Smoke and mirrors are meant to confuse. On the other hand, journalists specialize in clearing smoke and smashing shiny objects.
Eviscerated bodies are found along both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. Military security is stepped up on both sides of the border. Journalists are given free rein to explore the devastation. As more and more bodies are found, people begin to panic.
Meanwhile in The Liberia Treatment and Research Camp of West Africa, Emma Johnson and Chibueze Koroma continue to receive experimental doses of Mutation Z. They also begin remembering horrific things they’ve done. As journalist Hunter Morgan’s investigation leads him to that same camp, his own little girl falls sick with fever.

Mutation Z: The Ebola Zombies is free and I received Book II in return for an honest review.
SPOILER ALERT
Emma is now part of the experiment to creat a zombie army. It wasn’t bad enough for her in Book I, now she has traveled to the furthest reaches of HELL and knows it.
In NYC, journalist Hunter Morgan smells a rat when Chen-Zamora Pharmaceuticals gets an exclusive government contract to develop the Ebola vaccine. I mean, wouldn’t they want competition? Why an exclusive contract? Corruption? Conspiracy? Greed? And why was he given such easy access to a crime scene?
The scene with Hunter and his daughter is so sweet. Marilyn Peake has an ability to make her characters come to life, human and zombie alike.
Hunter gets more involved and could be making the biggest mistake of his life or becoming the savior of the planet.
Imagine being aware of turning into a zombie, aware of your shambling walk, bumping and jostling each other, your skin falling off in sheets, and the worst of all…
Can a shred of humanity remain?
Mutation Z is gross, horrific, outrageous, infuriating, corrupting…heads are cracked open, entrails pulled from shredded abdomens, body after body, young and old alike.
I am so into Mutation Z, I am wringing my hands with an evil grin on my face as Mailyn Peake tells me Mutation Z: Protecting Your Own, Book III, has just come out and I can have a copy for review. YAY!!!!
I don't usually like series, but this one gets to you. You can actually believe that the things in this book could happen. Corrupt politics can do awful things.
When mutilated bodies start turning up on both sides of the US-Mexican border, journalist Hunter Morgan starts looking into what could turn out to be the most important—and dangerous—story of his career. In the meantime, health volunteer Emma Johnson and her friend Dr. Chibueze Koroma are still being held in the Ebola camp in Liberia where they’re experimented on with the compound, Mutation Z. From Texas to Liberia, Morgan chases a story, revealing that the government is in league with a pharmaceutical company to produce an army of zombies, and it is willing to kill to keep the program secret. Worse, as the mutation gets out of government control, it sparks a reaction from fringe elements in American society that further add to the chaos. Mutation Z: Closing the Borders by Marilyn Peake picks up where the first book left off, and the suspense is ratcheted up several notches as new characters and plot lines are introduced. Wild, conspiracy theory related, unbelievable; all these descriptions can be applied to this book—this entire series. But, it’s presented in such a way that a reader doesn’t really have to suspend disbelief—it’s only necessary to take the current headlines or those of the recent past and ask, could there be more to this than meets the eye—and then realize that, yes there could. Quick reads, competently written. If you’re into zombie thrillers, give them a look-see.
If you read the first book, you probably thought it was horrific. Wait until you read this second one.
The author drops you right into the story. Even after mutilated bodies are found on the borders of Mexico and the US and they begin closing it down, journalists are allowed to investigate the scenes. What they discover are horrors beyond their worst imagination.
Flash to West Africa and Emma. She’s still at the camp, still unable to leave, and not sure if she should. As she digs deeper into the conspiracy, she’s crushed by what she’s done, what she might become.
Hope arrives in one Hunter Morgan, a journalist chasing a story. When his young daughter becomes ill, he’ll do anything to get to the bottom of it.
