Christian Villiers, the Marquess of St. Cyr, despises the role he's been cast into as fortune hunter but requires the funds to keep his marquisate solvent. Yet, the sins of his past cloud his future, preventing him from seeing beyond his fateful actions at the Battle of Toulouse. For he knows inevitably it will catch up with him, and everyone will remember his actions on the battlefield that cost so many so much—particularly his best friend.
In want of a husband…
Lady Prudence Tidemore's life is plagued by familial scandals, which makes her own marital prospects rather grim. Surely there is one gentleman of the ton who can look past her family and see just her and all she has to offer?
When Prudence runs into Christian on a London street, the charming, roguish gentleman immediately captures her attention. But then a chance meeting becomes a waltz, and now...
A Perfect Match…
All she must do is convince Christian to forget the cold requirements he has for his future marchioness. But the demons in his past prevent him from turning himself over to love. One thing is certain--Prudence wants the marquess and is determined to have him in her life, now and forever. It's just a matter of convincing Christian he wants the same.
USA TODAY Bestselling author CHRISTI CALDWELL blames Judith McNaught's "Whitney, My Love!" for luring her into the world of historical romance. While sitting in her graduate school apartment at the University of Connecticut, Christi decided to set aside her notes and pick up her laptop to try her hand at romance. She believes the most perfect heroes and heroines have imperfections, and she rather enjoys torturing them before crafting them a well deserved happily ever after!
Christi makes her home in Charlotte, North Carolina where she spends her time writing her own enchanting historical romances, and baking surprisingly good cakes (almost 2 years in lockdown will do that) with her courageous son and twin daughters, each who with their daily antics provides limitless source material.
This book confuses me. I have multiple feelings, but much like Prudence and her ability to prattle on aimlessly - I feel like I'd prattle on about my confusing thoughts about this book.
So to conclude my contradictory thoughts, I have realized that I LOVE both the characters but mostly despise the plot and the writing style. Which is a strange thing, because I usually love Caldwell's writing style and plot. In this case, it wasn't a hit for me. However, all author's have a few duds. While this book isn't for me, I've loved so many books by this author it won't turn me away from reading her books in the future.
This line, this internal dialogue of Prudence speaks to me:
"There, in the middle of the crowded ballroom, a small sliver of her heart slipped free and landed at his feet, forever his."
Essentially, what I like about this book is that the romance is more of the buildup of their emotional connect, which then led to the sexual tension as well. Usually we have physical want first, and then the emotional connect. I liked that. Also, in this book Prudence was the one who quite overtly went after Christian. But I loved it, because she did not do it from a sense of wanting a title, or wanting money or safety or anything of the sort. But purely because she very much felt for him and wanted him. I liked that, but I liked that it had been given enough backing with their interactions before hand so it didn't feel weird.
Christian would have been a fabulous hero if it wasn't for the dramatic plot lines. However still I did love him, and his man-pain while theatric at some points felt realistic to me. Overall I loved the couple, but wish the plot and the dramatics was different.
3 stars Couldn't get through the first book in this series; the second one was better, but still not a hit (clearly, given what I rated it). It's unfortunate, because I really liked Prudence. I loved how refreshing and honest she was. Apparently she was a bitch in some previous books, featuring her brother's romance and her sister's, but those are from another series, not this one. Anyway, that's when she was younger, and we don't see any of that here.
Here, rather, she's a sweet, sentimental, and romantic young woman who is eager for her HEA. I liked her interactions with Christian and the chemistry between them, but unfortunately I just didn't believe the strength of it all. It would have been great ... just needed a HUGE middle section inserted to show actual relationship development and that they spent more than a handful of hours with one another.
That was by far the weakest point and something I couldn't get past, unfortunately. (As well as the insta-love/insta-lust/insta-connection factor).
nice. the pacing was a bit slow inbetween and the story and the characters had their weaknesses but nevertheless a nice and sweet read, which I really enjoyed
"No Scandals. No elopements or rushed marriages. You are to be everything and all things proper..."
CAPTIVATED BY A LADY'S CHARM by Christi Caldwell, is a book I set aside everything I was doing and every ARC I was reading to give my full attention, and I am so very glad that I did.
Being a member of the scandalous Tidemore family is a very difficult task indeed when it comes to dealing with the ton. As a family, they are as close a family can be with each loving the other, warts and all. Unfortunately the multiple scandals hang over the heads of the three unwed sisters and Prudence's coming out is destined to be a difficult one with the unscrupulous misses whispering idle chatter within hearing distance. However, Prudence will not be cowed, for ever since she met a certain gentleman outside a London shop, her aspirations have improved.
