Verder was Vanilla weer onuitstaanbaar. Ook mooi trouwens, ik zie ze nooit schoenen dragen, maar in deze droegen ze opeens schoenen.
My SLJ review: After discovering a Viking ship off the coast of Whale Island, The Thea Sisters, a group of five college girls (mice), devise a plan to raise money for its recovery. The sisters find an empty perfume bottle on the ship, believed to have belonged to Princess Asa and they recreate the perfume to sell at the Midwinter Fair. Things go awry when villainous Vissia de Vissen forms a plot to steal the secret perfume formula. This third title in the series offers a challenging vocabulary and a bit of historical accuracy, with its brief discussion of Harald, the last great Viking king, and comments on Viking trade with Persia. Multiple references to other "Thea Stilton" titles (Papercutz) ensure its success as a marketing tool; however, the story goes amiss with its hokey content and stereotypical characters. The "Geronimo Stilton" chapter books (Scholastic) offer a better reading experience with a large font and more age-appropriate dialogue. Still, fans will clamor for this graphic novel adventure. Grades 3-5
Strong, confident young women bringing with good intentions, creativity, and ambition.
It is for younger readers, and I feel that it is a great introduction to comics. I find that comics are usually an easier way to get kids into reading since it still includes a lot of pictures [like picture books tend to have] but the stories are also a little more advanced.
I recommend the Thea Sisters as a set of confident young role models for girls that like action adventure but still want to look cute while kicking butt.
I got this book for my little sister and decided to read it myself. The story is quite predictable, just like the characters, but I do like the ending. The colors were great and it was a nice quick read.
Aw yeahhh, another banger. The plot about the viking ship wasn't as contrived as I thought it'd be, since the story put in the work to explain how such an artifact could've gone undiscovered for centuries. There were a few running conflicts throughout the story: the lack of funds to recover the ship, Vanilla's one-sided competition with the Thea Sisters, concocting the perfume recipe, etc.
In short, there were a lot of plot points to juggle, and the author did a great job of giving everyone their due diligence, even the de Vissen siblings. (Vic's developing arc to join the good side is not going unnoticed.) Although the secondary villains were the dumb, bumbling types, they presented a good enough addition to the main conflicts to add urgency to the story and make it a little more robust. As always, the Thea Sisters are generally just very lucky characters, but they did have to put their brains together and work hard to make things happen, which is nice to see. Colette's and Pamela's personalities always clashing is also just really entertaining to me.
Just like the last books, the art in this was excellent, and even a little bit better! The wintery, festive settings were well-illustrated and really made me feel like I was there joining the festivities on Whale Island, just like it did when I was younger. All the sisters' outfits in this book were SO cute and actually fashionable! The colors were bright, the paneling was good, and the expressions were never boring. Everyone was brimming with personality and character. Really, really good stuff.
Anyways, special shout out to Craig, a member of the Gecko club. When he's not being competitive (or just in the same room as Vic), he's actually very sweet and really passionate about what he does. Another shout out to Dina's sister, Chamomile, for being the winner of the IDGAF wars.
I loved this book I think the best part that I liked was when they found the Viking ship and found the treasure because I am always eager what the treasure is