Imagine knowing you’re turning into a zombie. Knowing what you’ve done. I can’t think of anything more horrifying. Be warned. The author gives you graphic details. Lots of gore. Maybe I’m morbid, but that’s what I wanted, and that’s what I got. Being a huge fan of The Walking Dead, I can handle it.
More conspiracy and corruption abound. I wonder how bad it can get. A zombie army?
This second book is as intense as the first one. And the addition of new characters and the spread of the disease build the suspense to a fever pitch.
I’m so glad I already have the next four books so I don’t have to wait to continue.
MUTATION Z BOOK ONE impressed me with its vivid reality. Set in a West Africa treatment center in the jungle, staffed specifically (and allegedly) to treat Ebola symptoms and strive to mitigate the suffering. Also impressive were the author's use of the necessary nitty-gritty details and the personalization of the danger through a young American medical worker. When an educated First World professional like Emma is injected with the disease, and temporarily becomes something irrational and antagonistic, you know that you're reading very deep, very possible, near-future possibilities.
BOOK TWO: CLOSING THE BORDERS expands the medical research of the Mutation Z program, alluding to its political backers and pharmaceutical company hand-in-hand with certain unscrupulous politicians AND the military, for whom the potential uses of Mutation Z are endless and all are optimal.
Another great book!! Can't wait to see what is next!!
In this book not only does Emma's story continue but we get to see through a journalist name Hunter's eyes as well. After chasing down leads to a story in McAllen, Texas he gets a tip about a research facility in Liberia, Africa. He contacts his boss who is able to set him up undercover as a volunteer in the kitchen at this facility, where he sneaks around looking for information. When one day he is serving food the the patients he meets Emma. The two hatch a plan to bust Emma and he friend out and get the story to the people.
A follow-up novel from her first book, Mutation Z: The Ebola Zombies, this book continues the story about a nurse that became infected by a very dubious strain of Ebola, named Emma and adds a new main character, a reporter investigating rumours regarding weird happenings at the U.S/Mexio border. I like Marilyn Peake's writing style and how she breathes life in every character. Like her previous book, this one is a must-read and I urge all to immerse themselves into her well-written series.
A lot more gore and thrills than the first book - which isn't difficult, seeing as the first book felt more of a prologue. Still narratively somewhat slight and the ending felt a bit rushed, but an easy and enjoyable read.
I only read this because it was part of an anthology. It was more difficult to get through than the first, and if you saw my previous review, it was more of the same and it was not enjoyable.
This is the second book in the Zombie series Mutation Z. I dont see it as books but more as stand alone Novellas, or like episodes of a TV show. At first, I thought I would mind that but I dont.
So the second book, in a lot of ways it is better than the first book. we get to see two sides of the story, Emmas, as we follow in book one, and Hunter Morgan who is a journalist, who gets a hunch about something not being quite right with the Ebola vaccine. The story is now very different and in a lot of way really great. We get to see it from another set of eye and to see how a journalist tackling to find answers.
the first half is really awesome and very interesting. It goes deep into the story and we get to see the Zombie Emma side and then Hunter trying to dig up information about what has happen by the US-Mexian border.
What I dont like is that the second half is way to fast. I with there where more story and a deeper story in the end of it but I still enjoyed the book a lot.
Also I was thinking about the title. "Closing the borders". There is a lot of borders but non of them are really closed when this book is finished. I thought , at least, the US-Mexican border would be closed but no. So I am a little confused over the title. It made sense in the begging but not in the end. I must say that the last part, specially the last few "chapters" are rushed. There is no time for anything more than that quickly summarise the story to the point where we are back in USA. There is so much that could have been done but isnt. and I have so many questions... Bought the third part and hope it will be as great as the first two and maybe even better.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I chose 4 stars because I hoped after reading book one that this one would give more and not end so abruptly there are ways you can end a story that the reader can feel satisfied even when it leaves you wondering what next or will they figure it out!?!?!? Though it was a good storyline and kept me very interested I'm not as excited to read the next because the end is so disappointingly.
