Alvin Tan is an intriguing cocktail of stories. By his 22nd birthday, he had become a Singapore national top student, a scholarship holder at arguable the best law school in Asia, started a profitable web technology company, and amassed a modest net worth of over S$100,000 by getting lucky in the stock market. By his 25th birthday, however, he had published nude photographs and hardcore sex videos of himself on the internet, morphed into an Islamophobe, been expelled from university, been prosecuted under three charges by the Malaysian government, spent time in jail, and become the single most universally-despised person in Singapore and Malaysia. This book examines the upbringing, mindset, thoughts, and experiences of one of the most troubled youth that has raised the ire of the governments and media on both sides of the causeway, a world-class university, followers of a major religion, and countless members of the public.
Not a bad read, a rather opinionated memoir about the ultimate Malaysian attention seeker. Has some fundamentally incorrect assumptions, and some overly flowery language (seems to be a fan of using latin legal phrases fairly regularly).
A little pretentious, a little unfounded, but generally fairly entertaining. Worth a read if you've had any knowledge of the whole Alvivi saga
