after death closes their mind to common sense. Great read!

A very good book that explores the afterlife and what awaits us after we cross over. The author uses very good examples to show us proof of the afterlife. A very interesting book and well recommended.