War hero and new Marquess of St. Cyr, Christian Villiers is in quite a quandary. His estate is three months from ruin and against his better judgement, the only way out of the predicament is to marry a wealthy lady. His requirements are a little off for a man in the market for a wife, for Christian wants no innocent miss with stars in her eyes for the publicly acclaimed hero, he wants a loveless marriage with the sole purpose of saving his mother, sister and a menagerie of household servants who mean more to him that he lets on. The only problem is, a fascinating lady named Prudence who nowhere fits the mold of the prim and proper ladies of the ton, has captured his attention and thoughts of her threaten to throw him off course.
It takes a waltz for Prudence to realize what she wants, and oh a lady who knows what or whom she wants can be a dangerous creature. With the knowledge her brother, Sin and their mother believe St. Cyr to be a fortune hunting rogue, Prudence uses her common sense to convince herself and those around her that the marquess is what she wants.
Haunted by the memories from his past, Christian cannot seem to let the light in when it comes to Prudence. She deserves more than the rogue, who even though is hailed as a hero, thinks he is no more than a coward. Pluck and determination along with a large dose of optimism has Prudence seeking out what she wants. The only thing is, she has to convince Christian that he wants her as well. With the weight of what seems like the world on his shoulders, it takes a lot of persuasion for the marquess to see what's in front of him.
Just when I thought it couldn't get any better than the first book in the Lords of Honor series, SEDUCED BY A LADY'S HEART, gifted author, Christi Caldwell has blown me away with CAPTIVATED BY A LADY'S CHARM. There are no words to express how much I enjoyed this book with it's engrossing characters and brilliant storyline. Prudence was not one of my favorite characters in the first book, she was a brat. My how she has matured and become such an enthralling woman. Christan's will to steer clear of this intriguing lady, is in vain because Prudence Tidemore has more resolve in one pinkie, than the whole of London's ton. Christi Caldwell's voice is a powerful one and her tales are meaningful as well as entertaining. I am ashamed to say I only discovered this oh-so-talented writer earlier this Summer, but made quick work of binge reading her library of wonderful stories. Maybe it's just me, that I have connected to Ms. Caldwell's writing so powerfully that this lady can do no wrong, but I don't think that is the case. Christi Caldwell has earned her way to the top of my list of favorite authors and there she will remain. Grab CAPTIVATED BY A LADY'S CHARM and see for yourself.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was unpredictable with twists and turns that I didn't expect. I have enjoyed all of Caldwell's books. She puts so much depth into her characters. Looking forward to the next in this series.
DELIGHTFUL! I love when younger sisters crop up in these book and devil their older siblings and/or sneak around at balls and see things they maybe shouldn't.
CAPTIATED BY A LADY’S CHARM brings us a hero that is not your normal hero. Christian Villiers, Marquess of St. Cyr was not supposed to inherit, he was the typical aristocratic son; floating through life with no real purpose, no direction as a younger son, and thinking everything is a folly and lark. He and his friends go off to fight Napoleon and there is a tragedy, one that Christian was not prepared to comprehend or know how to live with. He carries guilt and believes himself to be unworthy of love, attention or living period. While I wanted to shake him many times and occasionally applying a boot to his behind, he was sweet, considerate and discovered with Prudence’s help his strengths and worth.
Lady Prudence Tidemore is starting her first season with a target on her back for gossips. She is ruined but not by her own actions, yet holds her head high and refuses to let the mean gossips win. She is a strong, quirky young woman, with a sense of humor and strong familial love. She dreams of finding her “one” even knowing that she has an uphill battle. My favorite quote of Pru’s, “I do not delude myself or others into believing I am one thing, or striving to prove I am something different than what I am.”
They meet and she has decided Christian is her “one” and Christian does his level best to prove her wrong. They are fabulous together. With the humor and fast paced dialogue I have come to expect from Ms Caldwell’s characters we are taken on the journey that sees them through finding their HEA. There are misunderstandings, stolen moments of passion, a near trampling, stubborn older brother visits, a tree attack, and a vengeful moment designed to tear them apart, ugly gossips that I would love to see finally get their comeuppance, and a wonderful family of fabulous young women- the Tidemore’s. With Pru’s help Christian learns self-forgiveness, gains a sense of self he had never thought possible.
I have been a fan of Ms Caldwell and this story did not disappoint me. Her hero was not the normal Alpha, but in the end his true colors had me cheering for him. Pru had me in her corner from the first page. I loved the spunk she has even in the face of the narrow minded society in which she lives. Well done. I usually find myself hoping that all the friends of the hero and heroine get HEA, this time I wish for Maxwell to succeed, but the other friend is just too dark and damaged for me to hope! I do look forward to more with Prudence’s sisters, they are brilliant!
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Another fantastic story by Christi Caldwell. She has once wrote a story that will captivate the reader, drawing them in and making them feel every thing her characters are going through. The ability to write about broken men and woman and not make them seem self pitying and silly is utterly amazing. From the very first sentence to the very last word, you will be entralled and enchanted. You wont want to put the book down and when its over it will leave you fulfilled with the main characters but needing more from the secondary characters.
Christian Villiers, Marquess St Cyr, is guilt ridden, broken and utterly broke. With no money to his name, he must find and marry an heiress within 3 months time.
Prudence Tidmore aka Pru, is about to embark on her first season with multiple scandals hanging over her head. She is dreading her debut because of the scandalous nature of how her brother and oldest sister married and because she looks horrid in white.
A chance meeting outside a shop with the Marquess of St Cyr, suddenly changes Pru's mind about the possibilities of the season.
Christian is determined to find a wife will meet his criteria of being an heiress but who will also not expect any type of feelings from him because he doesn't believe he is capable of having them. He thinks he is a coward and undeserving of any type of happiness.
Will Prudence be able to convince Christian that he deserves so much more than what he has condemned himself to or will he settle for less than he deserves? You'll have to delve into this story to find out for your self. Trust me, you won't regret it.
"No scandals. No elopments or rushed marriages. You are to be everything and all things proper"...is the mantra drilled into Prudence Tidemore and her sister's, after scandals caused by her older sister and brother, by their proper Mama. But Prudence has never been a proper, genteel, English lady. She was a trouble making child and teen. She loves to draw, but isn't any good. Loves to dance, but doesn't do that well either. Not that anyone partners with her anyway, with her families scandals. Enter, Lord St. Cyr, Christian Villiers., who literally saves her from being dowsed with dirty water in front of a bookstore. And waltzes with her at a ball. He is immediately captivated by her. And she him. Problem is, he needs to find a wife with a fat dowry, which Prudence has., to save his family from financial ruin. But with his guilt from the past, he doesn't feel worthy enough, to wed an innocent young woman like Prudence. A woman he's falling in love with. He feels he'd be better off with an experienced woman, who is only after his title....Problem is? He is captivated by Prudence's charm. I adored both Christian and Prudence. He was the perfect match for our Prudence Tidemore. I can't wait for the next book.
It's not often I read a book where the heroine does the pursuing. I had a hard time believing the hero was a former rake/rogue since he has a low self-worth after what happened to him in the war and especially after he was betrayed by a woman. One would think he would stay away from women like her (Lynette, not the heroine).
I've read/listened to many of Christi Caldwell's books and I noticed she uses this phrase in almost all of her books when there's a kiss scene: "He slanted his mouth over hers again and again."
I adore Poppy (the heroine's youngest sister) and I can't wait for her to get her own book. I hope my expectations don't get crushed. I wonder if she'll end up with Lord Maxwell (one of Christian's best friend). Probably not since he's a bit older than her.
DNF 70%. I'm normally a fan of this author, but this book did not work for me. Very naive girl did all the chasing and in a rather overt fashion, which would be quite scandalous on its own, but even more so given that her family is already embroiled in scandal and she and her sister have poor marital prospects as it was. The hero was a bit repetitive in his agonising over past events and present choices and why not marry the chit, since he needed a rich wife anyway?
An heiress from a scandal-ridden family decides she wants to marry a particular Marquess based off of like two dances and a brief conversation, practically stalks him to get his attention, and then just outright asks him to marry her. Of course he tries to refuse because she's too good for his unworthy self etc etc. This was about as cookie cutter as regency romances get and there was a little too much "not like other girls" flavor sprinkled on Pru.
I had a hard time getting thru this one. Just too much angst over each of their insecurities and the author just belabored them one time too many for me.
This is a wonderful story about the guilt and horrors of war that men carry with them after they return home. These soldiers now fight a different battle; one which some never win. Christian Villiers is one of these men. He’s covered the scars he bears by roguish living. Thrust into the position of Marquis, he’s inherited with the title an insurmountable debt. He needs to marry for money: For now he’s responsible for his mother, sister, and his unusual staff made up of former soldiers. Prudence is a romantic. Her family has suffered two scandals that hang over her and her younger sisters’ heads. That makes her a wallflower because no one in the ton of Regency England wants to be attached to a scandal. A chance meeting between the two sets in motion a whirlwind of events and emotions. No matter what, they can and will not be together. I totally enjoyed this book. At first I feared it would be a mirror of the first book in the series, but it was much more. I was engaged with the characters as they wrestled with their emotions and their situations. It’s a great storyline, made better by the fact that the author spent time with former military men who suffered the same guilt and shame. Of course I recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading stories of redemption and the power of love. The Audible version is narrated by Tim Campbell. Although he’s not my favorite, I think he did a good job with this book. He brought Christian to life in a deeply satisfying way.
SPOILER ALERT The thing is I just dont like both of the hero or the heroine. Sorry to say but the heroine is too gullible for her own good. How come she ask the friend whose face was ruined by her husband to visit him when they dont talk to each other for so long and ask that friend to forgive her husband so easily ??
If she want them to talk to each other, she should persuade her husband to ask the friend forgiveness.
And even after knowing how big her husband mistake for The country, she still has the nerve to mock the friend ??
Well I actually dont know how her husband still get called as a hero without getting any punishment. Yeah the friend was wrong and he made a big mistake as well but cant she see that the friend was also in pain ?
She can has compassion for her husband but she couldnt give those to other as well ? How about other people son lives ? The ones that died because of her husband ?
Sorry i dont have any pity for the hero as well. Yeah he was in pain but he should tell the goverment about his mistake and taken whatever punishment they gave him and he should never be silent when someone call him as a hero. He is a coward to the end.
Captivated by a Ladies Charm, book 2 of Christi Caldwell’s Lords of Honor series, is absolutely charming! Hang on to your hat for this emotionally charged ride! Typical of Christi Caldwell, her characters Lady Prudence Tidemore and Tristan Villiers, Marquess of St. Cyr, are both unique characters trying to escape the world in which they are forced to live. Prudence, always having to be perfect, so that her family is not in another scandal, sneaks out of the modiste’s for a moment alone, only to be saved from a slip bucket by Tristan, a reluctant hero, who only sees himself as a coward and traitor following poor decisions made by a youthful boy who went to fight a war against Napoleon. From that moment on they are drawn to each other, and Prudence sees that together they compliment and help each other, but Tristan doesn’t believe himself worthy. This story is full of surprises, and will not disappoint. Oh, and the chemistry between these two is like a moth to a flame! Don’t get to close or you might catch fire! And keep the tissues handy too! It’s a roller coaster ride that runs the emotional gamut, but thrilling to the very end!
I loved this story! It's her first season. Prudence must live with the whispers and gossips due to the scandals to her family by her older brother and sister. Her mother is adamant that their will be no more scandals in the family. While Prudence is wholly innocent of these scandals, she is the one made to suffer. No respectable gentleman will seek her hand. None of the ladies will be her friend. She is forced to sit out every dance and listen to the gossipmongers talk about her.
Christian must marry a wealthy heiress, and soon. He puts together requirements for what he requires in choosing his wife, but he is too enamored with the girl he met by chance only months ago. With a little nudge from his friend, he asks to be properly introduced to Prudence and then requests she dance the remainder of the Waltz with him. One dance that will change both their lives.
CONTENT Violence - Moderate Language - Mild Romance - Mature
I loved it - another emotional & wonderful read by Christi Caldwell. The hero, Christian Villiers, the Marquess of St. Cyr, is an ex-soldier who still suffers the dark effects of the war & doesn't believe he deserves to be happy. Due to a death, he is now a Marquess with life ruining debts & has a Mother & 15yr .old sister to look after. He needs to find a rich wife to pay off the debts owed against his title. Then Prudence Tidemore, who is a wallflower with no prospects of marriage after two scandals within her family, shunned by the London ton, she hates the ballroom scenes ,that is until she meets Christian again. I highly recommend you reading the book to find out what the journey is like to their HEA! I needed tissues, chocolate & wine to get through some of the emotional parts of the book!
I’m reading my way through the stories of Jonathan Tidemore and his 4 sisters. The first stories were rereads but this one is new to me.
This story falls squarely in the category of “why I read this author.” While reading a Regency romance you learn a great deal about the stresses and lives of those who come home from war. Nightmares, anxiety attacks, lack of jobs, family challenges, monetary issues. The Tidemore sisters are particularly empathetic women and possess the capacity to love imperfect men, helping them see their better selves.
Book quote: “she’d held on to the dream of… well, more—marriage to a man who did not want her to conform to the mold expected of societal ladies, and who loved her for who she was, dreaded dancing and rotten sketches, and all.”
Christi has done it again! A wonderful romance that brings smiles and tears to the reader's eyes ( so engrossing that you can't put it down) The depth she develops in her characters causes the reader to really care and feel for their pain and struggles. She explores the horrors of war, and the undeserved pain brought on by another's gossip and untruths. This book is captivating and the goodness of Prudence and brokenness of Christian will have you routing for their love to win out on the end
Rating: 3.5 Ever since reading Sin's story in "Always a Rogue, Forever Her Love" and being introduced to the Tidemore girls, I wanted to know more about the lot. This story started with a good premise, but just didn't hold the same punch. There was too much of insta love and unnecessary angst.
Another horrible book. I don’t know what happened to this author during this particular series but they are really bad. In this one the hero is anything but a hero. He is a loser with a big L on his forehead. Although the author attempts to redeem him, I found him unredeemable.
I love reading stories of the Tidemore family. This is a great story. It’s like watching and reading the stories of peoples lives. How they lean on each other, which is that we should all be.
